So far I've done 2 races. I qualified 13th for both of them using the Cayman. 1st race I spun after hitting the inside curbs multiple times before ultimately ragequitting on lap 17. 2nd race I Finished 8th for 162 points, whic will almost definitely be dropped from my Top 3 scores by the time this first stage ends, so I'm gonna go again anyway and try a different strategy. I tried the Alfa in practice, and I haven't been able to get within 0.5s of the time I set in the WRX earlier this week. The Cayman on the other hand is almost even with the WRX's time, and seems to be quicker for me once tire wear effects are turned on.

60 seconds

Yes, thats what I thought.

Some noob got a 60 second penalty at the finish line just ahead of me, and he started swearing at me for ruining his race. I tried telling him about the tire requirements but he said I tapped his car and glitched him a penality of 1 min. Kept swearing at me in the post race chat.. ‍ -_-'

Started 16th cause I qualified on hard, did a 1 stop switch to medium for the last 9 laps and caught some people to finish 8th :D

I somehow got pole by over 0.5s in the final slot of the night, but as usual I failed to turn the pole into a win. I decided to do a 2-stopper with a 9M/8M/1H strategy, as I knew I wouldn't be able to save enough fuel to stretch my 1st stint past halfway to use the Mediums as long as possible, and I'd worked out that this would be way faster tha doing a 9M/9H strategy....if I could get a clear track...

After my 1st pit stop I got leapfrogged by 2 cars who pitted later and obviously didn't need as much fuel on their pit stops. This was on top of the Alfa that had passed me earlier in the race, who kept his position just in front of me after my 1st stop as well. 2 of the 3 cars in front of me were on Hards, and another car was on Mediums and went for a 2-stopper as well. I was held up by the cars on the Hards for the rest of the race, not helped by me completely blanking and missing my braking point into turn 1 and slamming into the wall...

In the end I got 5th, which was only good for 1 more point than my last race, so 163 points that will probably be wiped off the score board anyway. On the surface it wasn't a bad performance, but I was expecting a much bigger points haul, as my practice times led me to believe I could have another 200+ points race. I might be skipping the next 4 rounds, as I don't really like any of the tracks. Depending on how the meta for Sardegna feels, I might have a go there, and if the Wheel of Disappointment gifts me a Gr.4 Lambo I might have a go at Monza too.

Didn’t have great results in first attempt, mostly due to bad qualifying and poor strategy (I’ve only got HOW MUCH fuel left!?) but also due to unfair penalty for being rear ended in T1.... and had time to run Nations Cup race again at 10:20, so why not right? And after qualifying 5th, this time in my Manufacturers Series Porsche, things were looking up. Got away clean... actually got a run on 3rd place off the line even, but rather than finish the pass, played it safe, ducked back behind and I got the inside to protect myself from the T1 debacle that was all but in inevitable. Hail Mary, it worked, I emerged in front of the chaos still in 5th and with a run on the pack behind me. Maybe this was gonna be ok. But no, it was a mirage, as a pack of rabid Meganes all believed they could win the race on the first lap, and of course I was punted off the track and into last place in the off camber right hander on lap one. There was no clear culprit, it was the combined idiocy of a whole pack of them, and it ruined my race again. Managed to claw back some of the spots by the end, some by avoiding others’ crap, some by racing hard, but it sucks. So sick of it. I’m focusing on the manufacturers series so let’s hope it’s better tomorrow, but not counting on that. So frustrating!

@cosmokazi I noticed if someone’s behind you on that turn you better not enter wide.
A while back I made the mistake there.

I tried one although not a track I really love going that direction.
Started 13. Inside. Corvette. Alfa behind gets good jump off the line. Audi in front of me got horrid start but drifted left so I went all the way inside, right side tires on the track limit, but the little Alfa that could got about six inches of overlap by driving over into the pit lane. I’m going straight and he doesn’t lift, guess his plan was to drive onto the grass?
Anyhow he taps me then dead stop into the barrier. The little Alfa was no more.
I cop 3 second pen, hug inside turn 1, get to tenth, get a bit of contact in that same right hand turn, eleventh, serve pen boom Im 19th.18th? Edit I dunno but behind everyone but the Alfa whose driver was on a stretcher and remains of car on the way to salvage...
I was on meds 1 stopped and finished 7th.
I was one of only 2 red dots. Seemed like everyone had a good race, no name calling. To the Alfa driver sorry but wth was your plan? Mow the lawn and take out five or six cars? No way anyone is gonna let you do that!
Anyways it was fun had some good back and forth, no incidents after the start, good racing. Good times! Points wise...120 something...Meh I do these for fun and the good matching more than caring for pts.

I can't seem to figure out how people are using Medium tires for qualifying. The car settings and race options menu seem to block me.

Can someone help? What am I missing?

Just wanted to get the below off my chest.

In the last Nations race (high A/S rated lobby) somebody divebombed me into turn 1 early-ish in the race, breaking very late and using my car as Armco to pass me for position. It infuriated me as there was never a pass on unless someone sent a dirty Hail Mary, which this guy did.

On the last lap, I managed to catch up to him, and on the final chicane pulled managed to get back at him. I spun his car around by tapping his rear quarter panel (PIT). And to top it off, somehow the game gave him a penalty for me hitting him as well, and he lost 3 - 4 positions. It felt great to take revenge against someone who passed me unfairly before. I'm pretty sure he did it on purpose (saw him do it to another).

Felt great for all of 45 seconds, then felt like crap again. I realized that I spent half the race thinking about just getting back at him. Even succeeded. But I had to stoop really low to get him back. Didn't like that colour on me at all.

Even though the revenge hit was probably justified, I messaged the guy on PSN after the race and apologized for getting frustrated and ruining his race. He said he was sorry on his end and he was a bit frustrated too.

Thought it would make me feel better but it didn't. It was a decently rated lobby (190 for winning), and most of the drivers here aren't immature kids, but mostly adults (of varying maturity levels I guess). With all that's going on out there with, there's a lot of frustration and stress regarding health, jobs, etc., and most of us turn to this game to help forget all that and enjoy the game. One may never know what the other person is going through on their end. I'm quite competitive, but I also want to enjoy this game. But the above made me realize that trying to exact revenge on someone didn't fit with my definition of enjoyment.

I'm not preaching on what to do/not to do if someone ruins your race. But I thought I'll post this here to share my experience and perspective with the community here.

This is going to be the first FIA season I'm going to participate in since, thanks to the shutdowns everywhere, I actually have time for them. Can anyone give general advice on what to expect/do?

I practiced a bit tonight for the Manufacturer's Cup tomorrow. I'm signed with Porsche because I know they're a good overall car and I haven't had much experience with other manufacturers, but it doesn't seem like it's the dominant car for the Red Bull Ring. For reference, I'm a low A DR and S SR (31782/90, the SR courtesy of some incidents in Daily Race A yesterday). In free practice with tire wear off and me attacking 100% I can consistently run around 1:30.5xx-1:30.9xx barring mistakes, but when I ran a practice race at a race pace where I'm not constantly attacking every corner, I'm running around 1:31.2xx-1:31.8xx. Is this reasonable or should I be attacking more? One of the biggest issues I'm having is consistently trail braking, since I'm using a G27 and I have to rely on pedal travel rather than pressure, so if I attack every corner, I'm increasing my chance of mistakes, especially as the tires wear.

Speaking of, I'm relieved that, for my first race, I don't need to worry about pitting. The picture below shows how my tires and fuel looked after 15 laps, including a few mistakes where I spun or slid. Of course, I'm not sure if this tire wear is reasonable or not.

Holy frijoles! I will be lucky if I survive the Bull Ring... And I'm a Taurus!

The Mustang(well there's my problem, should be using a Lambo)... the Mustang is so slow to turn. I'm surprised. It's been good in tight turns.

Maybe the tyres have changed. Think I'm going to get smoked in this one.

Firstly, no stop. No managing anything other than car awareness and try not to get a penalty.

Second: Don't give up! Mustang was supremely stable. I guess the slowness kept me in check. 2nd gear pulls helped me the most.

I should not have won that. Got 2nd on Lap 2 after the Beetle got a penalty.
Was able to stay ahead of the NSX for a few laps. Caught the GT-R after setting some fastest laps.
I went wide into T1 on Lap 5. Fell to 4th. Went too deep up the inside, into T3. Fell to 6th.

GT-R gets punted by the Beetle. NSX assumes the lead.
That Lambo stayed behind me as we moved back up to 2nd & 3rd. The NSX had gotten away with a 2.5 second lead. It was starting to slide just past mid-distance.
Seemed like the Lambo dropped back, to stay out of the dirty air. Caught the NSX and it goes off at the final turn, Lap 11.

Ran flawlessly to the end. Only two defensive moves. Both on the last turns. Final turn, the Lambo clips the inside kerb and spears off!

Thanked all the players for patience with me. I could have been punted a few times there. 👍

A night of missed opportunities in Nations.

The Gr.4 Alfa is a car I'm very familiar with, but I'm not a fan of DTG. Particularly that chicane. Spent a fair amount of practice trying to perfect my line through there with mixed results.

20200427171033.jpg

First race qualified 7th, and fought up to 4th place in the first few laps. Was sitting pretty for a very nice points haul and made it all the way to lap 15 before spinning myself on the exit of the 2nd right hander T1/T2 corner. That dumped me in traffic and then got spun out again to finish 15th.

Second race qualified 9th, having been on a lap that would have put me 4th before bottling the chicane. In this one I manage to get up to 6th and actually hold on to it this time. A better result was absolutely on the cards in both races but took the 6th place result. This race felt too risky for me to try again.

It's a shame to hear of others races being ruined by poor driving. I felt very fortunate to be in lobbies where a huge amount of respect was shown. Both times everyone made it from the grid start through the first turns with no significant contact. Everyone was leaving space where needed and it was great to see.

Well here I am again with another round of Nation's Cup.

I had severe thoughts about skipping the race since I despise that 'chicane' on Gardens but I am no skipper of races if I am able to do it,
my first car was the Gr 4 Mustang which I am very good with, the race went well but it became very apparent 'the evil one' a.ka Megane Trophy was the car to go with it on the night.

So the last race at 23:00 UK time I gritted teeth and took to the car I hate for my last effort, you can see the video below but this is in my personal
view my best performance I have ever given, helped no less by the fuel tank of the Megane Trophy but I kept my head under pressure and got a
result I was not expecting given where I started.

My strategy was Hard > Medium's but I am starting to get to grips with the hard compound since the update but was definitely better on medium's.

So next round in Nations is Catalunya gr2, just loving it:) Last exhibition season when gr2 was at Spa I got win, so hopes are high:) Havent tried new updated handling of gr2 but looking at gr4 it might be better. Specific of Catalunya make me think one thing: R.I.P. pad users;)

Wow so happy with the result and feel exhausted after that!!!

No.20 on the door in what is probably the strongest lobby I’ve been in to date. Knew I needed a miracle and that was proved by only managing to qualify 16th. The Gr.3 Viper definitely feels more slidey since the update. Just decided I had nothing to lose so to drive as cleanly and fast as I can. Was already up to 10th after first 2 laps with a few cars falling off the track and myself making some good passes. Ended up in a mini battle with 9th and 8th for the rest of the race, taking 8th place on the final lap as he had a 0.5 penalty. Great race and going for a lay down now

Good lord. I have only done 2 FIA races. Both were bloodthirsty battles. So I don't know if it is matchmaking or what. Did last round at Catalunya last season trying to milk SR, ended up losing a lot as everyone was hitting to pass.
But I figured it was last round and SR A so maybe an outlier.

Manu race tonight, ok qually lap has me p14. Up to p9 by end of lap 1 as some spin and I get punted past others in the second sharp turn. Make a pass and watch a spin so now p7. Others run me down, get a clean pass put one me to p8 on lap 9. Guy behind follows, but keeps pushing me off the track sideways. I fight back and they ease off. Next lap they get a run and do the same thing, slamming me. But they spin themselves out doing it.

Accidentally turn in on p10 lap 12 as I didnt realize they had a run, back off to let them by and lose another spot to a follower. So p11. On lap 14 another 1 gets a run on me inside on the downhill right. I give them room, but they just push me all the way wide onto the sand. And I get the penalty. Still finish p12 but man, there is no real sportsmanship there. Not sure I will really do too many of these. At least with a daily can do another race quick, these things are long.

Since last pre-season I haven't done a single FIA. Last real season it was a lot of fun and clean racing, but since the exhibition season it's been an aggressive ********* and even more dirty than the dailies.
In the last few weeks and especially since the update I also find the dailies cleaner. So FIA is on hold for me...

Yeah I've had that recently too gave room only to be stabbed in the back and my race left in tatters.

The Huracán definitely feels quick around the red bull ring just trying to get a really good lap is annoying as there's a little bit of understeer on turn in that transitions to oversteer if your not careful, still feels better than the pre update drift mode Huracán. Definitely have way more confidence in it in the medium and soft tyres, not so much the hards which it struggles a bit on. Should hopefully have a good race providing I can do a good job in qualifying for once.

Edit: car feels loads better in a practice lobby vs hot lap mode

There is a slight difference in handling between FP and lobbies, which along with tyre wear/fuel consumption switched on will have an effect on your lap times. Usually my laps in lobbies are about 1-2 seconds slower than the FP times I set, and I often find it useful to adjust brake bias settings to account for changes felt between these sessions.

Trail braking is an absolute necessity if you want to improve your times while preserving tyres. I highly recommend watching @Tidgney's tutorial on braking for a thorough breakdown of standard and trail techniques:

Don't worry about not being in the 'dominant' car, though. In one of the test lobbies I took part in, I was hounded by a Porsche for much of the race until he made a mistake; his quali lap was a 1:30.029.

On another note, I guess this is the right time to confirm my signing for the main season (or at least the first stage):

Final and only North America slot for me. 30 minutes of practice on RM tires to figure things out on a track i’ve never been to (in this direction...which has no flow if you ask me). Somehow managed to qualify in the top half of the grid. First few turns were simply “don’t get punted” and I survived.

My goal was 12/6 after reading a strategy above but I had no idea how much fuel saving i would have to do for that. I ended up with 11/7. I had no pace for the top 3 drivers in the lobby and the eventual winner made it 14/4, getting the lead by running those two extra laps still on mediums. I had action the whole start and finish of the race. Not a fan of the track but i’ll take my 4th place finish just the same.

Back with Lambo for this season. Will most likely only be racing the Gr.4 races, but we'll see now the handling of the Gr.3 car seems better. Scored a fat zero in the first round thanks to a disconnect and probably sitting out tonights race, so my season will hopefully start Saturday!

While it was a mind-warp at first (I've never driven DTG backwards), I have to say, it's a neat little track. I do like it better forward, but it's worth saying: the original tracks in GTSport are all fantastic. I think they did a great job with each of them, and find them as fun as any of the real ones, maybe more on average.

And with the current state of real-world racing, including some discussion about running races at some tracks backwards, it's an interesting topic to think about. Any new tracks, if there would be reason for them, should consider to be FIA-certified to be run safely in both directions, and the designer should take the idea into account when creating them. PD have done a fantastic job in this regard, and while I would also like to have some of the classic tracks from older GT games, the original ones in this version are superb.

Nations, Dragon Trail Gardens II, Cayman
After spending a whole week in Tokyo piloting the 4C, I felt like I needed another nimble, mid-engined sled to tackle DTG II. I'd always liked the Cayman's supremely adjustable handling balance, but its long ratios and lack of outright grunt usually had me passing it over. But last weekend's Manufacturer experience at Suzuka, spent fending off Caymans from my M4's rear bumper, and watching how gentle they are on tyres made me reconsider.

In my first attempt, I completely blew it at qualifying, going off the track twice (despite practicing for over an hour...sigh). I started dead last in 20th, but I got a rocket start, weaving through the chaos of T1 & 2 to make up almost 10 places! But it all went south in the second sector, when I got bumped off and back to 19th. In the end, I went for 10H/8M, stopping only because the tank was dry, and managed to finish 9th. In my second try, I qualified a more respectable 8th, but I blew it at the launch, turning off traction control before 1st gear was done....doh! Dropped to 12th by T2 and spent the rest of the race making up places to finish 7th on a 10M/8H strategy.

I have to say, what the Cayman lacks in grunt, it makes up for with sweet, sweet handling and braking. I made up most of my places in the T4-5-6 triple left hander, gracefully dancing past others who struggled with understeer and made frequent visits to the barrier with my mid-engined goodness on their tail. What a joy! The 4C can dance, too, but it's on a knife edge. Its short wheelbase makes it far more susceptible to losing balance upon slight rubbing or overzealous throttle stabs. The Cayman is far more stable, with just as much mid-corner adjustability. And it sounds far sweeter.

20200429132030.jpg

Manufacturers, Red Bull Ring, M6
I only attempted one slot today and qualified an average 12th in the M6. I just couldn't seem to break 1:31. I don't think I'll ever be a consistent top qualifying kinda driver...the pressure to do it in 2 laps with traffic always gets to me. My goal nowadays is just to make up at least one place every race. The M6 isn't particularly spectacular in any area. But it is stable, and has a friendly, predictable handling balance as long as you're cautious with the throttle on tight corner exits. My most satisfying overtake was after tailing a Namco-liveried Supra for 3 laps or so, staying within 0.2 seconds most of the way. At the hairpin at the top of the hill, he overcooked his braking by a touch, and I saw my chance. I nailed the apex as he went slightly wide, and I got more exit speed. We weren't quite side-by-side at the exit, but I managed to get the jump on him with better traction and a tighter line. Miraculously, we didn't touch, and I snatched his place. In the end, I finished 6th with a clean race bonus.

20200429191744.jpg

That's 3 consecutive races of making up places, which is really something for me. My first FIA season as a B/S driver is going pretty decently so far. I'm having fun, and that's what counts!

Hardly any practice for this one as had been repeatedly disconnected from FIA races recently.

Unexpectedly connected for slot 3 and used the night to test whether it would continue to stay connected (and boost DR).

Slot 3: Started P11, finish P7.
Slot 4: Started P4, got spun on L1 down to P8, recovered to P4 on lap 5. But with no slipstream it was a very lonely 70% of the race.
Slot 5: Started P2, took lead on L2 and stayed there until the end.

Side note: Slipstream is absolutely critical here, both in qualifying and the race. If you are at the front of the train you will just drag slower cars along with you.
