Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: Grand Taurus

After a short delay this morning there’s a new Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial, as the global hotlap event doubles-up on the racing car categories.

It’s a pretty familiar combination as this week’s challenge combines the most-commonly used Gr.3 category and one of the real-world circuits that often features in GT7 multiplayer events: the Red Bull Ring.

As such you should know your way around by now, so this one is a matter of selecting the Gr.3 car you wish — all are available this week, though it’s looking like the Toyota Supra Racing Concept is the popular choice among a good chunk of the leaderboard right now — and making sure it has the appropriate Racing Medium tires fitted. Of course you can also borrow a vehicle, which will be shod correctly.

With it being such a familiar combo, we’re expecting that people will be getting up to speed pretty quickly. That means that we don’t expect the early world record — currently a 1:29.238 — to fall all that much over the next 14 days, and the gold target time is likely to remain pretty static too.

At present you’re going to need a 1:31.922 for that, and we’d say that you should aim for a 31.5 to be on the safe side. As there’s two weeks for you to set your time, we’ll re-assess that next week.

With the special event now concluded we’re back down to the regular two-event format and last week’s Gr.1 Le Mans challenge is the one that’s still on the board.

The quickest players in the world have been making it as difficult as possible to snatch a gold, but times are settling relatively close to where we’d expected, and the majority are still using the Toyota GR010.

Currently the world record is a 3:05.807, which places that gold target at 3:11.381, but there’s still a week remaining so you might want to be getting close to a 3:11-flat if you want the 2,000,000cr reward.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving, probably, at 0700 UTC on Thursday June 19.
