A larger rim weighs much more than a slightly thicker tire, trust me. For example most 15" rims weigh anywhere from 15-20 lbs. A typical 17" rim can weigh between 25-30 lbs. That may not seem like a lot, but when that's wrapped in rubber, and set on all four corners, that's a lot more weight for the car to work with. The suspension is slower, steering response is delayed, and the power your car puts down at the wheels goes down as well due to the larger (even though slight) radius. So you can see why a smaller rim size is more beneficial.

yea big rims suck, but racing wheels r way lighter then that, my 15" wheels on my car weigh 12lbs and there r sum 17" rims that weigh that....
but it's a larger rotational mass... it depends on what car u r puting the rrims on though, like u wouldn't put 15" rims on a GT-R, 17" or 18" would be perfect...depending on the hp and brakes the car has.

Exactly! I mean it depends on the application. Obviously, a smaller car can get away with using a smaller wheel, that's just common sense. And I also realize what you're saying about racing wheels, those are super light, but I was just generalizing most aftermarket wheels, not racing wheels. For example Rota wheels are super light, great bang for the back too (even if they are just rip offs of more expensive names). Your example of the GT-R is perfect. Generally, for my own personal theory, if I was racing a car I wouldn't put a larger wheel on than it comes with stock. Now for daily driving that's a different story but I still adhere to that rule myself because I, personally, do not like large wheels (we have a lot of potholes around here, so I use 14" steelies in the winter and the stock 15" alloys in the summer).

Inline with all this wheel talk, don't forget Kaz mentioned, in an article/interview, changing wheels for your car will change the rotational mass, thus improving or ruinning your cars performance.

I bet that the different wheels available for purchase will have the weight of that wheel displayed.

Excellent point. I hope that we will be able to see how much the wheels weigh and the positive/negative effects listed before purchase. That way all those wannabe ricers out there will get their asses handed to them when they're rollin' on their 19's in the Civic! :p
 
You don't always want bigger rims & tires. The bigger the radius, the more power is needed to get the wheel traveling around at the desired speed. A good example of this is in the SCCA with the Showroom Stock division. Most cars in this division are Miatas with little 14" or 15" rims.
Unless you want to sacrifice power for looks, the BIG (20 inches or so) rim options are probably not a great idea, but it is a game. So if PD wants to keep the GT series authentic and a real driving simulator, they will apply this fact to their Parts section.
I personally, as a young teen, enjoy seeing the "street racers" with big rims, but you have to keep in mind - Gran Turismo is a driving simulator, not a show-car simulator.

I guess I take too long to type - Majarvis just said the same exact thing. Sorry.
 
My brother's car comes on 19" wheels as standard. Lordy!

Yeah, I wasn't saying that cars which come with large wheels as standard equipment are ridiculous, but in all honesty, it just looks weird to see 19" rims on a little Civic hatchback with rust and a fart can exhaust :lol:
 
I agree. There's some older kid that lives near me that drives an early 90s Plymouth Acclaim with 20" rims and a HUGE rear spoiler. It wouldn't look so bad on a different car, but this is a rusty POS that's probably worth the same amount of money as my new 27" TV.
 
The new Subaru Impreza WR1 - quickest factory Impreza ever made. 316hp, 300lbft, 0-60mph in 4.2s, 0-100mph in 10.67s. Absolutely bloody frightening.
 
Nice! Not bad specs. On the other hand, you might have to expect something like that out of the same manufacturer that has won multiple WRC championships.

lol, your brothers car accelerates to 100 mph in about the same time mine takes to get to 60 :lol:

EDIT: I wonder if the WR1 will be in GT4?

the other reason you want big rims is big brakes, the larger the rim, the larger the diameter rotor you can fit. a car with 14" or 15" inch rims the brakes are limited
 
True, but again there are negative effects with even larger rotors. I know it might not sound legit, but even with the larger rotor with more powerful brakes (and subsequently the larger rim to accomodate that larger rim) you will lose power at the wheels because more inertia is required to rotate that larger radius. It's a trade off however, but you will lose power at the wheels because the engine has to push that little bit more to move the larger radius. A prime example of this was a show I was watching on Speed Channel (no, not that retched joke of a show called Tuner Transformation). I think it's called Sportscar Revolution or something. They're working on a project Acura RSX Type S (no, these guys aren't ricing it out, they know what they're doing). They're working with King Motorsports, which is the North American distributor for Mugen. They have done several engine upgrades, but then they installed 17" Mugen wheels wrapped in Toyo rubber, and installed a StopTech big brake kit. Now, they did some pretty substantial engine upgrades right from Mugen, but after they installed the larger wheels and larger brake rotors, they LOST 12whp on the chassis dyno than before they installed the brake kit. So it just goes to show you how important it is to pay attention to things like that ;)

Well... hard-working SOB :D

He's currently got an Impreza RB5, but he's ordered the WR1 (only half of the 500 are left - due for delivery on 2nd April... :D) and is trying to ditch the RB5. £12,000 to anyone who wants it.

The RB5 is SO quick I felt the blood drain from my face and pool at the back of my head. The WR1 is 1s quicker to 60mph and 4s quicker to 100mph. And will hit a LIMITED 155mph (!). Makes the 22B look like a kids toy.

But even the WR1 is done in by the Type25. But that's not official, so stuff it :D

I saw that same exact show. It tells you about how they lost power on the dynamometer and so on. That's where I saw what I posted earlier about using more power to make the wheel travel blah, blah, blah. . .

Only available as a modification of an imported car, from an importer in the Midlands (UK).

like honestly... these kinda options of being able to tune to ur specific performance is great... but however, that'll be even more R&D, and we prob won't see the game till li ke 2005 hahah...
but i do have some idea to contribute to this discussion, is that instead of buying "turbo stage 1", "turbo stage 2"... how about having brand specific performance parts? like GReddy turbo, Turbonetics, HKS turbo.... Tokico Suspension, Tein Suspension... or sth even crazier such as engine swap.... where i'm getting is that different brand of the same performance parts will have different performance characteristic... like Tein suspension will have stiff setup, but bounce around like crazy, and will precise, yet sensitive control... and with tokico suspension you'll have less-stiff setup, less bounce, but more body-roll and more forgiving control...
so wut i'm saying it's being able to install parts according to the characteristic of the car... and not only buy, install, tune with numbers, go test drive... doesn't work, retune again...
it should be like for example pick and compare 2 parts, install, test with part A... good performance gain, but not quite wut u want to suit the car or the track, so test with part B, comparable performance, and more suitable for the car... keep it, tune it, race it....

got wut i mean?
 
That won't happen.

What'll happen is that each manufacturer will demand that their turbo/whatever is better than the other manufacturers. So either PD will make them all the same and piss everyone off, or make one which is obviously better than the others and piss all but one manufacturer off. Meaning GT5 will be back to how it was before.

Besides, can you imagine setting up a fair online race with 8 million different manufacturers' parts?

"Err... take the Evo VIII, add Toyo Proxes' supersoft tyres, Bilstein shocks, the Greddy turbo, the Brembo brakes, errrr.... add the Prodrive ECU" (etc).

That's really cool. I guess someone in Canada or the US could always buy those parts and have them installed themselves (since we already have the 2.5L). But then again you can probably get aftermarket parts that put out much more than 350hp for the 2.5L in North America...

No. It's a 2.5 imported and modified by Litchfield Imports. It's given a full SVA type approval and everything's above board, but it's not an official Subaru. As it stands, the WR1 is the quickest official Subaru Impreza ever - and retains the 2.0 Boxer 4.

You can also get the Spec-C, which IS an official Subaru model, but it's not imported to Europe by Subaru, so they wouldn't recognise it as an official Subaru in Europe. Confusing, huh? :D
 
And what is the difference between the STi and the Spec-C?

Tuning options? I'm just going to come up with some new or returning options:

ENGINE SWAPPING. It may or may not be a good choice for car afficionados, but when you feel that you want to take a street car and make it exclusive to racing, you may choose to swap engines. In Ridge Racer V, you can modify an "Extra" class car to use its "Oval" specifications which gives you more speed at the price of downgraded handling. I say that this should be an option available to almost every car that can be race modified. So if you like the car, you can tune it up instead of selling it because it lacks power. Think of in GT2. The VW New Beetle had about 115 stock, but the New Beetle GT had 424 horsepower and turboed out. Think if you could have that kind of power to mod the engine out to have more horsepower, or to change aspirations. And to you muscle car fans, you can benefit from this because you may purchase crate motors for your American beauties.

BODY KITS. People may disagree with me because they don't want to have their cars "riced out.' That is not where I'm going with this. Read on. If a car can be race modified, some body kits and seperate parts can be added to get more air to the engine and enhance aerodynamics. If you have a powerful motor but don't have enough air to cool it off, a special body kit can help. Not enough downforce? The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in Le Mans 1999 had aerodynamic troubles. So they added on winglets to aid in downforce. If you know your Le Mans, the winglets STILL didn't work. You can put on lighter body parts to lower weight and enhance aerodynamics. Will you see a Toyota Celica with a bodykit looking like a McLaren F1? Very UNlikely to happen. I don't think GT fans will appreciate "rice" parts. Look at what you could do in Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3. Won't happen in GT4 or any GT game even if illegal street racing were a seperate mode in the game. And if you have one of those muscle cars with a tall engine, you may even have a special hole in the hood to let the engine perform.

TURBO BOOST. Adding turbo pressure boosts horsepower, and this was available in GT1. However, a lot of pressure could equate to turbo fires (unlikely to happen in GT4. The manufactuers wouldn't be happy). I still remember racing my 3000GT with full boost at 930 hps while smoking most everything on track. Turbo boost would be interesting when you have bought a turbo kit for a car.

DECAL KITS. Decal kits should be in the "Others" category, and will give you a chance to modify the car to include racing decals. In Gran Turismo 2, there was a normal Toyota Altezza, and then an Altezza that has some side decals, but still a street car. And don't forget the Motorsport Elise. It qualifies as a street car despite the racy title. Want to personalize your car, even if it isn't a track-dominating monster, decals are your best bet. They don't have to be the "rice" ones you all speak of. Now, I did mention a "Body Paint" option in an old thread, so that can be key to making your car look less dull. Only thing I probably wouldn't recommend for GT4 would be clear coats and chameleon paint (show cars don't make race cars even though the Speed 12 has chameleon paint).

That is all. I may have more ideas in the future.
