I cannot even imagine the plane mission on Veteran. And I just realized how dumb it is to have a gunfight on a plane in the first place!

I can't imagine ALL OF THOSE GUYS AND GUNS being on a plane. Did someone lay off airport security?

I saw that you were playing the game the other day Ebiggs, are you gonna start playing online anytime soon?

Excellent post Beerz!! I'm about 14 headshots from red camo for the RPD. I'm also about 30 headshots away with the P90.

I just got my blue camo on my MP5, super excited when i got it, looks like a toy gun now! woot!

Awesome write up Beerz, very well writen. Great info also I haven't used sonic boom yet, but if I get round to using the grenade launcher again I am certainly going to equip it.

On a side note, I have used the M21 sniper very effectively on showdown, last presitige I tried to marksman every weapon I got bored of waiting for maps for snipers and equiped my sniper for showdown. I got a 21 - 7. Nobody expects a sniper. :D

Though it was a sabotage map so I could pretty much garentee the direction the enemy would approach from.

Nice one though, it took me forever to read, so god knows how long it took to write

I can fully understand why they are going to fix the sniper's accuracy in a future update now... I used the M40A3 for the first time properly today and some of the shots I done CLEARLY went straight through the enemy's chest. Not just once, but a couple of times... he was standing still too!

Thats a really great and detailed write up Beerz! 👍 It's always good to have a look at the perks recommended for each weapon that others have vouched for and could be useful to me! .. if I ever break away from the RPD /grip / UAV jammer and Extreme conditioning set up I use every time I play :sly:

Still I will surely be tempted by one of those set ups someday and will give you some feedback either way! if they work or dont work for me
Thanks for taking the time mate ;)

Awesome right up as usual Beerz. I trust you don't mind if I add it to the "gun strategies" thread.

Edit.....

Ok so added the SMG and perk related stuff the CoD4 gun strategies thread, you know just so it serves as a more complete reference for future use. Do you guys think we should even bother breaking out the map stuff into another thread? I know the other map threads that were put together didn't seem to get a whole lot of traffic.

Thanks a lot for the positive input, guys, I appreciate it. 👍
Yeah, it took a while to write. But I did it a bit at a time, so it wasn't hard work.

icelt - Sure I don't mind. Also, it would probably be a good idea to put all map/weapon/etc info on that one thread, so it's faster for anyone to search for something.
I was thinking you could rename it so it suits all discussion related to advices, tactics, weapons, map spots... What do you think?

PS: I'll probably get Countdown ready tomorrow night.

I just went 11/3 at Bloc on HTDM... And all 11 were in succession - including two from airstrikes and three from the HeLo... I've never got a streak going at Bloc before.

Then I went on to Strike - took a nice position opposite "that" building, took aim with the Barrett and gunned down 5 enemies going for the steps by the side of it in the first 40 seconds. No-one shot anyone else, then Connection Error. D'OH!

I have to start playing something other than HCTD its getting boaring lmao

Soooo... finally it looks like someone has been able to dig up some real insight as to the lag problems everyone is seeing (to one degree or another). From the IW PS3 forum:

The Reasons Why COD 4 lags
posted by oktober on 2/19/08 at 7:00am

A lot of you are wondering why is this game full of lag or latency, the problem is P2P gaming doesn't work for large hardcore applications. P2P is a cost effective way to avoid using dedicated servers and instead treat the players as the servers. P2P might work but IW can not regulate/ optimize everybody's router and internet connections and so it does not work because of poor quality connections.

The kicker being that if everyone is running great and one guy comes in with a crap connection the game is only as strong as it weakest connection (IE you join a game from L.A. and get put in a match in FRANCE tho you may have a great internet in the US your signal will be so weak by the time it reaches France that you create lag for everyone in the game and not intentionally, (worst part is you do not know its you making the game lag for everyone else).)

The next gem in the IW crown is producing game that requires a signal stronger than DSL. that right DSL is not good enough for this game, unless the letters I received from two different tech support guys saying so are wrong. I went to Activision to complain about the lag since IW was not doing anything in hopes of getting an answer or a solution and they gave me answers.

Activision responses to Lag and P2P gaming

Response 01

Hello and thank you for contacting Activision Customer Support,

Please note that the matchmaking service that the game uses does make it so that if there are users that are laggy, they will affect the other users in the game. The matchmaking mode of online gameplay was the way that the developers intended for the game to be played. There was a great surge in the amount of players since the Christmas Season so you may be playing with players that have less than optimal connections for the online portion of the game.

Response 02

Thank you for contacting Activision’s Technical Support. I'm sorry to hear about your problem. This game uses peer to peer connections, meaning that if you are playing in a match with a persion with a very slow connection, it doesn't matter how fast yours is, because the other player cannot send/receive information as fast as you can. Your upload is limited to 480 kilobits, which is equivalent to 60 kilobytes. That is actually very high for upload, however most DSL users are limited to 128 kilobits which is 16 kilobytes. Sixteen kb is not sufficient to support large games and leads to many problems. This is what creates most of the lag in games.

Many users are using routers which are poorly configured or people do not realize that other people are using their connection too at the same time. If you are trying to play when someone in your household starts uploading files or pictures to a website, it will severely impact your gameplay.

On top of that, many ISPs implement port throttling or packetshaping during "peak hours" which further hinder the game and people's connections.

The developers are working on improving the game as seen on the PS3 portion of the developer forums. However, there are a lot of issues like those addressed above that are out of the hands of the devs and reliant on the user and their ISP.

I have since done a little research and there are papers all over talking about how this "COULD" be great technology once the web is ready for it but is not because of distance restrictions. realistically this game should be broken down into small regions and you only play people in those regions like eastern US or western US (maybe even smaller) but IW did not do a good job beta testing so we instead get huge amounts of lag or latency. Below are some rundowns on Netcode from DemonWare.

DemonWare Rundowns of Netcode

Client/Server Games (What we should have)

In a client/server game, network traffic about game state (e.g., the positions of players in the game world) flows according to a radial-topology (see right). All the players send information to the server about what they are doing, and the server sends information back down to all clients about each other. The server is the final authority about what happens in the game. It is common to make it possible for a player's computer to also act as the server whilst he/she is playing the game. This avoids the need for having a lot of dedicated computer resources in a server farm.

Draw Backs

Each game needs a server

Difficult to continue game if server crashes or disconnects

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Games

In a peer-to-peer game, game traffic flows directly from each connected computer to every other connected computer (see left). Each player sends information to every other player about what he/she is doing, and steps are taken to ensure that every player uses this information in exactly the same way to produce exactly the same results. It is necessary that every peer agree exactly about what happens in the game because there is no authority to perform corrections.

Draw Backs

Responsiveness determined by slowest peer (good for RTS and games where latency can be disguised)

Does not scale well (< 16 players on DSL)

Edit----
Yeah beerz that is probably the best plan at this point. Then I can do what mclaren suggested and just make the 1st post list the hyperlinks to each topic for easier access. I still think this game deserves a subforum, but alas that battle already was fought and lost. I'll try to get that done in the next few days.

Beerz - excellent write-ups as always - great stuff

I've had some of my best kill streaks on Bloc, one of my favorite maps; it also sounds as if you are talking about on of my favorite spots on strike as well. The roof top with the oil tank on it, gives a great view of the rest of the map and good cover as well.

Some DLC related rumours, the following are apparently the locations of the 'new' maps that will form the DLC.

Hill

As I said, it is just rumour at present, but I would be happy enough with them, particularly Hill, which has the potential to be another Overgrown; Broadcast could be interesting as well.

Yes! It's turned up!! But I got to do some homework first...:(

At last! Finally reached the max rank goal: :)

I've got over 12 days already, apart from the GT series I don't think I've ever played anything that much in such short time...

Scaff - Those links you posted aren't working for me. Are those screenshots of the maps?

Hopefully those work.

Hill is definitely one of the locations I thought a map could be. I guess there will be more since in the IGN interview IW said they will be creating some all-new maps not in the campaign.

I must apologize for my quick exit from the game i was in with Steve @ Overgrown, I had no sooner started playing my first game and the front door clunked open and in walked 6 relatives in one group  had to end it straight away as I had no chance of playing with all the noise :( sorry about that mate .. looking forward to getting back in on a GTP match again 👍
Cheers
Ron.

Well I have learnt a few things in my 4 hours or so of playing CoD4.

Firstly, I've got to admit I'm no expert at shoot 'em ups, infact, I don't think I'm anything but a rookie. I felt as though the controls might have been difficult, however I found them very easy to pick up. The only minor probelm I have is that I tend to hit R2 instead of R1, which as you all should know..launches a grenade...not what I wanted. Other than that I think the controls were simple to pick up, which makes it great for a rookie like me.

Secondly, the graphics are...phenomenal. I love every element of it, I can't really ramble on about the graphics because I'm sure its all been said before, I think they are great.

Thirdly, the story line is quite involving, it gets off to a great start and the it certainly isn't a confusing story line. Personally, I prefer being the SAS to the US Marines but thats personal preference.

Finally, I need some training on online mode..I got killed thousands of times in the first 30 seconds. So yeah..if anyone would like to teach me the ropes of online without slaughtering me, please feel free...

Thanks, G.T. 👍

I agree, as it was exactly what I thought/hoped for when I read the interview.
Scaff's right, Hill is like a brand new Overgrown, but with a tougher terrain. Great choice for a new map. More places to hide too.
Also, Broadcast is probably the most requested to be made into a new map, most people on COD forums that gave suggestions mentioned it. It should probably be to play like Vacant, but more open and with 1st floors. :D

They also mentioned that they were going to have some bigger maps at the request of many snipers, and of these 3, Hill would be my pick. Especially because there are very few maps available where the ghillie suit is put to use, one of those being Downpour, where sight lines are short and not very sniper-friendly, and this one would be perfect for it, with the grass, the trees, the elevations on the terrain and whatnot. Hope it's really big too.

EDIT:

speedster - when are you available for a guided tour and online tips? Whenever you can, I'll be at home all night. Post here if I'm offline on the PS3 (I can only have either the PC or the PS3 online at a time for now).

Yep, I am going to send you a PSN freind invitation. When you accept it go back into COD4 and When I see you appear online I will invite you to a private match and just show you some of the maps.

[edit] freind invitation sent

Erm..I'll see, I tell you when I'm available I have no particular plans so I suppose any night will do.

I'll accept next time I hop on the PS3, I'm currently not on it, but should be on the morning. Thanks for your kind help though :D

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it probably be best to do online tours once my headset turns up..cause I have no way of communication at the moment..

I think it would be cool if they made the map where you are chasing the guys son through the apartment, into a level, just the apartment bit, so it would be super close quarters, maybe with a few sniping parts on the outside.

From,
Chris.

Those maps look like they would be fun, although Dusk reminds me alot of Bog which I do not really enjoy, hopefully they keep their word and add in more sniper 'friendly' maps and points in the DLC.

Speedster: I also enjoyed playing as the SAS a lot more, it didn't really matter to me the country or language of the team just the SAS missions and characters seemed a bit more indepth and I enjoyed playing the Russian type levels opposed to Urban Middle-Eastern style maps that the Marines go through. Both however offer great fun.

Boy I really like the thought of Hill going online. Although the mission was pretty much a PITA, I really enjoyed the layout. I would assume that getting control of the high ground here will likely be very advantageous. Also it'd be kinda cool if the made the door mounted M134 gatling gun (i'm guessing) on the downed blackhawk active. Sure with the very narrow firing arc it would not really be all that effective, but it sure would be dang cool to hear every once in awhile! It'd also make a great kill cam too for those times you could pull it off.

JFF (btw it should be the one that sounds like a chainsaw)

One more thing: if you use the RPD on a regular basis, try and get the red camouflage on it. As it is easily (at least) one of the best looking weapons on the game with it, seeing as some don’t look good with the red/grey tiger pattern. Of course, this doesn’t make the weapon any better (although some people swear it’s power increases with each camo up to a point where you don’t even have to shoot to get kills, just aim at them), just cooler and different.

Got it today. :D I completed three challenges in that match; RPD Expert III, Prone Shot III, and Misery Loves Company III. Which I think adds up to a nice 1500 XP. I'll be on tonight (GMT -8 for me) so I might see some of you peepz. :p

Oh and the other day, I managed to do the challenge where you have to kill an enemy by throwing a grenade at him. Pure luck, too. A guy ran up after I had thrown the grenade, someone else shot him and put him into last stand, then my grenade hit him in the head and killed him.

And how are you supposed to get a two kill streak in midair?

I suppose you could throw a grenade and jump when you think it's going to blow up... Might be a little hard but it's easier than anything else.

Edit: Just realised it's with bullets...

And how are you supposed to get a two kill streak in midair?

Haven't completed this one myself yet, but from what I've read on the IW forums you don't have to kill 2 people at one time during a single jump (although I imagine even that is technically possible). Rather you just have to kill two people in a row using the jump shoot technique. So "jump/shoot/kill, run run run, jump/shoot/miss, run run run, jump/shoot/hit/no kill, run run run, jump/shoot/kill" should result in completing the challenge. From what I've read....
