Anyone have any good songs that most people don't know about. I'd have to say one is The Devil Came Up to Michigan.

I would nominate the whole 'Ghostwriters' album, from Rob Hirst's (drummer from Midnight Oil) side-project band, 'Ghostwriters'.

Rob's a fairly handy musician - I saw them live (Ghostwriters) at a pub near home a few years ago, and saw Rob play lead electric guitar, acoustic guitar, drums and harmonica.

No seriously - I think they have about two dozen renditions of that song. I have a few live albums, and the perforamnces are all very different.

The Junkies rule even more live.

Well, I'd be referring to the studio version off the greatest hits album - the one they used for 'Natural Born Killers'.

I listen to a lot of Jackopierce (band that is no more ...) and Dispatch. I also dig on The Rentals.

Jackopierce is like, songs about love and songs about war.

Dispatch is more of the same.

I'm more partial to the version on The Trinity Session, because that album also includes the accordian-blues version of "Walking After Midnight" as well.

Cowboy Junkies are amazing. Margo is one of the few female singers in the world who doesn't sound like she has her tongue between her teeth all the time.

Erm - do you have examples of singers that sound that way? I'm having trouble imagining what that would sound like.

The other thing I like about CJ is that they understand and practice tasteful restraint. In a musical world where it seems like someone's always trying to be bigger and try harder to blow you away - CJ just lets it happen. Plus Michael is one helluva songwriter.

Another little-known artist (he got a little play with a song here on the alternative Govt radio station here with 'Cold Blooded Old Times') I'm into is Smog. Very gifted songwriter, the stuff's generally pretty simple, story driven, and musically fairly sparse - just how I like it.

You gotta respect a guy who writes a song entitled 'Dress Sexy at my Funeral'.

Actually, to be a little off-topic, I picked up the new Beck album, 'Seachange' - very impressive, it has a mellow, almost country (as in proper country, not that Shania Twain rubbish) feel to it - definitely recommend this album. I'd rate it right up there with the Coldplay album.
