Scrolling way back up toward the top:

If Halo is supposed to be about the story, with multiplayer being some kind of bonus, they failed horribly at their goal. The Halo storyline is pathetic.

As far as Killzone is concerned ... I'll rent it. Might be fun.

I played it for some time yesterday and my first impressions are good. The graphics are very good, kind of a mix of MoH, Socom and ICO. The guns and their´s animations are awesome, the controls play fine (although I didn´t like the Sniper mode that much), and the framerate seems good despite of what some people have said about it. The online mode is pretty crowded, there´s a lot of game modes and pratically no lag.

ded? I have been online since the few days of the release. There were at least 500 people playing the dsay it came out, i would imagine there'd be 1000's now.

youre not geek enough to enjoy it I guess.

Much more compelling characters, a very deep, fleshed out universe and cool subplots all over. Its just more subtle than a lot of people are used to. Most people don't even realise there is a deep story to halo, they just zip through the game without noticing it. Okay, so Halo 2 isnt subtle, but I find the story arc fascinating in Halo. So much so that I read all 3 books (the 2nd was a turd), and listened to all the hidden sound files on ilovebees.com.

Play some Marathon games (mac) and you'll see that Bungie are experts at their craft. I think alot of the indiference and resentment for halo stems from the fact that it's hyped way too damned much! After hearing about how great and wonderful it is, many people jump into it trying to find anything wrong with it and tear it apart, instead of being pleasantly surprised by it's subtleties. Hype kills.

now, on topic:

I was expecting killzone to kick ass and take names. Yeesh, I was way off. Characters are cool enough until they open their mouths. Stupid, stupid, voice-overs, cheesy lines (every one just swears all the time without reason), the story seems cool at a glance, but doesnt go anywhere. Basically, the game just falls apart everywhere except in the art department. Their artists are really talented individuals, from animation to texture artists to conceptual stuff; the basics are there to build upon. Its just that the engineering behind the game engine is just a mess. I haven't seen this many graphical and A.I. glitches in a game for a long time. It's also just painful to play through on single player; the dynamics and level design are just too clunky. Especially the terrible aiming and hit detection. The A.I. is awful, make no mistakes. They're puzzling because they can sometimes appear smart, but then you figure out that the non-stupid thing they just did was actually just more scripting. Weapon designs are totally kick ass though, as well as the orchestral score.

IMO, I'll stick with halo until Rare releases PDzero (if they ever do!), or if Half life 2 comes out on xbox 2 or something. Or perhaps if Killzone 2 isnt such a mangled corpse of a shooter.

score: 5/10

better ps2 shooters: MOH frontline, Red faction 1 and 2, timesplitters 2.

better console shooters: Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, both for N64.

edit: I just played half life 2.

forget any other shooters. forget halo 2. I am saving for a gaming computer.

If someone has Halo/Halo 2 there's probably not much point in having Killzone as well. If you only have a PS2 there certainly isn't a deluge of current FPS's to go for. What interests me is how Killzone stands up to other PS2 FPS games like MOH, Red Faction 2, Warhammer 40,000: Firewarrior, Mace Griffin etc. My fave would probably be Red Faction 2 but it's rather dated now. Well, I'll see what Killzone is like once it is out here in the UK this Friday.

Killzone is fun game. but playing and comparing wont get you anywhjere. it makes it hard to enjoy a game when all your doing is comparing, Heck i wasn't even comparing Halo2 2 Halo as i was playing. Its far better than RedFaction 2. for one its longer and harder. And RF2 has no Ai at all.

No, I don't compare this game to anything unless it's suitably similar and on the same platform.

Judging the game on it's own merits, I just thought it plays like ass. I'd take one of the "dated" ps2 shooters over it anyday (that firewarrior game last year was more entertaining, to be honest). But if you're a virgin to FPS games, I can see you getting cold feet about the genre because this one just doesn't cut it.

I would compare this one to MOH: frontline, since it is very similar in design. But MOH is ultimately a better game because it is simply more fun to play.

Comparing to MoH: Frontline and Red Faction 2 I think Killzone owns both. It has better graphics, better weapons, better playabillity, better AI(altough is not that good at times), you can customize the controller the way you want it to, the plot is good, it has a great online mode and a beautiful and very interactive background. I got Killzone along with Ratchet 3 and Ace Combat 5 this week, and it´s by far the one I´m playing the most (and I´m not even a FPS fan). The game has some gliches and the framerate gets a little to low at times, but overall it´s a good game, the best Shooter on PS2 IMO.

8.5 out of 10.

well, glad some people are enjoying it. I certainly didn't.

IMO, R&C3 and AC5 are head and shoulders above this game.

But you are right about the weapons; they are some of the coolest I've ever seen.

I would also only compare games which are the same genre and on the same platform. I've played pretty much every FPS on the PS2 and today I got Killzone.

First impressions.
I was pleased to find I could map my controller anyway I pleased and change aiming speed too. Not enough FPS titles let you do that.
Also I was happy to find I could play NTSC (60hz I presume) and widescreen. The options screens are all clear and easy to use.

Okay, how does the game look? Better than any other PS2 FPS I've played. Very atmospheric. Nicely depicts a bombed out, war-torn enviroment. Decent draw distance and smoke effects and some lighting effects. Quite nicely designed too. Only criticism is it's all a bit grey, but that's no big deal.

Controls are good, almost up there with Timesplitters 2 for speed and accuracy. Not experianced any shudder or jerkiness yet (I'm at the Park with the blossom). Yet to really suffer from any slow-down in the game either. Changing weapons is okay, reminiscent of Firewarrior. The weapons do look good and have a nice sound to them. The re-load animations are well done. Grenade throwing is a bit hit-and-miss, but I'm getting better at it.

Sound is also very good, with nice ricohets etc. Not sure I like the voices. They can be too repetative at times. Nice dramtic score too.

Now then, gameplay. I'd say pretty good. Reminds me more of MoH than any other PS2 FPS. However, I have noticed flaws in the AI such as enemies standing oblivious to you and missing you by miles when standing just a few feet away. But it does'nt bother me. If I want really good AI I'll play online. Objectives can be vague and it is easy to get disorientated. However the game seems to take a pretty linear approach to directions etc. Also most enemies tend to appear from a set pattern, though a few have caught me out. They do keep to cover quite often whch can make for a nice battle at times. Generally though I like the gameplay. It's paced about right for me (i.e fairly slow and balanced with the occasional fire-fight).

Is the game as average as a lot of reviews have said? I don't think so, though I do see why they may say that. In many respects Killzone isn't that much different to other FPS games. The AI and voices are the only real bad points I can see (there is a slight issue with the modelling of bodies - the change between low-res models and hi-res is quite noticable on bodies lying on the ground) and arguably the gameplay is fairly standard. But it is done well enough to make it stand out from the crowd of other FPS titles on the PS2.

I have enjoyed myself playing Killzone (or Killz-one as my brother calls it - "You Killz-one and I Killz-one...") today and if a game can do that then it's a perfectly good game and I'm sure it'll keep me going for sometime to come. :)

Why are you trying to burry the game? Just let us who like the game enjoy it and try to get people to "try" it. Great. you dont like it but that doesnt mean you have to try your best at not recomending it. TXR3 got slammed in reviews but that was no where near a bad game. The review gave the graphics a 6 and the sound a 7. That alone is a joke.

By all means, enjoy it.

I wouldn't recommend it, but that matters zero to you, so don't get upset.

I'm just voicing an opinion, opinions aren't right or wrong. It is my opinion that there are better PS2 shooters out there.

The fact that they gave the graphics and sound those scores is actually quite plausible.

The sound isn't bad, in fact, it has an awesome score, but it isn't consistent. Having terrible voice overs will do that. Thus the "good, but not great" score of 7.

Graphics? Well, it all depends if you haven't played any other recent shooters, or if you just judge it by screens (the game looks great in still shots), but they ain't great by a long shot. Having an enemy blur into view in front of you as the frame stutters and the textures inexplicably morph into a big soup of wierdness does not make good graphics. The artwork, as I've said before, is what makes the game good-looking. The camera filters are cool, the character designs are mostly bad-ass, the weapons are nuts, the first person animations are sick, and the backdrops are gorgeous (if you squint). A good score for graphics requires the graphics engine to work properly though, so the game is SOL.

I agree with most of what the reviews on the web say about Killzone, I think I´m just more forgiving about this gliches. I would not take three points out of sound just because the voice acting is poor, actually I just don´t like Rico´s lines.

About the reload times being too long, that´s just bull****. I loved that feature, it makes the game more realistic IMO. You have to learn when to reload, it makes the game more difficult, so that´s good.

And the graphics are really good, but is too much for the PS2 to handle I guess. There are flaws, but is nothing that ruins the experience. I showed the game to a friend of mine. He´s an Xbox fanboy and a graphics whore. I expected him to flame the game, specially for being called as the Halo killer (he´s a Halo freak), but he actually enjoyed it. He played the first two missions and said the game is good, although it has some gliches.

Yeah the reloading was one of the best things in the game, tbh. The animations were stunning. I'm actually dissapointed in halo 2 that they streamlined them for "gameplay purposes". No more slapping down the bolt on the battle rifle when you reload. :grumpy:

Kinigitt? Have you played the consloe versions of Call of Duty. A guy i work with whos not even in to fps's says the online play is fun and its a good game, however, he only did the first mssion and its been online since. I kinda feel the same way about Killzone, most of my joy comes from the online play. making it a worthy buy with that option, the one reason i did not buy Halo2, i cant play it online.

Hate to be a buzz-kill again, but Call of Duty: FH isn't so hot. I rented it this past weekend, and though I found it more enjoyable to play than Killzone, it's a far cry from the original. Overly simplified and ultimately a more shallow experience, IMO. Too bad, I loved CoD.

And Labounti, I highly recommend Halo 2 on live (yeah, yeah, you can ignore me because of my avatar, but it really is phenomenal online. I was bolted into my chair for 6 hours yesterday, playing rumble pit matches), or if that doesn't float your boat, Ghost recon 2 (the ps2 version should be out soon) is great fun. Also, Rainbow six 3: black arrow should be checked out, though I haven't heard of a PS2 version yet.

In fact, the best online PS2 shooter by far is SOCOM 2. Anyone looking for a solid experience, with good voice chat and team play should check it out.

edit: My avatar at the time of the post was Master Chief.

I have to back kinigitt up on the Halo 2. It is so far the best FPS I have played online ever. Period. There are way more than enough things to keep you busy online than any other game I have ever seen. If you dont like the available rooms then make your own or join your friends. Or the servers will put you in a compatible room of your choice. I only posted this because you seem as interrested in online play as we are. :scared:
I try sooo hard to find a good FPS for PS2 and its just not easy. The last good ones I played were Medal of Honor which was great online. Socom 2 was pretty good.
I will soon have my review of Killzone. The first thing im doing is going online with it.

Yes Halo 2 must be awesome online. I used to play a lot of Halo through the Xlink on my friend´s XBox. Too bad he sold the console, I hope he buys another one soon.

And Socom 2 is also great to play online, but Killzone is good to, I´ve been playing a lot lately.

Ratchet 3 seems to be good to online, but there´s not much people playing it. It lags a little on my connection so I´m haven´t been playing much, but I´m upgrading my ADSL this week hoping that this will fix the problem.

I used to play Socom 2 quite a bit but sometimes it took a long time to get into a room. Some of the gun and frag controls were a little strage but easy to master. It was even a good game in the single player mode. For some reason I ended up playing month after month on Medal of Honor online with my girlfriend we have a router so we sit side by side and play on 2 seperate PS2. We would make a room and play for hours and had soo much fun!!
Now for another post on Halo 2.
I have a video on "my car videos" page that shows me flying around shooting people and raming into people trying to kill them. It gives a great feel of how the game play is and how huge the levels are.

I never played Socom2. I can image how fun Halo2 must be, i played allot of Halo at an adult gaming lounge with 8-16 ppl, 8 was more than enough as the levels were uninspiring. Must of the guys I played all said they'd never play single player again. Multiplayer is the big seller, live was the hottest ticket to get halo2.

I've seen reviews of CoD and they are all average like Killzone, but my friend only enjoys it cuz he playes online.

It´s the same thing with Socom 2. I never played the single player mode, always online. It´s the online mode that makes the game so good. But I still think that Halo´s single player must be better than Socom´s.

Oh yeah Halo 2 single player is way better than Socom 2 single player. No comparison at all.
