Viper ACR on the Nurburgring 24h Circuit

Mimaximax has just shared another video clip from his time in Germany a few weeks ago – this time providing some in-car gameplay footage from a Viper ACR on the latest revision of the complete Nurburgring circuit. While it’s nothing particularly new, you’ll get a good impression of the physics this most recent demo was running.

    Wow, I hope that they include a Nurburgring 24h race on GT5 (well, they did on GT4 so why wouldn’t they?). I can see it now, racing with 15 other cars and the new effect which will let you see your surroundings change from day to night and back to day again in real time as you progress through the epic race… although I do hope they give you an option to save your progress and turn the console off during the race, because I’d hate to have to leave a PS3 on overnight, It nearly destroyed my PS2, and I do NOT want to put up with the crappy B-spec driver AI

  2. Liam

    Wow the replay vid with the Nissan looked nice ecspecially when they all got air over the Flugplatz!

    I’ve been playing SHIFT for a while now on PS3 (just as a filler untill GT5) comparing The Ring in both games, one thing I noticed is that GT5’s version has a lot more character… fuck I want this game now!

  3. lugi

    @mario: please try to write your comment once again, 4 spelling mistakes within 9 words=meh
    what does the word FOZA mean, we have a similar word in german, it´s spelled “fotze”, but it´s not a word for little childs like you…

  4. lugi

    @uncle´09,)
    well, ok: forza isn´t perfect – but i can life with that fact. and well: it´s a game, it´s not reality – and even gt5 will be a game and not reality- sorry folks. but this article is pure bashing. i didn´t read the whole article, only to :”The ultra realistic physics” – hey, turn 10 NEVER said that – only all the journalists did.

    my only problem with forza is the ai settings (easy=too easy and hard=too hard), and the driving physics are a bit too easy with all the aids turned off)

    @zevehcj: I had no idea that you have so many problems;)

  5. danielwhite74

    That article was both entertaining and truthful. Thoroughly glad I’m not the only one to have fallen for Greenawalt’s bullshit.

  6. Dan Greenawalt

    What is this heresy? I swear, as soon as I figure out the gamertag linked to this blog, you’re getting banned. How dare you insult my definitive racer and my grand vision in such a way? Forza 3 really does have all the online options of FM2. I swear. And those hoppers are a huge success. Che says so, his neogaf twitter followers say so. Must be true. And our “perfect” AI says our PI system is without flaw. And all the glitches as you call them, well, that’s just the way games are, and we’re just a small developer who can’t really fix such things. You should be on your knees thanking me, DG, as the online racing hero I really am.

    Now, I’m off to go hype a photomode competition. Don’t you dare post anything at FM.net. I’ll sick my lapdogs on you and have you banned so fast it will make your head spin.

    These are the words of your benevolent god of sim racing. You’re all banned the second I find out whose gamertags are on here posting this nonsense. My vision was to create the definitive simulation racer and I have succeeded beyond even my wildest dreams. You all should be at my feet bowing at the alter of DG.

    I have created the ultimate definitive sim racing game. What other game can you get realistic AWD dominance, prototype cars with econobox engines and cheats so pervasive that even the worst of the worst can compete with the most talented players. If all that wasn’t enough, I’ve even provided all the 13 year old boys with anime porn and official DLC voting sites with naked women all over them. All across the world, little boys are putting aside their National Geographics and picking up Forza. I’m so proud.

  7. zevehcj

    @UCLA’09
    Thanks. I’ve never read that article before. It was an interesting read. I had no idea that game had so many problems.

  8. chris

    @ Alex, a polygon is a face made from minimum of 3 verts, verts are points, and edges form the face of the poly along with verts.

  9. Luke

    I wonder if cars in the side mirror are now high polygon models. This was not the case in GT5P, but it looks like this has been changed.

  10. UCLA'09

    @GT_Prologue5
    I do have my settings set to ‘update automatically.’ I was just surprised that PD did not make an official announcement about updating the graphics.

  11. Needmo

    @lugi I sat in a gts-r viper, and from the interior it looks just like this. Good luck with your racing experience.

  12. UCLA'09

    @lugi
    I just read an article called: “Forza Motorsports 3: what went wrong.” It was a very good article, you should read it.

    @d3br34k5 I remember complaining about the jaggies on top of the cars when watching the replays. For awhile, I noticed PD was trying to cover it up by blurring the edge of the cars with the background. Now, those jaggies are nearly gone.

  13. HaVoK_

    Way to show off the “Arcade” physics mode. I am sure that “professional” physics are not being used at all. Full throttle exits and a car like a viper (even stock) would swing the tail, and at least in this vid it is particularly absent.. I grow tired of seeing this gentlman’s videos. PD should be the ones showcasing their product…..Can anyone say 2011?

  14. lugi

    so, danielwhite74, then tell us a bit about forza´s problems…and by the way: you can adjust the camera angle in forza´s cockpitview!
    hope you can do that in gt5 too, because the driver of the viper seems to be very small, he nearly can´t looking over the steering wheel.

  15. d3br34k5

    I’ve been playing Prologue alot in the past week or so and haven’t noticed any significant upgrade to its graphics engine.

    I haven’t been asked to download or update anything either, so I doubt anything’s changed.

  16. BWX

    UCLA’09Says: “Have anyone else noticed that GT5 prologue has been updating on its own recently? The car no longer has jagged edges during the replays and I swear….”

    I haven’t played in a while, I’ll have to check that out. On my 52″ AQUOS I really see the jaggies in replays on the cars— Mostly where (SOME, not all) of the body panels come together. I see the jaggies bad in the menu screens with the 3D cars in the background scenes. If it’s Improved I’ll definitely know- the jaggies (lack of antialiasing or AA on some edges) bugs me more than just about anything else in GT5p. I even have to turn my sharpness control down to -4 because of that and the lack of AA is still hard to miss.
    I hope you’re right!

  17. iCyCo

    @nico_belic
    also if you check GTpsp you would have notice that though shadowed there are interior views for all cars

  18. Saif ali

    Mannn this game just gives me an errection everytime I look at it! You don’t say this for many games but this game looks better than real life!!

  19. cuarache_GTR

    @niko belic do you still not understand the term premium cars and the sentence “830 cars some of which have appeared in GT4” premium cars have damage on the interior thats the difference – an R34 GTR appeared gran turismo 2,3,4 and prologue and i have no doubt it’ll appear in GT5 who’s complaining

  20. dreadlockdragon

    @DYE_STICKY i’m with u on that sticky, ain’t nothing
    like having ur own music. we NEED that n GT5

  21. Niko_Belic

    170 premium models and 830 standard models from gt4. Does that mean that there will be no interiors for 830 cars ?! That sounds a bit stupid to me. For a game that was being made for 6 years or something.
    Im still a crazy fan of gran turismo, but this will seriously disappoint me and other fans.

    Gran turismo rules any way !!!!!!!

  22. Twinturbo120

    Is it just be or do I get the impression the man driving the car (in-game) is a short man? When I drive I’m used to seeing OVER the steering wheel under it -.-

  23. GT_Prologue5

    @UCLA’09:I think that theres a possibility that your updates are checking automatically. You can check this in the options. This may also mean that you haven’t been online recently. If you have, then I don’t have an answer.

  24. UCLA'09

    Have anyone else noticed that GT5 prologue has been updating on its own recently? The car no longer has jagged edges during the replays and I swear, I think PD has added new colors to some cars. For example, I don’t remember being able to buy a blue or blue/black 350z, until recently.

  25. GT_Prologue5

    I love the spin at the beginning it shows that Polyphony Digital is at work on the AI. Also, who’s Mimaximax? I want him to send me what he’s playing!

  26. Obli

    @iucidium
    GT5 pretty much looks the same as GT5:Prologue which has been out for a couple of years now. Graphical advantage over Forza has nothing to do with the extra time.

  27. Flagmo-T Aka Team_MoFF-No2

    A Great Effort from PD, The ring has got lots of work done, and that’s actually what we discussed month ago in this section, and PD/K.Y updated it.. Thanks for listing P.D/K.Y :O)

  28. iucidium

    ‘Johan Says:
    June 4th, 2010 at 12:19 pm

    I wonder how Gran turismo 5 would look like with out these delays??’
    like forza

  29. iucidium

    @UCLA’09
    wait till you ‘drive’ the cars with non-responsive dashboards…there are loads
    and the ford GT’s speedo shrinks to nothing as you reach top speed

  30. Luke

    @UCLA’09
    It`s because the driver in Forza sits directly in front of the steering wheel, maybe he is too small to sit further away ^^ That`s why i think the cockpit view in Forza is pretty unrealistic.

  31. E2K

    UCLA’09, i am sorry, but i have to correct you..

    The G in Gran Turismo does not stand for “Good”
    It stands for “Greatness” ;-)

  32. UCLA'09

    I played the Forza demo recently at a gamestop, and I was sooooo disappointed at the interior view. Why the heck is the steering wheel blocking the tachometer? Who drives with the steering wheel like that?? Forza starts with a ‘F’ for a reason: F=Fail.

    Gran Turismo: G=Good.

  33. Aspe

    But they did not (and I think they won’t) include skidmarks. And I don’t understand why then didn’t. :|

  34. icant55

    Just look @ it and watch how it moves when the guy is accelerating and braking… its crazy!!!!

  35. ElieTheBear

    cockpit view, rally, nascar, online, licenses, 1000 cars, damage, night racing,etc. !!! can’T wait

  36. Ravenmaven

    Hmmm…exagerrated body roll on a low center of gravity car. Viper looks like it handles like a Chevrolet Caprice. Typical.

  37. Shokz

    @ Forza Sucks and Steady Dave – If you open your eyes and read the post, you’ll see he was talking about the physics engine, not the actual framerate of the game.

  38. Pedro_CZ

    I don’t mind anymore that everything around the track is last gen 2D, I DO mind, that it’s in low resolution.It looks really bad.I don’t get why PD doesn’t spend the power of ps3 for the vegetation, instead of wasting power of ps3 in bad looking people, cars, tents etc around the track:( I would rather have good looking trees(easily 2D, who cares, but in HI RESOLUTION-the textures are really psx-like), instead of last gen looking track’s surroundings.
    And of course, the horrible interior shadows should be definitely fixed before the game’s release.

  39. Luke

    Good sound would be great in this vid. WOuld be a great comparision with the Viper engine sound from GT5P.

  40. danielwhite74

    What “delays?” Gran Turismo 5 was only ever “delayed” once, when the release date was pushed back from May to late 2010.

  41. FORZA_SUCKS

    @danielwhite74
    GT5p runs at 60 frames per second. GT psp runs at 60 frames per second
    look it up before u open ur mouth

  42. Geo_212

    @Guffaluff
    Oh, okay, so Forza 3’s interior have I think around 100,000 polygons, no wonder why there’s almost no detail :P

  43. danielwhite74

    BWX, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue used the same physics engine as GT4, which only ran at 30 frames per second, as opposed to 60.

  44. danielwhite74

    Vehicles have always spun out in the same manner that the Corvette in this video does. In previous Gran Turismo titles, traction control and stability control were turned on as default – although they could be disabled in Arcade Mode races, thus meaning cars would spin out when crashed into.

  45. danielwhite74

    Geo_212, a polygon is essentially a triangle used to build 3-dimensional models. As you can probably gather, the more polygons a model contains, the more detailed it is.

  46. hank87

    @ Bolg

    Wow, I laughed at this! Still, I agree completely:

    “And if the penalty system isn’t massively improved Kaz will get a PS3 in the face.”

  47. Zuel

    I really enjoyed this latest video, after a closer look at the track map I noticed some shadows that represents sand traps and drive off areas. Now that’s a very new nice touch. I wonder what else we’ll see.

  48. BWX

    wow, to me it looks as if the physics engine is running at a higher speed compared tp GT5p and some of the other demo vids we’ve seen lately. Mabe it’s just the steering wheel that looks like it’s moving faster or something, but the whole thing looks more fluid and responsive. Can’t wait to play a demo or something…

    A couple little things, at 4:25 you see sparkes warp through the car body… hope they fix that.. And it looks like the steering wheel is in the “up” position and needs to be tilted to the down position.. like 2 inches too high. Oh well..

    Overall this vid is impressive- looks like it’s showing off some really big physics improvements, I wish they would go into a little bit more detail and tell us what they’ve obviously been working on.

  49. LoneWanderer

    even having crowds on the side is a huge slap to the face to Forza. the fruit is coming this year, guys

  50. SL00

    Great video, some of the best i’ve seen so far… but, enough for laps turns spins yada yada yada… I wan’t news pics vids about day-night cycle and weather changes and visuals off all that !!!

  51. Wiretap

    That slide he does at around 3:40 mark looks lovely.

    Just enough to make it a challenge, but controllable enough to make it fun.

    This equals Perfect!

  52. dreadlockdragon

    as soon as GT5 hits the stores, i’m going 2 take vacation
    2 get n2 this game lol ;)

  53. CeeJay

    Game looks fabulous but… I gotta nitpick. Only 8 cars? Man, these are going to be some SUPER empty races on the big tracks.

  54. UCLA'09

    Did they improve the trees? or did this camera just hid the cut-out trees better? I hope it’s the first case, because I couldn’t stand the cut-out trees the first time these videos came out.

  55. Zundel

    I would just really like A change from the ever prominent digital heads up display to the option for the cars instruments only with mybe a lap timer built into the dashboard to keep with the details of the true racing experience, idk?

  56. brettjr25

    Oh god, pit maneuver is functional. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad physics work the way it does and how it’s suppose to but I remember all those times I played GT5P online and if you’re neck and neck with someone and closing in on the finish they’ll collide with you and try to shake your balance…even the good drivers. I guess I can look forward to the 5 second before finish pit maneuver! Hopefully we get online penalties that effect race rank/time.

  57. Alex

    one polygon is one vector and a vector is a strait line. for example a ball my have 100 vectors an look blocky but if u model the ball with 1000 vectors it will appear rounder / smoother . that’s polygons

  58. AwaitingGT5

    Either I am very tired today or I am suffering from VCF (Video Clip Fatigue), but I am not excited by this clip at the moment. I will have to revisit it tomorrow.
    The footage looks very nice.
    Yes, thanks to Mimaximax for the footage! :)

  59. terminator363

    WOW! good footage! Also that pit manuever was fanrastic! Looks like the physics are being IMPROOOOOVED!

  60. Guffaluff

    Not only spin, the rear end of the ‘vette came off the ground, it actually lifted :P. Man I hope rollover makes it in the game, would be a nice feature.

  61. Guffaluff

    @Geo_212

    I’m no expert, but to make it simple, the more polygons in a 3d model, the more detail you get. To compare, Gran Turismo 4 had around 4000-6000 polygons per car, so you can see the difference ;).

    About the video, I´m liking it! The collision physics seem to be leaps ahead of what we have seen before, and the physics seem tight!

  62. Geo_212

    What exactly does it mean to have like, “500,000 polys”? (if it’s spelled that way) I know it has to do with the graphics in a way….

  63. F1P1

    Detailed and gorgeous. Can’t imagine how many hours I’ll be dedicating to Nurburgring alone; how awe inspiring it will be in different cars, from proper race cars, to the classics, etc. Cannot wait!

  64. icant55

    @ FlareKR: its one of the two! they’re everywhere this game is and they have extensive time with it…Mimaximax/kaz/translator thanx for the vids, we hope the game drops real soon.

    Mimaximax=( SONY’S STIG)

  65. FlareKR

    @ icant55

    Lol, that’s my guess, though if it was the translator, the guy inside the Viper would be playing Suduko :D!
    At least I have enough games to keep waiting now, ModNation Racers, Midnight Club LA, FFXIII, MAG, Uncharted 2…
    Hell I can wait till Christmas for this game (how many Christmases has it been waiting for this game).

  66. noname

    Nicely improved there! Though, I dont like the AI that much really. Not specifically on this video, but other videos where you see the Enzo Ferrari being overtaken by a far slower car (that you are driving). The Enzo Ferrari should be a challenging competitor when you are sitting in a mercedes SLR.

  67. Ethan Kerr

    Gran Turismo has always been ahead of Forza as far as graphics go, but this. Is. AWESOME!! :D

    I wish PD would finish the damn game already. I think we’re all getting tired of playing Prologue.

  68. Patrick

    How come in every video ive seen so far on the game the person driving is always last….. Are the ai that difficult?

  69. Mickle Pickle

    jimbo, you lag man, because in the MFJ… hum i meant GT5, sparks will be flying here and there…

  70. SPM

    Goodness. This vid is one of the best I’ve seen in a while! Can’t wait..

    @Razor.. Maybe the ACR is different?

  71. jimbo

    Also at 4.25 he hits the wall, and sparks come off the car. I havent noticed this in previous demos. Is this new?

  72. jimbo

    The games really starting to come together. As a couple have pointed out, he crashed into the Vet and span it round, opposed to just ‘pushing’ it out like on previous GT.

    Also has any one noticed there is a MUCH better sense of uphill and downhill, and helmet moves around at the bottom of hill with the force applied to the neck.

    This game is going to be amazing. Despite bad press about 3D, i think racing games (GT5 specifically) will be of the few games on PS3 where 3D will work.

  73. ralph89

    And I think that’s not even the stock tires for the ACR, more like R1 – R3. Even though the real ACR had some sticky tires, compare to this video, he’s probably using a Racing tires, you can see how he manage to avoid crashing and spin outs in 3:25. That is one of the hardest turn at Nurburgring! And you can see he’s just flooring it So IMO that’s a racing tires he’s using.

  74. AMC

    The ring has improved a lot compared to the past version, it looks great and they managed to capture some of that race day excitement with the huge crowds near the fence and tents everywhere, also I spotted an ambulance sitting on the side before flug platz. Conclusion, the ring no longer looks deserted and sterile. Great job PD, hope all the tracks receive this treatment in the full game.

  75. Razor

    I see one small detail that has to be fixed: rpm drop (tacho needle drop) after gear change is too fast and instant. Should be slower (and depending on engine tune level too).

  76. brumbrum

    i’m affraid you don’t really want to hear that v10 :(
    collision physics look amazing though

  77. tyl0r_r

    it’s funny watching someone drive a layout you’ve memorized from other games in a much more beautiful environment.

    i want gt5 now so it can be me : ).

  78. S3 Racer

    wow!!!!

    I hate watching clips like that, makes me too eager to play gt5!!!

    But the physics looks great, as we know from the latest vids from mima, he ain´t a bad driver so …

    Loved how the car reacted at flugplatz & fuchsröhre.

    And the entry on the green hell LOL (so obvious)

    E3 is near!! Hopefuly as is GT5 (finger crossed for a summer holiday release)

    Man Furismo Jive for live!

  79. Dom

    I stoped reading when I read ‘Mimaximax’ (which is the first word in the article).
    No offence, but this are not the news/infos why I come to this site. Bring some real infos and news, not the same stuff over and over again.

    1. Jordan

      Dom, you’re reading “GTPlanet”, where I excessively cover every detail about the GT series – I kind of have to, given that’s the only thing I blog about… If you don’t want that, I suggest you stick to the official GT site at gran-turismo.com, which is updated a few times a year for major announcements.

  80. marcus

    still frustrated about change times. Takes 3 seconds for the hand to go back to the wheel.
    Jordan do you know when a full vehicle list for gt5 will be featured. is the f1 the only mclaren or is the mp4 12c included

  81. Mickle Pickle

    Thanks Jordan and MiMaximax! Lucky him, to have the time and the means to just go around the world just for that… i wonder what he is going to do once the game is released… Play it i would guess… Cant wait for the release date…

  82. Bolg

    Really fed up of waiting for this game now, my PS3 is just sitting there gathering dust waiting for the big day.

  83. Paulo

    WOW, the Vette actually spun out when it was hit! Huge improvement over the brick wall effect of past GT games.

  84. Wayne

    The cockpit camera seems have been improved =D
    The speed effect too =D
    It also looks like the track looks more realistic and colored !

    Can’t wait for this game !!

    1. Jordan

      Not an insider, Mickle, just a determined GT fan who travels the world to record HD videos of the latest demos for us. :)
