Scale of Gran Turismo 5 “Dizzying”, says Yamauchi

kazunori_yamauchi-with-pictures

Japanese gaming mag Famitsu hit news stands this week featuring a fresh interview with Kazunori Yamauchi. He used the opportunity to reiterate GT5’s progress while emphasizing the scale of the game:

“Naturally, my attention is focused purely on Gran Turismo 5 right now. The scale of this title is just dizzying, so daily progress is slow, but it’s still going forward at a steady clip. All the basic stuff is complete, but we’re trying to give everything that little bit extra at present. We could release it any time we want, really, but I want to have that classic GT-style ‘did we really have to go this far?’ feel going. I want to go way beyond gamer expectations.”

Though I have not seen a direct translation of the entire Famitsu interview, 1UP.com did not hesitate to confirm that “you’ll be allowed to bring your entire collection of cars” earned in Gran Turismo PSP over to GT5. We’ve known about the interoperability between the two games for a while now, but nothing as of yet has indicated if all 850 cars in GT PSP will be making the move to GT5. Unless 1UP was being liberal in their translation, it’s beginning to look like a safe bet.

He also discussed his rationale for choosing what car will appear on the cover of each GT game while explaining his choice of the Corvette ZR-1 for GT PSP.

“When I think about what car to put on the cover, I have to figure out which car is considered the coolest at this exact moment in time. The auto industry is going through a transition period right now, and it’s a dangerous time for a lot of companies. It’s a major support of the entire world economy, and the vast amount of talent and output it produces is one reason why GT is what it is. I wanted to go back to the roots with what makes a car cool, so I chose GM’s Corvette ZR-1 to try and cheer the auto industry up a little.”

So, any takers on Gran Turismo 5’s box art next spring…?

“- HUD customisation, option to drive without HUD at all for more immersion.” – that’s a MUST! – not a hard thing to do, is it?

  2. Luke

“- HUD customisation, option to drive without HUD at all for more immersion. Saveable banks of views, fully customised head position, tilt and view angle, shake effect setting.”

Oh yes, that would be great, why do i still need a rev thing in the bottom right corner of the screen when the car has a big ass rev meter. I also like the idea of the “hidden shifting light” in the cockpit. The hand, which is preparing to shift when reaching rev limit.

  3. PeterWRC

The BMW E30 M3 would be a perfect car on the cover. That car was a revolution at the time , its made a new class between sportcars. Thats a GT car! Will it be in the GT5? I hope! And the E36 M3 of corse. And Mazda 323 GT-R ……..

    @ David

1080i is in the NTSC GT4 too. Only GT4 and TT can do it in the PS2. Whoever told you otherwise lied. You should check things out before commenting.

For the cover, SLS sounds like a solid bet.

  5. Vivian

i’m gonna play first forza 3 and then gran turismo 5. I can’t wait any longer, not yet a xbox 360 but closely. this is perfect for me: first play forza 3 for a half year and than GRAN TURISMO 5!!!!! forza is like a bad forplay but better than nothing

  6. PureAwesomeness

I reckon the GT5 cover car will be the new Lexus sports car. The McLaren (if it’s in the game) is another possibility I guess.

I would like to send some greetings and many many thanks to Kaz and Polyphony for what they already did. And I would like to let some notes for game developing here:

    – Car graphics is already over the top. From Prologue, it needs only to remove aliasing, white halos in long zoom views, shadow jaggies, tearing and some occasional FPS dropout. Cars are porn already, wonderful to look at.

    – Graphics of tracks need to be more live and “used”, with better smoke dispersing slowly and carried by wind and aerodynamical whirls behind car, tyre marks from slipping starts and burnouts and reverse lights for better feel of reality. All the effects from GT4 like exhaust popping Many new effects like heat haze mirroring seen in GC2007 trailer when SL enters the main straight would be nice.

    – Physics desperatelly need to be more “live”, hoppy and with independent suspension travel. Let the cars purchased in GT mode with their default factory tyres for factory behaviour, please! Physics with tyre deformations, proper grip handling, wheels in the air, realistic rollovers and with real tyre types would be perfect. See this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgQF84hyRRk

    – Real clutch operation with slipping, engine stalling and damage from abuse, real automatic transmission function with kickdowns. Let reverse gear to be changed as another gear, not only with separate button!

    – Car sounds are horrible. Real sports cars are angry and deep sounding, with many unique pops and gurgles. In Prologue, not only that I can’t hear Ferrari yet about minute after it passed by like real life, but sounds are wrongly phased with wrongly used samples, often sample for upper or lower rev range is missing at all and there is extrapolated sample from another rev range which sounds really horrible, for example Audi R8 or BMW M3 E92 which sound nothing like their real counterparts. If current sound team can’t handle them better, change them immediately. Just tune sounds on your cars till they are the same in game and in real life in all driving conditions. Then use the new engine for all cars. Overall sounds are three class under the graphics and this would be real shame to let those sounds in final game. This is very, very important!

    – Steering wheel programming should have steering angle limitation and ratio change for every car. For example, driving 205 T16 EVO in snow stages was really hard work with such broad wheel range.

    – Game system should be faster, more efficient and without excessive acknowledgements, for example you should be able to change a car in race menu, not only in main menu etc. More options and customisation for everyone’s taste.

    – Let us GT mode in all its glory, please! Whole GT mode, time trials, races, missions and licences without assists and in pro mode from default!

    – HUD customisation, option to drive without HUD at all for more immersion. Saveable banks of views, fully customised head position, tilt and view angle, shake effect setting.

    – Fully fuctional time of day and weather change, can’t wait to race Nürburgring 24h in last dusk sunbeams and while sky gets darker, from blue to black. Oh my god…

    – Replay with rewind feature at least, better with whole movie director with cutting, effects like various fadeouts, filters, polarizers, tints, slowmotion and export to 1080p MP4 file or youtube.

    – Please, negotiate with Porsche one more in 2010 while EA license will expire, their road and race cars would be just perfect in GT.

These are the steps to perfection. So think about them, please. Your loyal gran turismo lover.

  8. Bank Alexander

It’s obvious that the picture will be a: Nissan Skyline =) =D :P

But a Mazda Furai would look cool, even if a bit too radical for the GT tradition.
Or the cover art will just be a picture of Day, night, rain, snow and dirt haha.

  9. solid snake

maybe there will be some dlc like track packs, car packs ect..at the playstation store later on after it’s 2010 march releas.

  10. LordVonPS3

Also, read the quote about the GTPSP to GT5 transfer. How does one construe that what KY is saying means that all the cars will be transferable? That’s not how I’ve read this at all… At best I’d say KY is hinting that all cars in GTPSP will be in GT5.

    QUOTE BELOW >

In the interview, Yamauchi confirmed that you’ll be allowed to bring your entire collection of cars earned in Gran Turismo PSP into GT5 without penalty.

“The PSP version has over 800 cars included, and that number’s even higher in GT5,” he commented. “I want to get gamers in all sorts of different vehicles, from the latest models to old classics and world-class sports cars. Having the freedom to drive whatever you want is one of the main attractions of GT, after all.”

  11. LordVonPS3

KY stated a month ago at the time of the TGS that:-
    * GT5 is about 65% complete.
    * You’ll be able to transfer around 100 cars from GTPSP to GT5.

    1 Up is saying that:-
    * GT5 is in the final stages of development.
    * You’ll be able to transfer all GTPSP cars to GT5.

I don’t trust 1 Up. Neither should you.

  12. Mario

They need the Alfa Romeo 8C on the cover. The best looking car in the world is sure to catch peoples attention. But i have a feeling it will be the 458, since it will probably be released around early next year

  13. David

    @GT 911

I know that the 1080i mode was only in the JPN release but not offered to the rest of the world, so basically it didnt happen (was cut)! And I cannot understand why? If it worked in Japan on the same hardware and disc what on earth was the issue with the other regional releases. The absense of online was rediculous after KY bigging it up as being the big new feature.

It was 100% confirmed by KY himself a while ago in an interview that Porsche would NOT be in GT5. He said that they had exclusive licences with other developers at this time. The article about this was posted here on the news page! Im sure its a few pages back. As for whether they appear in future GT’s, maybe, but not GT5.

I wasnt getting mad its just that after getting Ferrari, Lambo, Bugatti isnt that enough of a marque addition for some people for one generation of GT? I know that Ruf’s are totally different but I think its a reasonable compromise that you at least have cars which look the same whereas some marques have not been present at all and in there case there is no similar alternative.

  14. Mark

The retail version of GT4 did support 1080i. Whoever told you otherwise lied. It also had better graphics than Forza and ran at twice the frame-rate.

GT5 will be coming out with no real competition. Forza 3 was a big disappointment and Shift, while it looks better than Forza 3, only runs at 30fps.

  15. Sam__ NY

I’m pretty sure PD confirmed the Ferrari 599 Fiona XX for the cover, although that Dodge Viper pic posted by Forgetful is interesting.

  16. Chris

I love GT, but fact remains that they haven’t hit a release date yet to my knowlege in the history of the franchise. I have to treat this as vapour. I’m just gonna buy Forza 3 to tide me over and help me ignore everything that is being said to try and distract us from the fact that this game is not going to be released for ages. I did download the demo of Forza 3, and it’s not as good as GT, but they are closing the gap, and considering the time between GT releases they should be worried about the future of the genre. It’s an awesome franchise, no one has ever matched it, but their release cycle is a joke, and while Forza are iterating alot quicker they will close the gap. Get your shit together Polyphony.

  17. RAugie

1998 Audi B5 A4, APR Stage III+ is the best car ever and deff should be the cover car.
Or maybe the AWE Tuning Silverbullet :)

  18. Whatbrown

I really, really hope that all the cars from GTPSP won’t be transferable to GT5. That doesn’t leave nearly enough brand new models and it also just plain doesn’t make sense. How and why could PD possible go out and re-visit an identical car lis to the one they did for GT4. A lot of those cars are irrlevant now or duplicates.

It also could mean the car models for those cars will be craptastic and based off of images from the last time the cars were photographed and modeled. That would be similar to GTPSP where the newly modeled cars look better than the older ones.

I am optimistic that this means that all cars that are in both games are transferable- not that every car is GTPSp will be in GT5.

  19. GT911

@Obli, thanks for mention that, i didn´t know, i have the american version, is wierd that in the UK version the feature not appear…, i heard that the online was cut almost at the end of the game, i guess the PS2 was not the best to perform online games.

  20. Pingwhen

Thank you Rand al Thor. Finally someone that isn’t dumb. Honestly people skid marks. Really? Reverse lights? Really? Just like damage. You wouldn’t need reverse lights if you knew how to rac. And skid marks for what? To smell? To see where you lost it last time? I got nothing

  21. rand al thor

i bet everyone here that the cover car on gt5 will be the mercedes sls amg. its so obvious. not a bad looking car either.

gran turismo 5 will be the greatest game ever. nascar, wrc, 1000 cars all damage all interiors.

just needs day night cycle and weather and the game will be complete

  22. Black Chamber

I hope that rain and night racing make it into the “extra effort” Yamauchi-san mentioned that his team is adding to the game.

Especially considering his “did we really have to go this far?” statement.

  23. Alan

Altough i can see it being the ferrari 456 id personally like to see a black mclaren slr on the cover, maybe they should bring out different covers for different regions like a dodge viper for the north american region and a slr for the european region

  24. eric

A little off topic but MSH’s comment made me think of it. The Tesla Roadster will not be able to compete in an endurance race, because it only gets 200miles a charge(claimed, actual range is much less) and it takes 4 hours to charge. A 4 hour pit stop would not be very competitive.

  25. GT911

    @ David.

The 1080i mode is in GT4 in fact was the only game in the PS2 who features that option, in other words the first game in the PS2 that could perform a HD resolution, if you dont believe me enter in the game an look for the options and you will see it.

Other thing Porsche is not 100% denied in GT5, in IGN write that but the journalist was an animal that dont even was a fan about the GT series.

I only was telling about a rumor and thats all dont get mad. The Brand is one of the most important in the sports cars, and for that it should apper in the game, Ruf is not the same, is like instead of Ferrari you recieve Hammanh (a house that modifies Ferraris).

Is just about points of view.

  26. maxpontiac

The negative specualtion continues by posters despite the following —

    – “did we really have to go this far?”
    – “I want to go way beyond gamer expectations.”

I know, it’s much easier to sit and complain, right?

  27. Rens

Concerning the car-transfer item, I think what KY meant is that you are able to transfer al your psp cars, IF they are in GT5. I cannot believe that the GT psp car list is 80% of the GT5 car list, this would be a VERY BIG disappointment. In my opinion there isn’t a limit of say 30 cars, but obviously you can only tranfer the cars wich are available in GT5.

  28. CarBastard

A bit of help please since i’m not a native speaker…WTF is “Dizzying”? If its something like big, im glad, hehe.

    1. Jordan

@CarBastard: Your interpretation of “dizzying” is correct. It comes from the “dizzy” feeling that someone may experience when looking down from an extremely tall place (building, cliff, etc.).

  29. David

They would be hilarious, people would play the game for ever and never find any damn Porsches!!!

But seriously I dont know why people are still hoping for Porsches, KY has said 100% NO THEY ARE NOT GOING TO BE IN GT5 so why is this still even a question!

Personally I think fans of that brand are lucky because they at least have things which look like Porsches.

  30. RazzlDazzle

It would be funny if they put a Porsche 911 gt3rs on the cover without even telling us Porsche was in the game. Upon release day we pick it up and BAM there’s a Porsche, we were so unexpecting…

And the cars being transferred from psp to gt5 has been on the gt website for at least a month. I even made a thread about it…

  31. David

KY should watch what he says because all it does is feed peoples expectations and then it will just lead to more dissapointments. I don’t believe for one minute that GT will beat Forza on its community features but it might out do every other game in every other department!

For me GT4 was a let down, he said all the same stuff as he’s saying now about how it will blow you away and then weeks from launch Online and HD (1080i) mode was cut. I bet GT5 wont have skidmarks or good sounds (still sound rubbish even in the new toyota vid) etc. All the things that you expect to be givens!

So PD, instead of putting it stuff thats really random and might amaze people for 5 seconds why dont you set about putting stuff in that it expected (as seen in other games) so people arnt let down.

  32. Khlad

    JUST AN IDEA!

I hope there will be a BIG Online garage market in GT5, where u can put your car there for sale, u pick the price u wanna sell your car and you wait till someone offer. U give facts about the car like how much its tuned, km, just like in real life. ;D

    Sorry for bad english ;P

  33. danthespaceman

I have no doubt we’ll see the new SLS AMG on the cover. The car will be released right around the same time GT5 will be.

  34. Khlad

Kazunori Yamauchi is the BEST! Look how many Skylines there gonna be in the game ;D its my favourite car.

Any1 know why Kazunori Yamauchi didnt want the customization thing in GT3 and GT4 and now GT5 ?? Cos i liked that in GT and GT2. But no matter whut i will like all GT series :D BEST game ever in human history.
    GO Kazunori Yamauchi!

  35. josh

The easy answer would be the GT by Citroen, but I doubt they will do that. Another good one would be the Polyphony Digital Formula 1.

But if we are talking cars available in the real world for the right price etc… I don’t know if they are going to get any more Lamborghini’s (other than the two variants of Countach they already have), but how bout the new Reventon.

  36. JToipa

Oh no! All 850 cars from GTPSP? What a shitty carlist it will be, GT4 plus 100 new cars INCLUDING the ones from Prologue, NASCAR and WRC D:

  37. GT911

I see that coming the whole catalog of cars of GTPSP which is basically the same as GT4 plus a little few more. So for GT5 we expect like 150 new cars which is cool i mean we already saw the other cars in the previous GT4 but at least are cool cars.

There are rumors about the inclusion of Porsche, because it is said that the licensed contract that the brand has with EA is going to expire but i don´t know, becasue is that is true them how Turn 10 included the brand in their game, i imagen that maybe the paid a fee to EA… but well is Micro$oft jejeje… The rumors came from PSXExtreme

I hope to see Porsche in that game is the only brand that is missing for me jejejeje

  38. Cheese Sandwich

Well Kazunori you can release whenever you want as long as it still makes me love GT!

    In Kazunori We Trust!

  39. jay gatsby

    it’s okay man, nevermind
I was just joking around! actually, I didn’t know you shouldn’t say “first”, that kind of thing.^^

  40. oppylocky

I sincerely hope that ‘scale of gt5 is dizzying’ will include skid marks because with all the power available on the ps3, i just can’t understand why there have been no skid marks yet.
