Just found this on youtube and it sweet.
It shows the design of the car, the steering wheel(top right) and number of cylinders(top right center)
What will the cars look like in the future?

Pretty cool, but it needs to be slower.

Interesting find! The video needs to be slower so that the transitions between each year are smoother but other then that, the video is very informative and well-made.

I previously found an animated GIF of this. When it was posted on another board, it was requested that it be slower there, too.

Find someone who knows what they are doing in photoshop and they should be pretty easily able to change the timing of each frame. Maybe the people who do the avatar thread?

I can make that slower.

Easily done in gimp.

60ms delay between frames.(normal was 30ms)

That's so cool. Amazing how it changes a lot every year, but after about 1995 very little changes shape wise.

That will be because they are so aerodynamic that little can be done to improve it.

Too bad Aryton Senna never got to see those changes :( .
Are we forgetting that the shape of the car is decided by the regulations?
Nope, but it would be funny if the FIA suddenly regulated all the cars for 2013 have to be as they were in 1950...

That, and the FIA aren't doing any major changes to the regulations that the car shape has to be based on.

Would be interesting to see what todays engineers would come up with using the 1950's rulebook.

I've wondered about this too. Would be an interesting question to ask to someone like Newey. I'd be very interested in a front-engined open wheel series, with modern safety features of course.

I saw that I4 engine how sad it muat have been.

It's really not bad sounding for a 4-pot, sounds quite mean IMO. Though obviously not as badass as the 12 cylinders also shown in this video,

Amazing to think it started with a inline 8.

Those are iron blocks.

F1 Racing engines are most likely made with aTitanium-Aluminium alloy.

I4's are slow & we know it.

Depends on what the application is. In '52 and '53, Ferrari's inline 4 was well suited for the 2 litre normally aspirated engine formula in those years. It was a very torquey engine.

In BMW's case, a 4 pot probably made more sense for reliability reasons. Especially with the crazy power outputs that turbocharging allowed for at that time.

It's about making the best suited car for the regulations. :D
