It's Allegrezza time. Guess I'll save that other fic I was planning on reading for another time.

I just stumbled across the correct Dash tumblr I asked about last night while searching through CoffeeGrunt's favorites.

I forgot to ask this in my previous post, but you're referring to ask-rainb0w-dash, right?

Long comic is long, I reduced it by 33% so it wouldn't be 12000 pixels tall :D

Wow, what are Octy's bows made out of?

Not sure I should say it by name, but it involved evil-Twilight.

I think I know which story you mean. If I'm right, then I never read past chapter 2, and I haven't even thought about that fic for at least 2 months until now.

Why do you keep reading these terrible things? At least treat yourself to A Precious Rainbow or something to balance it out after you read them.

Swap Macintosh out with Heart of Gold and mine is identical.

TNTNE
Ballad
Heart of Gold Saga
Party Never Ended
Mommy Nearest Saga

Though "uncanny" would have been the better word to use. And I'd be lying if Heart of Gold wasn't sneaking up.

Ok, I managed to delay my BF3rbating enough to finish Coffee's demands.

Chu Chu Rocket, eh?

And I suppose the comic itself was pretty funny, as well.

That's a positive.

I don't think I've ever seen a tumblr started with the full support of another tumblr before (aside from Ask Cheerilee/Ask Berry Punch, which don't count).

You brought it up once, and then the subject just died.
Oh oh oh oh. Okay. Never mind.

Those five, I will say that I can do top 10(there is stuff that deserves to be within those five), but at the end their value and their position is quite hard to determinate(I swear that To fix You and the Pinkie one where she goes through a state of psychosis caused by Discord should be there, but is really hard to get the top five).
You know, I think that's kinda weird. Because I loved and loved and loved and loved To Fix You nonstop until it ended (perhaps not as much as the author's previous story, Confessions and Considerations, but damn close to it), but when it ended something just felt missing when all was said and done. I dunno.

I actually mapped my Top 10 out while I was busy not paying attention in Advertising today. In any case, I've abandoned the idea I was going to do, so sorry for making you guys type those out. I admittedly gave up on it soon after I got home, but I was still curious about what akira would say.

So yeah, I was thinking about that Armstrong pony, and then decided to do some searching.

The things I found are glorious:

I love this fandom. So much.

This. You have to read some heart meltingly happy stuff between all of the heart shatteringly depressing/stomach turning stuff.

It's nothing special. :sly:

@Mint, Mustang obviously uses magic to get the task done.

Is it just me or does that human AJ look like she's about to be sick? The pony version works well, the human on the other hand, not so much.

Well, A Precious Rainbow isn't actually happy, per se; and that's... well, not really the reason I suggested finding something along those lines. I mean, reading something crazy happy like The Cutie Mark Conspiracy or Sweet Apple Capers makes you feel better, but I found it doesn't make you feel better long term if for whatever reason your mind wanders back to the story.

I was talking more in terms of taking those horrible things and then presenting a situation where everything went far better than they were initially presented, so the original story doesn't bother you to the same extent anymore (which is what A Precious Rainbow did for me in regards to Cupcakes, as the latter story no longer bothers me because I can simply act as if the former was how it actually happened).

Is it just me or does that human AJ look like she's about to be sick? The pony version works well, the human on the other hand, not so much.
The pony one is HUEG LIEK XBAWKS, so I couldn't use it.

Meh. It's only his second-best story.

Interesting. TNTNE has been on top of my list since early-mid June, The Ballad slowly climbed up to second soon after, Macintosh pretty much slotted into 3rd spot after I read part 16, The Party Never Ended was the first multi-chapter MLP fanfic I ever read (so that went straight to the top of the list until TNTNE came along), and I said that Alicorn went into 5th place after I read chapter 3.

That's a positive.

I don't think I've ever seen a tumblr started with the full support of another tumblr before (aside from Ask Cheerilee/Ask Berry Punch, which don't count).

I never got a proper look at that tumblr last night because I was too tired, but it looks like a good one from what I can see.

Meh. It's only his second- best story.

Fixed, plus he added a reference to TVST in the latest chapter, which I liked very much.

Yeah there is something lacking, something about the closure but it was still overall pretty good, there was also A Precious Rainbow in my mind, but as a whole To fix You is better.

There is also tons of shipping that comes back to my mind, Cheerilee/Twilight was quite good as well, also a couple of AppleDash comes to my mind which were also good, Allegrezza is good just like The Vinyl Scratch Tapes.

Also, Painless should be in those top 5(I think is the Pinkie's psychotic break one).

Also, YES!

Someone made that vector.

(*Goes back to checking stuff on ED*)

^^^^I kind of figured "Heart meltingly happy" was a massive exaggeration and not really what you meant as I typed that. I was just too tired to to edit it or correct myself.

You know that feeling when you first wake up, and it takes some time to really feel awake? I've been stuck like that all day. It took me 5 hours to fold some laundry because every once in a while I'd just stare at the wall for a few minutes; half asleep. (Didn't help that I was re-watching Inception....again, although the bass from that music coming through the subs in the living room did help keep me from going out entirely.)

And have you read Sweet Apple Massacre? Because that's one of those stories I'm avoiding. I've actually made common thing to just scroll past anything with the words "Sweet Apple Massacre" outside this site.

Anyway, I meant to go to bed really early due to that whole tiredness thing, so I'm going now before something else distracts me.

I've just read what some other people thought about that fic.... I'm not even gonna go near it. Almost everyone thought that it was far worse than Cupcakes, and I agree that Mint shouldn't consider giving it a look, like, ever.

Well, at least the shirt that I bought last week will arrive any day now.

TNTNE and Ballad have never not been first or second, respectively. Which I suppose is the benefit of getting into them just as they were both starting back in mid-May. For the longest time it was TNTNE, Ballad, Dangerous Business, Progress and With a Heavy Heart.

Party Never Ended rocketed up my list as soon as I read it, tossing Dangerous Business out of the Top 3. Then Macintosh came along and knocked Dangerous Business out of the Top 4. Then Of Mares and Magic came and knocked Macintosh out of the Top 4. Then... well, you know, and the Top 5 was stable for a while with Progress rounding out the Top 5; even though I felt that the Progress chapters kept getting weaker and weaker (simply because With a Heavy Heart updates so infrequently).

The funny thing about Heart of Gold is that I originally wasn't that thrilled with it. I mean, I liked it when it was first being written; but I felt Junior Speedsters Forever was the superior "why is Gilda such a bitch" not-really-redemption story. Nick Nack always had the pieces in place in regards to characterization and character interactions that makes his stories so great to read, but the initial version of Heart of Gold was kind of sloppy in its presentation.
He wanted it to keep from being a "poor widdle Gilda" story, but there were quite a few times where it became one anyways. And the original ending was... kinda poop; and a major mood whiplash. He went back and basically cleaned up the story, and rewrote the last chapter almost entirely. And while I still thought it was the inferior story to Junior Speedsters Forever, it was a lot closer.

And it took me a couple of chapters to get into Summer Days, because my problems with the original HoG ending kept making me think Summer Days would be the same way. But once I got a feel for what Nick Nack was actually doing with the story, it started marching up the list fast.

Then Mommy Nearest knocked out two spectacular chapters in a row, and that pushed Macintosh out of the Top 5.

"I can walk away from :censored:ing nukes. That 🤬 won't work".
That one was great.

I still feel like making a list of my top 10 fics anyway.
Sorry. When I initially thought about it I was really only wondering about you, Mint and akira; and as soon as RykonZero posted Fallout: Equestria I basically threw the entire idea away because I know I will never read it.

As it is now:
  1. TNTNE
  2. Ballad
  3. Hog, FoS
  4. Party
  5. Mommy Nearest
  6. Macintosh
  7. Dangerous Business
  8. Applecores and Rainbows
  9. Out in the Cold
  10. With a Heavy Heart

Fixed, plus he added a reference to TVST in the latest chapter, which I liked very much.
One of these days I'll get around to explaining why I think IWSYT was CoffeeGrunt's best story. TVST actually is one of the reasons, but not the biggest one.

Yeah there is something lacking, something about the closure but it was still overall pretty good, there was also A Precious Rainbow in my mind, but as a whole To fix You is better.
It's just... well, there feels so much like there were major pieces of the story missing between the last chapter and the Epilogue. Why Rarity lashed out the way she did was never really explained. Why Dash got so much better so quickly was never explained. Why Applejack felt so strongly for Dash was never explained (even though the opposite was). And Fluttershy's role in Dash's backstory was never explained.

The problem was two fold:
  • The story directly alluded to all of those things as having a major effect on the story, and a few of them were implied that they would be explained at some point, and then they never were.
  • Confessions and Considerations explained all of those things (except the Rarity part, because that never happened in that story) in far greater and more loving detail than To Fix You did, even though Dash was in far worse of a bout of depression than she ever was in Confessions so those explanations were far more important.

It ultimately makes To Fix You come off as a much weaker story than I feel that it should have been, because there was so much more potential there that was never touched upon; and in comparison it makes Confessions and Considerations (which is probably my #11 story) that much stronger.

As far as A Precious Rainbow goes... well, something had been bothering me for the past few days about it, and I finally sat down and reread it again last night. And I came to the conclusion that wasn't far off from what I had been suspecting to be the case.

I now think that that story (and to a somewhat lesser extent, On Feathered Wings), more than any other single thing, is why Applejack is best pony. Because if something as horrible as the backstory for A Precious Rainbow actually happened, I can see Applejack as being who would be the one that could be relied on more than anyone else to pick up the pieces. Especially when Rainbow Dash is involved. And I feel that way in spite of the obvious canonization problems because I truly feel AJ would do the same thing in canon if it was ever required.

I still can't highly place it or really recommend it because of what it is, but it is an unbelievably powerful story for me.

I'm kinda glad you asked anyway. I've been meaning to compile a list of my favourite stories for a while now, and this was the kick up the backside I needed. I've already stated my top 5, so here's the rest:

6. Allegrezza
7. Tabluna Rasa
8. The Sun is Tired
9. Two Beats (gritty, yeah...)
10. My Little Hangover (which only just made it into my top 10)

And even though it's a downright hilarious and intentionally mindless fic, Michael Bay Presents: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic just misses out on a place in my top 10.

Hold on, part 3 of that story has been up on EqD for over a month? What.... how.... how the hell did I miss that?! I don't even recall seeing part 3 appearing back in September. Looks like I'll be reading it tomorrow then, and nothing is going to stop me from doing that!

Wow, I sure posted a lot less than usual. I only posted here one today! Well, anyways, it's late, so night.

Well, I was already booting up GTA IV to keep doing those dates and keep burning time, thanks to Rockstar for creating the "Taxi" feature I can reply to some stuff while doing that stuff.

I haven't read yet Confessions and Considerations, but I think that summarizes what is the problem with it.

Actually I can see the problem with recommending it. I mean is good but it gets too cocky at the end, ironically what ends up screwing it up is the stuff after chapter/part 3(or four, I cant remember that well), allow me to elaborate:

What A Precious Rainbow was at the first episodes was a story of self-recovery(or something like that) using the Cupcakes incident as plot device, until chapter 3 is good because it focuses mainly on Rainbow and the events that followed the whole Cupcakes recovery; getting out of the hospital, acknowledging her incapability and dealing with the trauma caused by this, also the reaction of the people around her, but notice that on these chapters the focus is more on Rainbow Dash and her characteristics which are used to manage the plot.

After that, the story starts going downhill as the recovery starts to appear and it becomes inevitably stereotypical, in the sense that the following events can be(swimming contest I think) guessed pretty easy and the silliness begins. Not that the following of such thing is bad, but in contrast to the first section it really spoils the story, doesn't follow the same trend and such change of focus is too abrupt(it goes from RD facing and surpassing the trauma, to RD just finding other area to be herself).

With that there is no more character development and the closure becomes sort of meh for me to be honest, I would respect it if it had followed the trends from the first chapters by keep building on the trauma and try to get an RD product of such eventually, rather than the same RD but in other environment.

That is mainly the reason of why I didn't like it too much, I was thrilled until chapter 3(or four or whatever), but from that point it lost all interest as it became very stereotypical, is well written and all but there was a pretty cool alternative for that story which was replaced by the establishment of the status quo. I believe that a better outcome(like an alternative RD from such events) could have been produced from that story.

Either way all of this is my opinion about it, so I guess is a good read(not epic) but these are sort of the problems that I found about it.

Did you read The Cupcake Killer (the sequel)?

Because Dash getting over what had happened to her quickly and abruptly was done intentionally to allude to the fact that Rainbow hadn't actually gotten over everything and had just thrown up a mental wall against it; pouring all of her energy into swimming and going back to her old mannerisms as a coping mechanism. And A Precious Rainbow ended while the town itself was still sorting through exactly what had happened on that day and in the months prior.

In the sequel, if I recall correctly, she has a nervous breakdown immediately after the investigation ends and Mr. and Mrs. Cake reopen Sugarcube Corner; and spends most (arguably all) of the story suffering bad from PTSD and survivor's guilt.

There was a sequel?

Either way, if it manages to wrap up the events of the first story then why make it a sequel. A proper closure indicating a sequel would have been nice.

Yeah, Dash whacks out proper really soon into the story.

At one point, she gets so bad that when they are planning on making a memorial for those that died, she goes out of her way to make it known that she wants nothing to do with it unless Pinkie is also included in the memorial.

I don't remember how the sequel ended, though, so I'll probably have to reread it as well.

I just realized that I spent two damn hours working on this, and I'm going to have to do it all over again when JJ uploads the raw images themselves rather than the screencaps that others uploaded.

It was totally worth it.

It gets better, the sequel and something else:

>The Cupcake Killer
>Apple of Her Eye
>Confessions of Love(shipping and a clop(?) version apparently)
>Investigations of a Nightmare

There are actually 4 stories related to A Precious Rainbow, without the ED guidance is actually pretty easy to overlook these things.

Actually I read some parts of Investigations of a Nightmare, but there weren't(or I missed) references to A Precious Rainbow, interesting.

Apple of Her Eye sounds familiar, but I don't think I've read it.

Oh boy. Busy day tomorrow.

Not that clop, but still hardcore shipping. However is more like a coffee break, in the sense that is a short side story of Investigations of a Nightmare.

I'll leave the rest for tomorrow when I get the time to read them(the other 3, and the original to get the references).

Coffeegrunt, I'm about to take the wind out of your sails.

I just started to read Allegezza. although fascinating...so far it's a giant Drunk-fest (part 5 as of this post) I'm sorry, but the fun comes out of this when you have Alcoholics on both sides of the family. and, thanks to the way I was raised, i don't party. you young bucks (and not "buck" in the pony sense, either) may still be able to do that much, but i do not participate in alcohol based stress relief.

besides, what is so tasty about hard liquor? the only thing i taste out of things stronger than beer IS the alcohol (and the beer just...doesn't work) I make an exception for a Guinness.

edit: okay, now it gets sweet...until Vy plays with the stereo settings...you don't mess with one's sound system settings :P

I'm sorta curious at what point in S2E4's development they decided to change Luna's hair, because it doesn't look like they started the episode off with her having Celly hair (though I've forgotten so much about how to use Flash that there may have been a reason that had to do it that way that I'm forgetting).

Granted, I'm a sucker for women in skintight outfits with blasters, but...

That's because you're a god damn 'Merican!

Also, I favorited art that wasn't unit-one's, so

You're no longer his personal stalker?

Dammit CoffeeGrunt, how am I supposed to find it when you favorite ALL the things?

DA is my hub now. It's where I get all my awesome pony from!

Ok, I managed to delay my BF3rbating enough to finish Coffee's demands.
Long comic is long, I reduced it by 33% so it wouldn't be 12000 pixels tall

For that, you have earned yourself an unsoiled pint of milk!

There's fuss about Allegrezza? Woot!

I still have to actually read mor than a paragraph of VST. It's a bit of a different dynamic, but I'd end up subconsciously ripping ideas from it anyway.

Meh. It's only his second-best story.

One of these days I'll get around to explaining why I think IWSYT was CoffeeGrunt's best story. TVST actually is one of the reasons, but not the biggest one.

I am genuinely intrigued. I demand answers!

Coffeegrunt, I'm about to take the wind out of your sails.

You didn't...you really didn't.

Alcohol is a means to a comical end. Essentially, Octy had to be pretentious about something, so alcohol fitted.

I rarely drink too. Only in company with friends at maximum once a week, more often than that alot rarer. Cider is my staple, I hate liquor.

I bet no one will guess, what's my next picture is going to be.

Hmmm....

Star Figher saving Derpy from some sweetie villains?

Writing has messed me up bad. This is the most adorable thing I have ever seen:
