I just had a thought, maybe everyone but me had already worked this out.....

I always have huge problems with cold tyres at the start of FIA races. I've been paying attention to the feel of the tyres at the start in practice lobbies, and I just don't see the same problem. So I was thinking to myself "WHY would FIA races be different for this?!". Then I realised - we're sat stationary on the grid for ages before starting, so our tyres must be getting stone cold during that time. So there is, unfortunately, no way to practice this at the start of a race, but I guess we could park the car at the side of the track for a couple of minutes during the practice stage of an online lobby, then start a lap, and that should give similar feel to the start of an FIA race. It should at least be helpful to know in advance that the cold tyres are going to be much worse at the start than in practice lobbies.

I thought the grip levels are similar when you come out of the pits and start of the race, whether in lobby or FIA qualy/race/after pitstop. What's different with the start of the race is you're on full tank, cold tyres, probably in someone's slipstream, you're trying to make up places in T1 and everyone tries to do the same, which amplifies the bottleneck effect and feeling of less grip. Unless you're on pole it's probably best to take it at 90% for the first half lap. Trust me, you're not losing too much time at this stage of the race and you will also save some tyres for the end of the stint.

If it really bothers you though, you can turn the wheels left/right/left/right while on the grid and also set brake balance max front for T1 so it warms up quicker. But personally to me the extra wear on the tyres is not worth it.

I've had the same thought to be honest. As you can burn fuel while you watch the grid walk it stands to reason that the car is 'live' and that the tyres are getting cold. All the reasons @LeGeNd-1 listed are also true making a perfect storm for a difficult start to the race.

Those things are all the same in practice lobbies, though, but the grip just feels normal in those, it's only in the FIA races themselves where it's like driving on ice for the first ~3 corners.

I would expect them to put out a notice if they did change it.
I'd just expect them to disable front/rear selection and you pick a compound.

Well, done my race, went for the Porsche, why are people so impatient?! Started 10th, finished 10th after dropping to 15th initially thanks to an over zealous Irishman who while carrying a 5s penalty decided to hit me up the back into Juncao, he just braked way too late. It didn't push me off but cost me a second, thus I lost the slipstream off @VulcanSpirit and I got swallowed up by said Irishman and another Merc down the straight. If you don't get the drive out of that corner in the Porsche you're a sitting duck for practically anything.

Ultimately had some decent racing once the field had settled. Pitted on L8 for mediums (maybe should have pitted one lap earlier) and might have got a higher finish had I made a move stick around the outside of Vulcan in the GTR as he exited the pits, it was close! But not quite close enough. After following Vulcan closely for a couple of laps my advantage in the middle sector started to disappear, I lost the tow and gradually fell back. Ideally I needed another lap before he and the Irishman pitted for me to jump them and then you never know.

Clean stuff Vulcan!!

Will probably stick with my points and watch a film with the missus! Good racing everyone 👍

Happy enough with my manufacturer result. Got a great slipstream in qualifying to get 2nd on the grid. In the race, I made a few slight errors and dropped down the field a little. Having started on softs, I gambled on an early switch to hards at the end of lap 8, hoping that I'd actually be faster on the fresh hards than those ahead of me were on their old softs, and achieve the undercut. It did work out, I just scraped ahead of the people who had been ahead of me after they pitted, and delayed them a little before they managed to pass me on softer tyres. I went back onto softs at the end of lap 17, hoping to again gain some more ground on those ahead, and felt it had gone quite well, but was surprised when someone came out ahead of me after their stop. I also had a surprisingly fast car coming up behind, who hadn't been near me on the track before that point. Having reviewed the replay, I saw that he had opened enough of a lead while doing his middle stint on softs to my hards, and I didn't manage to quite close the gap when the roles were reversed for the final stint. Beaten fair and square, there, I concluded. And the car that was coming up fast behind, they started on an MH mix, but it came down to him being behind me at the start of the final stint, with both of us on softs, and he was simply faster than me, so again, beaten fair and square there. The winner was in a class of his own, qualifying on pole and simply driving away from everyone. There was one person who interfered quite a lot among the 2nd to 4th finishers while not using the hard tyres and finishing well down the field as a result, which was a bit annoying. So, 4th in the end, 170 points, and I felt all 3 who beat me were simply faster than me, the best drivers won.

Qualified 10th. Started well, moved up to 6th after a few laps and was running comfortably until I made a silly mistake at the last couple of corners of lap 9 and spun off, smashed the wall and rejoined in 14th with damage so was a good time to pit. Spent rest of the race slowly picking my way back through the field to finish 8th. Not too disappointed but would probably have finished top 5 if I hadn’t crashed!

A sincere apology to anyone in the Manufacturer race I was just in. I was all over the place.
Since you're here @breeminator, I ended up with the fastest lap in my race with a 52.1. There were more points on offer in my race so I assume it was a higher rated lobby than yours, yet you had three people beat that. I was surprised when I saw your lap times.

I find it can be a bit random. I was right behind people a lot of the time in the race, so never got a fast lap in, my qualifying lap was my first flying lap with full fuel and was 51.9. The winner of my race looks like a DR sandbagger, having been at 60k in the past. This race is the first one I can remember for a long time where I've been genuinely beaten for pace rather than a slower driver punting me out of the way then proceeding to drive painfully slowly in front of me while slightly less painfully slow drivers disappear off into the distance ahead.

Edit: LOL, I've just watched Kie's race, and the winner's fastest lap in my 40k lobby was faster than fastest lap in top split.

Thought I’d give the Z4 a go this season. Managed to put it 12 on the grid. Went for S/S/H strategy. Was up into 5th after lap 4 thanks to a few people in front having accidents and picking up penalties. Stayed there the majority of the race and moved up a place to 4th thanks to someone getting a 20 second tire penalty :)

This top split was very very competitive. Driving against at least 10 amazing drivers, if not more. A very memorable Nations race for sure, hope you enjoy it too!

My first race with my new team UDI Sport Brasil was absolutely amazing. My qualifying was compromized by a car behind on my slipstream that hit me on turn one but still managed a decent starting position. Enjoy the race, I did!

For Manufacturers half of the job was getting a god slipstream in qualy because overtaking here was hard on this short track. Did not get a good one but the race was ok.

Another frustrating Manu in CSA with the Subaru. Last slot (1:40 AM local) with a huge spread in DR. Qualified 13th, a couple tenths from being well in the top ten.

Lap one, the right-hander that you have to brake for, I was smashed in the rear end by a Mercedes into the wall. Engine damage, front and rear aero damage, and two broken wheels. Caught up to the guy twice in the race and was pushed off by him. Race ruined.

I was praising the clean racing a couple weeks ago. Now I'm just drinkin' beer.

Actually managed a decent, solid night in both FIA races.

Nations:

Started 12th after an idiotic mistake in Qualifying. Started on Hards and pitted on Lap 12 for Mediums and a Splash of Fuel. Only real highlight was some blockhead who decided to try and run me off the road after I got a better run out of the final corner on far fresher tires and take it to the inside (ironically, wrecked himself and I didn't get a penalty). Managed to bring it home 14th, two positions worse then what the game expected me to finish but its something before the Chaos that is Tokyo (Oh god..)

Manufacturers:

Started dead last. Lap 1 was already off to a wild start with one guy spinning around into the wall after getting on the power (rip), made some contact with the Guardrail but kept it together. Then two guys got together and it was Days of Thunder with smoke everywhere and me going by both cars. Originally my strategy was to go all the way on Hards to Lap 22 (Something I practiced and managed to make work) and then go onto softs but after finding out Mediums could be used as well prior to the start, My strat was altered to this: Pitting on Lap 14 for Mediums, then on lap 22 for Softs. Unlike the last race where I drove to the numbers and still managed to have crap luck, this time it worked out way better as was catching cars and passing some going into the pit. Another 14th (That was almost a 13th after a drag race with a BMW) but for once, a Manufacturers race that wasn't awful.

Did my first FIA races at A+ rank last night, still feeling the satisfaction of last Wednesday's triumph:

Nations Cup (17:00)

First up was the 17:00 Nations, which I took part in alongside @SmokeyMR2 and @Ashthebash. Chose the GT-R - one of two in the lobby - on account of its blistering straight-line speed, after encouraging early practice runs in this and the Porsche. Set two solid laps and a couple of purple first sectors, the fastest a 1:31.855. Had just enough time for a third lap, but went in too hot at the Senna S's and had to settle for 8th on the grid. Only five-and-a-half tenths off pole, which was jointly-shared between an RCZ and a Huracan!

Made a last-minute gamble to start on the Medium/Hard mix, which proved especially tricky with my lack of practice on this mix along with the torque and tail-happiness of the GT-R. Wasn't too concerned about losing places early on as my main aim was to keep it as smooth and gentle as possible through corners. For much of the opening stint, I succeeded in following an Italian AMG through as the two-stoppers - including the joint pole-sitting Lambo - pitted for the first time. A twitch coming out of Turn 13 on Lap 7 saw me go over the kerb and career into the barrier, killing most of my speed and allowing two AMGs - one of whom was Smokey - and an orange Porsche to battle with me for 7th. Had a little bit of contact with Smokey as I hugged the kerb at Turn 8, only to then survive a punt from the Porsche which sends me into a slide. Thankfully the GT-R's straight-line punch allowed me to get back into range for 7th until my stop for Mediums. Careful short-shifting ensured I had saved at least two extra laps' worth of fuel during this stint.

Coming back out onto Reta Oposta, I notice Ashthebash approaching in the Porsche and defend my position while trying to brake gently on my colder treads. Ash goes round the outside, but runs out onto the kerb as I try to leave him enough room, allowing me to surge back past on the inside through Descida do Lago. Thank you Ash for your compliments about my driving there - I was concerned that I was being too forceful in my defence, but I'm glad we both made it out fine. :) Ash continues to follow me as I gain rapidly on Smokey and the orange Porsche from earlier. I jump a Portuguese AMG on the two-stop and avoid the Porsche as he fishtails his way through Pinheirinho. Made a couple of attempts to pass Smokey - taking advantage of the GT-R's pace - but didn't want to battle too hard in case I made mistakes and potentially threw away a good finish. I was happy to settle for 9th until the Portuguese AMG cut the kink going into the final straight, handing himself a 0.5 second penalty within sight of the flag. With this, the Castrol GT-R bagged 8th place and 178 points. This has put me in really good stead for my Nations rankings so far - 110th in EMEA, 14th in the UK and 1st in my region by a fairly comfortable margin.

Manufacturers Series (21:00)

This Manufacturers season, I've decided to sign up for Citroen after an encouraging test lobby with @breeminator for the Red Bull Ring round (which I ultimately decided not to enter due to tiredness, hype from my Nations victory and the underlying need to preserve my A+ rank on Kudosprime in case anything went belly-up). Wasn't entirely sure how I would fare here with the mistakes I kept making in practice lobbies, but learning breeminator's approach to the first corner and putting in a couple of clean-ish sessions helped me considerably. A race time of 24:09.365 in my final test lobby looked promising, but knowing how savage the Sardegna C II layout can get, I wasn't hoping to get much out of this one.

Entered the 21:00 slot with a couple of familiar faces from Nations. Through an incident-filled qualifying session, I put in a few smooth, solid laps on Softs to take third on the grid; the fastest being a 51.963. Traffic and a worn left-rear put paid to any further improvements, but considering the issues I had in practice, I was more than happy with being two-tenths behind the Italian AMG and French orange Supra.

Starting this high up, it felt like a no-brainer to do the first stint on Softs and keep up with the two leaders. Turned out that the next best-placed AMG (orange and black) started on the Medium/Hard mix, which left me with a good traction advantage as I hounded the Italian AMG and Supra round. The Supra in particular seemed very aggressive, at one point turning into me as I committed to the inside of Turn 1 and punting the AMG wide on the very next lap. It seemed from my replay that he got caught out by the AMG braking suddenly on the entry into Turn 1, but either way, both cars run wide, make contact again, the AMG is sent to the grass and I sweep round the outside of the Supra going through the esses. With that, I take the lead, and the 4-second penalty the Supra picked up for this incident nullifies the pressure he initially sets on me. Managed the softs well, but a slide on Lap 5 hurt my left-rear considerably as I began pulling away from the AMG on MH. By Lap 9, I knew the first lot of Softs had lost their edge, and decided to pit for Hards in order to save my second set for the final push.

With the less grippy compounds in mind - plus the chronic wear that the left-rears were suffering - I was not too concerned about being reeled in by said AMG as he took advantage of the Softs. A consistent set of low-53 second laps enabled me to hold out until Lap 18, at which point I graciously let the AMG through on the run down the start-finish straight. After a whopping 11-lap stint, I followed the AMG into the pits at the end of Lap 20, taking on softs once more. From that point, it was a straight duel between ourselves, and it didn't take long for me to realise that I was rapidly gaining on him. A win was on the cards again as I pressured the AMG towards the closing stages; on Lap 26, I passed him for the lead down into Turn 1. On the final lap, the AMG fights back, gaining the slipstream before suddenly swerving to the right and forcing me to go left to leave him enough room to pass. Side-by-side we go through Turn 1, and a moment of understeer from the AMG causes us to make contact as I try to get a clean exit around the outside. Amazingly, I pull out in front and withstand further pressure until the AMG goes wide exiting the final corner. From there, it was a straight run to victory, 254 points and a fantastic Manufacturers debut for Citroen.

On the night, I had reasonably high hopes for this duo. But picking up a second FIA win in two weeks at this level? Get in there!

Bud that was me in the Merc and I did tap your rear end but it caught me out how early you braked for that corner, I was carrying a lot more speed through there than that and misjudged it completely. Totally my fault I am sorry, just it wasn't like your thinking I am a clean racer, I'm sure others on here that I've raced with would back me up on that. Also when I tapped you on my screen I barely grazed your back bumper but, dunno why (guessing GT physics) you got more of a hit then it felt. I was probably pushing a bit too hard because yes I had a 5 sec pen from lap 1 but watch the replay and you'll see why.

Once again I do apologise to you but I'm not an over zealous or impatient racer, usually quite the opposite, sorry if I messed your race, I hope we can have a good, clean battle on track at some point so I can show you I'm not the driver you think. :)

Just to second that @SmokeyMR2 isn't a dirty driver. I've raced him on a number of occasions and he's always clean. Accidents happen and we all make mistakes.

My Manufacturers race wasn't a good one. I've probably not spent enough time practicing and too much time chasing Hamiltons ghost around various tracks
Qualified 19th(!) and finished 13th purely by keeping out of trouble. That and making sure I used the hard tyre. Seriously, how are people still not getting that right? @Lost Sheltie was in my race and did better than I did, despite a pretty close encounter at the ridiculous pit exit corner!
The Hyundai experiment is going better than the Ferrari experiment but I don't love the cars. Thinking maybe Alfa Romeo or Jaguar next season (yes I'm already thinking about next season).

Awful idea to put Gr3 on such a tiny track, it suits more Gr4 or below. Silly combo from PD
Have to admit, I had reservations about that combo after doing the Maggiore Gr.3 race last Manufacturers season. The C II layout is comically short for this category and can be brutally unforgiving if you get it wrong, but I'm glad that @breeminator and I persevered in the end. Nailing the high-speed sections and trail-braking into the final corner felt satisfying in the Citroen.

Well, last night's Manufacturer's race went surprisingly well. I once again qualified at the back (18th) in my Corvette and started the race with M/H tires. In a strange turn of events, I opted to go for a 1-stop while most people appeared to try a 2-stop race (usually I'm the one doing an extra stop if the opportunity presents itself). In practice lobbies earlier I found that I wasn't losing enough time on older tires to justify a 2nd stop, and after qualifying at the back and not making that much ground up before the stops I decided I didn't really have anything to lose. Long story short, I crossed the line 11th and only a few seconds away from being lapped, but finished 10th because someone in front didn't use the hard tires.

Oh I forgot, I had another go in the last Manu race last night. A few laps in and an AMG ploughed into the back of me at turn 1 because he had slipstream and didn't brake early enough. Fair enough. 5 second penalty.

On the next lap when he's serving it I caught up to him right as his penalty expired. I panicked thinking he was going to unghost and went off track to the left of him and into the wall. Fantastic penalty line placement, as I predicted.

I liked Sardegna C when it was a Daily Race, and if I'd been consistent/lucky here I could have done really well in the GT-R. I think it's too much of a lottery to have as an FIA combo.
