The latest update to Gran Turismo 5, version 1.05, was made available just a few hours ago and weighs in at 608MB. Here’s a quick, official summary of all the new changes, but users are discovering a few more new tweaks in our forums as well:
- Seasonal Events: [Seasonal Events] have been added to the [GT Mode] – [GT Life] screen. From here you can participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team. In these events, all participants are under the same regulations, and if you complete the event you will win rewards and experience. Compete on the leader boards with players around the world, in Time Trials and Drift Trials!
- Online Collector’s Dealership: An [Online Collector’s Dealership] has been added to the left and centre of the [GT Mode]-[GT Life] screen. In here you will find popular and rare cars. You might just come across that one car you’ve always been looking for, that you haven’t been able to find in the [Used Car Dealership].
- Online Race Rewards and Experience: When you complete a race in the [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge], you will now gain rewards and experience points. Even if you are focused more on playing online, you’ll still be able to gain rewards and levels that you need to progress in [GT Life].
- Driving Distance and Number of Wins in Online Races: The driving distance and the number of wins you achieve when you complete a race in [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge] will now affect your stats in [Profile] and the [Garage]. Here the results from your online play will cumulate within [GT Life].
- Improved Rewards: The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011.) This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.
- Race Information Display: It is now possible to set the [Race Info Display] in [Start]-[Quick Options]. (You can also set this in [Race Display] in [Options]).
- Save Data Backup: You can now copy and restore your save data. For details, please refer to the in-game [Manual].
- User BGM (Menu): From [Options]-[Hardware]-[Audio Settings], it is now possible to set the [User BGM] (Menu)]. (This can also be set from the [Music Library] within [GT Mode]).
- Car Name Change: The official name of “Red Bull X1” has been changed to the “Red Bull X2010”.
- Integration with the Website: The main features within [GT Mode]-[Community] can now also be accessed through the “gran-turismo.com” official website.
- [Important Note:] We have made improvements to the [Log] within [GT Mode]- [Community] section, in order to make its operation more stable. Please note that the information that was contained here from before the update has been reset.
MORE UPDATES:
- The license test menus have been streamlined. After winning a bronze or silver trophy, for example, you have the option to immediately restart the test without having to sit through the animation sequence. (Thanks, Alex.)
- GT Academy USA has now been listed in the new Seasonal Events (I’m writing up a full post on this now).
- Mechanical damage has now been implemented in the game’s “Practice Mode” – the first time the feature has been usable outside of the custom online events.
One interesting thing to note is that today, December 20th, was set to be the launch date of the US GT Academy. However, as of writing there is no mention of this in the latest update, though presumably it may appear in the new “Seasonal Events” later. Stay tuned for more, and thanks to all who sent this in so quickly!

You know what I would like to see is a place where we could sell our cars to one another online for GT credits. For instance making it possible for us to post cars for sale in the online dealership.

I’m sure this is already known about by a lot of people but just in case anyone missed it, (export all to XMB) is now available from the photo gallery. I wanted this big time, very happy they added it.
This update is freakin’ awesome. Love it.
Also I wasn’t having a very good time with using the online features (kept failing to connect) but after this update it has worked 100% of the time so happy for that aswell although idk what the reason for that is.
I downloaded and installed this update and it did create some problems. Firstly, I received an error message, secondly my PS3 crashed (first time ever), secondly, I had to reinstall GT5(!), thirdly, I lost my two stealth cars. Looking at my garage, some of the thumbnails for some of my cars have disappeared…
Really, it made for an annoying night. At least I could watch Top Gear while GT5 reinstalled…
Has this happened to anyone else?
Yeah, I got an error message. But it recovered. Saw a bugatti on the online server, bought it, LAGS ATON. Don’t buy it.

Finally downloaded the update on the fourth attempt. First 3 tries failed after 11-18% downloaded. The server must have been overloaded. Must say I’m really pleased with this update – well done PD, keep up the good work. It’s good to see that Kaz and the team are committed to improving the GT5 experience and not just saying ‘it is what it is and we’ll fix everything in GT6’.

riiiight so after 600mb we only get 5 easy races, and a corny dealership? …but its nice to see the AI appears to have been tweaked while playing it.
small thing i’ve noticed (dunno if it’s been mentioned already, haven’t read all the comments) is that a glitch with the rev counter on the Nissan Silvia S13 Dia has been fixed, previously the rev counter was working like the speedo ie increased steadily with speed, not with revs, but that’s been fixed now
Hey just found out you can take off all the information when you are playing, like the position, the speed everything except the map. That is really good now we can enjoy all the cockpit view :)

You can turn the map off as well, separately, in the quick options menu under the ‘Course Map Display Mode’ drop down. So it is possible to turn everything off.

True, but if we check the 2 players mode (off-line) we will see that mechanical damage was added there too.
Just hope PD implements the options of GT4 for the 2P mode, more features are welcome too.
Better said, those options were added to the Arcade Mode.
You cant pit in 2 player and fix damage or tyre wear…so stupid

Is there a reason the “enable personal BGM (menu)” checkbox ALWAYS resets for me? I’ve chosen songs and enabled the box about 5 times now and it keeps resetting every time.
Follow up: Now my in-race custom BGM has been disabled as well, after working perfectly from the first day I got the game. What gives here?

Mechanical damage is available in arcade mode now too. Maybe that’s not new, i don’t really know – today was the first time I played arcade mode.
Just ran my Ferrari on a couple laps of the ring with the HUD and MAP turned off. Amazing! Thanks so much for that option!
still hoping for saves on endurance some people have kids and cant go a whole 24 hours.

Yes, some awesome updates in there. Really liking custom menu music, I definitely was preaching about that one a couple weeks ago. Totally going to upload some old GT menu music!!
I also noticed that when you play custom menu BGM, it will randomly decide to return to game BGM after a bit. Annoying.

Found another change. It’s not just license tests.
Now when a B-spec race finishes you are brought back to the beginning race menu so you can start again right away.
Goes for A-spec races as well.
The Ring 24h version got unlocked after the install! Nice! Don’t know for which event this is reward for, could be for all silver in AMG intermediate.
The 24h ring was for all gold in AMG intermediate, exactly what I was trying to get just hours before the update showed up! I managed to get gold in 4 out of 5 events and well, now I lost the excitement in trying to gold the last one since they already gave me my prize :( but maybe there will be a different prize now for getting all golds. I’ll see.
Wonder what the update on Christmas will be.

Nope. I think it’s like people that thought shadows got fixed in the last one. It’s a jedi mind trick Kaz picked up playing Star Wars games at gamer conventions……lol
hahaha yes you are more or less correct about the jedi mind trick!! however it is worth noting that there have been some improvements to the visuals… they appear to be working on the problem but it’s not entirely resolved…. just improved a little.. after playing for around 4 hours straight i can see some minor improvements in interior shadows and screen tearing in general, headlight beam angles, and the dreaded pixelating around any object within the spray/smoke aren’t quite as bad… good to see they are trying at least….

The online dealership doesn’t cycle after days pass! I did a quick 3 races in a row at Indy for the American Championship (which gives you 117,000 credits now instead of 98,000) and the list remained unchanged. This means I can get 5 million and when I’m done, I’ll be sure to go and get the damned FGT.
Online dealership probably rotates for real days, not ingame days…

Awesome, now I have all the Gran Turismo 2 Menu music to replace the GT5 music :D This is one feature I REALLY wanted :D Now a retro trip each time I play! :)
I’m fastest in NE region without ABS enabled.. 19th (at this time) overall. Pretty nice physics for the Academy time trial, but tough.
Enjoying my new Menu Background music. Magnum PI soundtrack sounds soo much better, lol. Unfortunately your BGM doesnt carry over to demo drives, or override the still tacky GT Auto music.

ha, I tried the GT-R spec V in total stock. Probably would have won had the opponents not been so spaced out. Had to get sports soft tires and weight reduction to win.

Great news, but unfortunately, GT5 burned out my 60 Gb PS3 last Friday, after going mad in Top Gear Lotus Elise event with no aids. 100 tries or so. Turn on skid recovery, and voila! gold at first attempt.
The next day, I leave it in B Spec, and the Red Light of Dead came to me, laughing loudly!!

Yes a FAT one. Resurrected by hairdryer and sent to me local shop to have new thermic paste and in-depth cleaning.

Yeah, just open it and clean it up. It worked for me. Mine was super dusty inside.
Got the red light while doing the endurance races. After dusting it out, the fan was incredibly silent.. good as new.

my phat ps3 lasted me since ’07 and burnt out this past summer… i like the old ps3’s a lot better (4 usb ports, and the ability to play ALL ps2 games)

i think PD heard about people hunting for the Formula GT for hours and days on end and never finding it. so they rectified it with the online garage. they will probably only have the most saught after cars. it took me 2weeks to finally see a truck in the used car garage to be able to purchase it and FINALLY complete truck series. luckily it was the toyota. being online they will probably moniter what cars people need and post them accordingly… i think its GENIUS

OP is right what we need is to be able to disable the map, Disable the drivers names, but leave the instruments.
I wish they’d remove the “brake here” marker as well, or the flashing gear indicator as it’s more commonly known.

Yeah, it worries me the biggest problem in the video game isnt the first thing he fixed. Its starting to scare me into thinking it wont ever be.
On SD TVs like mine, I never noticed that problem at all.
Then when I went to Sony Style and played GT5 there I was like “Holy $#!^ so this is what everyone was talking about, that’s horrible!” I think PD should fix that right away, but then again I could care less, I’m stuck with an SD TV.
It has already been said that there will not be a fix for shadows because it is a hardware limitation. Unless there is a Sega-CD-like adapter, this ain’t gonna happen!
@AGNT009: Uh………..shadowing is the biggest problem? Uh, no, I don’t think so. How about the large number of missing classic GT tracks{i.e. the Test Course}, or the fact that Standard cars still can’t have body/wheel mods? That’s gotta be more important than some lame shadowing issue, dont’cha think?{No offense.}
I thought they actually improved it with the update. The shadows seem much smoother and higher-res to me than before, at least in-game as long as cars aren’t too distant from the camera (still boxy in replays, especially at long distance).
Or does my memory play tricks on me? Maybe I should consider upgrading then.

What about people that don’t play on line much. All these updates are still geared towards online play. I don’t play GT5 much anymore because of the lack of events and tracks. I will do the update just because I don’t want to have to do a whole day worth of updates considering there is an update every week. Do updates to the overall game, not just one aspect of it.

First of all, they need to do online updates because GT Academy starts today, and they’ve had really poor support for online so far, and most of the updates until now have NOT been for online.
Second, if you have already completed everything in the game and you’re bored, that’s kinda weird that you’ve done it already and DON’T want to play online.
Third, the game hasn’t even been out a month yet.
Fourth, there ARE a bunch of changes for non-online play, like improved rewards, backing up, BGM, and race information. And did I mention it’s not even out a month yet?

the clutch has worked perfectly on my G25 since Nov. 24th.
I’m thinking that the G27 may be the problem, which is bizarre to say the very least.

When I read ‘new events’ I was expecting more a spec events to add to the dire amount we currently have. Not really fussed about online racing at all (although I know a lot of you are). Ah well.

I’ve never heard of what you describe ever happening, cars usualy arrive when the other person logs on if not before. Ive had my ps3 turned off and a friend sent a car, it was there later when i logged on.
I hate this bug. I noticed that when I send a gift from the garage I lose the car and the other person doesn’t get it but when I send it from the community>gift it works. But I didn’t try too many times, losing cars is not nice.
lost two cars that way so far……..grrrrr. Seems to coincide with the server crashes in my case.

Actually they skip 4 (shi) because it rhymes with die. That’s why they do not like that.
I do not know why the 13th floor is considered bad luck but 14 is also considered bad luck as it rhymes with “sure die”. Who would want a number that states that you’re surely gonna die?

The mp3 playback issue. Does that mean that we can choose songs as we drive i.e. on the fly by going into the XMB and choosing from there? If so…..KACHING!!! otherwise can someone explain further because I hated having to go in and out of the optioins menu.

I am very very happy you can now backup a saved game … that one was really gnawing at me. I would be so ticked if my HD crashed and I lost my save. Anyone know how it works? Does it export something in game, or does it just release the copy protection, or … ?

@idlestation and they also made it so that after a single race you stay in that event…say for when your grinding you dont have exit the race after everytime you finish your “still there” and can automatically restart!!! saves thousands of minutes and lives while grinding!!!

Awesome, had about a week off GT5 due to having to move my nan from surrey over the weekend. Havnt really touched the online mode as of yet in gt5, may give it a venture tonight after work. Something to look foward to!

Noooo im just in the middle of the formula GT championship in b-spec and i see this pop up :(( Now ill miss some money but whatever awesome update anyways <3
I still can’t get online because GT wants to use some weird port on my router. All my other games work fine. And to make things worse the update lets GT5 try to get a connection every time I go back to the “My Home” menu. It takes me 2.35 minutes to get 1 car from the car delivery and 5:30 to change the oil aswell. The game is totally ruined now. Who can help me? (I cant change the router cause I’m no IT specialist and the router is from my landlord).
@ G T Allegerita, you need to DMZ your ps3. It’s not GT5’s fault, it’s yours. Google “how to DMZ PS3”
On topic, I’m extremely happy with this patch and it came just in time. Good work PD
