There are plenty of sounds not directly related to the engine note from what I see.
That list however made me remember that in GT there's a lack of sounds other than the engine/exhaust.

Brake hiss, gearbox gear engage/disengage noises (both outside the car at the gearbox and inside at the lever), pedal noises (during sporty driving they do make noise, especially the brake pedal because of the brake pump and again especially when the ABS is engaged), keys slamming on the steering column under heavy or sudden lateral acceleration, engine fans turning on when the coolant temperature raises, etc, etc, etc.

Cockpit/bumper (from what I've seen in the last Gamescom demo, they share the same engine sounds, so this time they can be considered the same in a way) views sound so lifeless also because of the lack of many other sounds that occur in real life.

Guys, I think you're getting carried away. Some of the games we consider to have good sounds also use maybe 4 samples per rpm range(idle/low/mid/high), 7-8-9 samples will quite do the trick, and the only way right now, is to fool you, because we can't have real audio physics sim in real time.(and I don't mean that in a bad way, it just needs to be convincing, and it can be)

FT-86G used in this vid, and you can hear it. Same sound as in the FT-86G trailer IMO

I know a while back a bunch of people thought this trailer was dubbed, but it isn't.
Even the tyre sounds are like what we heard at Gamescom

tyre sounds from Gamescom, sound pretty similar

I was watching this video and it came to me about the sounds of the debris hitting the floor underneath.

Anyone hear this in the race cars in GT5 ??

Nope. but many other sim bin titles have that, they have alot of ambient particle and non engine car noises that really add alot of depth.

I think he's a GT fan at least since 4 because he knew all the tricky parts of r246 and followed an impeccable line despite the chunky 800hp beast.

They do indeed. I remember being impressed the first time I played GTR. Then I noticed the annoying tyre model :P

Anyway, the problem with these sounds in games is sometimes they don't quite "fit" in the audioscape - a bit like how Forza's engine sounds are just that; no matter where the camera is, you still get that jarringly disorienting impression that your head is in the engine bay.

The other problem comes with sounds that obviously repeat (the detritus in the wheel arches, for example), or simply sound a bit crap (like the car bottoming out on the dirt). Both of these effects can be effortlessly recreated with filtered noise, which would (depending on the control signals) completely eradicate the repetitive feeling; additionally, it's much easier to shape the sounds to fit the rest of the sounds in the scene without losing fidelity.

In other words, yes it's great, but "take it to the next level," please :)

I hope that they include audio like this!!

Man his transmission is LOUD!!! FEEL THE THUNDER!!!!!!!!

More like a dentist drill. I'd need ear plugs after a minute of that....
Which would be realistic, as race drivers all wear ear plugs.
I've driven my car without a muffler before, and it hurts!

----

BTW been playing some Dirt 2 recently on my PC, and the EVO Lancer in Dirt 2 has superb sound. Probably the best sound I've ever heard done on that type of car in game! The other cars in the game are less good.
Just the right combination of intake, exhaust and transmission tone, and it sounds like it is under load. Even engine/transmission warble on gear changes. And some decent reverb when going through walled areas. Might be due to CM's Rapture sound engine. Just reving the engine at the start line sounds just right, and after playing Shift a lot as well, Dirt 2 is a cut above. Shift has all these glitches and weird tones creeping in.

Here is the fixed up audio version of Alba's Nascar vid. One thing we don't hear in this vid, which I heard at E3, is the throttle blipping sound just off idle, it sounds really nice and grunty!!

Found a good reference vid - doesn't sound so different now does it? :)
Just rev it higher and it's not too far off in general tone

It surprises me that with all these complaints, no one has suggested (or even volunteered) to ask Kaz exactly how they do engine sounds. I sure haven't heard that asked the last two gaming events so maybe someone could do that? Hell if anyone is willing to pay for my plane ticket and press pass, I'll do it.

Some real life drivebys at a Nascar test. When the GT5 version hits the upper revs it sounds somewhat similar. Still missing the transmission whine that was heard in the E3 demo.

Looks a bit like a video game :)

Having heard that, it sounds like the Nationwide COT(not the same as the Cup COT) is going back to the old sounds of the Old car. Also You still haven't answered me as to why you showed a video of a late model's sounds when we were reffering specifically to the engine sound in the COT.

Audible sounds from the Best Buy demo
Ford GT sounded good on this vid on the replay pass by. I think it's different from Prologue. Towards the end, you hear it go by a few times

They sound the same?

Wow, are you serious? You must not follow stock car racing like I do. Late models don't even have the same engine as the Cup cars because they are crate motors while the teams making their own. Anyhow, that video showing Late Models didn't really prove that the engine in the COTs have gearwhine.

As for the that video, does this mean now the demo is at other retailers too?

Nah, sounds the exact same to me. SLS sounds pretty good in the cockpit.

In summation:

The sound is acceptable, but nowhere as realistic as the visuals. PD, lets get it right for GT6 :)

(the Enzo sounds pretty dead-nuts on, but none of the others are quite as close)

None of those sound as close, from an offscreen capture, of a narrow frequency range camera mic capturing the sound from thin buzzy tv speakers in sometimes loud environments!

There is so much we arent hearing, because we cant, the methods used and media available arent of high enough quality to truly judge as if we had our HDMI\Optical sound @ home with our gear.

Just the bass alone, i mean driving anythnig more than 200kmh the road and wind noise make this intense rumble which translates into GARBADAGARGARGATRBBAB on these camera mics.:nervous:

Someone needs to go record a Best Buy demo lap while taking a DIRECT FEED from the PS3 for audio.

If they had the demo at my Best Buy, I'd do it.

Actually went there today.

458 sound it's the same of the F430 in Prologue... again...
Enzo sound, the same of GTPSP!?!?!?! Cam'on! This is lame...

There are sounds exactly like in Prologue. Plus new cars, so Enzo sounds exactly like F599 in Prologue, F458 exactly like good old F430, Viper is barely audible even like ACR type and SLS AMG sounds just rubbish, just another mid rev sample fastened to death, no V8 rumble at all.

PD aren't bunch of amateurs and it's more than obvious that they can't think this is the right way. Now after they showed us some very old builds with some parts old, some parts newer, I'm more and more convinced they are only playing with us. They have certainly whole new audio engine working in their studios and we will not taste it until the game is in the shelves.

Enzo sound is from GTpsp. :ouch: :sly:

For the 2nd point... hope so! :dunce:

I remember Kaz a while ago was quoted as saying that GT5 will sport the best sounds in the Genre but yet from what we have seen thus far, this claim has yet to materialise. Admitedly the effects particually in replays usings the samples are good, but whilst actually driving using any view many cars as we all agree sound poor and often not close to the real life car.

Surely Kaz can not be happy with the engine/exhaust notes of many cars, after all he is a petrol head and has driven many of the cars represented in his game as well as attending countless race events where he has a great opportunity to hear race cars at full chat. Considering this and comparing to what he has achieved in game must point out to him that he is still not close to offering an organic and realistic sound from many of the cars in the game.

I really do hope that you are right and that PD have a totally new sound engine that they are going to spring on us at the last min, but the closer we get to Nov with the sight of anything new then I worry more.

In June while on the way to Mugello MotoGP I was in a petrol station and a 458 Italia pulled in, a rich old guy with a 20 year old blonde supermodel by his side. I stood smoking drinking a coffee and did not leave until this guy got back in his car. I was hoping when he did leave that he would treat my ears to an orchestra of sound. He did not dissapoint, and redlined the 458 through the gears all the way down the slip road and back onto the motorway.

Yesterday I went to the centre of Bergamo (Italy) for coffee with my GF, there was some kind of Ferrari promotional event happening, Lots of Ferraris, many running, all I heard was glorious engine note after engine note. Now listening to that only yesterday, the 458 in the avove replay is a complete joke and a big dissapointment.

Even if GT5 does not ship with a brand new sound engine, then at least I hope that after release in the way of patches, PD can gives us the next gen sound that GT5 deserves.

How do you expect to hear V8 rumble through a tiny TV speaker and then through a tiny mic from a cheap digital camera? That combo makes it sound like a telephone!

SLS recorded on a cheap digital camera (I presume) not drasticly different from the vid IMO when in cockpit, considering we are comparing original source to no bass TV version
