whilst i dont think there was much wrong with the old format, we will see alot more hot laps, but i dont think 90 seconds is long enough at the end of q3.it should be more like 2 minutes to give the last 2 enough time to get round the circuit.

i just have got a warning for saying Q3 instead of Qualifying 3 so be warned !

I would imagine it was actually for your complete lack of capital letters.

I was thinking that it was crazy to warn me for abbreviating qualification, but it wasn't made very clear in my warning, what is was for exactly. Anyway i have had my telling off and will be good in English class from now on ! Sorry.

Moving on...

I was under the impression the teams have to stay out permanently for the whole qualy session until they are eliminated... that didn't happen.

I also thought every lap time they do is reset with every elimination so they have to fight to get out of the drop zone a fresh every 90 seconds... that didn't happen either.

These should be the changes applied IMO is they keep the format... but that looks unlikely as apparently Bernie hated it.

What a :censored:ing car crash Aus qualifying was. I just couldn't make heads or tails of what was happening. The Indycar quali system is way better than this shambles.

It still wouldn't work, drivers still wouldn't have the time to get out and complete a full lap. If they constantly got reset drivers would be getting eliminated with no time on the board at all.

Then they should make the elimination countdown longer, long enough for anyone at any point on the circuit to reasonably be able to complete a full lap. So when all the times are reset at elimination everyone has 1 lap to get back on the board.

I believe the latest news coming in is that it is set to be scrapped for Round 2 onwards. That qualifying session was a fiasco.

Hasn't been decided, they're having a meeting tomorrow morning. I can't see them doing it again exactly that way though. They'll either tweak it or revert back and have a better think about a new system I'd guess.

It has to go. I was very welcome to see them trying change, and happy to try it out for at least 1 race. But that was rubbish. Session ended after first laps really, so sessions were front loaded. We tried it and it failed, nice try but try harder next time. Grid isn't even mixed up...

I honestly think it should just be reverted, maybe with an additional clause saying that in Q3 all drivers must be out at the end or something. Just a simple adjustment. Qualifying wasn't amazing but it worked. So the FIA broke it. xD

What I would like to see is everyone who makes it to Q3 is given a set of ultrasofts to use in that session only, that way there's no sense in saving tires for the race. Logistically it wouldn't work though, since there isn't enough turnaround time between sessions for all the teams to get a set of tires mounted on wheels.

The tires they use in Q2 are what they have to start the race on. They get free choice of tire in Q3.

That is exactly what already happens. The problem is still that the tyres are only good for one hot lap.

This new format is like taking an old, gross band aid you found on the street and putting it on your uninjured, perfectly fine left leg.
Meanwhile, the bullet wound (the current F1 financial system, the poor race quality, etc) on your right arm is about to bleed out.

Well, that was ridiculous. We end up watching the time count down instead of drivers doing hot laps. :ouch: I feel sorry for the fans that paid to watch that. More drivers spent more time in the garage than on the track. Sad.

Am I the only one who thought that Q1 and Q2 were great? Seeing the teams royally **** up when they tried to work out how long 3 minutes was... epic.

I hear that Sky tried to explain that "the cars didn't have time to do a lap", I completely disagree, it was obvious when they needed to start their runs and several teams completely misjudged it. If it was up to me we'd keep the system for Q1 and Q2 and go back to a balls-to-the-wall flat-out Q3.

Well, if anything, it'll eliminate sessions where nothing happens for 80% of the time and everyone waits to the end to go out on track.

This was nearly perfect for Q3. Sadly it was EMPTY at the end. lol. Was watching the replay of NBC Sports, and Hobbs called it in Q2 that something would happen, and it did.

Force India don't want to go back to the 2015 system of qualifying - probably because they know that they've got a pretty good chance of qualifying ninth and/or tenth on a regular basis, but since the 2016 system only sees eight drivers go through to Q3, so if they qualify ninth and/or tenth, they get a free choice of tyres at the start; conversely, under the 2015 system, they're forced to start on their best Q2 tyres.

Yes and no. Yes because it gives a chance of a mixed grid, no because ultimately it still means less running and less actual on track entertainment.

Also for a lot of cars they really didn't have the time, given that you had to finish the lap before it reached zero. If you just set a lap good enough for two or three spots above the current drop position you still won't have time to come back in, change tyres, refuel, go back out and do both an out lap and flying lap before the drop position moved along and your time is up.

This would be especially the case at longer tracks.
