Well not the return to racing I would have liked, nothing much has changed!
Just done the first Manufacturers slot along with @ASH32 , and after regularly clocking mid 3:17s in clean air in practice lobbies, I'm on a decent lap going through the long right hander near the end, eyes drift to the times coming in (schoolboy error) and I drive off the track to the left! 3:18.1, only good enough for 16th. So as per, I throw all the theory out the window and start on hards.
They weren't as bad as I expected, a few twitches here and there but not the usual blocks of ice that I've become accustomed to, it wasn't too difficult to keep in touch with the group ahead and it wasn't too difficult to keep a GT-R behind. So I thought I'd stay out and no stop, see what happens rather than follow the recently discovered Mr Senna, who in the Toyota 86 put on mediums at the end of the first lap.
I'd been running 16th mainly but regular penalties for the group ahead always kept me in touch or up to 15th for a little while. The fighting really played into the Toyota's hands though as he caught our group, I let him go hoping he'd cause havoc! And although he muscled to the front of the group he never got away. The GT-R that had been behind me finally got past on L6 as I entered the left-right kink with the car unbalanced - I didn't fight too hard, I knew his heart was going to sink at the end of L7 when I didn't pit! One guy pitted at the end of L6 promoting me a place, then a lap later comes the real unfolding of events with everyone else pitting.
I start L8 in 11th, comfortably ahead of 12th and with three cars, including the Toyota in striking distance. The Toyota picks up a 1s penalty, which he's going to serve over the bridge and I thought to myself, "it's been pretty clean with him for once, you watch that penalty drop him right by me..." and it did. I overtook on the bridge but with a Porsche dead ahead of me had to be careful in the braking zone so I fully expected the lunge up the inside that I got. Maybe I should have moved to the inside but at 140mph+ with 200m to the corner and three cars in close proximity on the last lap it would have been a dangerous move!
A twitch through the final left hander ended any chance of improvement and I came home 11th for 156 points.
A couple of things though, the no stopper is ok if you're near the back, the race pace in the pack was about 2s slower than I could do on mediums in clean air, but I would have done better pitting at the end of L1 and would have undoubtedly finished well inside the top 10 (in my opinion). Starting on mediums from that position (16th) would have wasted them, you would spend all the time fighting to get past people while still running nearly 2s a lap slower than is possible. And... SORT OUT MY BLOODY QUALIFYING! Should have started around 10th with a clean lap
I want another go, but I probably won't get one!
Edit: I've just seen they go as late as 2320... I might get another shot - but I'll have had a few!!
