Why do the "Pro's" use bumper cam?

My monitor (52") is approximately the same distance from my seating position as in the real McCoy. The in-car view makes everything further from me, and creates a depth distortion. Also, I don't want to see the AI steering wheel, when IT'S not the one steering the car....and the AI is delayed.

I drive cars since 1993, and the first thing I thought driving in cockpit view was:

" ***censored****, I' can't see where to put my tires!!!!! What's that A-pillars!!!!!"

Next day, driving my Agila... I noticed that A-pillars....
All a matter of being used to.

Sure, bumper cam is the more efficient way to drive, but I still prefer cockpit view with Premium cars for realism, even with the A-pillar handycap.

Exceptions: golding licenses/special events.... or everything other takes more than 100% from me. But no A-spec or hot lapping.

Have you ever driven a car with two cockpits? Your free to have your opinion, just don't rubbish someone else's, subtle as your attempt maybe.....

According to you, another steering wheel situated in front of the TV would somehow be more immersive?

Where did I state I play the game with a wheel? I use a DS3 and I sit cross legged on the floor, therefore, for me, I have no issue with seeing a steering wheel on the screen in front of me.

i use bumper for racing but when im drifting i switch to chase, thing is ive found i only really use bumper cam on gt games all others i use a chase view.

Mods, could we PLEASE have a sticky that says once and for all:

'Bumper cam' is NOT on the bumper.
(it has been demonstrated many time that bumper cam is exactly the same height as cockpit cam)

Bumper cam is cockpit cam with an invisible car....

There's NO 'Hood Cam'... it's a ROOF cam.

'Cockpit cam' is the only cam that is actually what it says it is

Mind you, how anyone finds 'invisible car' cam either realistic or 'sim'-like beats the hell out of me. Where's the hood/bonnet? How can you judge apexes when you can't even SEE the car (and don't fob me off with 'well, it's sort of where the edges of the speedo and tach are')?

You want to see how GT5's 'invisible car cam' should be... It's Shift's 'Hood cam', which actually has a hood! It is the view you get when you look out of the windshield (the windshield is your TV).

I am amazed that this same disinformation gets repeated over and over here.

THERE IS NO BUMPER CAM

Please, mods...

I use the bumper can as I can hit the apex much easier that way. Also the reaction of the car is more dramatic on bumper cam so I can correct and over or under steer.

Here's a video from Forza that explains that.

Hope GT5 will include that, but yeah, I don't use bumper cam. I prefer the roof cam as I feel more comfortable seeing where I'm going. If GT5p's cockpit view was like that, I'd be on cockpit view most of the time!

It is hood cam imo. Just like looking out of a windshield not downwards. Imo anyway.

Cockpit view is for noobs who like the feeling of being in the car and pretend to cruise around and do burn outs.

The visibility is extremely poor and unrealistic, next time you are in a car have a look for yourself. Do you really see the same view?

With bumper cam you get a greater sense of what is happening with the car in terms of pitch/roll and so on.

hood/roof > bumper

Cockpit cam only works realistically if you sit close to your screen, ie two or three feet away. Any further away and you might as well be sitting in the car's back seats or boot/trunk.

I disagree. I dont notice the bonnet/hood when driving. I look out out and see pretty much what I see in "bumper cam"(I know, I know).

Now the fob off; You really can use the edges of the dials as a reference for the cars position. I find it much more accurate than when in cockpit cam. I do find that cockpit cam is more realistic though. I use it sometimes when theres no pressure, but I just can't go as fast.

I race cockpit cam in the PC sims like IRacing, GT Legends, GTR2, Rfactor etc but for some reason GT5 feels un attached and strange.

I put it down to lack of movement and feel + bad Field of View.

In GT5 i race with the roof cam, as I find bumper cam to move around way to much and also makes it harder to see above cars when you are following them.

I have used "Bumper" view since GT1 and is still my choice of view in all racing games, I have tried the other views but felt the "roof" view to be too high for my taste and the "in-car" view way too restrictive and as some have said disconnected. I will every so often use the in-car view for fun and to have a look at the well crafted interiors PD have done but after the novelty of a few laps then it's back to bumper view.

I totally agree.

I stay away from cars that have roof cam, but can't see the hood.

Cockpit view is the best because it's the most realistic. No one drives a car in real life with an invisible dashboard and steering wheel. For the narrower field of view, meh the sexy eye candy makes up for it. When I drive standard cars I use the third person chase camera.

You can go into the Quick Options and adjsut the zoom in cockpit. However, this doesn't change the field of view, sadly.

I prefer where you can see the front of the car in the view. I think it's called hoodcam?
Bumper cam is only good for trying to fake a sense of speed and to drown out THAT ANNOYING WHINE FROM A CUSTOM TRANSMISSION!

"Hoodcam" gives me a reference as to where my car's at, so I can drive closer to other car without colliding.

We have been driving GT5 on six meter projector screen and when you are sitting cca 4m off the projecting screen then GT5 in cockpit view feels the same as in real life. No matter how big your TV is, it can't replicate this marvel. You can actually see the road hundreds of meters in front of you and yet you can read all the dials clearly.

Ah, the irony. I wasn't convinced about "bumper cam" as it's always felt lower than cockpit view, so I went to test it. To do this I parked up against an advertising barrier, put the handbrake on and switched views. This would allow me to tell for sure whether the views were at the same height.

Sure enough, I found that you were right - "bumper cam" and cockpit view are at exactly the same height, only with different depth of field. Amazing. And then I switched to your "roof cam", and sure enough, that's at the same height as well.

Seems you're spreading misinformation as well.
