Gran Turismo 5 Delayed in Russia, Retailers Halt Pre-Orders

**NOTICE**

DO NOT PANIC.  AS OF WRITING, NO EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THIS DELAY WILL APPLY TO OTHER COUNTRIES OR REGIONS.

A Russian gaming site raised eyebrows yesterday when it claimed to have a copy of a message from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe sent to Russian retailers. Via Google Translator:

“For technical reasons, the world premiere of Gran Turismo 5, the most anticipated release on the PlayStation 3 from Polyphony Digital, is transferred to several weeks. Running or remain in November (the last number), or appear on store shelves in early December 2010. Transferring As for all sku including bundles GT5 PlayStation 3. We understand that the way the game Gran Turismo 5 – one of the most important events in the gaming industry in 2010, so we work hard as soon as possible to provide accurate information regarding the start of sales. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Many in our forums – including myself – remained understandably skeptical of this source. However, the situation has now changed, as prominent Russian online retailers have responded by changing release dates, posting notices to their web sites, and halting pre-orders of all editions of the game.

Here is a Google translation of the notice posted to Russian electronics retailer 1C: Interest’s web site. Clicking on the links to the individual products from the link above also reveals more notices of a delay. (Learn more about the company here.)

Due to the fact that the world premiere of Gran Turismo 5 for technical reasons postponed for several weeks regarding the previously announced release date (03/11/2010), the we’ll stop collecting pre-orders for all editions of this game for the Playstation 3. […] Anyone who has designed the pre-order will get the game after its official release. As soon as you know the exact release date, we will post the information on this site. Follow our news.

Another Russian retailer, VideoIGR, has also moved their suggested release date to November 30th.

As mentioned in the notice at the top, there is no other information to suggest this delay will spread to the rest of Europe, North America, or Japan. SCEE has not made any formal public announcements and other launch events and promotions are scheduled as normal. Of course, I will be keeping a close eye on this and will let you know of any further developments.

Very ominous that they dont say what the problem is and the dont instantly confirm a new release date. ‘Holiday season’ means nothing.

I sincerely hope this isnt a repeat of a game called Driver 3 where it was delayed so many times that it got slated like hell upon release for not being perfect.

In all honesty Sony have been vague with the release date until now on purpose, but once it was confirmed to be 2nd or 3rd of Nov it was considered to be set in stone.

  2. Brunol

In Brazil the official release date is November 2nd, mainly because there won´t be any translation, I guess.
They think that if you are wealthy enough to buy a PS3 and the game, as both are almost twice as expensive as in the US, you´ll probably be capable of reading english.

  3. Ps3fanboy

I just checked the danish playstation site , nothing have changed , it says 5th nov.

All though i ordered it from a danish site where it said 3rd nov. But who cares about 2 days – Let’s see if this delay is true. But personally i think the game have been finished for quite some time , they just spend this last time , playing it , finding bugs , correting small things.

I can understand if its a langauge barrier , i mean russian is quite special. – Just give them an english copy!

  4. boblikepie

You never know they mightn’t be able to print enough copies to meet the pre-orders in other regions and Russia might have drawn the short straw

  5. marchy

No big deal. I am sure someone has already pointed out, PS3 games are not region-locked so the Russians can just order from any European web stores.

    1. CorteX

No, it’s not a joke. Everyone should get ready for yet another substantial delay. I can’t believe it… This game better be much better than my already high expectations.

  6. terminator363

There is no point of a delay, instead release it, then patch out the stuff that was supposed to be in. It’s much better option, people will be happy they get their game, company will be happy; no delays. Problem solved!

    1. - Ice of SZRT -

Not everything can be fixed/changed with a patch. The game would have to be created with the ability to make certain changes during its production phase.

  7. scotlandthistle

yes do not panic but does anybody else see that storm on the horizon. lets hope nothing impeeds it’s release.

  8. TJ31

Hmm, it was my 2nd post on gtplanet. >_> Thx for saying thx to me. =)

    Ok, so what to add.
    @Tim
Yeah, our language a bit complicated, but i doubt that’s the problem. I mean, it’s a racing game after all, not RPG with long and complicated sentences, which may require a hard work to save the meaning of the story etc.

Also, there already was a post on forums with a link to a playstationru twitter post.
    http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4051747#post4051747
No any new info since then yet.
But that either means, that there won’t be a delay in russia or there will the same delay for all (or EU only) versions.

    1. DaveS1138

It may not be a RPG but if like other GT games it has a lengthy text description for wach and every car…….and we know there are 1000+ cars in the game……then that is one hell of alot of translation work that needs to be done.

  9. Tim

Just found out from another source on this it is a translation and distribution issue , in other words the translation is not finished. Russian is a complex language so i am not surprised by this in the slightest.

  10. ChunKie

What’s with all the doom & gloom? I bet it’s the manuals and APEX books that have some translation issue, or it can simply be a shipping issue. Let’s not go around crying like it’s the end of the world without any firm evidence that it’s going to be a global delay.

  11. AGNT009

I saw this coming. I have a grave fear the US will get our bad news shortly. Its because effing Kaz kept putting in stuff up until the last possible day, and then when they said, ok, times up, time to ship it, he said, “But wait, I havnt playtested it yet for bugs” “Um you didnt do WHAT!! Damn you Kaz, you realize what you are doing to us? Get the word out, but release the bad news to US and UK last, they will take this the hardest”

    Hopefully that scenario is wrong.

More likely is that they took a few extra days to program, and they realized they wouldnt get their quota of games out for the whole world, so they are shipping to Japan, UK, and US first, of what units they can get out in time for Nov 2, and Russia and the like are at the bottom of the pecking order. Sorry Ruskies. But they know if they delay this game one more time in the US, after being this close to release, much shame will be on them. And I guess they’d chose Russian shame and disappointment over American shame, their biggest cash cow.

  12. Ps3fanboy

My guess is the scandinavian – will get an english version – Would be the easyest by far , i mean we all talk it here.

Hopefully they won’t delay us, ( fingers crossed )

  13. pasigiri

21 days out and Sony/PD might delay GT5. Bit of advice … ahem … DO NOT DELAY THIS GAME ANYMORE!!! People have been talking trash about how long this game has already taken to come out. I understand things take time and I’m getting the game regardless, but respect in the industry can grow weary. I’m a software developer myself and I understand quality vs. timely release. It’s tough, but sometimes you’ve got to back away from the keyboard. You can only please so many and get so close to perfection.

  14. JarreauGTP

And also at the show at belgium they said that the release date is still november 3rd so i guess holland will get it november 3rd also. And in these two countries they do talk english but i cannot say the same thing about germany because i dont know it yet.

    1. iLex

Dutch retailer’s sites still say november 3rd… one of them also says that GT5 will have ‘over 150 cars’, which, althought technically true, doesn’t seem to be the best marketing statement.

  15. LeftyWright69

Well maybe PD was having trouble getting the Physics right so that the driving experience of the Niva and Kalina is something that will put them at the top of the “What car are you going to get first” list ………lol

  16. ...hmmm

This delay might be tied to fact, that some countries ain’t ‘up to par’ when it comes ask about understanding English… so they need version by their own language, and in this case, with alphabetics.

Scandinavians dont need to worry if that’s the case… we anyway dont have our ‘own’ versions I suppose. (and hope)

  17. Sigmaviper11

I remember when he learned his lesson with GT2 that he wouldn’t again release an incomplete game.

But I agree that they may simply be focusing more on the US Europe Japan and Australia and are therefore dedicating their resources. Hopefully this delay stays contained in Russia, Specially since all other scheduled launch party’s and events are remaining on schedule. I’m pretty sure its a local thing.

  18. Hawar

Why do they have say rubbish like “Technical Reasons”? Can’t they just tell us what’s going on?

Everyone is going to buy this game, there’s no reason hold information like this back.

  19. Detroitbb

I don’t hold a lot of stock in the theory that it might be a localization/translation issue (that part would have been completed already).

It’s more likely that they are just expecting stronger sales in other markets (EU/NA/JP/etc.) and wish to direct Blu-Ray burning capacity to those versions.

    1. Maxiboy

I took a WEEK off work. I spent $1000 on a PS3 when they launched for GTHD and im taking some time off work for a game that I have been been waiting years and years AND years for. Its not sad if its what you enjoy, and I have literally been playing the GT series since my gaming life began, so this game does mean quite a bit to me.

    2. Mike

      @Sick Face
Some people have actual full-time jobs with allowable paid vacations, you know.

Hell, I have a vacation cap…I can only bank so much time or I stop earning it. Might as well use a measly 10 hours on something I’ve been waiting years for.

  20. gunma36

Oh Oh…my spider-sense is tingling…I hope it’s not for a european GT5 delay…I am really scared, please Sony don’t do that again.

  21. Alex p.

What most people men with another delay, is, that the wait has been just too long now and that they couldn’t take anymore waiting.

    1. King Goeres

Fair enough, I don’t want a delay either since i’m off for a few days when GT5 is released..

However perfection takes time ;-) and I’m happy Kaz is a developer that doesn’t release products that aint done. (which is like 99% of the whole industry)

    2. iLex

The sad thing of delays like this is that they generally have nothing to do with perfection, but with somebody pressing a wrong button.

  22. King Goeres

Only been one delay, and it was for japan ONLY. Where on earth do people get the “another delay” thingy from???

    Enlighten me, please…

  23. Sasek

Maybe Russian version of GT5 needs more time to translate to their language, or a group that translates the game have a delay.

  24. Alex p.

Okays, so this was true after all. Think what you want, but I believe a delay for Europe and the USA is not so unlickely.

  25. King Goeres

Damn, I have this bad nagging feeling that the scandinavian region will get hit by the delaybat aswell..

    SAKE!!!

    1. snaketus

I really hope not, no one in scandinavia doesn’t need russian localization. Only thing we need is english translation of the game.

    1. tvensky

I think the problem is translation of the game from Japanise to Russian.. they even had problems to translate it to english properly.

    1. GoldUltima

If any of the Russians know another language, I’d say it’d be a good idea to import if they wanna get at it early. Just get the UK version or something.

    2. HugoStiglitz_420

@LiMe LOL nice, I’m really glad someone got the reference lol you think Fedor will make a comeback?

    3. tvensky

I live in Latvia, it have borders with russia, they can still get the normal english version, and any russian who is playing ps3 just have to know english!
