What if a driver ghosted after the second weaving maneuver? No disadvantage on speed as far as being a ghost, you just can't block for awhile because you cheated.

As the game is now, I have a hard time feeling sorry for myself when I get punted. Everyone is doing it. I try to keep to the inside entering challenged corners and I do try to give room when being passed (doesn't always work though on cold or warn tires).

I keep track of my time gap to the leader, which is really important to consider because normally pit stops will spread the field. I try to maintain that gap to the lead and use that as a guide. I mean, if I'm on someone's rear bumper, and the gap to the lead is staying consistent & reasonably close, then I can focus on saving fuel and tires. Until... ...the guy behind me arrives ruining my domestic tranquility. Many times, the impatient guy behind will take out the guy holding me up!
 
Last night nothing worked for me. I did three races and finished 20th-18th-19th due to a combination of one error, being hit and punted, and maybe questionable 3 stop strategy on top of if. I ended up in situations that it was almost impossible to recover because of the pace, tires being eaten fast, etc.

I never liked RBR but I had always had great results there. I came in with some confidence that I would walk away with some good-great results, especially after my best practice time being 1:35.7 or 1.8% gap of lead driver.

In one occasion, someone hit me hard on T2 and I hit the car ahead of me, and after that, my car was in limp mode till I reached T3! Damage applied I assume.

All in all, forgettable evening but lessons learned. Congrats to all here that got good results! Below, being stuck on grass with no traction, for your entertainment :D

There is such a thing as picking your battles. Any sort of defending will cause your lap times to suffer which can result in losing more positions later.

Absolutely, and that's part of racecraft too - recognising when defending, or even passing, will do you more harm than good when it comes to the long race.

I can't wait until we have a functional penalty system again and these things have to be part of the consideration, rather than just punting people out of the way :lol:

Maybe it's because I'm never in the top splits, but slipstream doesn't seem to ever be a consideration in most of my races except on tracks like Tokyo and Blue Moon Bay. In fact I still try to get a big gap to the guy in front of me, because I'm still worried about being held up by them if I happen to be a lot faster of if they make a mistake. With qualifying being as short as it is now, there's no way I'd risk my lap being ruined by a slower driver in order to gain a few tenths in the slipstream.

I wouldn't expect it to be that prevalent in lower splits; the time gaps are too wide between drivers. Ask anyone in the top few splits in EMEA about this, though. It can sometimes be a literal traffic jam at the last corner because no one wants to lead the train and get a poor time. This phenomenon has trickled down to NA and I don't like it.

And also people have different rhythms and not very often the exact same line. You can try to follow someone closely but at least in my experience, most often than not, you mess up your lap hence you are better on your own.

Top split is impressive.I was watching David Perel's stream at St Croix and he was literally on someone else's bumper the entire qualifying lap and both of them were top speed on the very same line every single time. In the end he got the pole because of the draft.

It's a 13 minute session. You still have to do a whole outlap to start a lap so it's essentially 1 shot

So that's 5 laps of the 24hr in total. My fingers/bladder/eyes are gonna be toast doing a few of these races sat night 👍:)

Yea! @dlshearon We had some racing going. I was holding on for my life in the last lap. In the live streamed video you can hear me screaming in the end :-) Love this game when it provides races like this.:cheers:

Been reading this thread and I agree with you 100%.

For example, if someone is trying a two stop on soft tires, meaning they have to work their way through traffic, the risk is always the traffic. If I’m doing a one stop and I know a two stopper who started behind me is trying to get through, he damn well better earn it. I ain’t giving it to him, as the longer I can hold him off the better it is for me. Of course....defending without being a douche.

But again as you have also pointed out. This strategy doesn’t work when they can just punt you off.

Only thing bout that is, what I've learned from watching (V8)Supercars, know who you're racing.

Many times, drivers will move over to let someone through. Yes, we're all racing one another, but.. BUT picking your battles may not necessarily mean holding someone off as long as possible, it can harm your lap time to say, a player four places lower than you.

In the past, plenty of (V8)Supercar racers let others by, for mechanical reasons, damage, tyre set, etc., those instances determined why a driver moves over. Yet, I still see some fast racers still move over, knowing they are racing someone else.

I've done it in game and other players I've raced, have picked up on it as well. Also, no doubt it's done on a race by race basis. Most of these no stoppers, take all the strategy out of racing.

Yeah sorry mate, as the driver you 'kindly escorted' into the sand, you're a dirty prick and you've embarrassed yourself. Imagine congratulating yourself for punting someone in an FIA race, then gloating in the lobby about it, and then gloating on a forum about it. If you're confronted by three others in a lobby after a race, then maybe you're the problem.

Also, given the FIA races are some of the only time I have to myself each week and I look forward to them a lot, it really bums me out that someone could take such relish in being so malicious. Makes me sad.

Look, I apologise for ruining your race, I know exactly how that feels as I've had over a year of it. But all you had to do was brake. Both heading into the hairpin when you came in off the line and rammed me to get by, ruining my overtake on the WRX, and then further ahead at Rauch where you went off. You would have still gained a place over that **** in the WRX, and you wouldn't have come off. You wanted the right side of the track, and you got it. But I am genuinely sorry that you got stuck in the middle of a fight between me and another driver, your driving was nowhere near as egregious as theirs, or that other ******* in the Cayman, and the rest of your race was some very solid driving. The reaction was not quite commensurate with the offence, but in the words of Vincent Vega, "you had to expect a reaction".

And based on the races I've seen, excessive defending tends to result in someone shoving that person off. I'm not saying that's the right course of action but never underestimate what people are willing to do when they lose patience.

....and that's my point. What is the point of drivers attacking positions and hitting other drivers out of the way, when the attacker has a penalty of a second or more, and you're metres away from the penalty zone? It's also called being considerate of others; do you really want to hold up someone with more pace and skill then you? By weaving all over the circuit? By braking in corners that require no braking at all? This applies both in qualifying and in the race I might add, had several qualifiers ruined by drivers with no pace, no skill, and not even an idea of the circuit layout judging by the race at DTG. There's a blue flag for a reason. The flashing lights signal exists for a reason. Imagine a GT class car holding up an LMP1 car and you'll get what I'm talking about, they're running a different race. I lost 2nd at Catalunya because I moved over to let the other driver through, but I'm happy I did it and still got a podium place. I was staying out on dud tires and I passed the pits as they remerged on fresh soft tires. I knew I couldn't hold them off and I didn't want to cause an accident by slowing too hard in front of them. It's called picking your battles.

It is not, unless the person you are trying to pass is swerving and acting dodgy, you are not entitled to anything at all. You find the line and the speed, you get past. Otherwise you stay behind.

In real life racing does not work the way you say, sure drivers complain all the time when they are stuck behind other cars but nobody expects people to move out just because someone is supposedly faster.

Edit: just to add more context, IRL if you drive a F1 Ferrari or Merc or whatever faster car and qualify last, do you expect people to give you way just because you are in a Ferrari? Don't think so.

Sry to bring back the subject but i couldn´t read in time..., and i think we don´t have to spam with offtopic.

In the particular situation and race i was talking about, i got my qualy ruined by a driver that i gave a 4 second gap but even with the flying lap ruined i qualified 4st..., people make mistakes in their laps then instead of leaving race line free they try to compensate and ruin others laps by blocking i lost at least half a second to avoid the incident, the other driver behind me in my splipstream got the pole.

Race started in turn 2 the 2 drivers in front made a mistake i was taking the inside but was punted from behind making me lose a lot of time and got overtaked..., i manage to recover after 3 laps i cacthed up the guy that was in 3rd he was just in a slow pace and the struggle was with him, but was ok after i overtaked him he lost 2/3 seconds and my slipstream and got slwaled by all the other drivers, was him that wasn ot in his place in the race and made my life hard but was fun anyway, all those situations qualy ruined and the incidents that made the overdefending driver rise that up in grid no his ability to have a better pace, yes he showed good defending abilitys but in the process he losed time that in the other hand if he played smart could benefit from my splitstream and try to build more gap, was just that my point, depending on the situation and timing in the race overdending i think is not a smart move just that, but i agree that people must defend their position if they whant to.., if it´s the smart choice, well that will be showed in the final position in the race.

Anyone who does this should be dragged into the street and shot.

If you crash, spin, or get a shortcut penalty your qualifying lap is burned. Stay out of the way of other people who are on a good lap and make your real pace show in the race. It's basic racing respect.

Same for people who come out of the pits and go right to the racing line in Q while someone on a hot lap is coming up quick from behind. It drives me nuts!!
 
All good arguments but sometimes i think some people don´t do it on purpose or is just lack of awarness, i tend to be pissed of a lot when that kind of things happens, when i mentioned that race situation a was pissed has hell, but after the blood temperature lows a bit it´s all ok :lol:
Must learn to calm down cause during races if i and i think in general when we get on our nerves it´s more easy to make mistakes :).
 
Put me firmly in the 'pick your battles' camp.

On Sunday in my Manu race, I was in 3rd with a Huracan in 2nd. I was on hard tyres and he was on mediums in the first stint. There was 1.7 seconds between us pretty consistently, and we both pitted on lap 7. I went on the medium, he went on the hard. I passed him shortly after and he then spent the next several laps trying to pass me. Near enough every corner he's poking his nose and trying to go side by side through corners, which he's managed to reach because of the slipstream and because I'm in a GT-R taking wide lines to try and preserve my tyres. If he'd held back, we would both have been faster. As it was, we lost a load of time, he finished 4th, I finished 6th.

In these 20+ minute races, you're not going to win it on the opening laps. Race with a brain, not as if your life depends on defending on every corner, or taking every place possible regardless of the consequences.
 
I'd love to see the pit exit blend line rule enforced with a penalty of some sort, both during qualy and the race. Last week's FIA at Barcelona was a complete joke on the straightaway as people made their pit stops, then proceeded to exit the pits and drive straight onto the racing line as others who didn't pit are cruising along at full tilt. I mean, I get why they are doing it, but we all know it isn't allowed (in real life).

But again, it comes down to a complete lack of racing respect. A lack of respect that is only continuing to erode during this latest version of the penalty system.

Red Bull Ring pit entry is tough. I actually put on my right indicator and stuck to the inside line, when I had cars on my bumper. Catalunya is another tricky pit entry.

Getting penalties there would be bad. Yes... bad.
