Quick question, wondering just exactly what kind of choices you get for your loadout in online co-op and single player. Are you completely locked in your loadout on SP, and the same in co-op? Or do you pick roles? Any choices at all in each ?

You pick roles in multiplayer, its a first come first served basis so be quick to pick the character u want (medic, machine gunner etc) and in single player you start out with what ur given but u can always change for other guns from all the resupply crates everywhere

Picked up my copy this morning on the way to work, so will have to suffer a full day before I can play.

Will be giving the single player a go tonight to get to grips with things before letting loose (and getting shot a lot I'm sure) on-line.

Scaff

Picked my own copy up from asda at midnight, £29! and then went and really got into it. Started the campaighn on expert level and then spent the next 4 hours completing the first mission.........Yep 4 hours, one mission, which is actualy a yraining/familiarisation mission on the small island to the south LOL. My mission time was actualy 1:47 but I had to restart from the "last checkpoint" 3 times. Please take the time to go for the secondry missions on the first level, it really is a good way of learning the game.starts off at sunset and by the time you've completed it it'll be pitch black. I won't spoil it too much but theres a heli transport, a good number of vehicles, an enemy APC and a serious rocket launcher to use.
Quick aiming tip, if you have the enemy martsman rile who's scope has the chevron for a crosshair, you'll see 4 dots below the chevron, 400m shots are bang on the first dot down.
Quick team mate tip, you don't need to move as a 4 man squad, as an example taking a defended position I setup the suport gunner on a ridge and told him to put down supressing fire, while I stayed at the side of him snipeing , the other 2 guys I sent to assault the position. When they took it, I then got them to defend it whilst I then advanced to it with the suport gunner. Works a treat especialy if you have open ground to go through to get to the target.
Theres alot of comands that you can issue to your team, learn them and use them, this isn't a run and gun game, use your team or you'll die alot. Also I first played this game on normal skill level, theres far more fun and a challenge to be had playing it on expert, I'll leave hardcore for co-op.

Update

Just started the second mission, I prety much walked it comparativley speaking on normal mode, now I'm on expert really really up against it

360 version.
Rented and played this last night for about 3 hours. Holy crap the difficulty is no joke at all. Very VERY tactical and realistic. Imagine RSV2 on realistic and then tripple the difficulty without any regenerating health. If you walk out at all you will die instantly. I jumped right into the 4 player co-op without any training and it is brutal difficult even with full communication. I probably should have played throught the single player first to get the hang of the controls. Maybe that would have helped. Also if you die at all in the co-op you have to start the entire mission all over again from the beginning. It is also NOT drop in drop out co-op. If someone leaves the game ends.

This game is actually too tactical and too slow for me. I will try it a few more times over the weekend but at this point its not my type of game.

No differences, except fot the 360 XMB party system.

Dragontastic may just regret going on hardcore.......no hud whatsoever, not even to show your shot or if your AI has been shot, not the best way of learning a very hard game LOL

I'm doing alright, learning the ropes ok. I'm on the second mission now, which yes I have died on thanks to a chopper and some odd friendly AI. Back on track now as I'm about to complete the initial flanking move.

Well I just netted my copy, now diving in on Hardcore on my first play... wish me luck.

LoL... Good luck ;) I got my copy yesterday but no time to play it yet... I was busy and today I got a company dinner to go to... so I think I'll get my first taste tomorrow :) judging from what ive read here I will need to practice first so I'll be diving into the single player mode first for a while 👍

This game looks terrible! It bugs me that games that is not made for kids and causual gamers is bad quality, looks like a 5 year old game. The gamplay sound very realistic, I have missed a game like this on ps3, but those graphics and animations :scared:

I went ahead and failed, got a little lost and didn't get to an anti-air in time. However, I took out a 7-8 man squad single handedly within 50 metres after losing the team (friendly AI is kinda sucky) in single player. I was stood right by the anti-air when I failed, very annoying but it was good fun being on my own showing those PLA who's boss. I actually did better on my own then with the AI team .

Use the team more. don't expect them to be crack sas snipers, but use what there good at, supresive fire, defending an area, ambushes, scouting ahead, repairing and fetching vehicles. all this they do very well. Basicly give them a task to do and they do it, just having them following you can be a waste.

Right anyway, just ventured online and found a few tips for everyone, first only go on Ranked games, this way everyone is serious about the game your in, secondly co-op is absaloutly fantastic, just make sure you have a mic to get the best from it!
First Ranked elimination match on the chokepoint map, went as sniper team leader....22 kills 1 death top player score and our team won, 45-33 Sniper scope ss a beast of many aim points LOL noteable point of the match, running out of rounds, jumping on the humve's gun and just pumeling a woden shack 100 meters away with the 50 cal where an enemy was hiding.......smoke clears, chalk up another one ;)

I'm kinda disappointed with this. Visuals are OK, good enough, but the biggest downer is that I can't customise controls. I really can't see how Codemasters ever thought L2 & R2 would be the best option.

I also tried online...Unranked Annihilation...just to see how thing work and I didn't have a clue what was going on. Nothing is clear at all and, for some reason, I was the team-leader but could I control my team's A.I. with commands? Nope.

I dunno...maybe I wished it was a little more robust or something but I'm not overly enjoying this at the moment.

Go sort everyting out in single player before jumping online, theres alot of comands and until your familiar with all of them you'll strugle.
The servers tonight were packed tighter than a can of sardines, understandabley to be honest, but eventualy managed to get on and host a co-op match with 2 of my mates. one of whome hadn't really taken much time getting use to the game. He kept us amused though with his first rolling the heli on the beach as I stood well back giving him instructions, then running headlong into an ambush while we all stayed well back and engaged the enemy from a safe distance...yep he got sloted prety quickly trying the rambo aproach, then he reversed the lany with the whole team in it of a cliff, backwards, bit of a wild ride but only the AI player died so we didn't shoot him LOL
All in all after the trouble of getting on the servers it was a fantastic night, no lag, no players droping out. no glitches just great tactical play for two and a half hours.
I'd set it on normal mode so everyone could get used to it and the enemy put up a good fight, just don't let the new boy drive, or for that matter let him do flight training in his own time LOL ended up with a 2km tab after he totaled the heli on the beach, I did get to have a quick fly first however (to show him how it was done) setting auto hover still allows you to move but keeps the hight constant for you, very handy oh and the lights are good as well, gave the guys a flood lit view while they blew the SAM on the west coast first mission.

I've played the first 2 levels on the experienced setting, and I'm loving it. I was shooting at 2 guys near a building for probably 2 minutes and just could not hit them. I started using the numbers besides the crosshairs and aiming high and dropped them both. I couldn't believe they actually take distance into account when making long range shots. This is just the game I have been waiting for. I really haven't figured the commands out that well yet, but I've been winning the battles by staying far away, and behind cover.

Really great game, but big time COD fans will hate it worse then any game they have ever played. I think on the second level I went 15 minutes without firing a shot.

Hereward, if you are on and see me log in I would love to try some online games with you. I think this game is going to take the place of socom. Hopefully if they make another socom, they will give us the option to have a squad of AI players online as this game does. I loved the old socoms single player missions, and always wanted to have it online with me controlling a few AI teammates.

Yeah no plroblem bevo, it is very remernisant of the old SOCOM games, but even more tactical. The second mission is a pain for me as the time limit realy restricts my style of play, but saying that it dose pile the preasure on LOL I tend to stand off as well, get the suport gunner to stay back as well and but supresing fire down, then send in the rifleman with the medic as backup to mop up then defend the position while I move into it with the suport gunner. works well taking simple positions, just got to watch the AI flanking you.
Aparently theres a baret light sniper rifle in the amo crates situated in the ruins on the clife top just south of the heli in the first mission, think I'll have to go try that out today! I'll be hitting the first mission in co-op today on hardcore mode as well.so if your up for it, could take a couple of hours to do though.
Not liking the friends list on the game, you have to physicaly enter your friends on it rather than it automaticaly taking them from your PSN friends list. minor niggle but one that realy shouldn't be there.
And finaly, the official OFP2 forum.....hate filled americans......all I'm saying LOL Going to try the pre order codes today as well, might be some good co-op maps there, I'm holding off going into the main game at the moment until everyone is used to the game, same really with the other online modes, but the ranked games I've played were very good, as people get to grips with the game though this will only get better. Oh yeah and the helicopters in the game, namley the transport one you get on level 1, it takes a good bit of time to fly it well, and a good knowledge of the map to fly a safe route to your destination. Other things I've noticed is they have modeled "ground effect" into the physics model so landing areas which are suitable are again key. beaches, roads and flat forest clearings are ideal, but of course your limited regarding cover when you disembark.

I stayed up till 4 A.M. last night playing this. The only reason I stopped was because my 3 year old boy woke up yelling for me. I'm still having trouble using my teammates very well. I think I got to the 5th level, and it seemed like the game is fairly easy. I tried to start over on hardcore, but the lack of any compass just kills me. I have no sense of direction at all on video games. I wish they would leave just the compass for hardcore. They don't need to show the enemies on it or anything, just let me know which direction I'm pointing.
I played one online deathmatch also and ended up with 0 kills and 9 deaths. I never seen one enemy. I really do love the idea of this game, I just think that the single player missions could of used a little better design. They're so open that it's to easy to just go around the enemy and then attack the objectives hard and quick. The only level I have had any trouble at all with so far was the second one. That ended up being because the first 4 or 5 times I tried it, the other squad of AI teammates that are suppose to be flanking for you wasn't doing there job. They just kept staying at there waiting point and not moving at all or engaging the enemy. The last time I played it they actually moved in and helped me.

The online seemed like it could be really fun once I get use to it a little more. It's just so hard for me to figure which way is north. My teamates would call out a target and I would have to bring up the map and try to figure out which way SW was.

Are there only 2 online maps to play, one deathmatch map, and one defend map?
I really do like this game though, but I bet there are alot of people that really hate it. It is a very, very slow and methodical game. It is though, by far the most realistic feeling shooter I have ever played on a console. If they support this game, and come out with a patch to fix the bugs, and give us some more maps, this game could last awhile, and COD might not even get played this time. After this game and socom, the new COD is going to seem really stupid.

The sniper rifle in the first mission is really nice for the second one. It has a night vision scope on it, that turns your enemies white. It makes that map much easier when you can see who you're shooting at. That one box though on the first map is the only one I have found yet. I've looked all over and haen't been able to find any others.

Hitting the command button in Hardcore gives you some HUD information, compass, team-mate locations, locations of waypoints you've set for the team (like Assault location you set, or movement).

I went as far as the airfield mission, which I completed by a whisker. I took out the heli whilst defending then the APCs rolled in, I moved to take a shot with my anti-tank and got downed, whilst I panicked and tried to scramble my medic to me in time, I didn't hear I had opened the chance for an airstrike so had to sit tight for a good few minutes being pounded by APCs until a friendly chopper came and started taking shots. It still took an age to destroy the APCs but job done nonetheless.

I'm much, MUCH better at the game now, rarely dying and rarely losing team-mates. I'm generally going for long range attacks from high ground, picking off a few targets then falling back, moving around the objective from a distance in a circular type motion, then coming in and taking some more shots. Sometimes objectives call for speed, but luckily my aim is pretty solid and I make use of the engage command for priority targets for the team (they make short work of vehicles generally).

A quick tip for the secure the beachhead mission. Move fast to take out the AT gunners, it makes the rest of the mission much easier (and generally more doable) if you save the majority of the friendly vehicles and has a knock on effect on some other objectives by making a chopper available at a much better period for you.

I'm really enjoying Flashpoint so far, the fighting is intense when you know you can die so easily. Vehicles put fear in you, defending is hectic and desperate at times against the vast PLA forces. Great game, very pleased.

Great game and well hard. Have been trying for past 1 hour to play online with no luck and nearly had a pad meets the brick wall.

Found the baret light.........huge scope, huge noise, little recoil, usualy one hit one kill, no scrub that, allways one hit one kill! I even blew a guys leg clean off from 300 yrds, seriously, no leg from the knee down! it was a poor shot but funny, oh and chest shots send the enemy flying LOL You'll find it in the ruins I mentioned earlier, comes with 90 rounds so you can have a proper go. 400yrds was fairly easy from prone once you got the tragectory right but the scope is very powerful magnification with lots of clear recticule aim points. I recon if I can find a 1km target I could probubley nail them with this!

My adventures on Hardcore continue, was doing co-op from the start last night with a good friend of mine (we plan to go through the game together with mostly us 2, him on support, me on team leader). Naturally we were on Hardcore, we didn't even need headsets (he doesn't have a brilliant one) as we just designated me as being in control of tactics so I set him his own orders and such. I then went on to single player to do another mission of my own. Minor spoilers so I'll tag it.

The mission (can't recall the name) is one where you have to search for a downed helicopter crew. However you get a series of other objectives which lead you and aid you along the way. It begins, after insertion via chopper, with a friendly squad nearby which you can help, so I did, and then they lead you in the right direction for alot of the journey, taking you to the location of the anti-air which (probably) took down your helicopter buddies. However on your way to that AA I encountered a very nasty gunship which put some heavy fire on me whilst the AI fireteam moving down a hill closed in, luckily we hid from the gunship just in time for it to go away and leave us be, leaving myself and the team to mop up the remaining 5 or 6 troops no problem.

Advancing up to the AA vehicles, I find the site already clear (those fireteams which came down at me must've been the AA crew I'm thinking) and from this high vantage point you can see the possible crash site. Down the hill I go with some minor resistance from a small group of soldiers who almost finish off the friendly unit which had landed itself in trouble at the beginning. No matter, I knew there deaths wasn't my fault they were using stupid tactics at times and got themselves shot, I'd like to have saved more then 1 but I couldn't. Advancing to the crash site you find no signs of the crew and then a friendly calls in a possible location of a small town with gunfire. So I opted to go around the back towards the south side of the village (the north was infested with enemies) went in the backdoor of the objective building, found the crew and then put simply legged it. It was a long hike to the EVAC but I got there, even with transport choppers dropping off more PLA on my tail I just kept running. Fun mission, intense finish.

I still haven't gotten very good at using the commands. I can''t figure out how to link commands together, and I'm having trouble splitting my squad up and giving individual commands. I really wish they would have made the first level a tutorial, that showed all of the ways you could control your team. It's still fun though, I just wish I knew how to take advantage of all the squad commands better. If anyone knows of a site that tells how to play the game it would really help me out.

Another mission down for me, 20 minutes from insertion to EVAC on essentially a sabotage mission against a larger force. Stealth mission though, I only killed 7 enemies.

But is the map not just one big massive map? IE the whole map is available at any point throughout the game?

I have never thought of buying a strategy guide before, so I really never new what to expect out of them. With operation flashpoints lack of a tutorial level, and vague instructions now I know what a strategy guide is, a 20$ instruction booklet. The lack of telling me how to link commands together and get the most out of my squad is driving me crazy. I went and looked at what was in the strategy guide, and that is what it is. The missing instructions and tutorial.

I emailed codemasters and they suggested I buy the strategy guide to learn how to use the commands, because they can't give advice on game strategies. I'm very upset about this. I will hunt, and hunt until I find someone who has posted this guide. This is definitely my last codemasters game. I love the game and all, but that's crazy that you have to buy a 20$ strategy guide to explain how to use all of the commands.

If anyone can find a guide explaining the commands more thoroughly and PM me a link, I would love you longtime.

Quick update on my progress, I just completed another couple of missions putting me on mission 9 next (and likely tomorrow) and that means 3 to go in the campaign. Progress is smoothing out as I learn more and more about the best tactics, who says putting it on Hardcore for my first playthrough was diving into the deep end to far?

-------------------------------------------------------
Tips
My general tips that I've learnt, some obvious, some less.

- High ground is advisable, it makes target spotting and engaging much easier, that said, look for the high ground with good cover natural or man made, as being caught in the open is never nice. At extreme ranges though, you can often get away with minimal cover.

- Flanking, extremely, is always a good option. Shooting an enemy in the back is much easier then shooting one who's already looking right at you. Use of suppressive fire or splitting the team in 2 helps make smaller flanking moves successful and safer. However for major engagements, sticking together and simply running right around the side to the best vantage point is useful. E.G. When approaching a built up area, village, fuel depot etc. from afar look for the best point of high ground with plenty of cover and good sightlines. Use the 'move fast' order to flank better, issueing a move fast at each location you want them to travel through, it allows you to control exactly how far around the team goes rather then leaving it to AI sense but means you have to babysit them through the move.

- Breaking contact is always a good idea when things are going wrong. Issueing the fall back order is not always the best way though as AI team members may do so very slowly and not deploy any smoke grenades. Setting a 'move fast' order is usually more successful, and to really speed things up, put some cover fire down on the most lethal target, then issue a cease fire order to make the team sprint straight to the point you set. They (usually) will keep down and crawl if under heavy fire, so don't worry to much about them getting shot in the back. Once contact is broken, relocate quickly to a better location, or if you're confident enough, heal up and go back in.

- When attacking heavily guarded positions, don't be afraid to soak up all the fire by providing covering fire, whilst using the map to send your team around a longer route (using move fast and return fire/cease fire to keep things quick) and giving them the engage or assault order.

- GOOD TIP: In hardcore mode, you have no HUD however, you can still access your compass by pressing R1 down, and also can identify friend from foe by holding R1 at an enemy. Red circle and assault/engage orders pop up for enemies, blue and follow target orders pop up for friendlies. Similarly, if you issue an order such as a move, assault order, holding R1 lets you see you're waypoint on your screen and even better, setting the engage order means you can see your target without actually needing to make eye contact. The engage icon will stay above them even if they move unlike other orders, meaning you can track them and kill them much easier. Particularly useful in woodland areas.

- Avoid unneccessary contact where possible. It saves ammo, and possibly health. Don't be afraid to take the longest route possible around to be sure you won't have to engage, but remember to issue a 'fire on my lead' or 'hold fire' order to avoid your team-mates ruining things.

- Don't forget your spread and formation. Tight is good for keeping hidden, combat is of course best when things are hot. Formation wise, Line offers the best cover for directly ahead of you, but makes you easy to flank. Wedge is my prefered combat formation, with a combat spread, as it gives you a better coverage to the sides, but still not perfect. Better to break contact or fall back to keep an enemy from surrounding or flanking you if you can't engage them directly.

- Don't forget to pick up weapons and ammo from enemys and downed friendlies alike ( and crates). Worried about running out of ammof or a good weapon? Pick up a PLA weapon and use it for easier engagements, saving your primary for when you need it most. Not worried about your ammo? Well carrying some sort of anti-tank weapon won't go a miss either.

- Speaking of ammo, use single shot for all bar the closest of engagements. Simple reasoning, accuracy, ammo conservation and it doesn't take many shots to down or kill an enemy.

- Eyes in the sky, you never EVER want to be caught off-guard by a chopper. Gunships can easily wipe out your entire squad in mere seconds if given the chance. If you're in the open, hitting the floor will usually keep you safe provided you're in grass or at night.

- On a similar note, if you've got time to spare, avoid open ground. If you're breaking contact run for the closest source of cover and, go through it to another spot if need be. Even when not engaged, you don't want to be caught in the open. You're only defence is to hit the floor should this occur, and then you are in trouble. You can't shoot and move whilst prone, and you move very slowly.

- Never let your guard down, check your surrounding area as much as you can, using binoculars or scopes for maximum effectiveness.

- Use your map, alot, it's useful for issueing flanking orders, and in Hardcore, you can set your team to go to the location you want to go to, then follow them so you don't get lost so easily.

- When dealing with rescue situations, chances are you gain control of those units you're rescuing. If this particular unit is under heavy fire when you find them, head around to the quietest side via a long route (they're usually quite competent to survive themselves if they're in covered locations, unlike defending allies on a certain mission who regularly die). Don't be afraid to grab the unit in question, and order them to follow you and simply run out of there, using the hold fire order to get the ball rolling. Chances are the PLA will have reinforcements to come after you. Transport helicopters aren't much of a threat, they'll usually only drop troops off and if you keep moving, they won't have chance to engage. Gunships still need avoiding, and ground vehicles are best destroyed if they're chasing. You obviously can't outrun them BUT if there's plenty of trees around, the AI drivers won't pass through nicely. Use the trees as cover to take the vehicle out, or use them to break contact completely if you have the chance (remember, if you don't have to engage heavily, don't).

- Finally (for now) check your kills, in Hardcore you don't get a marker to tell you you've made a kill. Use your map to check the target is down. There's nothing worse then defeating an entire platoon to find the enemy you thought you killed is now right behind you and kills you.

-------------------------------------------------------
Commands
As regards commands, most of them are relatively common sense-ish. Such as combat spread being the most open (to avoid being blown up in one shot). But here's the basics. Once you hold R1 you have a few options:

- Right on the D-pad accesses the next sub menu - Offence (up), Defence (down), Movement (right), Follow (left).

-- Offence usually consists of Flanking (left and right) will send the team round the left or right of the waypoint you set at a slow pace, engaging targets dependant on your RoE (explained later). Assault (up) straight the point at the designated target, firing along the way to cover each other usually one fires, one moves and then they swap, Suppress/Halt (down) Suppress is useful to distract or pin the enemy down and Halt is self explantory.

-- Defence consists of Fall back (left), Halt (right), Defend (down), Follow (Up). The only one worth mentioning is Fall back, the team is SUPPOSED to throw smoke when they do this, but I find this unreliable. Still gets the job done though.

-- Movement consists of Move Fast (up) sprinting normally unless they're under fire, Move (right), Follow (left), Exit (down)

- Up on the D-pad after pressing R1 usually means some kind of direct movement. When looking at an enemy, this movement is assault, normally this is just standard move (they won't sprint like on move fast, they'll keep at a slowish pace).

- Down is follow, unless looking at an enemy it then turns to the useful Engage order.

- Left leads to the various formations and Rules of Engagement sub menus

-- Formation, Line (right) is a straight line across, so your team-mates are by your sides. Wedge (up) creates a pyramid shape with your team-mates. Vee (down) creates, you guessed it, a V shape around you. Finally Column (left) creates a straight line behind you.

-- RoE is quite simple, Fire at will (up) means engage whatever you see, Fire on my lead (right) the team will wait until you fire first, then the self explantory Hold fire (down) and return fire (left).

-- Spread, Combat (up) is most open, Normal (right) is half way, Tight (left) is closest. The closer you are, the less chance of being spotted normally, but the more chance of an explosion wiping multiple friendlies out.

The team won't move directly if they're firing at someone, hold fire will make them move as quick as they feel safe up to the speed of the order. E.g. Move fast whilst on fire at will, will mean the team will likely keep firing and move quite slowly. Set it to hold fire and they'll turn around and leg it. They're not stupid though, they might only crawl even on hold fire if they don't feel it's safe to get up
