Well I have a Jeep Wrangler, it's a good beginner's vehicle.

1. manual transmission - check
2. fit 4 people comfortably - check
3. preferred awd but pretty negotiable - 4wd so check
4. reliable - check not to mention easy to repair
5. fun to drive - check especially off-road (cept not when it's windy)
6. ok on gas - check, gets around 16/22 course mine is carbureted and needs a new engine...but that's beside the point.
I disagree. It's a great car for someone that wants a good off-road vehicle, but as a dd, not so much.

1. The manual transmisson does that thing where the car lurches back and forth if you get it perfectly, or ride the clutch a bit, on all manual jeeps I've driven (3 or 4) and with anyone else that drove them, so it wasn't the driver.

2. The back seats are too small and there's almost 0 leg room. Or room for anything else

3. Not really the same thing, not to mention the 4wd kills your gas mileage a good bit.

4. I can live with that, I don't remember too many problems with the people who owned them, although that's not saying much, everything sort of comes off in a few minutes, and never really fits "right" but it's a wrangler and it was meant like that, so whatever.

5. They are fun to drive around, but I don't know about daily. Really freaking cold in the winter.

6. Not THAT great, but I could live with that.

Hah well it's my dd and it's not that bad.
1. The tranny on mine seems fine, course I could just be used to it.
2. The back seat is actually pretty spacious and has legroom as long as the front seats aren't all the way back. Plus, I think it has plenty of cargo space, but that's just me.
3. The 4WD gets me through mostly everything here, plus it's only engaged when needed and true gas mileage suffers a bit, but I don't mind since at least I'm not worrying about going in the ditch.
5. The carb in the winter sucks, but with FI it's good. Inside, it's cold at first but gets pretty warm with a good heater, even with the softtop/half doors.
6. For all I know, it could be better in the city, but I have a heavy right foot and there are a lot of hills here.

Oh yah, forgot to mention I picked mine up for $2500 though try to stick with s later than '90, due to them having the EFI 4.0 I6.

My friend is getting one soon. I'll talk to him about it.

But what a way to go. As Jeremy Clarkson says, enter heaven on a flaming fireball backwards into the pearly gates.

And it was Richard Hammond that said it. Otherwise, all good... :D

If in the end you have to go cheap and boring, just an if, might I suggest you get a Hyundai Sonata if you have them in the States. Something about Hyundais makes me not hate them, even like them maybe. Their new styling direction is a hit in my books, and they're bringing out a V8 sedan and RWD high powered Nissan Z fighting V6 Coupe. That's cool. Plus Hyundais are known for reliability.

Eh, I for some reason distaste hyundais. My dad had a sonata and it fell apart after a few years.

The Hyundai Excel is a very reliable little car, Corolla territory. Did you get that car in the States? I'd take those new Genesis cars anyday od the week over anything else from Asia. But anyway, socomplayer2 doesn't want a Hyundai, what's currently on the cards?

We've got the Accent, Elantra/i30, Tiburon/Coupe, Sonata, Azera and eventually the Genesis, no to mention the SUVs...

But you never had the Excel? (since discontinued). Wow, it was pretty much their best and most reliable car until now.

We had it, but back then, no one liked it. It has since been replaced by the lukewarm Accent that looks more like Dory from Finding Nemo than any other car on the market today...

I don't like the Excel's looks or performance but it gets good mileage and is reliable. I only like Hyundai's newest styling direction.

I have been having bad luck lately with dealerships. No one will take me seriously or even talk about payments just because I am 17:tdown:. I think they are just thinking I am there to joy ride... even though that is part of the reason:).

Thats because it usually is the reason.

Heres the thing:

You've got to act like an adult, which includes the proper dress and attitude. Just because you have money doesn't mean that they will take you seriously. For now, you may want your Dad to come with you for a while...

Talk to them about the car, point out things you know about it, ask questions if you have them, and they may offer a ride. If they don't no big deal. You can usually tell a lot by just sitting in the car too.

Ok, so a little update on my situation. Me and my dad was talking and around augest I will get a car. Lately the the date for my for getting a car is december because I would be 18. But since I have just got another job and from the end of june till augest I am going to Atlanta to work with my uncle I will have a good amount of money. I am estimating about 5000 dollars, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. Also my dad is going to chip in maybe a few grand. Plus I an going to have to pay for most of the insurance and gas.

So some new requirements.

With in the price range (about 7-8 grand?)
Manual (unless its an suv)
fun to drive
reliable

I still like my original choices but I want to see what you say.

Well the fun to drive doesn't have to apply to the suv's. A I like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen explorers, 1st gen lincoln navigators and 1st gen expeditions. But I prefer a stick car over any suv.

SUVs are good for one thing and one thing only from what I can tell- rusting. Fourbies are fun for off-roading.

Have you looked into a Neon ACR? They aren't really fast but they came with sport suspension and a 5 speed which makes them fun to drive. I have a buddy that owns on and apart from having to replace the head gasket, which is just what you have to do on a Neon, it's been ok for him. It's decent on gas as well.

If not there are always Civics of a million different years and body styles, which can be fun, fuel efficient, and manual.

uh, you might wanna sneak over here to PA and car shop. there's an 92 EightyEight for sale at one of our dealerships at the moment for only 299 bucks!!

7 or 8 large will get you something nice over here.

I do like neons so I'll look up some acr's. I also was looking online today and I saw some real nice mkIII gti's all for under 5 grand!
