GT5 “GameStop Edition” Packaging Reveals Back of Case

(Don’t panic – the game will not be sold with this cover in GameStop stores.)

When Joey Logano went up against Kazunori Yamauchi in GT5 at the private GameStop manager convention, everyone in attendance won a free copy of the game. While Sony (obviously) wasn’t able to just hand it over yet, they did provide attendees with empty Blu-Ray cases sporting special-edition box art for Logano and Yamauchi to sign. This has, interestingly, provided us with the first look at the back of the game’s case, which showcases 2005 Gran Turismo Award winner Stephen Papadakis’ Honda S2000.

Keep in mind the rear box art can and and probably will be change before release, but that doesn’t make it any less cool to see right now. Thanks to Zonda_Guy for sharing!

It listed NETWORK up to 18 players. Which in turn means a 3×3 set can be run. ( 3 Screens and 3 PS 3 Units) I CAN’T WAIT!!!!

    1. Zuel

I also like the race lobby feature, race against friends or start a nice Championship racing division. That’s what I’ll do start a Championship Racing Division. Open Mic as well nice.

    1. Gamer GT5

I don’t think that weather is going to be mentioned until TGS comes. Which is going to be 09/16/10. Which is next week. It’s a three day event.

  2. Alex N.

For everyone to read before commenting:
Kazunori said that there would be no livery editor.
I also emphasize that it says 16 cars online, I say this because some people were saying it would only be 8 or 12.

    1. Chad.D

it will be 16, yes, except on smaller tracks i assume, because on Eiger Nordwand in prologue, at least on single player, was always 12 cars, but every other track was 16, so year, i just think its the smaller tracks with 12 cars, maybe they changed it, but it was something i noticed

  3. steve_123

it says over 1000 exotic cars to customize (Paint any1 ??) also drift, rally, Nascar what about F1 ? ino codemasters are making F1 2010 but surly theres the F1 Ferrari F2007 ?? owell still cant wait, :-)

  4. Tim

Looked at this and a few things stand out

    1. the rear shot clearly states Firmware 3.31 or above , we are at 3.42 now.

    2. there is no mention of Move requirement.

    1. LoneWanderer

It’s most likely for those who prefer using the PSJailbreak and don’t wish to update.

Sony’s little way of forcing people to stop using it may work.

  5. autofusion

Crap! The only Target store I have around town, Warner Robins, has a PS3 kiosk where it’s completely turned off and the controller removed!

Hello, guys i´m from germany and i want to buy the special edition, but on amazon.de i can´t buy the special version yet, but on the amazon.uk i can buy it. So i want to ask if someone knows if the Spec. Edit. will be in german amazon too?? I do want to have a edition with german language but not with english cover or eng. guidance. Thanks !

  7. Drogahnus

Soo…KY said probably no livery editor, yet it says “customize, race, and upgrade” with an S2000 loaded on livery. Hmmm..

    1. LoneWanderer

I think the Mild Language is for online purposes. I guarantee people will use their horns as a means of swearing when they overtake an opponent.

  8. su

I would say there will be many different boxes, some region specific, USA will get the nascar as it is in the pictures provided, Europe will get a Mercedes, and Australia will get some Japanese car, as no Australian cars are in gt5 I would dare say.

If we had a car list we would know

  9. BroncosXR8

I noticed that it is also missing the ‘move’ icon from that list along with the absence of the eyetoy headtracking.

    1. iLex

      ahh, didn’t know that.

And now i messed up myself on the below post, which was a reply to my own post…
But I’m just bad at internet :)

  10. NBH

The word customise could just mean adding a spoiler and picking some wheels like in other GT games.

Like people have said it doesn’t mention lots of features we know are going to be in the game such as head tracking, karts, super GT so I’m pretty sure this will change.

My concern about this image is that it says rally and not WRC which suggests to me that if is just rally cars on GT rally stages instead of a proper WRC championship but hopefully that will change.

    1. Damo

I have exactly the same worry as you… it seems iffy that they’ve printed NASCAR but not WRC on the cover, despite the fact that the inclusion of both of these series and the licenses was revealed at the same time! Doess PD have an up-to-date license for WRC now that an official WRC game is going to be released?… I hope so, but we can only sit back and wait!

    2. Sigmaviper11

I wouldn’t get my hopes too high, for licensed rally tracks. But I wouldn’t dismiss it either. Though both old GT rally tracks and newer licensed rally tracks would be appreciated.

I wonder if they’d be willing to include the full course of Pikes peak.

  11. Manatee_Mat

Ok I may just be being stupid but has anyone else noticed how the back of the box says “choose over a 1000 of the worlds most exotic imports, muscle cars and performance supercars to customize, race and upgrade.” That suggest to me a livery editor of some kind

    1. iLex

Don’t want to ruin the fun, but here goes: It can also just mean we get to change rims, but a carbon hood on and grace the back of the car with a huge wing.
I’ll join you in hoping for the editor though.

    2. Bernd

A livery-editor hasn’t been confirmed so far, but we’re only 8 days away from TGS, where the last secrets will be revealed :-)

    3. Sigmaviper11

You’re not being stupid, but I don’t see that big of a leap either. It could mean a livery editor though that is unlikely. It could also mean body kits and the usual performance modding. Much like Kaz its pretty damn ambiguous.

    4. LoneWanderer

      @Gulyo

I’ve tried Forza’s livery editor and all I can say is that it takes a lot of work to create one. I like to drive my cars without fancy stickers.

  12. DaveTheStalker

Gamer, im not trying to challenge you. I am voicing my concern. Yes the Tuned 370Z was improved over GT5P. For me the test will be for the NASCAR Cup cars.

After going to my first NASCAR event weekend I have even higher hopes and expectations for PD to reasonably replicate those V8’s. I know it would be asking for a lot if PD was able to capture the uniqueness some of the engines have from team to team. There has not really been much evidence so far from videos or interviews that assure me that I’m not in store for another V8 let down.

    1. Gamer GT5

I’m not trying to challenge you either. I know what you mean about the sound problems. And yes I did hear some differences only with the race cars with the super GT cars. They sound more like the cars have been digitally edited. I’m not really a nascar fan nor a racing car fan. I’m just all about production cars and the f1 series. lol. I hope your hopes and expectations for your NASCAR comes true and for all the other people like you as well :)

    1. Corey

“This has, interestingly, provided us with the first look at the BACK of the game’s case, which showcases 2005 Gran Turismo Award winner Stephen Papadakis’ Honda S2000.”

  13. Ya momma

@ Gamer GT5 I know I’ve seen the videos, but I tweeter “GTPlanet” and asked them what they thought and their exact words where “it will be an improvement on prologue but not much” but I would recommend to anyone who hasn’t got a proper headset to give turtle beach a look.

    1. Gamer GT5

lol Yea that makes alot of since. The Turtle Beach PX21 headset that you mentioned I never heard of that type of headset. Perhaps i’ll give it a try. Thanks for mentioning about that headset!

  14. Dahlsim

This is cool, even if it doesn’t look like the definitive case. No mention of head tracking, course editor, karting, photomode, new physics, or weather effects…

And i don’t think that this phrase : “Expand the GT experience online for a few quick races” will be on the final case. No editor in the world says “a few”, they’ll always say “a lot” even if there are only 3 or 4 elements !

    1. FonzdaiiGT

hahaha that’s exactly what I was thinking, who will try to sell a product and say “a few”, ppl always want more! lol

  15. DaveTheStalker

Gamer, are you new to the GT series? “Engine sounds” have historically been the weak link for Gran Turismo. V8’s should not sound like a V6 or a vacuum cleaner.

    1. Gamer GT5

If you look at the making of GT prologue. It shows the cars engine’s being recorded with different microphones. Unless their microphones sucks and doesn’t result in good quality. Which that wouldn’t make any since that the fact they’re putting over 60 million in this game and on the e3 2010 trailer they’re using Protools which is one of the top digital audio workstation which wouldn’t be a problem with engine sounds. And anyways the 370z engine sound that was in the time trial was very excellent. That’s what matters

And no i’m not new to the GT series.

    2. iLex

I didn’t see the discussion continue here before I posted a reply to your other comment (why aren’t people using the very handy ‘reply’ link?)
But again: good recordings don’t make a good in game engine sound on their own.

    3. JTSnooks

From all of the videos I’ve seen, the way they record the sound is just to have the car in neutral and have someone hold the engine at different rpm. The problem is that an engine at 5000rpm under load at WOT sounds completely different than an engine at 5000rpm in neutral at 25% throttle. In order to fix the sounds of the ~800 standard cars, they’d have to re-record every one of them on some type of dyno or rolling road, or attach the microphones to the car as it went down a drag strip or something.

    4. FonzdaiiGT

JTsnooks, if you thought about it, don’t you think they wouldve thought about that too? In fact i’m sure they did even better than that. The latest GT5 trailer, the one where Seb Vettel speaks at some point, has EXCELLENT sounds, you can hear all sorts of deep exhausts and all! I will bet whatever you want that GT5 is gonna be the game that will change everything for Playstation. People will buy it by the millions. It will be game of the year, and millions of people have been waiting for this game to buy a playstation!

    5. JTSnooks

Don’t ask me why they didn’t think about it, I’m just telling you what I’ve seen in the past. They would sit outside, put a microphone over the hood and one behind the car, and rev it up in neutral under no load. Listen to most of the cars in GT4, especially a lot of the V8s and muscle cars, and they sound just like a car would if you gave it a lighthearted easy rev sitting in your driveway. I assume that for GT5:P and GT5 they’ve gotten access to a dyno to strap the cars to, but unfortunately that doesn’t address the “upconverted” cars from the older games unless they re-recorded all 800+ of them.

  16. Gamer GT5

The s2000 in the back cover looks awesome! Is it the amuse s2000 GT1 turbo from prologue or is that an example of an customizable s2000 car?

    1. James

Then read it again because you obviously didn’t pay attention. It says in the article what the Honda S2000 on the cover is an example of.

    2. Topsu

Then why are you not understanding this:

“which showcases 2005 Gran Turismo Award winner Stephen Papadakis’ Honda S2000.”

    3. Gamer GT5

How many times do I have to repeat myself? I said I read it. And @Topsu yea i already know about the 2005 GT award winner. I just didn’t feel like explaining myself. When I think of it y’all trying to help me out and thanks i appreciate it alot! But wow I feel like i’m in school again.

    1. Gulyo

Why should be bad ??? Because the GT sounds are tradicionally soooo artificial sh*t !!!
Forget Forza 3 sounds !!! THAT would be big suprise !!!

    2. iLex

Can we please stop with the Fanboyism?

@ Gamer GT5: Getting a realistic engine sound is not as easy as recording it and then replaying it in the game. Since the sound of an engine is changed over time by the input from the gamer, unlike for example the sound of a gun firing, PD will need a good game engine (software) to make the sound realistic. A very good recorded engine sound can become artificial sounding when put through a bad game engine.
And yes, traditionally the GT sounds are not as good as those of some of it’s rivals. Then again some games exaggerate the engine sounds to make them sound cool (and not so much realistic).

    3. Gulyo

“And yes, traditionally the GT sounds are not as good as those of some of it’s rivals.” >>> that’s the point and my question too : WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ????????????????
So rich and famous companies like PD or Sony how can allow this ? The good sounding ( engine, gearbox, differential, chassis ) is the basis of a good simulator game … but I stop now :)

    4. iLex

I know that was your point :)

Ofcourse nobody can answer that question except for people at PD.
It’s safe to assume PD are trying to make the cars sound good, but clearly something is keeping them from achieving that (although some cars do sound very nice).
My best guess is that it’s due to limitations in their game engine, as they do record a lot of the sounds. It can also be related to memory. The PS3 doesn’t have a lot of memory and with high res textures and lots of other things loaded there might not be enough space for the engine sounds.
Note that you’ll need a lot of different sounds to make an engine sound realistic.

    5. FonzdaiiGT

I really think people over exaggerate when it comes to sound. Yes early gt games had bad sound but then again that was the ps2. With prologue, it’s really not that bad except maybe at very high revs, but i mean the sound does change depending what view you’re using and I think that’s the most important. If you drive a front engine car and play in 3rd person you will hear less engine sound than if you were playing with a mid-engine car, and that’s the kind of thing i want in gt anyways.

    6. Gamer GT5

@ iLex Thanks for your comment.

So basically you’re saying that the engine sounds can possibly take away the full quality of the game. That probably makes since because in some of Kaz interviews he mentioned about GT5 is going beyond ps3’s capabilities. And the fact that Day/Night weather can take away the quality too. Thats probably the reason they only have Day/Night transition in some levels not all. But who knows.

    7. Tenacious D

Also, keep in mind that GT5 will have to hold sounds for up to 16 cars in memory at once. And keep in mind that each car will have a LOT of sounds associated with it: engine revs at a number of RPM points, transmission samples at the same rev points, turbo and supercharger samples if they have them, backfire, tire squeals… there are a LOT of audio samples used in GT5. Multiply all that by 16. And as said above, the PS3 doesn’t have 4gb of ram like my PC does. Mind blowing graphics, impeccable car models – even Standard, realistic physics, huge detailed racing areas, multichannel audio and music… all this eats up ram. When it all has to fit in a cramped ram area, sometimes you have to compromise something.

I recently watched a video of an iRacing session, and I’ll have to say, it made GT2 sound good!

    1. fade

LAN. If it doesn’t have Lan, don’t you will still be able to have a “Lan”. Confused?

Well, lets take Starcraft 2. It doesn’t have Lan mode, people cried, people moaned, people petitioned. But if they got together and hooked all their machines up to a router, then can all connect to the internet at the same time and play together in a custom game together if they really want to. The difference between doing this and having a traditional “lan” is it requires an internet connection, but where are you having a get together that doesn’t have an internet connection?

    2. tyl0r_r

@ fade: yeah, that’s great if you have the best connection on the planet. otherwise you’ve got a room of 10 guys sharing the bandwidth of 1 connection for 10 computers doing online gaming (bandwidth heavy task). Sound fun to you now?

  17. GTbyPlaystation

The back of the case looks awesome!
    Over 1000 cars
    Road, rally and drift
    1-16 Network Players
This is the American case I assume, so most likely the Australian version will be different.

  18. bighap

I pre-ordered 2 collectors editions with the intention of canceling one at some point. One from GameStop and one from Amazon. This just made my decision that much easier if this is the cover you get with the collectors edition. Goodbye GameStop pre-order.

    1. Mr Frappy

bighap, the game will obviously not sell with a GameStop specific cover. Also, as the front cover is so obviously made up, I wouldn’t read too much into the back cover either.

Besides, even if it did ship with GameStop on the front, so what? The game is the same no matter what version you buy.

    2. FonzdaiiGT

Well, don’t you get different bonus cars depending where you pre-order from?

Also, are those cars already included in the game, but some ppl would simply have them b4 because they pre-ordered?

What about GT5P cars, are they still gonna let us import cars or that hasn’t been confirmed yet?

    3. GTracerRens

I thought that was already confirmed.. Or well, I really hope it is in there. I’ve read that you’ll be able to import your cars from the Prologue to the Arcade menu in GT5. But only the ARCADE and that’s enough for me. Can’t wait to drive my cars on the Nordschleife. :D I’ve just pre-ordered a collectors edition for 99 euros. I think it’s too expensive but in The Netherlands I couldn’t find any other places to order from. :(

    1. Squozen

Fred, try reading the article text again. They got the box art, the game will be delivered later as it’s not finished yet.

    1. Mikem

This just looks like the cardboard sleve that the Blueray case slips over if anything it will be the normal game under that. And not the CE or maby just a promo for them ONLY
