Hey there, I have been looking for a new HDMI cable, I just got a new TV and want the best picture I can get. Any suggestions on HDMI cables or are they all the same?
Buy one from monoprice.com. The cheapest cables work fine, just make sure you get one that is longer than you think you need.
LogiForceJust grab a decent shielded one and you're good. Not shielded because of signal loss as its digital, but so you won't kink it easily somehow by accident.
Else get a cable from brands like oehlbach, profigold or monstercable if your one of those audiophiles that think even gold on an optical cable makes a difference.
Buy a cheap HDMI 1.4 cable. The quality will be more than good enough. The expensive cables are a rip off.

Do not listen to this person for the reasons listed above. LOL
You get what you pay for in most instances. We're not saying you should buy Monster, but don't totally cheap out. There is a reason you can buy a 9 foot HDMI for 1.99. Its total utter garbage.
It's a well established fact: expensive HDMI cables don't make any difference. The big box retailers try to sell you things like overpriced cables with large mark-ups, in order to add to the (minimal) profit margins they make on most consumer electronic equipment.
You guys must put your HDMI cables through some abuse if you're breaking them. 99% of mine have been plugged in once and have been there since.
I actually was unsure how to post in this thread without pissing one person off or another. I've been in the AV game for awhile and I'll fill you in. Yes cables USED to matter. In analogue I could blind test cables and tell you which of mine from cheapest and midrange. In my high end and 1 pair of uber high end I could not tell. Video was much much easier to see the issues. This has been rectified by keeping the signal digital start to finish.
In early HDMI the cable did matter as there were no testing parameters or quality control methods in place. It did not however matter in a picture or audio quality stand point. If an HDMI cable performs poorly you will see the signal drop. Digital has error correction built in to help to maintain the connection between components. If the signal deviates to far (and can't be corrected), or the cable isn't capable of the speed you need then it should simply drop. So as long as you get a cable that has been tested to HDMI spec 1.3c or 1.4 (depending on your needs) you'll be fine.
As for cost, buying entry level cables from any name brand should be fine. Quality will be reflected in build quality not picture quality. I've never spent more than $1.25/foot to date and average less than $1.00/foot (I'm including cost of shipping). My friend used to work at Future Shop and used to tell me the markup. It's unreal how much money they make selling these cables. So please don't buy there unless you know someone who can give you the employee cost (I believe it's cost +10%).
