More Multi-Platform Gran Turismo Rumors

gt5prologue

There may be a hint of sensationalist link-baiting in VG247’s latest headline about Gran Turismo 5 – indeed, you can’t help but wonder why they didn’t mention these comments by SCEA Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller in their article last month.  Regardless, his additional comments reinforce the important notion that the GT series is coming to platforms other than the PS3:

“[Polyphony Digital] report directly into our CEO, Kaz Hirai, so it’s a little bit of a ‘wait and see’,” the exec told VG247 when asked when we can expect to see GT5.

“But we look for that franchise to continue on as many platforms as possible.”

You won’t see GTPlanet jumping to any rediculous conclusions about a PC (or Xbox, ha!) release, but Mr. Koller’s broad choice of words there is still raising a few eyebrows.  E3 2009 may be even more interesting than we originally thought…

As eluded to in the cryptic message by Amar212. The ps3 (2 versions), possible psp2? It wouldnt suprise me if there was a watered down version of GT5 on the ps2, and even the psp.

Some might think it would be pointless to have a watered down ps2 GT5 title, but I still know many, many people still have, and play the ps2 with really no intent on buying a ps3. (atleast not yet… maybe on the next possible price drop.)

Pc remains a possibility, as i see that happening. A bad ass high end gaming rig, maxxed out settings etc… o.O

Gran Turismo to hit the PC?
    Author: Joe Martin
    Published: 15th April 2008

Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the Gran Turismo racing simulation series on the PlayStation, has hinted in an interview

with a German website that the series may be making the move away from Sony exclusivity and towards the PC.

Speaking to DerStandard, Kazunori said that it was hugely unlikely that Gran Turismo would come to the any consoles other

than the PlayStation 3, but it was possible the racing sim could make the jump to PC. For some reason he hinted that this was

an even stronger possibility for the Chinese market too…

“It’s very, very unlikely that GT will be appearing on another console. But maybe it’ll be released on PC. Particularly for

    the Chinese market,” said Kazunori.

The comment doesn’t clarify exactly if Kazunori is referring to ports of the old GT games or multiplatform releases of the

upcoming Gran Turismo 5, but it would seem logical to expect that he’s referring GT5 rather than a port of an original

    PlayStation game.

It begs the question then, are racing simulations of that depth and quality of interest to PC players, or are the better

played with a controller than a keyboard? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Gran Turismo 5 to be Released on “Multiple Platforms”

In a revealing statement from last week’s Game Developer’s Conference, SCEA Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller

mentioned that Gran Turismo 5 will be released across “all platforms” when it “makes the most sense”. The comments came from

a Q&A session and were just picked up by VG247:

“Ultimately, they [Polyphony Digital] are a developer who makes a lot of their own decisions, but we are looking at GT5

across all platforms, just to see what makes the most sense. […] Seriously though, there is really nothing we can really

say about it, other than it’s a franchise we would like to continue. So, other than that, we don’t really have any

announcements regarding the game at this time.”

Now, what the heck does that mean? GT5 will almost certainly not be released on any hardware that competes with Sony’s

franchise, and it won’t be on older systems (PS2). That leaves the obvious PlayStation 3 and re-affirms that development of

Gran Turismo Mobile for the PSP is ongoing. This idea is in line with recent comments about GT Mobile from Kazunori Yamauchi

himself, and fits the cryptic hints about GT’s future shared by highly respected GTPlanet member amar212 in our forums.

Of course, it’s worth mentioning two more “radical” interpretations of John Koller’s comments which, despite being highly

unlikely, can logically be made. Less than one year ago, Kazunori Yamauchi declared that Gran Turismo could be coming to the

PC, and that the mysterious Gran Turismo for Boys is still in the works. Could both or either of these games be what Mr.

Koller is referring to? Time will tell…

Quote=BMFan, “The main reason i bought the PS3 was for GT5,if i didn’t care about GT i would have probably not bought the PS3 and upgraded my pc with the money.Could of bought a much better GPU than the 1950gt.
If it go’s to Xbox i will sell my GT5P copy and never buy a PD game again, which will be a sad day because then i have to rely on the NFS franchise”

Haha, right, and your upgraded PC would already be well out of date anyway, so what would you have achieved?

How pathetic. You bought a PS3 for GT5, and if it goes over to Xbox 360 as well you won’t bother at all with the franchise? Your loss kid, it’s stupid logic, but clearly you are one of the fanbotic idiots who despises any other gamer who gets the chance to experience their beloved franchise on another format. GROW UP.

  11. Lowmax

Although it’s highly unlikely that GT5 will turn up on any non-sony platform, It might have something to do with this OnLive thing (if that doesn’t turn out to be vapour ware).

It just seems as the only reasonable multi-platform jump for PD.

  12. Rens

I don’t think GT5 will have a release on the Xbox 360. Maybe the other series like GT6, GT7 or something. Because there already is a GT5 Prologue on the ps3, there is an exclusive Logitech Driving force GT ps3 wheel (which I am using :P), the cars from GT Academy were sponsored by Playstation, so I just don’t (want to) believe that GT5 will have a release on multi platforms. :P This cannot happen. Like other people said: I bought a ps3 because of this game!!! :D

  13. Lucozade

He didnt say “multi platform” so he means there going to be more GT’s on the next PS4, PS5 ect.

  14. Allen Ray

its won’t make sense if Gran Turismo 5 was coming to the 360,its will only make sense when it’s in the PS3 and PSPs!!!??? ;P

  15. Billy

I think, as many others have said, that he was merely referring to other Sony consoles. PD are a first party developer, they are simply not allowed to produce a game for anything that isn’t made by Sony (without Sony’s permission) and I can’t think of an example where Sony have ever let one of their first party devs make a game for anything without ‘PlayStation’ in its name.

It could also be a mis-translation, he may be referring to the media type? e.g. blu-ray and PSN? Seems a bit of a long shot though, I mean think how big-a-download the full GT5 is going to be? No thanks.

Also, not wanting to sound like a dirty fanboy (I’m not) but I don’t know that a 360 is capable of running this. I mean PD always get the best out of the console so it wouldn’t be a simple port to 360. They’d have to re-code the entire thing, with optimizations for the 360’s hardware., which is pretty damn different. PC would be easier I guess, since they could do a Crysis and just wait for the hardware to catch up. Still, seems extremely unlikely.

  16. Joachim

IF GT5 will be able on xbox 360, I get realy sad.. I bought PS3 60GB for 7-800$ in 2007 because they said GT5 would be released on PS3 that year.. and now, we can hear that it will be able for xbox 360 gamers to play GT5 for only 200$! F**k I hate it :( But.. as you also are saying, I don’t belive that GT5 are coming for Xbox 360, but we’ll see..

  17. BMfan

The main reason i bought the PS3 was for GT5,if i didn’t care about GT i would have probably not bought the PS3 and upgraded my pc with the money.Could of bought a much better GPU than the 1950gt.

  18. Mr Latte

Its only taken 5 years to get to this point.
HAA what about PSP version, and now talk of other platforms what a load of …..

Even if it gets announced it will probably take them AGES to actually release for PC or whatever they are considering.

I wish GTP would find something concrete to report and its amazing a website such as this dedicated to the core fan CANNOT get a scoop of information direct from P Digital.

    E3 whats happening?
    Has GT5P updates been dropped?
    Will GT5 appear 2009?

  19. firas sabri

i think Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller he didnt know about what he is saying !!!

polyphony digital is a part of “scew”

so how gt5 gonna realese 2 another console

is it true i think kazunori gonna realese a mini edsion for PC called “GT ONLINE” and its goes to ” sony online entertainmet”

coz sony always make “mmorpg” games exclusive 4 pc from (SOE)

  20. Jordan

As others have noted, I think his comment ultimately refers to the long-term future of the series on the next several generations of Sony hardware.

  21. mimaximax

People already bought ps3 just to play GT5. If we have to buy a bluray drive to get the game with maxed graphics on PC, I think lots of people will download it instead.

  22. d3br34k5

I have a blu-ray drive in my PC.

Anyone who wants to play GT5 on a PC is going to have to shell out big bucks for the hardware to run it.

  23. mimaximax

What about DVD vs Bluray format ? Do people think GT5 will be shrinked to a dual layer dvd ? I think it will be hard to release the game on bluray for 360 and PCs…

Or maybe 9gb is enough for the whole GT5…

  24. Commenter1

“But we look for that franchise to continue on as many platforms as possible.”

    I interpret this as PS3,PS4,PS5…

    and PS2 PSP

Could be a misunderstanding because of a translation too…

  25. bullshnit

I highly doubt it will come to PC or 360, PS2 and PSP is possible. PD is owned by Sony so I don’t understand how they operate as a separate entity like the previous article says. With a console race as tight as ever you’d think that Sony would keep it exclusive.

I too bought a PS3 for GT5. I would be seriously disappointed if it went multi just because the quality will go down (fact). Everyone would just pirate it on PC (including me) and that would take away millions of sales.

  26. Watevaman

I’m not reading this as a mutlicompany multiplatform statement, but rather as a statement that GT5 is not the end of the line and that they want to keep making GT on Sony consoles as they keep coming out.

    However, I’m probably wrong.

  27. random guest

I think multiplatform is allways a good thing. It means more people can buy and enjoy the game, though I don’t really think it will be coming on 360 or PC… Well, looking forward to E3.

Though if they do release it on multiple platforms, I fear the final product might not come out as polished as it could be. I’m still sure that I’m going to enjoy it, so I don’t really care.

  28. CyborgGT

Obviously a competing console, such as 360 or Wii, is out of the question as long as Polyphony is owned by Sony (it was an SCEA employee who announced this news afterall, not PD), but I see the PC as a very likely possibility. You guys acknowledged yourself that Yamauchi said he wanted to bring the series to PC (specifically, he said he wanted this for the Chinese market to expand the series’s reach). “As many platforms as possible” means just that: as possible. PS3, PSP, PC. Maybe a PS2 port of the PSP game, but I remember reading that the PSP game was supposed to supplement the full GT5.

  29. d3br34k5

I’ve really enjoyed my PS3 and the time I’ve spent with Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be a little perturbed at a multi-platform launch of Gran Turismo 5.

My gaming PC is quite capable and I would upgrade my system specifically to get the most from GT5 on PC, but I purchased a PS3 under the guise that GT5 would be coming exclusively to this system.

If GT5 turns out to be multi-platform, I wont be able to help myself from feeling a little bit tricked into my PS3 purchase.
