PC vs 8 year old console

Are we really comparing this?

The GT6 problems have nothing to do with the age of the console.

If you want a fair comparison, GT6 is rubbish comparing with the GT5.

EDIT

Is AC running on a console? Why don't the tires leave marks on the road surface, or throw up dust?

Assetto Corsa is in development and their actual costumers paid a low price for the game because of that.

And the developer have a direct contact with their costumers, usually fixing (when possible) any issue in a matter of days (or justifying the reasons their are impossible to be fixed, either soon or ever).

How many cars and tracks in AC? What features/modes are available? How much RAM is needed to run it?

Most comparisons so far have been against Forza 5, and most people seem to agree that GT6 is better. I suppose it's only fair to up the ante in order to try and knock GT6 off it's pedestal.

they have proper race rules, qualifying and starts. Neither of those things seems to be too much of a trouble in tons of racing PS3 games.

My whining about GT is focused on very questionable design decisions and the PD's 1998 mindset. I don't expect 3D trees, vivid track environment, people looking alive on the outside of the circuit from them in PS3.

What I do expect is a racing game that you could compare against its peers.

I said GT6 is rubbish comparing with GT5, that have nothing to do with Forza.
You afraid with the comparison?
You should.

There is another thing that really pisses me off. I mean, GT is a benemoth of a franchise, and still, they can't be bother to go public about their work, to embrace the community, listen to the fans, give insights about their ambitions and so on. It's like, for them, we are all disposables, it's like all they care is the pursuit of Kaz vision, and everything else doesn't really matter.

I can't speak for other critics but for me, it's not about knocking GT of it's pedestal. I want to see GT grow and develop to be as good or better than any other current racer/sim on the market. I hope PD themselves see these other games and I hope they use the ideas they see to continue to develop and improve GT.

For instance, that AC video, it looks like a ton of fun doing that rally racing. I was so disappointed when PD chose to ignore rally racing in GT6. They are already simulating dirt/snow/asphalt in the game. All they really need to do is develop a game mode around it. Similar to fuel consumption/tire wear/qualifying etc for races. GT has everything here to do these things but PD doesn't seem to bother with developing these parts of GT for the actual "video game" part of GT. It's just a bit frustrating.

I've just read about how when they close the online for GT5, that DLC (THAT WE PAID FOR!) must be downloaded and kept permanently on our hard-drive or we lose it. I am furious!

I bought GT5 at launch, and as I've said before on this thread, was disappointed by it. However I like hot lapping and so later bought the anniversary edition as it was cheaper than buying the DLC. It is currently still in its wrapper as I thought I'd install it and download the DLC when I'm at a loose end.

Being they aren't going to be making any money on it anyway, they should have an archived file available for download to USB stick from their site.

I am a big fan of old games and like to re-visit them. If this is an indication of how things are going to be, my future is not looking bright. I still have a big collection of games for old consoles, but now that they release games in an unfinished state (buggy and/or with features pending) this is going to be a major issue. I accept that in the case of online games they cannot keep the servers up forever (sucks in the case of an online only game, but that's the nature of them unfortunately), but in the case of DLC or patches I feel they have an obligation to make them available.

I agree. Short of shutting PSN/Playstation Store down entirely, I don't see why DLC and patches shouldn't be available for download indefinitely.

Hell, as far as I know if you've got GT HD on your download list, you can still redownload it.
Seeing how it's pretty much impossible to contact Polyphony directly (I tried once and nearly had a nervous breakdown) I think my best bet is to contact Sony. While they may have this covered somewhere in fine print, I think it's pretty poor. I'm really hoping the gaming media see this as being a problem worth highlighting.

Interestingly the GT5 DLC topic was trending significantly on reddit, and GT gets no exposure there normally. So I suspect the broader gaming community is aware of sony and PDs actions here.

Recently bought and installed DLC for Shift 2 and Race Pro, Race pro dates back to 2009 so i don't see why they can't keep it available, nor why they have to close down the online services for GT5 neither, apart from forcing most people to GT6 that way.

I was looking at the HSC and read the description about the car and it mentioned how good the cockpit was , so I bought it and guess what? It's just a black block lol.

I was very impressed with what PD had pulled off in the beginning of December but I found myself bored to death very quickly. Made a few nice tunes and enjoyed that a lot. Actually I blame the Gran Turismo franchise that it is not able to keep me interested. Can have 2 reasons: change of interest in games or same old play mechanics since 1998. There is a bit of truth in both of them but the latter is the real issue. I sold GT6 last week and I am saying definitely goodbye to the franchise!

It does seem hard to come up with non-cynical reasons for the shut down. GT5's online is about as bare basics as you can get, no hosted servers (it's all P2P), no matchmaking to take care of, extremely limited leaderboards. That other games with what externally at least appears to be much more hardware intensive online systems stay up for years sometimes, is strange.

And then there's the whole "if anyone has the cash to do it, PD does". Their budgets are historically very large. They don't need to penny pinch like this, or if they do there's something quite amiss.

I'm not seeing any reasons why they couldn't keep the servers up if they wanted to, and a few pretty cynical reasons why they might want to kill them off early, namely driving GT6 sales and saving a quick buck by not bothering to support the older game.

Plus, you'll need to have your game updated forever to work, if you try to run the vanilla game with the DLC installed, the game should ignore it but no, when you select GT Mode the game will crash every time.

Alright. Forget about Assetto Corsa. Check out Project CARS this time. Oh, Gran Turismo, just look at those details, please hear that engine sound. Someone talked about dirt and dust, pCARS just blows GT out of the water, huh?
I wonder if GT7 will have EVERY track and EVERY car modeled on these standards.

The only I can think of is the "best racing sim on PlayStation platform". Something that will be fiercely challenged by Project Cars.
Can we stop placing a ridiculous amount of hype and expectation on PCARS? It looks good but I just feel like we are so desperate for something of pre PS3 GT quality that we will throw anything into the mix as a competitor.

Well, pCARS will be a competitor to GT, that's a fact. Have you played it? I did, the experience it's just awesome, when it gets on consoles it'll make an impact. GT better raise the stakes on next gen, otherwise it is done.

I must admit, there's not many racing games that have floated my boat on the PS3. I would have loved to see a sequel for Enthusia. Unfortunately Konami decided to release it at the same time as Forza and GT4. That game was a little gem physics-wise (provided you had a wheel) but was largely overlooked.

It seemed that in the PS2 era there was a lot of interest from developers in the sim/semi-sim genre. With PS3 it seems that a lot of the games have been more on the arcadey side. The first Dirt had some nice stages but the handling was horrible in my opinion (when a mkII Escort wont slide, it's not the game for me). Dirt 2 had a pretty nice semi-sim handling model but hardly any rally courses. I own but haven't actually got around to playing the third, but then they release Showdown which was of absolutely no interest whatsoever. Grid was a bit of fun (although the settings I had to put in to make it feel good went against all my knowledge of how to set up a wheel in a game) but a little too arcadey for my taste and I've not bothered with 2. F1 generally isn't my thing, but I'm quite interested to try the latest one with the classic cars. And then there's the new WRC games of which I've played the first and actually quite enjoyed (it's no Richard Burns Rally, but pretty fun). It seemed to me like the second was a bit lazy, but I think I'll pick up 3 and 4 at some point.

It seems to me that there is good reason to pin some hope on Project CARS because in fairness, what else is there? I have a PC too so have some decent options there, but for console only gamers there isn't much else to look forward to. I personally am not pinning much hope on Drive Club because they have mentioned graphics this and social that with no real mention of the driving experience itself. I would have thought that would be important in a racing game.

It would have been interesting to see Pcars on the ps3 purely so we can see how sounds and framerate would have compared to gt6 then we see what excuse PD defenders came up with if they were good

They took a community vote and overwhelmingly voted to skip PS3 and head straight to PS4, which I also think was a good idea. Nothing to be gained and everything to lose by launching the first volley on 8 year old technology. They'll both be able to take swings at each other on brand new systems, I suspect within a year, GT7P vs PCars.
