Opening/Closing the roof in cabrio/convertible cars?

I believe the premium Daihatsu cars (OFC and Copen) are considered to be convertibles, but I'm not 100% sure if they drive "topless". Not the most desirable cars, but convertibles all the same.

Not the hood, bro :p

Where I'm from in Scotland, we call it a hood. So sorry for the misunderstanding. :P

The hood is called the bonnet and the trunk is called a boot..and the roof is called the hood.

That thread is asking what cars are open top, so that he/she can find out what have working interiors. And none of them are road cars with real working retractable tops in real life..which I suspect this OP was really asking.

Oh I see.

I really wish they would give us the top down option back. It existed in GT4 for the Honda S2000 to be driving top down. Looking through the threads here I don't see a big complaint about it, maybe they are not hearing this need correctly, this thread has not reached their list of changes because of all the other screams and we are not screaming loud enough??? but I think it's essential to get top down back in GT, convertibles are unique for that reason! we want to experience driving them top down. Is this not the real driving simulator? If it is, I think convertiable driving needs to be restored.

PD,
We would like it if you give us a new update with this convertible feature back. I know it's possible, you've done it before, and you implement it when the tops go down during picture mode, why not allow us to drive it top down on the tracks?

I tried the "search" feature for any posts about this topic, to no useful avail, so here's my question:

When, where, how, and in which cars can I drive with the top down. I'm of course not referring to standard cars like the Prowler, but to Premiums for which they went to all the trouble modeling the interior, then when you get on the track... you might as well have picked a coupe. I have heard that the Ferrari California gives you a choice, maybe, and the weird VW off-roaders without tops let you drive as intended, but what else? It seems like every time I take a nice new droptop out, even for a time trail, I get clostrophobic.

What are they exact "rules" or conditions that we know of in which you can drop the top on a car? Thanks.

I'm not really sure about all of them.
I do know that the roof goes up on the California when you add a rear wing. Its constantly down otherwise with no option to change it.

S2000 '06 has the roof up when you take it out although the dealership shows it with the roof down :grumpy:

In other words S2000 '06 < S2000 '03 because it has less spoilers, the roof contanty stays up and also, the S2000 '03 has CE28s available.

It's a shame that most convertibles in GT5 have their top up.

An option to choose before entering a race would be good if it isn't possible to change it on the track.

Funny thing is that I don't like how the California looks with the top down.

The California with the top down looks exactly like a top up car. The frame of the front windshield matches the edge of the screen when in the default view!

They've indeed changed that since Prologue where the edge of the window frame was visible in cockpit view (probably so that they didn't have to change/remodel it when the roof's up or down), looking back and sideways is different I assume (haven't put a rear spoiler on a California) with the roof up and perhaps the sound too.

In GT4 the open top cars only had their roofs up when racing (more cars on track), in free practice they were down, don't know why they've made the decision to change it for most Premium convertibles, probably technical reasons or simply convenience.

I really wish PD could implement a button for this. I really love my SL 55 AMG with the top down, but I can't drive it like that.

I would suspect that there are no more open tops because you can roll the cars over now. The Roadster TC gets around this because it has a roll cage.

That's when anti-roll bars fitted on most modern convertibles come in. And what about the Ferrari California? It doesn't have a roll cage or anything supporting the car when it rolls over. I was thinking the roof on most convertibles are always up due to the weather change.

That still leaves the California (and both WW2 VW's) example though, or can't it be rolled over with the top down?

I don't think it is a priority to have the option to put the top down on cars, since this is a Racing simulator, not a cruising one... :D

However, given that you can, in theory, "cruise" around in the 'ring (which is, to my knowledge, a public or semi-public road) and several other city courses, not to mention the existence of photomode, I'd say it would be a nice addition.

In the meantime, go play TDU2! :D

No, I rolled over the Tank Car '03 by accident (don't ask me how I did it) and it doesn't have a roof :nervous: .

I pretty sure that in GT4 you could also drive with the top down in an open track day(with several other cars on track, just not racing). Not sure about family cup(?) races, the ones that you could access from the practice mode and adjust difficulty for. Regular races were all top-up for sure.

I recently raced somebody multiple laps of the Nordschleife in full monsoon conditions who was driving a California with no wing. That must have been a miserable drive!

it would be nice to put the top down while driving but theres not that many buttons for it. If you want the top down drive the california or play tdu2. not trying to argue

There's plenty of buttons since you can re-map them. If you use a wheel you also end up with lots of redundant buttons on the controller. It's much more likely due to "not worth the effort to make work correctly" reasons. A shame really, but it also probably really isn't worth the effort, at least to make it look correct doing it on the fly. And then you'd have people complaining about how fake it is to be able to put the top up or down at 180mph. And there's the question of removable tops versus retractable tops...

We have 3 button options for headlights alone
flash
high beam toggle
flash & toggle high beam

We also have a wiper button that is pointless because they force themselves on and off anyway.

I assume the main issue would be the animation of the top going up and down but that wouldn't (and shouldn't) stop them from making it a menu option.

Saying if you want a feature go somewhere else is just rude. 👎

👍👍👍👍👍

But it is for your own good as obviously convertibles have a higher drag coefficient hindering performance.
Some of us couldn't care less. Unless the tops were forced down, there's no reason to complain. Some of us play GT because of the accessibility of it, meaning the seriousness of participating in online racing leagues isn't as big of a factor in playing GT as the casual side is. Unlike trying to fit custom wheels to +800 cars, there aren't that many cars to fit this option to make it as time consuming as that. The animation of the tops going up/down during a free run/time trial is something that can be considered as pointless. Having the option to choose before entering a track is very possible to implement as it seems.
