Swap discs, mod chip?

man...the DVD9 and Swap Magic 3 seems to be the question of the week. I have searched extensively and can not find anything definitive. I think I have searched every corner of the Internet. I have found as many people and sites that say it will - that say it won't.

Guess we won't know until someone posts the conslusive evidence here.

Come on people - anyone have the setup to try it out yet and tell us for sure?

I placed an order of GT4 Japanese for my U.S console today. Despite the fact that it will/will not work with the Swap disk, I know my chance are 50/50. work or won't work we'll see. Yes Knowing the fact that it's out in Taiwan, I have to pay the extra bling bling to get it asap. Hope it work.

Well I now know for sure that GT4 and any dual layered disk won't work with Swapmagic. They just emailed me back and this is the response I got:

Dear Sir/Madam,

We apologize that the Swap Magic Disc does not work with the dual-layered DVD discs.
Best Regards,

Wow...swapmagic3.com actually got back to you. That alone is shocking.

Good to know, glad I just bought a NTSC-J PS2....

Thats what I was saying too, they emailed me back very very quick. I emailed them lastnight.

I'm just going to mod my ps2 instead of buying a Japan PS2. Much cheaper for my walet that way.

Ha! I emailed them over a week ago and still nothing. Glad they answered someone.

Well, fact is, we don't know how long it'll be. And it may very well be a good question in the end. A person could dump a lot of money into the import and modifications required to play it, and depending on how soon we in the U.S. get it, these people may start questioning whether or not it was worth it. I've dumped enough money into the game already in the form of a DFP.. I don't plan to dump more money into it just to play the game a few weeks early.

👍 now u're talking! This is the same reason for me :)

The swapdisk is what I have used for a long time. $18 at modchipkits.com To make it easier to use you can get the flip top cover but it isnt necessary.
$18 and you will be playing burnt and imported games. I have seen 5 year old kids use these. Thats how easy the are to put in.

Hmm...how about Swapmagic 2.0? I have the V4 ps2 and been using swapmagic 2.0 but haven't ran any dual layered games discs on it...so is it only swap magic 3.0 that doesn't work w/ dual layer or are all swap magic discs affected? time to cancel my order if it is... :(

Xenosaga, which is a DVD-9 game, don't work with Swap Magic 3.3 ... so we don't know for GT4.

Anyway, the best solution to play import game is to use HD Advance with a HDD (connected on the network adapter).
No need to modify the PS2, it works with all the models and loading times are quicker.

No need to modify the ps2? Don't you need Slide Tool or Flip Top Cover for converting backups/imports?

or maybe you are talking about installing the import game trought LAN with a PC dvd for example...

ewitspaul, you're in the same boat as me. My copy should arrive by the end of the week...looks like I'm going w/ the HD loader option. :\ Was planning on getting it sometime...

I also received e-mail conformation that every version of Swap Magic does NOT support DVD9 and/or Dual-Layered DVDs. I just said "f it" and bought a NTSC-J version of the new slim PS2. I'm tired of sliding that damn card thru the machine everytime I load up a game, and it makes my original PS2 look like crap since it's missing the front piece on the CD tray.

Well my Messiah 2 chip (In pal PS2) is able to load the NTSC version of Xenosaga which is a DVD-9, so i'm hoping that will work.

I hope you know, or have a friend that knows how to solder, VERY well. how much does the JPN ps2 go for now days....lemme see. if its less than $160, that's probably cheaper than the HDLoader stuff

is it really hard to install modchip myself? I never did soldering before but I am going to try it, hope it is not hard and hope it works...I better not screw my ps2 haha

Take a look at the instructions. They should give you a good idea of how involved they are. It's pretty difficult if you're not good at soldering. Also it requires that you have a soldering iron, preferably the pen type, with some flux. If you have NO idea what I'm talking about, I suggest you get it profesionally installed or just cancel the order. Professional installation can be pricey though.

Also is there any confirmation that HDLoader/HDAdvance is compatible with GT4? Dual layer isn't an issue since I can just do PC loading, but there is a chance that it is incompatible...

Well, I ordered a Magic V Plus from one place on December 20th, but have not received any confirmation on it at all, so I went somewhere else and ordered a Matrix Infinity, plus HDLoader. They are supposed to be here tomorrow.

I probably should have went with the DMS4 Pro, but we'll see. If I don't like the Matrix, I'll get one.
