Gran Turismo 5 in Times Square for Honda CR-Z Promo Event, September 23

Sony’s teaming up with Honda in a cross-promotion of GT5 and the new CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe in New York City’s Times Square this Thursday, September 23rd, from 10am to 6pm. You can read the official announcement for everything Honda has planned at the event, but here’s the most important thing to know: GT5 will be playable in 3D “racing sleds” all day long. The CR-Z will be featured in this demo, obviously, and it will be interesting to see which courses they’ll have available.

Let’s not forget that Times Square was introduced to the series in GT4, as you can see in the video below. If the New York track is going to make a return in GT5, would there be a better place to reveal it? We’ll find out tomorrow. If you are going to this event, please let me know – I’ll have a close eye on tomorrow’s events and will keep the blog updated with any new media as soon as it hits the web. Thanks to all who sent this in!

Took a detour to the event. :) It was nice to see a crowd at the GT booth, even though it meant I would not get around to trying things out. Nice setups with 3D TV’s and 3D mode enabled. The track in use was the HSR set at 2 laps. The cockpits looked nice, simple, but nice. I’d take such a setup for my home. ;-) Could not really tell how good it all looked since we could not get close and the sunlight & shade was a bit much for my camera phone.

  2. occasionalracer

London is defenitely a hard one for clean overtaking, it’s almost impossible if the overtaken person doesn’t give in a bit (unless a mistake is made)

    1. brainfade

@Honda-Crz he probably hasn’t, judging by his comments he’s either a poorly supervised kid or a longtime sufferer of dementia

  3. bucketseat

Has anyone out there become more interested in a Honda CR-Z hybrid sports coupe because of what they saw in the NY demo?
It’s interesting how the marketing types like to talk about numbers of ‘impressions’ but none like to link those numbers with sales…
All that said, GT5 is becoming a nice ‘vehicle’ for promotions and I’ve got to admit that driving the wide variety in the game has made me more open to different models in the real world.
One problem is that my wife doesn’t like to be in the car with me when I go into ‘Gran Turismo’ mode. Somehow I wish we could turn off the ‘damage modeling’ in the real world :)!

  4. nismofreak

I was at the event. There were three machines for the CR-Z hybrid. Of the other three that were there, only one was working by the time I was up to play. On that other machine was the SLS. Guess which one I played.

The damage modeling was not turned on but even without that, you can feel the difference from Prologue to this. All the wheels were GT wheels.

    1. Steph290

Five were working at the start 10:30ish. Then four, then three, the second to last being the SLS. Also, the damage modeling was turned on for the CR-Z’s, but I watched as one person rode the wall for almost an entire lap before the car even got a dent.

  5. Bankai123

Now that Steph290 has experienced the event first hand then I’m not even gonna go near it. It does sound very disappointing indeed. November 2nd isn’t too far off anyway.

  6. marchy

The Hong Kong track would need a MASSIVE overhaul if it is to be included in GT5. In the real world, The starting grid section is now above an underground train station with associate buildings along the way, the seaside shopping mall is being demolished, the historic police station to the left of the Peninsula Hotel is now a new modern hotel, and virtually all the neon signs along Canton Road and Nathan Road need to be updated.

  7. Steph290

Btw, demo courses were two laps, High Speed Ring and Tokyo in the CR-Z or if you are lucky the Mercedes SLS. Courses will change every hour or so, but no New York racetrack. Srry everyone.

  8. Steph290

Disappointing. The PD team is here with a 6 booth setup, but the equipment they are using must be the same used in Gamescom and TGS. Half of the Driving force GT wheels are worn and the washers holding them in place are sliding. I had to hold the wheel with one hand while steering with the other. No new tracks, although I did see one entitled “Route 7” which looked like an original creation. (PD team chooses ur course). If you are in Manhattan and just want to experience GT5 then I recommend skipping this event and going several blocks uptown to the Sony Store.

    1. Steph290

That’s what I would like to believe, but when they scrolled past it, it did not have any course info nor a colorful title like the others. So my assumption is it’s probably something they use to demonstrate the course editor. Still have hope tho!

  9. Thor

11:25 NY time. Anyone have eyes on the prize yet?

I agree with the consensus that many of the city courses in GT4 left something to be desired. NY and Seoul were my least favorite. But, as far as being narrow, well, that is what most real street courses are like. In fact, I think that’s one reason I didn’t like NY and Seoul because they are too wide! Real world street courses usually only have one or two good overtaking points and very, verylittle room for error. In this respect city courses like Opera Paris and London are better then NY and Seoul. Overall, I just appreciate the wide variety of tracks PD has always included and GT5 will, no doubt, have a great selection to choose from.

  10. Craigles

I think we should have the option of adjusting the brake ballance or turning the traction control on and off durring a race espiecialy for a circuit with fast and slow corners eg spa (if in it)

  11. smoke1485

Ok gokarts in paris does sound sweet, but do not put 16 audi r10 tdi’s out there when its only wide enough for 1. Citi div aria had some passing zones in it at least as well as costa di amalfi which rivals operas narrowness but at least they can be raced on

  12. smoke1485

Oh yeah opera paris too, what’s the point of a track so narrow that has no character, no room to race, and every turn has to be taken at 32mph? No thanks.

  13. Yui-San

I wish they would make a city course in Taipei. I would love to drive around the Taipei 101. Plus, there are tons of straights and roundabouts here in Taipei.

    1. bucketseat

They did explain that with their handling model they could even do motorcycles…they would seem to be more applicable to Taipei streets than cars :)

I do agree that PD should consider a track there, it would be interesting.

  14. tvensky

for me the interesting thing is, as a Honda owner, on the Honda’s web page I recently visited was a Honda CR-Z 3D model rotating, it was very similar to GT5 3D models. Now these news explains it :)

  15. Big Ron

The CRZ looks ok, but tyically Japan-style. The rear seems to have attitudes of the last Renault Megane-model.

Hopefully, New York is not in the field of implemented tracks. I always hated it. It was one of the best looking one, but definitely one of the worst track layouts I´ve ever seen. A row of 90 degree turn and one circle…..hell of boring.
They should more car about real race tracks of tracks like Trial Mountain or Deep Forest.

  16. jakenj9

Just reading the NY times. It says that GT5 will have more than 60 circuits. If you count all the circuits (not tracks ad they can be variations of a circuit) old and new it comes to 60 odd. plus or minus one or two. I for one think that all old circuits will make a comeback.

  17. grog

As someone who owns a crx (which I do love), the car that somewhat inspired the CRZ, I do not care for this car at all. Its not the hybrid part that turns me off, its the styling of it.
And why is it that visibility in new cars keeps diminishing, its making our cars need stupid blind spot detection gizmos. arg, I hate new cars.

    1. j8mie

Have to admit I was never a huge fan of New York but I do hope it makes it into the final game. Although a course tweak would be nice to get rid of some of those 90 degree turns.

Grog – I have at agree with you about the new CRZ. Hardly a looker when you compare it to the 1980’s CRX. You also make a good point about poor visibility generally in newer cars. I guess that’s because they are “stronger” and therefore more bulky so they have smaller windows.

  18. Eddie

I only live about 45 minutes away AND I have the day off from work tomorrow…

BUT its also the day F1 2010 releases and my playseat has been sitting for months…

    Decisions, decisions…

  19. GT5 rocks

This challenging street courses are good. I like London from GT5P. They should add more like this. By the way, is it true that they have every NASCAR race car? A PSN message sent to me said that.

    1. ChunKie

Who sent you that message??? So far we have seen and played with quite a few NASCAR cars from the videos and demos, but beyond that, nothing is confirmed.

  20. GT_Prologue5

Quit ripping intro city tracks, they are just as worthy to be in GT as a Nurburgring or Trial Mountian. Most complain because they are a challenge, isn’t that the point?

    1. Mr Frappy

They are a challenge because they are crap…mostly. Not all, but most just don’t provide a good racing experience. There is a reason why most F1 races are on tracks as opposed to road circuits.

    2. MSH

Apart from Nurburgring and Le Mans, I find the city tracks the most fun. Especially the narrow ones where it’s difficult to overtake. It adds to the racing feeling. On other circuits the overtaking is a bit too easy.

  21. robert

track id love to have seen but doubt i ever will was the 1 they used in the super prix around birmingham in the mid later 90s……certainly would be an interesting track to say the least

  22. Tek9[R]

If Red Rock counts as a city track then it is my favorte. I’ve been wating for it to make a comeback for a long time. I usualy learn to love the tracks ( and turns ) I start off hateing.

  23. terminator363

    LOL @ Bucketseat

I hated London, to short, to narrow, too slow, I want Paris, It was a ton of fun, but City tracks aren’t my thing at all, I want… N☻RBURGRING!

  24. terminator363

New York would be awesome to see in GT5! Even though I never liked it! Meh, I will still be a hell of a lot of fun to race it!!

  25. bucketseat

Very funny…buckethead instead of bucketseat. That made me smile. BTW BoBo in French is sort of a nickname for a dope. I’m sure that doesn’t apply to you. Also…if I’m your son you’re a freakin’ antique :).
    No hard feelings at all.

  26. McEntee28

Oh god. Please PD, dont have Seoul in there. Dont think i could ever drive that track again no matter how good it looks. But they have the indy gp track in, so they dont mind having rubbish tracks in it.

  27. ken_b

Would be cool to see an enhanced NY in gt5, and i have np with street courses. I agree with Hugo, London in gt5 is a blast! Speaking of road courses I’d like to see the long beach gran prix course. Better yet as long as I get my overnight delivery on 11/3, then we coo!! If ur in ny you have to go!

    1. bucketseat

      Best city courses:
      1- Seattle
      2- Tokyo
      3- Paris
      4- Hong Kong

New York doesn’t even come close to making the list.

    2. MSH

      1. Côte d’Azur (Monaco)
      2. Seattle
      3. Hong Kong (many challenging turns, I personally really like that track)

Citta di Aria was also awesome.

Your “reality” list hurts me on the inside.

But at least 14 days before it I’ll be playing fallout new vegas to occupy my time.

  28. Steph290

I’m always in Times Square, so more than likely I’ll be there unless they call me to work or something comes up. We’ll see tomorrow!

    1. LIVEfromNY

It seems like and easy thing to do but from a technical standpoint its alot harder than you think… They have to take a bunch of “samples” of the engine/exhaust sounds at various RPM’s, and make them sound seamless. The sound also has to be dynamic, because it needs to react to the different inputs by the player at any given time…

    2. HugoStiglitz_420

I think people need to realize that gt5p was accurate. it depends on the view. while using chase cam especially, the sound is great. The roof cam is similar. the cockpit cam has much less muffler noise so you mainly hear the engine itself muffled. I don’t know how the bumper view sounds because the view is completely awful, I can’t believe anyone uses it. Games like Forza and Shift will have the same engine sound no matter what view you use & that’s innaccurate (especially shift). Shift even has engines with turbo chargers for every single car, even cars that don’t have turbos. I still think that Forza and Shifts engine sounds are more enjoyable but I still think even gt5p deserves credit for accuracy & the amazing sound you get while using chase cam

    1. HugoStiglitz_420

definetly. I wanna see both but definetly costa di amalfi because of the stupid people that try to get run over lol

  29. cohetedor

If they do reveal the New York track here, let’s hope their next stop is Seattle, would really miss it if that track wasn’t in, after all those hours driving it in the GT40 for the license tests.

    1. eric

Perhaps Seattle has been updated. The KingDome is no longer there. A parking garage and Quest Field sit in the chicane were it used to be. And just a couple of months ago you can no longer drive across the trail tracks there either.

  30. Alex p.

Personaly, I liked New York as a track a lot. Yes, many 90 degrees turns, but that was the challenge, alsways breaking later than your oponents and managing to keep it on the racing line and let’s not forget the slipstream possibillities.

  31. Bankai123

I’ll go after work to check out the demo and record some videos. I made up my mind that i’m not gonna play anything but the final game so this demo is a no-no for me. I just wanna see how this build looks. I’ll get videos if i can but beware that my phone does not record in HD so we’ll see what happens.

  32. jakenj9

New York at night. That would make the course look brilliant. Or maybe an endurance event with day to night. Or NY at night in the rain….. Can’t wait for GT5.

    1. Tek9[R]

I would like to see something like Ridge Racer 4, with the race ending right at midnight on New Years Eve. Fireworks and all.

  33. KilzoneStrife

I hope NY is in.loved that track.and night/weather would make it insanely beautiful.I cant say I hate any GT tracks,well..i have a dislike of autmn ring!

    1. Wits

The direct oposite here. One of my favorite tracks is Autumn Ring and NY for me is one of the least exciting tracks. Instead give me Seattle or SSR11.

    2. viejaloca

Yeah, definitely Seattle because of the fun jumps it had, but I also like the high speed straights of NY, plus with rain and night weather, I’m sure both tracks will be more entertaning (or frustrating lol).

  34. HugoStiglitz_420

I’m surprised how many people despise city tracks. London is my favorite in gt5p which for me says a lot considering it’s up against Suzuka. IMO new york was one of the best looking courses in gt4 & after seeing that the best looking course is in GT5 ( El Capitan ) I hope to see it although I hate the ny yankees. yankees S**K!!! lol

    1. organ-donor

City tracks are alright, I just don’t like the narrowness and being able to grind the walls around turns. I prefer wide open tracks that let you go off into the grass and dirt if you take a turn too fast. City tracks look great but it feels more like bowling with bumpers that keep your ball from going into the gutter. Hopefully mechanical damage will take care of the wall grinders.

    2. HugoStiglitz_420

that’s true, grinders are annoying but people that take shortcuts on grass are bad too. I hate that people think a lil bit is ok, it’s not. I also don’t know if people realize going wide to maintain more speed is just as bad. So with damage, city courses are infallible as far as cheating goes. plus for learning I think city courses are great because you wouldn’t get stuck in or pulled off the road by grass. I do think that it is harder for a city course to be a great track than it is for a normal circuit. Nurburgring’s still my favorite though

    3. George

The biggest trouble with city courses is that they are real world streets, trashed by trucks and buses, weirdly winding because of previous buildings, slippery and uneven surfaces (see Paris from GT4)also in real world tracks like suzuka you can watch a formula 1 race on tv and understand the racing lines, even the tricky corners are know to be tricky. City courses (at least close ones like Opera Paris, Hong Kong and New York) need a much better understanding of how to pick a line. As for wallriders, mechanical damage and small changes in the road closing cements can really waste more seconds than racing fair.

  35. Rotard12a

Heh, PD/Sony manage to stick their advertising hands just about everywhere.

Kind of a cool car. Or at least it has a cool commercial haha

    1. The Gran Finale

      Copy that.

I know a lot of people hated Hong Kong, but I actually thought that course was unique and fun. Would love to see that track in full HD glory instead of New York which is just a sequence of 90 degree turns.

    2. Sum1s2pid

While I’m absolutely horrible at the city-based courses, the more the merrier. New York and the rest will look *awesome* in HD.

    3. HugoStiglitz_420

@BoBo I would also rather see Spa.
@FD3S yes, absolutely. I know Shibuya is an interesting place for a track. Another feature that Grid has I hope GT5 includes is Touge. I loved touge races.

and please, no one use touge for a 5th grader pun or joke just because it’s pronounced similar the phrase too gay

    4. MrSkyline

both NYC and Hong Kong are horrible in my opinion, like BoBo sais Spa FTW!

i like courses that flow, not the straight-90degreeturn-straight-90degreeturn-straight-90degreeturn-straight-90degreeturn courses, that’s boring.

    5. HugoStiglitz_420

it’s much more than that. it takes place on really windy mountain roads during night or day. there are 2 rounds. One down the course, one up it in reverse direction. Both times are added up so unless there’s a freak occurance tie, there’s never a 3rd round. Touge is also done in tournament format, so there are 2 rounds for one match but there will be other opponents to beat afterwards to reach 1st place. This is important, the chase car cannot make contact with the leader and if it does, the chase gets time added on. whoever wins the first half a match starts in the lead for the second. when using great courses, touge is awesome but I’m pretty sure point to point course maker in GT5, we can do our own touge races

    6. occasionalracer

@MrSkyline with any course you want to learn how to make it flow…. all those “90 degree turns” are not taken the same so for me I wouldn’t say they are boring or less challenging, you just need a bit more practice to make things as smooth as possible as with any track.
