Hey there, I have been looking for a new HDMI cable, I just got a new TV and want the best picture I can get. Any suggestions on HDMI cables or are they all the same?

Buy one from monoprice.com. The cheapest cables work fine, just make sure you get one that is longer than you think you need.

Just grab a decent shielded one and you're good. Not shielded because of signal loss as its digital, but so you won't kink it easily somehow by accident.

Else get a cable from brands like oehlbach, profigold or monstercable if your one of those audiophiles that think even gold on an optical cable makes a difference.

Lol@ gold optical.

Not all cables are created equal, do not listen to people who say that. While I wouldn't suggest Monster cables, buy a good shielded pair with good quality heads. I've bought three different pairs of "budget" HDMI cables and they got detached at the head. Cheap crap.

I have had excellent luck with the amazon.com brand of cables, I believe they are calle "Amazon basics". A little more expensive than the budget crap but not much and really good quality.

Good point. Some budget cables are utter crap indeed. Bad soldering or too thin shielding on the cables.

Buy a cheap HDMI 1.4 cable. The quality will be more than good enough. The expensive cables are a rip off.

Do not listen to this person for the reasons listed above. LOL

You get what you pay for in most instances. We're not saying you should buy Monster, but don't totally cheap out. There is a reason you can buy a 9 foot HDMI for 1.99. Its total utter garbage.

Sorry Mayaman I have to agree with him.

A company that makes very cheap leads made the claim they were all the same with hdmi. He suppled £2 leads and they got a few others ranging up to £100 and tested them. There was zero difference. This story was run in the daily mail news paper if you search online you made find it.

So sure enough I tried it and bought some cheap leads of eBay and on my findings seems to be true. No difference on the £2 leads compared to my £60 lead.

What's to lose buy the £2 lead if your not happy your £2 down lol, if you buy a monsta and it's the same your £58 down.

Go to Futureshop and get a decent set like Rocketfish, avoid the overpriced Monster Cable.

A 1.99 HDMI 1.4 cable will generally be more than enough. OP, make sure to get a 1.4 one, as it will be of better standard of quality.

Yes, it may be "enough". But honestly, you're spending hundreds on a wheel, pedals, games, maybe even a ton on a rig, do you really want to save money on the one thing that gives you your visual experience? Especially since the cheaper the cables have a tendency to come apart or have terrible to no shielding leading to artifact and interference. I'm speaking from first hand experience. I say spend a little more to match the quality of your rig.

And yes, get 1.4 for sure.

FC, while the picture may seem the same alot of the time you won't see the difference in quality until you've lived with the cable for a while. Especially on a rig that sometimes has movement, other devices that cause interference etc. Again, its not exactly the entire ball of wax in those tests.

Its your money, spend it how you see fit.

It's a well established fact: expensive HDMI cables don't make any difference. The big box retailers try to sell you things like overpriced cables with large mark-ups, in order to add to the (minimal) profit margins they make on most consumer electronic equipment.

This is true to a point. I think everybody is missing the point of quality of construction. This isn't a myth, its a fact. Some budget cables fall apart, have terrible shielding. This is kind of along the lines of people bagging on boutique rigs because they aren't made of wood found down by the river.

Yes, don't buy Monster. I mean if you have the money who cares. But there is a difference in a lot of the really cheap HDMI cables in their construction. The picture might be the same for a while, maybe not.

But what ever, like I said buy what you want. I'm going from first hand experience of the cheap cables I've bought and what others I know have bought. Monoprice is a pretty safe bet.

You guys must put your HDMI cables through some abuse if you're breaking them. 99% of mine have been plugged in once and have been there since.

When I buy cables and I have four systems in my house, I avoid cheap cables and overpriced Monster cables. Even if I used the high priced Monster cables I doubt if anyone could tell the difference from a decent mid price HDMI cable.

Mine as well, never failed me yet.

I actually was unsure how to post in this thread without pissing one person off or another. I've been in the AV game for awhile and I'll fill you in. Yes cables USED to matter. In analogue I could blind test cables and tell you which of mine from cheapest and midrange. In my high end and 1 pair of uber high end I could not tell. Video was much much easier to see the issues. This has been rectified by keeping the signal digital start to finish.

In early HDMI the cable did matter as there were no testing parameters or quality control methods in place. It did not however matter in a picture or audio quality stand point. If an HDMI cable performs poorly you will see the signal drop. Digital has error correction built in to help to maintain the connection between components. If the signal deviates to far (and can't be corrected), or the cable isn't capable of the speed you need then it should simply drop. So as long as you get a cable that has been tested to HDMI spec 1.3c or 1.4 (depending on your needs) you'll be fine.

As for cost, buying entry level cables from any name brand should be fine. Quality will be reflected in build quality not picture quality. I've never spent more than $1.25/foot to date and average less than $1.00/foot (I'm including cost of shipping). My friend used to work at Future Shop and used to tell me the markup. It's unreal how much money they make selling these cables. So please don't buy there unless you know someone who can give you the employee cost (I believe it's cost +10%).

Yes, the build quality is my biggest complaint with the cheap cables. I've literally had three heads come off of the 1.99 cables I bought on amazon. So far been happy with the amazon basics and mono price cables I've bought.

When it comes to somewhat advanced cables like HDMI, the golden rule in my experience is the following:

Don't buy the most expensive, but don't buy the cheapest either.

Yeah... In Canada I spend around 10 bucks for 10 foot cables. I have 11 HDMI devices, 4 of which move forward and back on a platform, and have had no problems yet. I returned a cable once that was 3 dollars in a bin, but it was for smell. It had that burned resistor smell... SO GROSS and it really lingers.

HDMI is numerical. Either it works or it doesn't. The quality of your cable can't do any difference on the image.

Cheap cables are fine, only problem like some said is the construction quality that might sometimes be deficient with extremely cheap cables.

Great Answer, Thank you.:)👍
