This sentense is enough to stop me from reading further.

Im sorry about this really being offtopic, but since I can't message you Maskrider. I'd like to know if you have the pic in your avatar without your nick on it. :) I love it :D

The autosave feature is of concern for me; I have a younger brother who at times lends my PS2 whenever he has friends visiting. In GT4, they'll be using GT-mode to buy cars to race them in 2P-mode. Unless I make it very clear for him early enough, that using "my card" will be resulting in a rather mean version of me, he'll probably use it because there'll be loads of cash to buy new cars, plus there'll be cars to sell to stack up more cash for desired, temporary cars.

My main worry, however, is that he can also end up using my save by accident, of which I'll curse the autosave feature to eternal and beyond damnation.

On-topic:

The auto-save feature doesn't bother me at all. And with the DFP, I simply feel like driving (although no clutch and no feedback from clutch and the brake).

I can't see why some of you guys dont like the game. I think it's a HUGE improvement over the last game. The physics of the game are incredible... i've done of few driving schools and i put everything i leanerned into good use in the game. The car sounds are much better, and i love the tuner cars (Fav is teh Power House Amuse R1 Titan S2000) and so far Nurnburgring is my favorate track. I'm still working on the licences and also i need to tune my Skyline. Anyway, the game gets a BIG  from me

P R O : 👍

- many cars
- many tracks
- improved handling
- nice grafics
- good sound
- best and biggest realistic racing game so far (?)

C ON T R A : 👎

- A-spec system is not motivating ( better : strict PS classes, compare GT2)
- Not enough cups ( example : one 4WD cup; better: 3 cups 200 - 350 - 500 PS)
- no choice between digital and analog speedmeter (gauge)
- too easy beginning : import money(>Gt3), allowed to do missions immediately
- ( SS R 11 is missing :( )

This list only reflects my personal opinion.

I'm 90% impressed with GT4. But the one reason I'm posting here instead of racing is the biggest flaw in GT4: I'm unable to set the accelerate (right-analog Down) and brake (right-analog up) in this game, like you could in GT3. I've tried for hours to get something I'm comfortable using, and it looks like I have to use the standard X and [], which is killing my thumbs!

I went against my wishes, and transfered GT3 game data, but I'm running the license tests again to get a feel for the different physics of GT4.

Max...Yeah!
Where the hell is SSR 11?
That was my favorite track.

That's okay...I can definitely do without it now that there are so many new tracks.

On the other hand, I'm glad about the extra $100k.

(EDIT)
Pupik...my right stick works by default for accel/decel but it is up=gas down=brake.
I still prefer the buttons.

GT4 doesnt suck, its just been hyped, and people expected too much

Well maybe... but expectations rise when a developer delays a several times. (especially when they are eliminating features, i.e. the much anticipated online play)...

You can accelerate and brake with the analog stick and you don't have to change anything in the options.... just do it :)

oops you have still updated it....

Hey man, I CAN do that, you know, I went to options trying to modify to control settings to right-analog up for gas and right-analog down for brake, but I couldn't find it, so I pressed "default" and came back to arcade mode thinking that I have to use X for gas :scared:, but you know what , after the race began, I let go X and tried to push right analog up (I don't know why I did that) and iT WORKED man, then i tried push the right analog down and...THE BRAKE LIGHT TURNED ON. Have you tried pushing the analog during the race yet? Btw, there's one thing, I have GT3 save in the card with control settings are also R-analog up for gas, R-analog down for brake. i don't know if this has anything to do with GT4 control settings.

F-stick up for acceleration and down for brake is the default in GT4.

If there is one type of game that we are able to judge immediately it's a simulator. GT games are wayyy more arcade-biased than many of the PC simulators out there anyway (which I'm sure you've mastered too), but GT4 claims to be a driving-simulator, so if it's good our first impressions should be "ooh, this feels just like driving in real life".

Having to learn the physics just proves it's way off the mark in the first place, so don't go telling genuine sim racers or real-life drivers that they should learn "how to play it", and then still claim it's a super-realistic masterpiece.

I don't have GT4 yet, I play a wide selection of PC sim-racing titles though, and I fully expect an assisted arcade-biased driving experience in GT4 just as I had with the previous GT titles, nothing I have seen has convinced me it will be otherwise, but it will still be a fun game I'm sure.

OMG... okay now... so you may be a sim car racer (why are you even commenting about my post when you dont even have the game is my first question... 💡 , but i'm sure many people here have not really played hardcore... and many use the DS2 (which cannot simulate a simulator..) ... i dont know if you really race cars, but I take my car to the track on a normal basis, and knowing the physics of a car , how it handles on the track with suspension changes/tire changes/engine mod changes, i must say that GT4 is a MASTERPIECE when it comes to driving on track with real cars. Do you even know if these people who've made this comment know how to drive a car like really drive a car on a track and not in a straight line on the freeway? Also if they are using DS2 or regular controller? c'mon now.. dont comment until you have actually PLAYED the game.. 💡 💡

Guys: he wants to reverse the right analog stick, so down is gas, up is brake... which he can't do.

Me, I figured that the menu had a typo (left instead of right) so I had gas, brake, throttle, and steering ALL on the left stick, PLUS the default gas and brake on the right stick. Made for some interesting cornering.

I know right-analog UP works for gas, and right-analog DOWN works for brake. I'd like to reverse those two. It doesn't feel...comfortable, for some reason.

[Edit: Duke beat me to the punch on my own question.]

There are quite a few more realistic sims out there you know, but I do agree that GT4 has hit the almost perfect balance between sim and arcade.

if you don't like this game, you don't know how to drive.

this game was designed for use with a steering wheel.

this game was designed for use with a steering wheel.

Yes I think so.

Pro's

  • Many Tracks
  • Excellent physics
  • greatly improved graphics
  • Photomode is sweet, period
  • Slightly more replay control
  • Expanded "simulation" Mode now known as GT mode

Con's
  • A lot of the cars nobody cares about
  • Loading time between options screens is very annoying
  • No walkthrough for setting up network games.

There's probably a few other small things that I don't like. But those are my main gripes. All in all it's an excellent package from what I can see.

Stop your whining... I’m a policeman you idiot! 👍

Now that we got your daily ARNOLD quote out of the way we can move on to first thoughts of GT4.

There have already been a lot of rants on this board about the game and I have to say it's too bad some members feel the way they do. It's funny too how some of things that changed actually helped fix the same problems many of those members complain about with the GT series. In any regard here we go:

GT4 is AMAZING! 👍 I give PD full credit for bringing the depth they have on a system that is now VERY dated (the PS2). Having played the GT series from day 1, it was nice to have a lot of "new" experiences with GT4, and even though some things can get frustrating initially, in the end, I feel the changes are for the better and will propel the series forward when we hit the new Sony platform and GT5.

1st off, it is way more challenging, even if you’re a solid GT3 player. I couldn't jump right in and dominate in underpowered, non-driver assisted cars. The physics and controls have changed tremendously over previous versions, but IMHO for the better. Cars behave more true to real-life, things like locking brakes, under-oversteer is more pronounced when you get the car squirly, and you can actually steer out of spins (something i found in GT3 when you hit a certain point you were SOL no matter how much countersteer you tried to apply). What this means though, is you have to relearn how to drive in GT. I think that many long time fans will be frustrated with this at first, b/c they expected to strap it on and rule the roads as before. But when you think about it, there's immediate challenge right there, as you have to learn how to get your fast times you were accustomed too.

Having said that, as I started to progress through the B license I found to already start to grasp the limits of the car better, and I have to say the 900 degree DFP RULES! If you want the true GT experience, get 1 immediately. The biggest thing I noticed was steering sensitivity and response varied by car (hey this is true IRL too!). Crappy cars had crappy steering… imagine that. The few high-end cars I drove definitely showed increased performance in that dept. and braking. It’s almost like they all had independent physics and controls ;)

Rallying is COMPLETELY different and will take some getting used to, I think it’s gone too much towards the feel of track driving, but it’s definitely better that the easy drifting of GT3. IMHO I think it’s a step forward not back in terms of this. We’ll see as we get further in if this changes or not.

In terms of AI, I only did a couple of races in Arcade mode to try it out, and the AI is definitely the best it’s been in the GT series. Having said that, it still has a lot of shortcomings and isn’t at the level it needs to be with the series. However, I think the real blame is the old PS2 hardware and not the lack of skill from PD’s developers. I expect GT5 will see a huge improvement in this area.

Graphically the game is STUNNING! A big step up from GT3 (which to date was the best looking game on PS2). Car models are tight, tracks and scenery are vastly improved. And the new menus are really nicely done. The game just looks uber polished.

Cars… cars… cars baby!! Sure complain about this one’s in this one’s out, there’s “too many of this” whatever… no game out there can touch the depth and qty of vehicles in GT. Absolutely amazing, it will leave you wishing you had unlimited credits so you can buy everything and try it out… it’s hard to even figure out where to start (*cough* TVR *cough*). And I can confirm ALL THE PAL update cars are in! Also, Lexus, Infinity, and Scion have been added and Acura has been expanded in the USA section. The FPV GT now has racing stripes in the paint scheme (it looks uber hot), and all the new Euro cars are there as well including the Alpha GT and the full line of Audi’s.

GT Auto is nicely reconfigured and the wing shop looks promising for adding downforce to some cars. Also, the wheel shop is cool with the “Special Wheels” section. Lots of hot looking rims in there which will add some nice flare to your ride. The animations for car wash and oil change are redone and look way better.

Photo mode is AWESOME. I’ve only played around with it for about a ½ hour and it’s going to be something that I spend countless hours in. I love the touch… there’s nothing better than taking hot shots of your rides, and the fact you can save them to a USB stick is all the better. Custom wallpaper galore en route!

First dabble with photo mode:

Anyway, I’ve rambled on enough for now, and can’t wait to finish work today and truly sink my teeth into the game (figuring a good 7-8 hours of play tonight :sly: )

I’ve included a slew of screenies and pics for your viewing pleasure. Loads more to come. Excuse the quality of some, using a digi cam, not a capture card.

Would everyone agree that Gran turismo is still the best racer money can buy?

i have been looking at some reviews Gamespot mostly............they scored it 8.9 ok good score but what i dont understand is shallow games, really bloddy shallow games like burnout 3 scored a 9.5!!! i own burnout 3 and on sheer content alone gt4 should have scored better. This is without taking into accout the much better physics, graphics, sound, presentation gt4 has

they seem too have scored gt4 poorly because of a lack of inovation, well how come sports titles like winning eleven 8 only improve the most basic of things and not get knocked too harshly

Oh and a great thing i read from the edge review( they gave gt4 a 7), they thought Pgr2's nurb is a far more accurate interpretation. not too take away from PGR2 here but that kind of comment is a joke

The fanboy spirit has now left my body..............................All racing games are equal i love everything :dopey:

So far, I have exactly 1 complaint with GT4: the manual stinks on ice.

Yeah, there's not much to figure out, but I do enjoy reading manuals during "down time" (when my wife & kids are watching TV) and whenever I'm thinking about trying something new out. The lack of clear, step-by-step documentation on LAN play is a real bummer, for example.

The game itself, though? Oh yeah.

well a game is never easy if you take a underpowered car, but GT4 is not challenging... ( not included : some missions, gold in all licences, some cups , 24 h races)
... because you can take the car you want to,... ( I know that I repeat myself ;) )

So I wouldn't say that it is BY FAR more challening, not at all...
perhaps you are talking about the realistic handling and that this is making the game more difficult... well...ok it is a point

Well, there is a lot I DON'T LIKE in Gt4, but you're right it is still the best realistic racing game... burnout 3 9.5 and GT4 8.9 ? It should be the other way round.
Well as we all know GT4's nürburgring only varies inches from the original, having included every little bump on th road, is pgr2 it is a wide highway....

mark me in the GT4 roxxors category^^

Physics -

braking very much improved, it still has anti-lock on all cars, but when you mash the brakes like a noob it upsets your suspension like it should. +1

steering is also improved (note: you have to turn off assists for over/under steer along with traction control for realistic handling) feels more like you are actually turning the cars wheels instead of 'pointing' it with the controller now. +1

collisions... still needs some work here. Hitting other cars/walls slows you down more than it used to, but it is still possible to use cheap tatics to win races. -1

flips.... why is your car still limited to 45 degrees? I can understand no visible damage, but at least let me flip my car over. -1

Tuning-

nitrous! awsome mod - very fun^^ +1

wings are awsome for normal cars. I wish you could scale them so they look right on the car (they all seem really big) but hey! wings! +1

the addition of ballast weights is also nice +1

3 setups for each car? priceless. I love being able to save a set for small windy tracks, one for regular, and one for high speed. (yes you could do this before, but the new system is really convienent) +1

Tracks-

haven't even driven them all yet . so far ... amazing! +1

Cars-

too many for one person to drive them all. New leMans style races... more tuner cars... more classics... more skylines.. hmm still no SAABS -1... Honestly there are over 700 cars though. No other game even comes close.

Graphics-

all around nicer looking. A+ for the ps2. shame you can only put the top down in free-run on your convertible.

Online-

grrr. ok we want the game sometime in the PS2's lifetime, but can we get some online already? All the other sony in house devs seem to be getting thier games online. have to give it a -1 for no online mode.

A.I.-

so far not so good. the AI drivers are up to thier old tricks again! they sideswipe you as you pass, ram you from behind if you brake to soon... ect. -1

auto save-

why? I dont care about my win/loss record, but its a bit anoyying to have the game save every time you do something.

Oh Burnout ranked higher i am pretty sure in terms of acradish racing sim. Its totally on another level of GT. To be honest you can;t even compare Burnout 3 to GT4, cuz GT4 is more realistic. As well i think that ppl that gave it higher ratings enjoy that kind of arcadish racing of Burnout 3 rather than GT series. I am guessing why the review score. =) just my 2 pennies

I would say that from a general gamer perspective, GT4 is probably too "car crazy" to get them hyped in the short amount of time many reviewers would have with the game. For the true car fan, there isn't anything yet on the console market that even touches it... and with the DFP it's the best driving game i've ever played.

^I think burnout3 is more 'fun' than GT4... But its like comparing ace combat to falcon 4.0 - sure they are both jet fighter games, but one has a lot more depth than the other.

I have another example of how big reviews make big mistakes, i mean this isnt true is it?

To throw in another couple of concerns there's still no ability to use a car from your garage in the arcade mode. If you've unlocked a car, then it's available from the car list for the arcade mode, but all of the tweaks and upgrades will be missing from it

Thats from the IGN review they gave gt4 9.5 a good score atleast

not sure if its been stated before but im not gonna read 8 pages or whatever. well, anyway...if u have a problem with it seeming like a gt3 expansion, give some reasons as to how YOU would change it. the graphics seem as good as possible. its a racing game so tracks and cars is all that its about. this isnt gta:sa. the mods have improved ive heard and the physics is better. become a game designer if ur so much better at having ideas for games and then actually coming thru on them. u have to remember this is on a ps2, not ur 3Ghz, 2GB ram, desktop computer. get over it.
