I would get a normal slim, it will be cheaper and better airflow.

GT5 may kill the new PS3-SS

Not true i found this out the hard way.

I can play GT5 ALL DAY with no problem but 20 mins of BF3 and 10 of MW3 and my 80gb fat shuts it self off .

Since GT5 saw amazing improvements when using an SSD, I figure this would be the best place to ask.

Anyone know if the SATA connection has been upgraded in the new PS3 Super Slims? I think all the PS3s up til now have been running at about SATA1 speeds. Would be great if SSDs could be utilized even better.

I doubt it. They didn't update anything else about it on a hardware level, and this seems much more like a cost cutting upgrade rather than one that improves the system like the Slim was.

That's a good question,

I can't be sure but I would say that its likely it does do SATA3 because of the 12GB SSD model which probably uses a modern SSD and why would they not use a current connection system to match it. I doubt the motherboards would be different for this model over the HDD ones so they are all likely to be SATA3.

After all they did do a slight upgrade to the HDMI port going from the fat to slim so I guess its possible. I guess we won't know till someone does some benchmarking.

If the SS (super slim) came with 4 USB's and add BC (backwards compatibility) I would be tempted to own 3 models.
The other 2 would not be used anymore, except for playing away from home.
I want to drive on some of those GT4 tracks that PD have omitted.
As well as play some other PS2 games I still have.
Unfortunately the launch PS3 had no games for me and I did not buy one as I/we were very into GT4 LAN style and of course, the WRS.
GT5 Prologue was not out.

Imagine the old games Sony would sell without lifting a finger, unless of course, they are out of PS2 games.
It was mentioned they still sell the PS2 console.
I believe 4 million units last year.
Scrape the PS2 production, have the SS BC, sell it slighty cheaper than the PS3 slim, now Sony has an idea for us gamers.
It was mentioned this redesign is for Sony, not us,
I guess that would be Sony shareholders.
Maybe Microsoft or Google buying Sony would sound good to shareholders too.

Hey but Sony knows what their doing.
Look at their (financials).
On the NYSE Sony shares are about US$11 now and 3.5 years ago shares were over US$55.
Yeah, Sony knows what it's doing.
Hopefully restructuring helps, it cost them enough, US$143,000,000.
Drop in a bucket, I know,
What could you/we/I do with that kind of money?

Hopefully for Sony the US$645,000,000 cost for Olympus shares earns a profit in the future.
Maybe Sony could bundle an endoscope with the SS so I can get a cost break on my rotator cuff I ruined coutersteering with the DFGT wheel.

And as others, I think it's ugly and a waste of Sony resources.
I'm old enough to like nostalgia but not in technology.
At least improve the system somehow..........?

My systems are fine, I only bought the 2nd because the blue-ray went on the 1st and I wasn't waiting to get it fixed.
Having a 2nd one is/was convenient for gaming away from home every Sunday, sometimes bringing both.
And yes, I did bring the 32" TV with me.

It's always game fault, never ps3. If the game is badly written then you will have problems. Especially on ps3. GT5 works just great. Not like many other games that was also design to run on x360.

500GB is definitely getting the AC3 bundle for US.

For me, this bundle made it any easy decision even though I still have my original FAT 60GB and 4th Gen 120GB Slim.

After all, I was already pre-ordering AC3 and I was planning on getting a new DS3 controller. So for just an additional $185 I can get a new PS3. Not only that, but it comes with a 500GB laptop drive worth about $80 just on its own, so really I'm getting another first rate 3D Blu-ray player with loads of video streaming services, and happens to also play games, video conferencing, etc all for just about $100.

Which in our house will always be convenient as my kids are growing up and enjoy using the PS3 with their friends, my wife uses the PS3 a lot for video streaming and occasionally for Home... and frankly its nice not having to move a PS3 from one room to another depending on who is using it.

This will be my third PS3. My launch fat 60GB still works after it got a life saving reflow over two years ago following a case of YLOD, but the disc drive stopped working over a year ago, so it no longer can be used to play disc games or play DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I bought my second PS3 over two years ago, the 4th Gen (2nd Gen Slim) 120GB Slim (2101A) with the 40nm GPU and its still going strong.

So I'll be welcoming the new addition, and overall 5th gen PS3 into our home soon. Great deal. Woot!

Yeah, Sony knows what it's doing.

Sony has a lot of problems, but their financial woes have nothing to do with their PlayStation division which continues to be highly profitable.... so in that regard they do appear to "know what they are doing"... but unfortunately for Sony, their PlayStation division is but a small fraction of their corporate revenue stream. It's their other divisions that are bleeding money.

I think some people in the gaming community forget Sony is MUCH bigger than just their PlayStation brand. In fact just a few years ago before the financial markets collapsed, Sony's Finance division accounted for nearly 90% of their profits. Compared to their Finance division, their PlayStation division was just a branding tool.

Would I recommend investing in Sony? Absolutely not. However, if they ever decided to spin-off their Electronic Gaming division as a separate company, then I would definitely be investing in that. In the mean time, Apple continues to shine in my own personal portfolio, and I don't see Sony ever turning things around in their other divisions in the same way that Steve Jobs did when Apple was selling for less than $17 a share and now sells for over $600 a share making it by a wide margin, the highest valued company in the world, with a market capital of over $600 billion dollars.

I don't have use for these Apple products so fill me in here.
Do they put a new wrapper on an old product and sell them as new?

If so, then maybe Sony is using Apple's approach to consumers seeing that Apple is doing OK.
Along with Microsoft, maybe Apple could buy Sony and we could get a new iPS3box, at least it would be something new.
That's my main point here.

From April, about Sony:
"I thought turning around the PlayStation business was going to be the toughest challenge of my career, but I guess not,” Hirai told the Wall Street Journal . “It’s one issue after another. I feel like ‘Holy s—, now what?’”
June 25, 2012, Kazuo Hirai retired as chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, however, he remains on the board of directors.

I see figures of only 12% sales ((2009)13% 2007)) for Financial as compared to 13% Gaming, with a whopping 66% Electronics (audio, video and TV) for Sony.
And yes, companies have to be diversified, I have no problem with that.
One of Sony's biggest complaints seems to be poor foreign currency exchange rates.
Maybe like the financial services, Sony sales should stay in Japan.

About the Sony gaming division, read this.

Why aren't they concentrating all their resources on the PS4? I'm pretty sure we don't need a 3rd incarnation of the PS3.

I completely agree lol. I still have my old fat 80gb. Even if it breaks, I'm not buying a new console until ps4.

250GB Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle Unboxing From Destructoid

Perhaps a price drop (less storage model) within a few weeks as the Wii U is set to release, time will tell what both Sony & MS will do, if anything at all.

This PS3 now looks like a temporary solution to get costs down a little and make it fresh compared to the last PS3 model which was also had some small changes regarding hardware to get cost down. I think there is probably going to be a small revision to this (Related to RSX die shrink) before potentially a big change if possible in the near future and a 4th design which should be more compact.

There will still be potential for a 5th design change, but that will be only happen potentially a few years into the PS4 cycle and depends on if the Cell can be die shrinked further with any benefit.

I'm not so sure. The smaller the chip gets, the more heat it generates. MS designed their slim with cooling in mind, so it is roughly 20% smaller than the fat model.

That said, Sony knew how to design their models. The first PS3s ran on a 90nm CPU, then a 65nm CPU, followed later still by a 45nm CPU found on the old slim. The end result of all of this is that as the CPU and other internal chips got smaller, there was suddenly room in the internals to adopt more cooling, or adopt less power consuming circuits on the motherboard.

Ultimately, with the release of the Super Slim, Sony adopted for the latter.

The whole idea for the die shrink is so it uses less power and generates less heat so cheaper and smaller cooling system can be used.

The new slim is just a redesign both on hardware and cosmetic layout to make it cheaper to produce and get rid of the extra space that is not needed anymore. Not much has changed really to reduce power by much. There is still room for big changes and maybe Sony is working on that for probably release sometime next year if it is possible.

If you would have told me that they are going to release a new SKU of the Super Slim, then I might believe you, but as things stand now, I find it highly illogical that Sony would redesign the PS3 for a fourth time when the third generation PS3 is going to be released in just days.

They already released the 3rd design and is out to buy. I did mention they might do a revision for this, maybe already worked upon, and then a possible change for another design which should be more compact. Sony are going to great lengths for very small changes, so I think if there is a chance to reduce cost by a lot, I think it is logical to think they will go for that option.

I would say around 2013/2014, they might be able to release a 4th design change, and if there is still a market for the PS3 like there is in places for PS2, maybe a 5th change around 2018 time, about a year or two before or after.

The CECH-3000 and CECH-4000 models are basically models just trying to save costs to improve profit margins a bit, there has not been much change in the main chips since the CECH-2100 and CECH-2500 series. Only the smaller chips have had changes to and removal of leds and cheaper cooling and redesign has helped get power and weight down little by little.

Glad they went back to the fatties form factor style, its just a pity it looks like its made out of the cheapest black plastic known to man! Should have made it all gloss finish.

We've just bought one of the new 12GB SSD PS3's.

Ps312gb.jpg

Just doing updates now. A report to follow.:)

I can get my dead 60gb (500 actually) fat PS3 fixed for $100 professionally with a 90 day warranty. Or I'm considering an PS3 SS. Is it worth the extra cost upgrading? Can I drop my 509gb in the SS without losing the data? Does the fact that it runs cooler actually affect my electric bill? Is the SS quieter? One thing I like about the Slim is that it has a dedicated DTS Master Audio and DD HD chip. I assume the SS has this chipset? Have they added any new chips to improve performance?

It will format any HDD you put in so you need to back your data up.

12GB? And you're playing GT5 on it? Wouldn't that fill the HDD?

Is it worth upgrading to a more efficient system, or spend the $100 and get my space heater that also plays games fixed? :p

Personally, I'd go ahead and buy the new PS3. They original PS3 has a much higher failure rate than the later ones do and you'll get a warranty with your new system. Longer than 90 days, at least.

Yeah I have a 250 GB Super slim, and honestly it is pretty cool. It's a nice system, and it feels faster for certain things (like messaging, games, loading apps, etc.) I've had it for nearly 2 months now and it has worked like a charm.
