Williams FW38 launch

Nothing of interest to shout about! The rear wing end plates look like they have some pretty aggressive cuts in them, but at first glance it appears they should have called it the FW37B rather than the FW38....

Am I the only one who's struggling to spot any differences?
No, the internet noticed similarities between the 37 and 38, too. Williams say that they have been focusing on the car's performance in low-speed corners, which might explain the lack of radical changes.

Why fix something that ain't broke. The rules have hardly changed this year, and they're near the front, so they may as well focus on fixing the bits they know are not as good as everyone else.

Yeah, they could have started from scratch and brought a completely new car, but ended up at the back of the grid.

Good point. The rules are changing dramatically next year so all the cars will look majorly different then.

It's just that I've always been able to tell subtle changes from every season but this one looks identical so far. Perhaps when the TV cameras pick it up on track I'll be able to spot them.

It's normal for teams to have simplified aero on their launch cars in most years. This year seems particularly paranoid in terms of last-minute exposure of development, I expect that the car which rolls out at the first test will look a bit fancier.

Still, I've been wrong before... :D

Autosport
again bears the iconic blue, red and white stripes that have become synonymous with the team over the past two seasons.

Shut up. Two seasons is not long enough for a livery to become iconic. Although the Williams liveries do stand out in the sea of average amongst the rest of the field.

Instead of making the Martini banding bigger and more prominent they have gone the opposite direction and made it even thinner at the front :yuck: Now it just an all white car that's got some coloured tape wrapped around its nose. It's pretty much the same as last years but somehow worse!

It should be something like this....

After the first year with a small coverage I assumed Martini weren't paying enough for that sort of coverage.

Bit Simple to take a picture from pre season last year the best would be one from Abu Dahbi or Brazil.

This is what the FW37 looked like in it's final spec at Abu Dahbi, as you can see the main changes you saw where already on the car last year.

The biggest Change I can see is the front Wing, good for Williams that this is Black as the change is pretty significant.

Not a good comparison, any time a new car is launched it's best to compare it to the last outing of the former iteration. So this is more in line with a comparison than the launch of the F37.

@mustafur had plenty of pictures to show the cars are the same at this point, exterior wise.
So the only differences are probably suspension wise and the under-tray and some slight revisions to the rear wing.

Good thing for me I didnt spend my time trying to find pictures to compare then. I just saw it on Twitter and dropped it into the thread just for the hell of it.

Wake me up when they get to Melbourne and the real cars show up.

Eh it's the real car, in the sense that even what we see in Melbourne wont be lasting. Also I just noticed the side pod shape is completely different between the two cars. And the nose may be higher to allow for more flow underneath the car at the front.

Yeah I was hoping that everybody would go to the Mercedes/Lotus (Renault) nose after last season.

Why? The nose is proven and works just as well as the Mercedes solution. You basically have a crash structure (broken one- pronged fork bit) and divides the flow of air as it goes toward the barge board. Thus allowing for critical front end aero that gets pushed toward the veins underneath the driver and around the the side pods. It's the entire idea of what needs to happen up front to get critical aero started for the car to be fast. Which is why Ferrari have adopted it as well rather than the long low noses with little gap that we saw last year or even the year before, with the elephant trunk.

I'm not saying "I hate it and it should go away forever since it's ugly". Do I like it? Not entirely, it's not all that pretty, and some of that type of nose are better than others (Honda and Sauber had a better look), but I understand the reasons for it. The long noses (Ferrari and Sauber v1) were worse, so it's good that those are gone. Again, I'm fine with this nose, but I just prefer the Mercedes/Lotus nose since it's cleaner looking.

Well sometimes aero isnt pretty it's just what works. Many of the cars from the late 00s were ugly with all the stupid tusks and winglets and what not, but it worked. Also I find these better than the platypus front ends. I'm just informing you that there is a method to the madness, I don't like the Ferrari, Williams, Sauber nose either but it works and sadly that's all that matters.

Nah I understand, I mean, we've seen this before over the year's (don't forget the biplane front wings  ). Though 2013 did have the best looking cars. :P
