PlayStation 4 Slim Costs $299, Hits Shelves on September 15th

The slimmer PS4 console coming to you in less than a week.

A slimmer, more power-efficient redesign of today’s readily-available PlayStation 4 was first speculated on earlier in the year when Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong spoke with the Wall Street Journal. Damian suggested the company would introduce the model, and with the company’s noted history of doing so previously, there was little doubt to be had.

Gaining steam, as rumors often do, the speculation soon became hard evidence when Twitter user shortman82 secured, unboxed, and displayed the revised model that was acquired through UK classified listings site Gumtree.

At today’s PlayStation Meeting, Andrew House made it official by revealing the slimmed-down console. The new ‘standard’ model moving forward, the slimmer PS4 packs all of the same hardware components of the original, allowing new buyers to jump in and experience the entirety of the currently available game library without any compromise.

For those looking forward to PlayStation VR releasing next month, the PS4 Slim will be an attractive option for those that haven’t made the jump to the current generation of gaming consoles.

The slimmer model will stand alongside the upcoming PS4 Pro when it releases later this year, but worry not as the slim won’t be superseded by the Pro; both will co-exist and offer the same experiences.

PlayStation 4 Slim releases next week Thursday, September 15th for $299 and will compete with Microsoft’s own slimmed-down console, the Xbox One S.

Ugliness. At $399, Pro is the new Standard. This is sub par. Pro is essentially a PS4 Update, and slim is a cutback.

With no Digital Optical output the PS4 slim is not really an option for me unless I want to also buy a new receiver to go along with it.
