This is kind of skins I want to see.

A mix of both modern and future stuff.

Haven't been this excited for a game since Battlefield 1. I'm staying away from all the new gameplay video's, I want to be completely overwhelmed when I play my first game.
I pre ordered right after the reveal trailer stream. The beta can't come soon enough!

Anybody else try the open beta? The game looks and feels great, I just need to get all the controls sorted out.

Yeah, I've been getting blasted. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the big maps, I prefer smaller matches (32-64 player).

Looks great on XSX. New class system is questionable. Lack of mouse and keyboard controls on XSX is big NO for me.

Dont think I would buy it at release, most likely would wait till 30/50% deals

Playing on base PS4, kept getting huge stuttering and frame drops after playing for a while.

Obviously there are the usual bugs and glitches associated with a beta which I think can be ignored.

However, I'm really not a fan of the way they've done the HUD for this. I found myself shooting at friendlies quite frequently thinking they were enemies and not shooting at enemies thinking they were friendlies which isn't being helped by the specialists which aren't team specific. In the first few games I kept losing sight of the objectives (as if the icon had disappeared), once I learnt the map, I still couldn't tell which sub objectives we did and didn't hold. The whole kill feed and points feed is annoying as well, you have to look at opposite sides of the screen to see both feeds as the kill feed is on the far left and the points feed is on the far right.

I'm not sure I like the new class and specialist system. As mentioned above, its one less visual indicator as to what team someone's on, but I also now have no idea who's carrying med bags or ammo crates or repairs tools, so who am I supposed to walk around spamming ammo requests when I run out of ammo (which seems to happen very frequently as well). Alternatively, who on the enemy team is likely to be carrying a rocket launcher or C4. Then there's the weapons system where anyone can carry any weapon, so you could have the lady with the stim pistol, ammo bag and an assault rifle (so a player with infinite health regen, unlimited ammo and the strongest weapon class in the game). It just seems like a balancing nightmare and makes it more difficult to evaluate the threat level of different enemies.

I have other comments, however in the interest of not typing out an essay, I'll leave it there.

Overall, I enjoyed playing the beta, I think this battlefield has potential to be quite good if they make some adjustments. Some of my concerns, I don't expect to be resolved as they seem to be core elements of the game, but it would be nice to at least have the HUD adjustments made.

My thoughts after a good amount of hours playing.

  1. It feels really arcade-like. I don't know how else to put it. BF1 and V were very gritty and rough feeling, like you felt like you were in the battle. I miss that in this game so far. Those previous mentioned games feel more realistic and immersive.
  2. The audio is way too boring. The voice lines are cringy and quiet. BFV's really felt like a commander was screaming in your ear. Also when just running around, there's barely any sound. Just faint gunshots in the distance. Explosions get cut out and air vehicles are basically just silent. The music from BF1 and V are what made the games amazing to me. We barely have any game music here.
All these things make it feel like you're just playing alone. I don't feel like I'm playing an online game with other people. Most of my time has been spent running to an objective, maybe seeing 2 or 3 enemies on the way and either dying or being too far to engage. I don't have the feeling that there's a massive battle going on around me, because there just isn't.

Last thing I want to point out. I don't know if this is because it's early acces, but I feel like I'm only playing against bots. Pretty much everyone just uses the standard AR and I haven't even seen a single sniper yet.

The gun play itself is also quite mediocre at best. Again, the sounds are just not good in my opinion. Same thing for the rocket launch. There's no music or announcer or whatever to indicate something is about to go down. I've seen it a couple times now and tbh, if you don't pay attention to it, you won't even notice it.

This is just a beta and I still have full trust in Dice. Immersion is for me priority number 1 and with the way the game is right now, it just isn't there.

Where is the scoreboard? I played a good amount of games now and I cannot find it. Relating to that, why do we get thrown back to the main menu the second the games finished? No podium like BFV, or a scoreboard overview, nothing. The HUD and UI in general is just plain garbage. I cannot see where any objectives are and I'll often just walk around aimlessly. There's also no sense of competitiveness. In previous installments I'd be rushing to objectives, healing teammates and really playing for the objective. There's absolutely none of that right now. The game feels like a cheap rip off and just soulless.

Performance wise it's not the best either, but I'll cut Dice some slack since this is still a beta. I feel like I should mention it though. There are a lot and I mean a lot, of visual and graphical bugs. The elevator in the big tower is glitchy as hell and when you see other players land, they'll merge into the ground before returning to normal. I also wonder how many frames I'm getting. I'm playing on a PS5 and it doesn't feel like much more than 40 or 50. That has to change.

Another thing I wish they hadn't done is the new classes system. The old class system identified and differentiated the series from other FPS. Why would they change that to a system that has been heavily criticised by countless other games? I really don't see the appeal in playing as a super soldier instead of a true soldier, among other soldiers identified by their class (medic, scout, assault and support). It's especially stupid when you play as like Boris the Destroyer whilst there are 30+ other Boris the Destroyers on the map.
The issue that come with this is that everyone looks the same. Battlefield always made the players compremise classes for weapons or med pack/ammo etc. This way there was rarely one class that was super dominent. Now everyone will just use the meta class, as there are no weapons restrictions per class. This change really pisses me off, also because there's just no way to fix it at this late stage of developement. We just have to hope this system doesn't return in future titles...

I'm actually getting nervous and almost scared for launch. If this is really it, I'll be so so disappointed. It'll be Cyberpunk all over again. I'd much rather have this game delayed again, I don't really matter for how long, it could be March or June, if that means we get the game in a really good state, significantly better than this beta, I'm willing to wait. Curious to see how Dice will fix this.

Thanks for listening to my essay.

I probably share a lot of the same sentiments as you, and playing the beta killed whatever hype I had for this game. I know this isn't the end all be all, but there's just too many opinions on the internet for them to appreciate the voices of the veterans.

I think there is alot of potential in Portal. With enough fine-tune it could be great BF4 successor.

While I'm interested in the game, I'll probably wait it out until my friends jump on board to next gen. Don't really care to play games like this by myself.

After some time has passed and more has been revealed on the game, I suppose I should update my essay a bit.

Last thing I want to point out. I don't know if this is because it's early acces, but I feel like I'm only playing against bots. Pretty much everyone just uses the standard AR and I haven't even seen a single sniper yet. They've addressed this issue and it has been fixed in newer builds.

This is probably due to the fact that it's an older build of the game, an August branch actually. Since then they've changed a lot and audio is something that will be fixed.

This is just a beta and I still have full trust in Dice. Immersion is for me priority number 1 and with the way the game is right now, it just isn't there. My point still stands on this.

Where is the scoreboard? I played a good amount of games now and I cannot find it. Relating to that, why do we get thrown back to the main menu the second the games finished? There's also no sense of competitiveness. In previous installments I'd be rushing to objectives, healing teammates and really playing for the objective. There's absolutely none of that right now. The game feels like a cheap rip off and just soulless. This has also been addressed. The launch build will have a podium like end screen, with a scoreboard. Also a bigger map is coming that you can open, not sure if it'll be there at launch.

This is also that has been noticed by Dice. This is also the reason why so many features were missing from the beta build, to optimise performance.

Another thing I wish they hadn't done is the new classes system. The old class system identified and differentiated the series from other FPS. Why would they change that to a system that has been heavily criticised by countless other games? I still stand firmly on this. On the other hand, we can just make our own servers in Portal and simply restrict specialists or use the classes from the previous games. Portal will be the best mode that has come to a Battlefield game for sure.

Curious to see how Dice will fix this. Not really that scared anymore, there are tons of reasons to be hyped for the game, but I'm definitely not as hyped as I was before the Beta. Dice have addressed a lot of feedback in their recent briefing post and whilst I don't agree with some of the decisions that were made, I still have trust in them that this game will be one of the best of the year.

Thanks for listening to my essay.

Cancelled my pre order today. All the negativity around this game before it’s even released is a red flag. I’m going to wait this one out.

If I had not pre ordered this game when it was just announced all those months ago, I would've waited as well. BF4 also had a shockingly poor launch and was only how we remember after about a year, I'm hoping that can happen to 2042. It kinda happened with 5, at least for me personally. I didn't like it much when it just came out, but when I started playing again this year, I absolutely loved it! BF2042 can still be a really good game, but Dice has to work extra hard for it to happen and I doubt they will. All we can do is wait and see what happens. I'm still excited to play this game on Friday.

Think I will still pick it up day one as struggling to find something to play at the moment.

Having no cross play party chat at launch is ridiculous though 🤦 all my FPS friends are on PC.

Seems to run buttery smooth on PS5 so that is my main concern eased.

And I have played 10 hour trial from EA Access, and decided to keep my pre-order. I love this game. There are lot's of bugs yes, but I still have fun playing it.

Same here, I had a spare hour last night and had a conquest round at Caspian Border and Noshar Canals for the nostalgia. The game shows good promise.

Playing a good amount over the last week I've been a bit of a rollercoaster of enjoyment. A lot of games are bugged, so I have maybe 2/5 that are playable, but overall it's not that bad. Portal is a huge let down since it's just limited weapons for each era. And Conquest is actually too big to be any fun. Breakthrough has been pretty fun though, at least exciting.

The Steam customer reviews are not looking good, and the user scores on metacritic for the ps5 version aren't any better. Pretty disappointed with how this is going but I'm also not surprised. To be fair though, BF4 was also a mess at launch but it turned out to be my favorite fps of all time. It took Dice like 2 years to fix and balance it though.

To be honest i wouldn't judge this game based on user reviews. Most of them are overreaction of frustrated players.
Yeah game has problems it is undeniable. But it isn't crap as some people say with this user reviews. Game is fun to play but buggy and unbalanced. If you love battlefield but can't stand that it isn't working 100% correctly i would suggest waiting couple of months, and I am pretty sure that it will end up as every Battlefield game. Every BF had problems from start and end up pretty good even BF V.

Also remeber BF IV launch? It was disaster. Much bigger than BF 2042. And now a lot of critics praise BF IV as one of the greatest BF ever ;) My advice? Just don't read comments/opinions/reviews try 10 hour trial from EA Access (free with Gamepass, and on Playstation/PC without gamepass it is very cheap for a month) try it for yourself and decide if you want to play it or not.

I take them with a grain of salt like anything else but in general the user reviews tell the real problems with the game, they don’t sugar coat it. Even the youtubers I trust are saying not to buy this game.

I guess that’s why they call them DICE - because it’s a roll of the dice with every new release, haha! But seriously, I was potentially looking forward to this one, so it’s too bad that it seems like it has issues at launch. I think I’d rather spend my time playing something else. Maybe I’ll finally get a Switch and get Shining Pearl as well as Sword.

Disclaimer: I bought the gold edition and have well over 50 hours on this game already.

The core issue with 2042 is the terrible map design. I noticed it right away when playing Orbital in the beta. Yes the maps are slightly too big, but the much bigger issue is the generic design that makes many maps feel the same, poor cover for helicopers, nearly impossible to defend flags and more.

There is no infantry only map like Operation Locker. This game badly needs one.

Kaleidoscope and Hourglass are essentially the same map with a different skin. Both only have a fraction of the skyscrapers in the playable area compared to BF4 maps like Shanghai or Dawnbreaker.

Manifest is one of the most uninspired, boring maps ever.

It's impossible to defend flags at Orbital because none of the flags have any cover or choke points whatsoever.

Breakaway is probably the only decent, original, fun map in the game right now.

Another big issue with BF2042 is the woke game design. There is no scoreboard so feelings cant be hurt. It claims to take place in a dark, near dystopian future, but one of the characters is named 'Sundance' who uses a special weapon called the 'Sundance Special'. Assists get as many points as kills.

Making players have to go into matchmaking after ever round was a huge mistake. Why not just let us stay in one server and go through the map rotation? Instead of wasting our time and making us rejoin servers after every single match. Whats worse, its not uncommon this makes you play the same map multiple times in a row, or puts you into matches that are almost finished multiple times in a row.

The different playable characters was a pretty lame attempt to mimic 'heroes' used in other games. This game would have been much better off if things like the wingsuit, riot shield, and grappling hook were simply items you can use instead of being locked onto a specific character. It's funny that there is only 10 of these characters in the game, yet we are given a tiny amount of different ways to customize them. So your 4 player squad can end up with 3 people looking identical. So stupid. We should have been given generic soldiers with no faces (hidden by gas masks or facepaint) that had extensive customizable cosmetic appearances to give each player on a squad a different, unique look.

The destruction of buildings and the environment here is no better then Battlefield 4, which is a HUGE disappointment. Actually, I think its worse as I dont think you can level certain buildings when they take enough damage.

TL;DR - The problem is, 2042 doesnt do anything really bad, but it does nothing great. It's completely mediocre, and it comes nowhere close to living up to the hype. I definitely regret spending $100 on it. In it's current state it's a $40 game imo. Not $70 or $100.

A lot of great points. One of my biggest gripes is exiting the server and rejoining, which can take a few minutes, followed by an error or unplayable server.

Damn. Game has some problems, but Portal is totally Genius! I found a lot of great servers with nice set of rules. I even found a server with BF3 classes/weapons and vehicles, but with added super sprint and plus menu from 2042! And it was a blast to play it that way.

Is it as good as BF3/BF4/BF1 to me... no, but there are still great only on battlefield moments there.

Had a good time so far but not a great time, looking forward to further updates to portal too as that mode could be the absolute winner if they keep adding maps.

Dissapointed with the launch but I think there is a good base game there for this to turn into a great game.

My biggest gripe are the specialists, no one asked for this. It’s just not a good fit for Battlefield, but I suspect the main reason why they’re in the game is so they can sell skins for them.

Portal is looking very cool though.

While I agree with you that specialists don't fit the game at all, I don't notice them as much as I thought I would. I use the 4 classes as presets and I just use the wingsuit lady, as I absolutely love that. The wingsuit is just so awesome imo!

The specialists are great but I wish their perks could but upgraded as well. A lifetime of use with the sentry turret would be nice to upgrade range, caliber capacity, or spotting ability. Maybe even air defense. Or others just to make them have long term use.

My only or bigest gripes so far is the game just feels kinda shallow atm (lacking content)
The guns in the main game just feel kinda meh, there's no or very few guns that inspire me to grind to unlock or level up.
And like was mentioned with the maps before i agree with, there not alot of fun to play on.
