Fan-Made Assetto Corsa Video Shows How Well DualShock 4 Functions on PC

After Kunos posted their own video highlighting how Assetto Corsa controls with a regular gamepad on console, many fans of the game on PC felt it wasn’t very representative of how the game actually behaves with a controller.

The main accusation is that the driving on the wheel was purposely worse than the controller to make driving appear closer than it actually would be between the two control methods. On the back of this, GTPlanet member G.T.Ace has put together a video showing gameplay on the PC version as driven with a Dualshock 4 in the same conditions of the original video.

The description of the video indicates that in terms of driving aids, ABS and TCS were on factory default with default tuning settings also applied to the car. This increases the integrity of the video as we, the viewer, know that we aren’t oblivious to what settings the car is actually being driven under. G.T.Ace doesn’t consider himself “a very talented driver” and yet beats the times in the initial video comfortably.

Although the original video was useful, this latest drive provides more evidence that those playing with a regular controller should not worry about having to mess around with settings and calibration controls that would distract from the actual gameplay experience. Thanks to G.T.Ace for putting this video together!

I’ve never been elite speed wise. I can be smooth enough to not be lapped. I started out as many have using a controller. And I was not bad. After buying a G27 mid way through GT 5’s run I soon was unable to use a controller.

I tried the D-pad in Project Cars and Assetto Corsa. In both cases if I were to attempt to race in an on-line lobby, the members would be crying for my head within 3 minutes.
Again, I’m not a top driver. But you don’t have to be to realize that the current crop of games were made to be played with sim wheels.

I have on-line friends who are alien with the D-pad. I’ll try Assetto and PCars once more with a controller prior to my T300 arriving. Maybe the controller code has been optimized.
But I think I’ll still suck wit a D-pad even worse than I suck with a wheel.
The good news is sim racing has never been better.

Same here. Since switching to a wheel exclusively I’m crap with the D-pad. Mad props to those that can drive smooth and fast in a sim like this with the pad.

Funny thing that no one mentions in this wheel vs. pad debate. If you go through the leaderboards on RSR, before the resets when there were hundreds of times on some combinations, you’d find that most users had a wheel. The other thing you find is, even in spite of people almost always using a wheel, there is a huge spread in lap times. In the most popular current combination there is a 4 second spread just from from 1st to 50th and that’s on a 90 second lap time. What it tells me is that, first and foremost, skill + practice + tuning + knowledge of car physlcs and behaviour are by far more important than your input device. What holds most people back with the pad is the same thing that holds most people back with a wheel, that is, they don’t use the whole track and they don’t know how to carry speed through the corner and get on the throttle as early as possible nearly as well as the best drivers do.

This game meant to be played with a 900 degree racing wheel… At least g25, and t300 integral Alcantara in best case scenario… Anyone with controller can play need for speed, gt or assetto corsa, there is no difference…. Not like I’m hating or anything, just saying these sim games are meant to be together with racing wheel… Different game, and whole experience. Not to mention that after controller it gets about 1 to 2 years of practice to get the same speed levels, so better start faster… I’m on wheels for 8 years, never picked up controller after that…

I couldn’t agree more. I have had this game since it was first available on Steam. And although the controls have gotten better with a pad over the years it is still far behind Forza and GT5 as far as racing with a controller goes.

you can certainly be extremely fast with a controller though if you have a game such as assetto corsa that has great controller support. You have people topping leader boards with it or dominating in races. Wheels do feel nice but disregard controllers at your peril, there are people that are outstanding with it

The game is meant to be played the way you wanna play it. And Im sure less than 3% of PS4 owners have a driving wheel. Kunos is a small team that spent alot of time and money on this game so if they wanna make money from it then they need to properly support controllers.

It never ceases to amaze me how good people can drive with a controller. As a wheel user who has tried, I have much respect for those that can.

Well done GTAce. Smoother with a controller than a lot of guys are with a wheel. Many players in the official forum have reported that the game is excellent with a controller as well.

Well that is interesting… I have never used my DS4 on PC or with Forza 6 Apex… But I can tell you that the X1 controller works flawlessly on PC with Forza and on AC it’s is crap. I suppose I should try the DS4 with AC and see if it is in fact better than with the X1 controller… Mind you both with pale compared to the Fanatec CSWv2… Which is how i play AC 95% of the time anyway…..
