Wait, you actually think that Button would commit to a multi-year deal despite retiring? That's even more ridiculous than suggesting that he would agree to a single season.
Where did Button say he was retiring again? I've not read that report. All I've seen was 'sabbatical'. Which means 'take a break', last time I checked.

That's the best you've got? A gut feeling and no news stories where Button says that he has retired?

Button has NOT retired. The end. That does not mean he will get a drive in F1 this year or next, but it is fact. What, incidentally, is different about hiring Bottas for one year ahead of hiring who Mercedes actually want in the car if they had been given enough notice from Rosberg?

Then why did he treat Abu Dhabi as his final race?
Ever heard of psychology? He treated it as if if was his last F1 race because in all probability it is. That is not "I am retiring."

Okay, but I am not really sure what point you are trying to make, given the course of the recent conversation - namely, the probability of Mercedes hiring Button.

I don't think that's fair to Bottas. After all, Williams got an engine subsidy for taking him. His star may have fallen after Ferrari chose to retain Räikkönen, but he has enough experience in a front-running car to merit a seat at Mercedes.

The POINT I'm making is that he has NOT retired and you keep saying he has.

Bottas certainly deserves a chance with a top team, but I very much doubt he would be mercedes first choice given adequate notice from Rosberg. It just shows a lack of ambition from Williams letting their best driver go like that. They can get all the free/cheaper engines they want, but it won'tt do them any good if the nut behind the wheel isn't good enough.

No, I am saying that he is speaking and behaving as if he is retired, and that I see no evidence to suggest that there is any realism to one person's suggestion that he could go to Mercedes.

Button is my favourite driver, but I cannot see him getting the Merc seat at all, let alone coming back to F1.

However;
No, I am saying that he is speaking and behaving as if he is retired.
This isn't really saying that you think he has spoken and behaved as if he is retiring, you're just flat out saying he's retired;
he has retired?
that he's retired

despite retiring?

As @Tired Tyres says, it's a psychology thing that he said it is his final race, as it may as well be the truth. Whilst I'm no Jenson Button, with regards to my own personal experience in karting, I told myself and people around me that this upcoming club meet would be my last in a go kart as the financial strain was too much. It didn't prove to be true, but from then on I treated all my races as "the last one" as it may very well hae been the last time I raced. If anything it brought the best out in me.

I'm sure we'll never see Button in F1 again, but until he definitively says he's retired, then there will always be speculation.

So Massa is gonna come out of retirement? Honestly at this point, after all the heartfelt goodbyes he should not return. I know sentiment does not an F1 team make, otherwise Button would be in the Merc seat or something as has been suggested, but I'd like to see someone new in a competitive seat than watch Massa be average for another year.

It's believed that his retirement had more to do with Williams hiring Stroll than Massa losing interest. He would have stayed if he could, but Williams chose Bottas and Stroll. But nobody saw Rosberg's retirement coming, and with Mercedes eyeing off Bottas to fill the vacant seat, a way to stay in the sport opened up.

Williams are pretty conservative when it comes to driver changes. They're probably second only to Ferrari in that regard. They like continuity when they can get it. Taking on Lance Stroll is a big step for them; taking two new drivers is probably too much of a risk for them.

I never said that's exactly what they were going to do. I said I think it's more probable.

Having two fast drivers that have proven to work well together and know their place 'makes no sense'? What does make sense to you?

He gets along with Bottas just as well as Button...from your responses and the little agreement I see, this is nothing more than conjecture where others actually are using what has been said and past history seen as their argument. I still see Bottas and PascalBottas as the top choices. Button is a romanticized dream by those who can't accept the turn of the millennium drivers now being old and ready to leave F1 forever.

Should I prepare the swan song for when Kimi and Fernando are shown the door in a season or two?

Chill out guys.

I doubt they will go for Button but Ex Driver is right; he would finish second every week and everyone would be happy. But Mercedes will not employ two,British drivers, no doubt about that.

I still hope they go for Alonso. I bet he will have tried to move there. And against Hamilton that would be just delicious.

So would Bottas, he's not right, the only thing I see Button having over Bottas is driving in the rain which considering how weak it was in Nico...wouldn't really soil the chances of mercedes getting first in the constructor again so long as the car is fast. Also I don't see Button getting second every GP at the least because he's always been a very picky driver when it comes to set up, especially when the car is a top performer compared to a mid field runner.

That makes things interesting for Manor, because both their seats are wide open now. They've looked stronger than ever, and they're believed to be talking with new backers, so I think the seats are pretty lucrative at the moment. If they could get talented young blood - like Giovinazzi and Gasly - they could really establish a reputation as the spiritual successor to Minardi.

That said, Gutiérrez and Haryanto are said to be talking with them ...

It seems Gutierrez's career would survive nuclear war. It has evolved to become immune to his mediocrity.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Manor, though. Just as long as they steadily keep getting better, it's all fine by me.

There has come to be a Mexican seat - or seats - in today's F1. No shortage of Mexican talent and currently no shortage of Mexican money. Gutierrez will simply be replaced by a better Mexican if he doesn't work out. Perez has certainly turned out to have many sterling qualities and great employability within F1. I continue to be mightily impressed by Suarez, a new champion now advancing in NASCAR.

I'd rather see somebody else than Gutierrez in a Manor. He's had his chance and not been able to/not fully taken it. I'd rather see people like King and Giovinazzi take the seat.

This, Esteban isn't great, those who say he is, I feel are better off just sticking to watching junior formula. Because all the great nothing he showed there (who cares if he won a GP2 title, I can show you many other lackluster gp2 winners), he brings it full force to F1.

Gutierrez never won a GP2 title, his 2 titles were in GP3 & F-BMW.
Personally I'd like to see Nasr get one of the Manor seats.

You're right, the argument I usually hear for him is, he was a GP2 race winner and that he did well in the championship before moving to F1. However, I usually retort with how that season was one of the worst fields talent wise seen.
