Just to see for myself, I did a back to back comparison of GRID & dirt 2 to GT5p... It has reafirmed my belief that the sounds in GT5p are for the most part, bad. In grid, you can hear things inside cars such as the chassis squeaking under stress and things rattling and the loud gears... And the engine noise was great. You could tell what you were driving. In GT5p, the sounds for the cars was mostly "flat", with no real uniqueness to each car (with the exception of a few). the sounds of 2 cars especially, the corvette and the viper, were just plain WRONG!
Let's hope that these problems will be fixed for GT5...

Listen to the Super GT GT-R roar down the straight - so far from what I've heard only GT5 will get even close to that feel and effect!
Even the background drive by sends chills down my spine.

I'm talking about the flyby doppler effect, you can hear it that Game Spot Nurb vid when the camera is facing down the track and you see the cars fly past one at a time.
Off course you don't get the big reverb of the stadium at the Nurb with the open air and trees

You can also hear it at the end of the Super-GT Fuji vid when that red GTR shoots across the screen before the SC430 shows up

I'm confident they're in game. First they match very well and the same tyre sound can be heard in this video from the Tokyo Auto Salon. Which is a different sound from the Time Trial. The video appears to be Fuji and IS-F with that Data Logger ghost to race against

i have made a little sound compilation vid from GT5P
in my opinion they have made a good job, but i think the major problem is that the most TV´s with the standard sound system can´t bring the full sounds to us. you will need i high performance audio system

I m total agree with Driver321GO, the sound is very important for lot of ambiance into game.
I have a middle old model Yamaha sound systeme, and it's the day and the night with normal stéréo tv systeme or other.
And with one good subwoofer it's perfect. Actually i think to buy a TRITTON AX pro 5.1 headphone.

The sound is fantastic. Some of it seems a bit too good to be true, however. Some of the sections, showcasing the doppler effect, really sounded dubbed. Like it was layered over the in-game sound to spice up the vid.
If those tire sounds make it into the full game, I will at once be very surprised, and at the same time elated. By far some of the better sounding tire scrub I have heard in a video game. Again, this could just be dubbed to spice up the trailer.

Haha you beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing. Getting sick of that argument. If it sounds good, it can sound good on any system. I'm an amateur music producer, and I produce mostly trance. A very important part of producing is mastering. Mixing and mastering the track so it sounds good on ALL systems. It MUST sound good on earphones, car stereo, hi tech systems, everything. Otherwise a label will never sign it, or they might master it themselves for it to sound up to scratch. Bottom line is, you can tell what sounds good no matter what speakers its coming from. You shouldn't have to have a 5.1 setup. Its just an excuse for poor sound. You don't see any CD Albums saying "Please use on a 5.1 system for best results"...No that's just ridiculous.
PD need to step up. The sound sucks and that's it, there's no excuses, it's just bad (that goes for all GT games). We might be surprised when the full game is in our hands, well I hope so anyway. C'mon PD I know you can do it!

Driver321GO: As others have already said, sound system should have relatively low impact, and it should sound nice even on a SD TV as many still have those, myself included. Anyway, the bottom line is, if other games can manage, so can(MUST) mighty Gran Turismo. Period.

Yeah, except what normally happens is the dynamic range gets squeezed up so it sounds "good" on some little oik's iPod... Simply put, you can't have one mix that sounds its best on all hardware - you have to make compromises.
That's why PD have given us the option of setting the dynamic range, to suit speaker types. Except it doesn't really work as expected, other than normalising to the louder sounds and almost excluding the quieter sounds, such as the blow-off etc.
But, if you've got **** speakers, you've got **** speakers. It's not like it's the 60's, and we're having to make music sound good over the "wireless"...
Like I said, you don't play the game on an SD telly and complain about the rubbish sharpness...
I'm not saying this is the reason the cars don't sound as they "should" (that in itself is more subjective than I had imagined, following this thread) because you're not using a decent sound system, but it does help with the immersion and envelopment, which are a sign of the audio engine's potential!
PD are trying something different to everybody else, and if they can sort this artistic fidelity issue out, it'll be a chuffin' winner!

I can easily recognize well sounding game such as PGR4 from crappy youtube video and notebook speakers. This is bad excuse.

My "theory" of sound systems, as you put it, is simply a report of my experience with different hardware over the years.
Surround-sound does more than that. In GT3 it was possible to tell which tyre was squealing because you could hear it - just as you do in a real car. It also helps with envelopment, since stereo speakers sat in front of you only sound like they're in front of you! It's similar to the difference between listening to music from a stereo on one side of the room, or through headphones.
As for dynamics, check this out. I got to -60dB with my headphones and -48dB with only the front pair of speakers on my surround set-up (stupid road and fan noise!) and the speakers were probably marginally louder.

Yes, power aside, the point I am making is that I have a 1 year old, dedicated seperates system. Would I be taking liberties if were to make the wild assumption that my set up allows for GT5P to flaunt it's stuff? Playing through my system just makes it louder, thats it! Cars don't all of a sudden sound fantastic and just like the real thing. Anyway THD is more important as well as other things!! hehe

One car that does sound close the the real thing is a Clio V6 and tuned version. I was doing Youtube comparrisons and it is good either on the TV or Surround sound
