So a review written by a man who owns one of the two cars being compared? He won't be biased...

You're right, he won't. He asked Bugatti to lend him the car for a good few days at the very least so he got more than just a "first impression" of it and could compare them with some impartiality. He also comes to the conclusion that there is no winner or loser in the test.

I have the magazine next to me as I type. You don't. Until you've read it, keep the sarcasm to yourself.

No winnder or loser...how convenient. I fail to see how borrowing a Veyron for a few days makes you impatrial. Still, it was written in a magazine, so it must be the truth, right?

You know, for supercar standards the F1 is quite small. It has the same footprint as a Porsche 993 (which Gordon Murray thought was the ideal size so that it was actually useable in traffic).

He bought the McLaren back in 1997. It would be difficult to get absolute impartiality given that he had a handful of days with the Veyron and has had thirteen years with the McLaren. However, given that a couple of days is about a day and a half longer than most magazines or TV programmes are allowed even access to the Veyron, chances are that he did so in order to give the best impression on the car he could. Let me cut you some lines from the test:

Rowan Atkinson
"I can't tell you how relieved I was when Bugatti agreed that we could have it's precious offspring for a couple of days. It's not as good as having it for a couple of years, but it's a damned sight better than having it for a couple of hours. Two days is sufficient time for the novelty to start to wear off. Long enough to get bored with it. Long enough, basically, to acquire an owner's perspective"

Rowan Atkinson
"I feel that my primary aim here should be to try to describe what it would be like to share your life with these cars"

Rowan Atkinson
"Which is best? Ha! I suspect that most readers of this magazine would better appreciate the McLaren, because it is the ultimate representation of the computer-less sports car... but, I have to tell you, the Bugatti is adorable... it is a truly great car, blisteringly fast, its modernity showing up clearly the period deficiencies of the F1"

Assume all you like. Atkinson is not a journalist, he's a comedian and actor, with an incredible passion for cars. He races at the Goodwood Revival every year in vintage cars that he owns, rather than simply drives, and he no doubt has enough money to buy a Veyron too.

Octane is probably one of the best car magazines in the world. They aren't about road tests and they don't sell advertising space to car manufacturers - much of their advertising is for classic car dealerships and auction houses - so there is no bias for or against anything they feature. Contributors include and have included Carrol Shelby, Jay Leno, Chris Rea, Sir Jack Brabham and Rowan Atkinson.

Now maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer the F1 and Veyron tested side-by-side by someone like Rowan Atkinson than I would a quick drag race on Top Gear with a TV audience to pander to.

So like I said - assume all you like, but I'm prepared to believe that the test was as impartial as you'll find anywhere.

Here's another view on the McLaren.

Martin Brundle on the McLaren F1:

(track is Oulton Park if anyone is wondering)

Mandatory mod for all of my F1's in GT5 will be a brake upgrade. Outside of that and some suspension tweaks I'll probably leave them alone.

This is standard F1 with 627 hp just upgraded with rear wing and some other aerodynamic stuff to look as LM...
Martin Brundle say"Meclaren F1 is KING"!!!!

I'll not change anything, so it fully remains what it is! ;)

The other parts are also on YouTube.
By the way, i think the GTR Longtail is the best looking McLaren.

F1 is not a fastest car any more, but I still believe best package of MR layout roadcar.

McLaren in Bridgestone booth @ Tokyo Motor Show 1997.
first Gran Turismo booth also existed. Yamauchi-san must have watched this compact packaged car at close range.

Your statement about Yamauchi is odd, as all cars in GT are meticulously detailed. takes months to complete one model. One look at GT 5 Prologue and you'll see how much work went into it. That said those are some awesome photos of MacLaren GT.

I hope the LM version makes it in, not the gussied up Road Car. Those versions are distinct, the LM was a lighter car with different body dynamics(slight), different wheels and I think it's downforce was adjustable front and rear out of the box.

Don't think he was commenting on the modelling mate. I think he meant Kaz must have got to see the car up close and in detail all the way since back in 1997.

Any takers on the "cost", in credits, of the F1 in Gran Turismo 5? Take a guess!:dunce:

no, it sure isn't.

-> Maybe it will be one of those cars that goes Cr2 or 3 million and up just for the *base* model (just like in real life). :scared:

Is there a car we could compare it to from Gran Turismo 4?
XJ220?

The McLaren F1? (Duh, the F1...look at the thread I'm in.)

The XJ220 would be a great comparison considering it was the fastest car until the F1 came along. Another would be the S7 and the Cien.

What I meant was, is the price of the XJ22O in GT4 plausible or even logical for the F1? I think it was 220,000 or so.

Oh. Oh, no.

pLiDeX suggested it would cost one million credits; my response wasn't suggesting it would cost less, but more. Perhaps even more than the Veyron would go for.

I'm thinking it would be in that neighborhood too. From at least 750,000+. As should the Veyron.

I'll say 1M Credits for the McLaren F1 road car in GT5. And just like its real-life counterpart, it's worth every penny or Credit (or whatever your currency is).

I think that F1 will cost half million credits and F1 LM will be a prize car and not sellable!!!

I'd say 1 Million Credits. Also, if they do what they did with GT4 how they had the Legendary cars thing I bet it will be in there.

I'd say the Tommy Kaira ZZII is closest in both looks and probable performance.
