I ended up have work stuff to do during the first couple of slots, so I wasn't able to race until slot 4 last night.
It ended up alternating between extremely frustrating and extremely boring. Frustrating because during qualy I couldn't set a time to save my life. First, I got a track penalty coming out of Ascari on my out lap. Twice I got knocked off-track in the first chicane during my flying lap. I think I got a track penalty at Roggia or Lesmo at some point, as well. Either way, I ended up sitting in the lobby fuming as the final seconds ticked off and I was slotted P18.
That may have been a blessing. I was again in a wide-ranging DR lobby as my SR was still at 89 after the carnage and disconnect at Yamagiwa. If I set a qualifying time in this lobby, I was probably going to be in the neighborhood of P6-P9. And to no one's surprise, there was carnage in the mid-field at T1. I pick my way through the chaos and come out of the chicane P12. As I come up to Roggia, there's more carnage. I move up to P10. Then penalties are served and I speed past more people on my way to Ascari. I finish L1 in P8. Maybe starting in back is the way to go for this combo.
One thing I definitely learned from my practice race earlier is that there is absolutely no way I can no-stop in the Audi TT. Fuel's not an issue but if I don't look after the tires, I'm feeling the wear as early as L8. Speaking of L8, I've made up another position to P7 by now but that's when I start to lose time and a pair of cars caught up with me. I can tell they are having a much better time of it with their tires and let one go by me at Parabolica on L9 and then the other on L10. I pit for tires on L10 and end up in clean air for next several laps. This is a really boring track racing alone. I mean, I'm sure it's fun driving it for real and doing 160 mph in a straight line but for sim-racing? Meh.
A few laps later, I pass P8 when he pits in for new tires. He comes out right on my tail and we battle back and forth for a few laps. Turns out, I'm faster through Parabolica and sector 1, he's faster coming out of Roggia and Lesmo. We trade back and forth for a few laps, then he disconnects. I spend the rest of the race yawning as I lap through clean air.
P8, 53 pts and a repaired SR. Not bad considering how things started out. I guess I get plenty of time to figure out Tsukuba, as I have another work conflict with this week's Nations race.
