General Model Kit Building Thread

Sorry for double-posting, but I have a question:
When I buy the next model, should I go for a silver Subaru BRZ, or should I buy the Nissan GT-R (R35)?
Tell me your opinion.

Hey guys


Just a quick question for anyone that might know

I just sprayed my first plastic model with my airbrush, and I had two little drip marks come up
Would I be best off rubbing it down with some extremely fine wet rub? I'm not sure how to get rid if them.
It's just a base coat white bit I don't want it to show up under the top coat!

You need to sand it off or else it will show up later.
And remember, it's better to spray more than once lightly than to spray heavily once and get drip marks.

So I sanded it and did the second coat


The airbrush started to spit drops of paint so now it's not looking too good
Hopefully there's enough paint on there now that I can sand it back enough to get rid of them! Don't want to have to restart..

Any ideas why it would have done that? Too thin' paint maybe?

It could be the paint. It happened to me once because my paint was too thick actually.
It could also be the airbrush. Is the nozzle clean?

I've always been wanting to get one but then I think about paints and detailing and all that kinda stuff.

Might just get one to kill time with a nice end-product.

You need to be very careful with the details and spray-painting (for a Tamiya) if you want a good product. 👍

You'd have to do it very smoothly and clean, and sometimes you'd want to do it in one-way (i.e. from left to right/vice versa), so as to make the paint on the body looks nice and straight.

It looks really nice though, I'll most likely buy a box or 2 and try it out myself.

Don't forget to buy the 3 layers of polishing compound.

It all depends on who's building it. It has a steady learning curve as almost anyone can build a model, but the results will vary greatly on the skill and experience of the builder. I suggest you try it out. If you enjoy it enough you'll build more and the results will get better and better.

It actually is regular spray painting. Yet at the same time it's not as you need to be more careful. You need to watch out so that your paint doesn't run, you need to spray in a dust-free environment (though I never do, my 'paint station' is the perfect example of what NOT to do) and you need to make sure your paint is thick enough.

Much of it comes with practice too.



And I'm glad you like my models so much. It really makes me want to search for ways to make my Lancia Stratos look realistically dirty so that I can hide all of the dust in the nice white paint and the misplaced decals.

Thanks for the advice Apok. I have a teeny bit of experience with spray paints, but most of the time, it comes out crappy, with paint running and all.
So my biggest concern of making a model myself would be the paint.

Saw this on my local ebay for $20.
Thought it might be a good idea since the C9's silver body colour is somewhat the same as the stock body colour. Good for a beginner, no?

All Tamiya models come with car bodies similar to the spray-paints recommended by Tamiya.

The inner structure of the car doesn't seem very user-friendly, I can only say.

But that depends whether the model comes with more individual parts or less. If it's the latter, then you will have to be extremely careful when painting.

I can't recommend that model for a beginner. There's plenty of fiddly parts around the engine and cockpit and there's a large amount of decals.
I'd suggest a civilian car. Those are usually not as complex as racing cars.

Oh and from the picture I saw the body looked like it's moulded in white. Regardless you need to paint the car. A bad paint job will always look better than bare plastic. Unless I misunderstood you because really the colour of the plastic doesn't matter once you paint it.

have been absent from modeling for about 15 years and decided to take it up again. I used to build WW1 and WW2 fighters but now my interest is in 1/20 scale Formula 1 cars from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s. Over the last few months I have purchased hobby supplies including my first airbrush. I now have the following Tamiya 1/20 scale kiys:

McLaren Honda MP4/5B

Williams Renault FW 13B

Jordan 191

Benetton Ford B192

Lotus Ford 107B

Braun Tyrrell Honda 020

Is one of these kits a better choice for me to start with for my first build than another? In other words are they all at the same level of skill required to build or is one kit any easier (less complex) than another? Or is there any of these kits I should not start with for my first build?

Wheels are not broken just cambered and by the way these are 1/24 scale models. I guess you never of heard of a close up shot, using a close slightly out of focus low down angle. If your going to be a jerk and smart mouth and least know what your talking and know your car culture and history. My kits come out of aoshima's Gra-Champ boro shakotan kiado circuit racer line and are very expensive and very hard to get. which you obviously know nothing about

Anymore camber and you got floating cars.

The style is called shakotan in japan and it a 70's 80's styled of over the top cars originating from japan from yakuza bashers, and is not a style for everybody but has its place. The extreme camber with overly stretched tires on wide wheels was a technique used buy old drifters of the 70's and 80's to create oversteer back before all the tuning company's popped up with all the coilovers and other parts we have today. This was a era of tuning has been around long before the internet and long before you could order part online. This Era is original JDM not that stuff kids claim now. If you dont know do some research. IF you dont like it cool but keep your smart comments to your self especially if you dont know the history behind something

Exactly everybody is not going to fit into the same cookie cutter mold like everyone else and doesn,t want to. And if your going to talk smack about something at least know what your talking a bout' cause anything opinion is just that opinion. Anything style or tastes, or personal preference is just that opinon, and is not fact. I have the most likes on MSforums and the most views as well and was asked to do a tutorial on how i do my kits which im sure is more than most of you have accomplished in the model world. Im on a few forums and i get countless amount of question and pm's from where i get my kits and kit parts from daily. And i am more than happy to help. I dont go around other forums a down people work if i think its crap i just keep it to myself. Why because im grown and im not childish enuff to stoop to such a low level.
