Ok, this subject has been beaten to death, but I need a definitive answer.

What exactly do I need to play the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 4 on a US PS2. It's a version 9 PS2, thanks in advance for the help ^-^

Swap Magic 3.2 (or 3.3, if you have the PSTwo).
The game disc (demo or final).

A Flip-top case is nicer than the Slide-tool, but it adds to the cost.

It's too late to ask Santa for it all.

Cheers,

MasterGT

Seeing how GT4 is DVD based, I would assume you need the Swap Magic DVD version. I have version 2.0, which works fine. Swap Magic 3.2 (CD based games) works for me too though. Good luck!

I also have the swap magic dvd and cd version with the slide card. Although the Japanese version is NTSCJ, will it still work with a NTSC-only compatible TV? I've tried to play imported games (although they were PAL) and they were unplayable.

If you dont mind opening your PS2 or voiding the warranty then a Mod chip is the way to go. But if you have no clue how to properly install a mod chip, or you don't want to void your warranty then using Swapmagic is the way to go.

If you have HD loader do you just copy the disc to the harddrive? Does that allow import games to be played on the USA PS2?

thanks,
mk

GT4 will not work with swap magic right out of the box, due to the fact that GT4 is on a dual layer disc. In the thread titled 'which GT4 should I buy?' Sven pointed this out and I did some searching on the net and found it to be true. The only way to get it to work is by splitting the game onto 2 separate discs and then you'll need a patch as well to get it to work. Bummer eh?

I canceled my order and signed up for the racing pack with the Japanese PS2.

Xenosaga, which is a DVD-9 game, don't work with Swap Magic 3.3 ... so we don't know for GT4.

Anyway, the best solution to play import game is to use HD Advance with a HDD (connected on the network adapter).
No need to modify the PS2, it works with all the models and loading times are quicker.

I agree on that one, but it's very likely that we won't be able to copy GT4 directly. It will need to be patched because of the dual layer structure, and it's not proven that this will work. But there are some ways to do it, so the probability is high that it actually will work.

No, the best solution is to wait untill GT4 is released in the US. You've waited more than 1 year, what's 1 more month??? No need for swap discs, mod chips etc...

Yeah, if it would only be one more month. But that's not the question here, is it?

Well, fact is, we don't know how long it'll be. And it may very well be a good question in the end. A person could dump a lot of money into the import and modifications required to play it, and depending on how soon we in the U.S. get it, these people may start questioning whether or not it was worth it. I've dumped enough money into the game already in the form of a DFP.. I don't plan to dump more money into it just to play the game a few weeks early.

Sure it's questionable if it's worth to pay a lot of money, not only for importing the game, but also for the necessary equipment to play it. And there's not even English language then.
On the other hand - if you already have the necessary equipment, you will be absolutely pi**ed when you didn't order it and you'll see all the videos, screenshots and general information coming in when the game arrives in few days.

I can understand the people that didn't order it, but I can also understand the ones that did. And who knows when the US and the European version will arrive? If they come early we're lucky, but there could be more delays for whatever reason. The advantage that we have: bugs that will be found in the Asian versions can still be fixed in ours. 👍

If swapmagic doesn't work then it looks like I'll be importing a Japnese console then, over here in sunny England it would cost me about £75 just to get my current PS2 chipped. For that price i'd might as well just import a new console for about £120 at least I'm getting something to show for my money. :dopey:

For a DVD-9 game, you have to build an iso file which works with HD Advance, by merging the two layers in only one. It's a very simple manipulation and many tutorials are available.

What are the guarantees that, if you bring a Japanese PS2 into another region, GT4 will play on-line in that different region? I haven't seen anything yet to indicate that this will positivley work. Once all regional on-line versions are available, then we will know.

I have the flip-top and swap disc with the new slimline. YES, it works with DVD+R's. I watch burned movies all day long! Waiting for the import GT4 to get here and will be playing it soon!

Wykid, are you sure the flip-top works with dvd9 format games?

That isn't what he said. He was refering to burned copies of movies on DVD+R media. Not Dual layered DVD9s.

I'm curious myself if GT4 works with the swap discs, though everything I have read says it won't

I know but he said "Waiting for the import GT4 to get here and will be playing it soon!". So he either knows or is assuming that itll work with dvd9 games.. I contacted the company and asked if it works with dual layed dvd9 disks.. I'll let you know when i get the email.

I have a version 2 Swap Magic/Slide tool which works fine with my US MGS3 on my 30003R UK PS2. I had read that MGS3 was DVD9 also, but I can not be sure.
You will need the version 3 to work on the new slim PSTwo, however. Plus a gadget to fool the lid mechanism (tweasers can be used but it is very tricky).

HDloader is virtually out of the question in the UK. Cheaper to get a Japanese or Asia PS2. Plus the PSTwo can not have a HDD plugged in.

I really want the US GT4 out by the end of Jan but I don't think that is happening.
