Nation's on RBR in Gr 2. What can go wrong?

I qualified on hards in an all B/S lobby, started as p12. Doing my impersonation of Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge I went reasonable on lap 1 with everyone running off everywhere.
Went in pit at end of L1 as the only one. Swapped for mediums and picked it up a notch, now p14.
Past a few while they where in pit, pressured two more so they made mistakes and went off respective spun. Pitted again on L9 and pushed on to almost alone til a finish as p6

Nations Round 3
I'm not normally a big fan of Group 2, but this one ended up going pretty well. Took 2 attempts though, after a complete disaster of a lap 1 in the first slot. :ouch:

Attempt 1
A respectable quali, setting a 1:22:410 for P4. I knew I was capable of faster from free practice, but I just couldn't quite hook it up.

Unfortunately, when the race started it all kind of fell apart at turn 2. I got hit from behind sending me off onto the tarmac at the top of the hill, and as I went to rejoin the track the back end decided it was time to go for a 360 tour. I'd learned whilst practicing that the kerbs can be absolute murder in the Group 2 cars and to avoid them like the plague, but no luck when it's forced upon you by someone else. :(

Even worse (and if you're reading this I'm really, REALLY sorry :nervous:), the spin caused me to hit a South African and launch him into the wall. I got a 3 second penalty (rightly deserved) and fell down to P13 when serving it in the sector 3 penalty line.

From there I managed to claw my way back up to P6 at the end. I felt like I could have been competing for a win there though with the pace I had, so I went again.

Attempt 2
Now we're talking. My best lap in free practice is a 1:21:961, and that felt like a god lap when I did it. I don't know how, but I somehow managed to pull a 1:21:969 out in quali which was barely enough for pole position. However, the Brit who started in P2 was clearly far more consistent than I am. I had a bad turn 1 and turn 2 from nerves when the race started and when he got past he just drove into the distance.

Still, absolutely no complaints as I stayed P2 the whole way to the end. There was no way I was ever going to challenge that guy, so I'm very satisfied that I had the best possible race I could have had. P2, 140 points and a promotion back up to A/S. :D

Same lobbies as me and I didn't even realize!!

I was off the pace at RBR today but the final lap had an incident that looked mighty familiar. I don't know why these two have it in for each other, but as I keep benefiting from it I really don't mind  It's worth a quick watch just to play spot the difference.

As I'm having a week or two off from the daily races thought I'd have a shot at manufacturers. Kind of forgot my DR was artificially high from the Ring. Qualified 20th & finished 20th, I was using the NSX so that's my excuse
Switched to my alternate & the GT-R which is more realistic of my skill at RBR, high C ish.
Turn 2 has always been my main downfall around RBR, so concentrating on that in these races & think I've finally figured it out regarding brake point & turn in which improved my overall lap consistency. Finished in the top 5 in the 3 races I entered, could have challenged for further places but it would have meant taking risky moves with 50 % chance of success so held back.
Racing was clean, saw a few stupid battles which I capitalised on. Why, if you're P2&P3, try & bump each other off on lap 3 ? People, ha.

Well to start, I chose a different car by mistake from what I planned to use with no time to switch back :dunce: so Lexus it was. I've history of bad qualifying at RBR and this time no different, 16th with 1:22.6 and because of that, I started on hards. I pit lap 1, switched to mediums and ran 8 laps before pitting for my second set. I caught up and passed those running hards along with 2 cars that spin off. Above all else, people I raced were fair. No blocking, no dive-bombing at my inner of turn 2/Remus (RBR 'trait') and willing to give up a position if running on a slower compound so it didn't slow us both down.

I finished 10th for 120p and fastest of the 3 other Lexus so not bad overall. At the end of the day if I found a race clean and fair, I'm not too bothered over where I finish.

Why qualify on the Hards?!? It's free speed to use the M's, you can still start on the H's at the race (just change them in the lobby screen between, if you want to start on the H's from a strategy POV... try not to forget! It's happened to me before...)

I mean, I get it, if your plan was to just pit in after L1 anyway, but just making sure there isn't any confusion out there! I see people qualifying on the harder tire in some FIA races and think that they don't understand you can change 'em. I didn't think so when I first started racing online... thought it was 'have to start on what you qualify on' like in some racing series IRL, or at least some that have been.

And even if that was the plan, you can still protect your position for that first lap without too much damage (I've done it at RBR... cold M's are not much better than cold H's for one lap) and then have some potential added track position to work with for those two stints on the optional tires.

Well to start, I chose a different car by mistake from what I planned to use with no time to switch back :dunce: so Lexus it was. Reading these posts... and after watching @Tidgney live stream earlier today, questioning my 1-stop strategy planned for later tonight. Seems 2-stoppers are as viable from the back of the pack as up front, if the only realistic goal is a solid top-10.

Why qualify on the Hards?!?
So I am no slower on my first lap than what my qualifying is. I qualified on medium on Dragon Trail and had a rough first lap as everyone started on mediums and I was on hards.
I knew that the first lap was going to be chaos and after lap one I was higher up the order than I could have qualified on medium. So just a way to gauge my opponents.

FIA Nations Cup -Red Bull Ring - North America slot 1

18 A/S, 2 B/S

Door #1(!), Q11, P5, 130 pts., CRB, +~700DR

Been looking forward to this one all day, and I'm happy with P5 :D

Pretty tight lobby which saw the field covered by 2 seconds, I was 1 second off pole, in 11th, and opted for the 8M, 1H, 8M strategy in the Nissan. There were only 3 non-GTR cars in the field.

My race went better than I had hoped as I made up a few positions from people serving penalties, and as the different tire strategies played out, I made a few passes on pace.

No mistakes (finally), clean and green, one and done! :)

I was in the same race as @afc5150 . I really sort of hate RBR and not usually the biggest fan of Gr 2 but I was clicking a little today.

I ran a couple of really solid laps to qualify 3rd. I was a few hundredths off of second and the pole sitter was way up front. I was planning one stop and started on mediums and was hoping just to keep it together on the first couple of laps.

This was my race:

chaos at the hair pin on the first lap. Thank my stars I made it out mostly unscathed:

and then lap 2...not going to lie, this was not my intention, but it worked...

And it was a wrap from there. I built a 6 second gap up at the pits L8 when I took on RH. P2 took mediums and got as close as 3 seconds back, but I was pretty much in cruise control for the last 9 laps.

Felt good to get the win after the P1 last lap disconnect last week, but I’m still bummed I missed out on those points.
+1500 DR. Time to slowly make the climb back to my peak, I think.

Edit: hat tip to @Adam Barber for the sick livery. I would have put his Mazda livery into victory lane last week too. Maybe I need to run one of his liveries every week, lol

One and done for me and a pretty solitary race. Wish I captured the qualy replay, clearly moved far right on my last outlap before T4 and got SMACKED square in the ass. I was way off the racing line and could have actually carried on, on my outlap pace without interrupting his lap. Wanted to give him a clear path though so got off the line and slowed right down. I was watching on the rear camera, he could see me all the way down and still ploughed into me giving me a 1s pen and ruining my last Q lap. In the chat I got an apology then a ' I was on a flyer gtf of the line' that pissed me off but my chance to respond had to wait until race end.

#16 on the door, Q9, P5 finish. Was in with @Razgriz2118 who had a couple of incidents I think, he's been quicker than me through practice but I was lucky enough to stay outta trouble and avoid any penalties, a first for me at Redbull.

Our friend finished way back, suggested in the chat afterwards he adjust his line.

Got an unexpected day off from work, which meant I had the time to do today’s Nations race.

First two slots were a mess, especially the second one. Had another GT-R dive bomb on T1 at the beginning of the race and it was either move out of the way or get hit, costing me two positions. I also rammed the back of a Lexus that braked unexpectedly early at T2, giving me a 2 second penalty and aero damage. And to top it off, my car randomly spun out on the curb on T1 in the closing laps of the race, resulting me in finishing 14th when I qualified 6th. Ugh. Being in the same lobby with @KosmoKazi was a silver lining at least.

Going to try again in the third slot.

Been quite busy so I only had a few laps practice, wasn't expecting much. I decided to race because I usually do well at RBR.

In Slot 1, 233 point lobby with @GTWolverine and @Geauxgreddy, I had the black screen glitch in qualifying. Believe me I tried going to every menu but it did not fix itself, so I couldn't set a lap and had to start from last place. :nervous: Race was fun but from the back and with a few issues and mistakes, only finished 14th.

Slot 2, decided to go again, luckily no black screen this time. In qualifying, I lost over 2 tenths on sector 1 in my best lap, which made the difference between qualifying 5th and 14th, 4 tenths off pole. The full grid was within 9 tenths, incredible. With @Razgriz2118, @GTWolverine and @sk1719, we actually qualified all next to each other. :gtpflag:

Unfortunately, I made a silly mistake into turn 1, as I went a bit wide on the cold hard tyres and I almost lose the car as I tried to avoid getting a penalty. I saved the back of the car and didn't get a penalty, but had a terrible exit and went to almost last. From there, it was a fun clean race, with a few battles and overtakes.

Had clean air for the final laps and finished in P9. Although with hindsight, I think a 2-stopper might have worked better, not too bad from 14th on the grid, specially after dropping to the back after T1.

Finally, a good result in Nations! After finishing 15th in each of the first two rounds, I got a 4th place finish tonight. There is something about Red Bull and me. 14 races there and 9 top 5 finishes in all different types of cars. No other track even comes remotely close to having that kind of success for me. I'm also now back up to Dr B :).

Wow, what a round this was...

Time Slot 1
Door #5 and was joined by @CJam and some other regulars in this lobby. This room was definitely around my level at 202 points (I felt strong in the Gr. 2 here, normally I would think this kind of room would be too high). I had provisional pole and ended up qualifying 4th, only 0.04s off of 1st, and the entire field was around 1 second of each other.

And then... I Sebastian Vettel-ed my race. T1, I thought I was braking on-time, and it turns out I braked too late. Luckily I didn't get a penalty, but 5th was side-by-side with me. I thought I braked on-time, but upon viewing the replay, I did brake slightly too late into T3, causing me to go into the run-off area. With everyone behind, I ended up re-joining 10th. I was faster than the people ahead, but there was a group of 4 and I was struggling to figure out how to pass.

Things then got worse because coming out of Rauch around Lap 4, I sbinalla-ed. I have absolutely no idea why - viewing the replay, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. So I fell down into 18th. I managed to claw my way back into 12th but was kicking myself because a podium definitely was possible.

Time Slot 2
Door #15 and was joined by @csmirnoff , @GTWolverine , and a couple of other regulars in this lobby. I was concerned because this room was 220 points, so I was hoping I could get good points this race. I ended up qualifying around 0.1s faster than Time Slot 1, but this was only good enough for 11th in this lobby.

I still managed to screw up the start, but not as bad this time. There was a huge, lively group in front of me and one-by-one they started spinning, getting penalties, etc., and I actually found myself up into 3rd by Lap 10. I was going to pit on Lap 10 from Hards, but I probably should've pitted on Lap 9, as everyone pitted then and @GTWolverine went from around 1.5s behind me to side-by-side when I exited the pit lane, who passed me into T3, putting me into 5th. I then got caught up behind a much slower person, but for the life of me I can't pass in Gr. 2 cars on the RBR due to how the dirty air affects the car. A person behind me managed to sneak through, and on the second-to-last lap, I got past the slow person, only for them to run me off the road into T3 and I almost got overtaken by someone going into T4, but I was able to defend into Rauch. In a rare instance of the penalty system working though, they got a 2s penalty, and I retook 6th as they served it before the start finish line, and I got 172 points for my efforts.

Definitely done with this race. I feel that I have good pace, but I just cannot pass around here, even if my life depended on it.

Yet again, did 2 slots before I got a result I was happy with.

Slot 1
Qualified 8th, and needed 4th for my goal of at least 200 points. Not helping my cause was the entire room being basically broken: @csmirnoff had a black screen in qualifying, 2nd place parked it at the exit of the final corner during the auto-drive rolling start and bunched us all up while allowing the leader to run away, and the driver who eventually finished 2nd said there was no one else on the track (and a few people I raced were driving like I literally wasn't there...).

I'd decided to start on the Hards, as I usually do when I'm not at least in the Top 5 at the start, and I drop positions until I was around P13 when pit stops began. I pitted on Lap 9 to finally put on the much-needed Mediums. In the end I found myself in a train that ran up to 4th place, but could only manage 9th.

Slot 2
Once again had @csmirnoff in this race, and this time @Razgriz2118 joined us as well. This race was worth slightly fewer points, so I had to finish 3rd in order to get over 200 points. My qualifying time was less than 0.5s off of pole...but I still ended up only 13th. The entire field was separated by less than 1s. @Razgriz2118 rolled off 11th, with @csmirnoff 1 spot behind me in 14th. Since my goal was a whole 10 spots away, I started on Hards again. I made it up to 10th by the end of the opening lap, then lost it back to @Razgriz2118 on Lap 2 when I had to serve a 0.5s penalty after running up on the curbs too much in the esses on the opening lap. After that, @Razgriz2118 pretty much stayed in the fight with the pack in front of us that stretched up to 3rd place, while I was hanging out just behind the group. We both picked up several spots due to mistakes in front of us.

We were in 4th and 5th (some of which was due to the drivers on Mediums pitting before we did) when I pitted on Lap 9 and managed to get the undercut when he pitted a lap later. The rest of the race was basically just me trying to not take myself out with a mistake while others did. I did have to hold off a brief challenge from someone behind, but eventually he and @Razgriz2118 began battling and allowed me to escape. Ultimately I climbed 9 positions to 4th due almost exclusively to just not making mistakes, which was good for "only" 192 points, but I didn't trust myself to go 3 consecutive races without a crash, so I decided to take my points and run. @Razgriz2118 also got 6th in a nice improvement from their starting spot. Unfortunately I don't remember where @csmirnoff finished since we didn't really interact much in the race itself.

Edit: Congrats on the Top 10 @csmirnoff!

FIAGTC 2020-2021 Exhibition Season
Nations Cup
Race #3

This season just isn't going to be a good one for me. The races don't fit me. I'm just grinding and to be honest it isn't fun at all.

The Gr2 cars, with their preference for violent inputs make for a terrible car for me. And throw them on RBR, where it accentuates the need for those, and it was a clear losing bet for me.

Not even looking forward to the Manufacturers race at Tsukuba, where it is sure to be a $#% show. What a stupid combination. But I will miss the next week or two with travel so it's a matter of getting some points when I know I can log on.

Ran it on the Alt account (identical DR), with @Trone_Colby and @Master Weasel (who also joined me for the race on my main account), and for good measure, more or less duplicated my results (though here I meant to run MH 1-stop but mistakenly put on M's on the pit stop so had to run MMH. Got the same FIA points for that race as the first one. Gave away 1100 hard earned DR. Wasted 800k CR on the Gr2 Nissan-- though I thought I could use it on the Daily Race C this week too.

Both races were clean (I was one of few with no red dot on the end screen each time!)... I was just slow. Again.

you can be sure I was being passed here, not the other way around...

Great work, congrats on solid race... and cool livery. Sorry I missed you in Slot #2... but I would have been one-and-done with that result too!

Going to try again in the third slot.

Silver lining and easy pickings! But nice to race with you both times... it's been some time, I think. I was hoping to use your draft to put some distance on the car behind me, but I just couldn't keep up. I'm a wreck at RBR and in those cars it just gets exaggerated. I'm hoping for a better second half of the season, because these first few races have been really poor for me.

Edit: Congrats on the Top 10 @csmirnoff!

Yup, I was happy going up 5 places, and like you said, I got all of those just from not messing up in that race. I could've definitely gotten 5th had I been able to get past the slow person, but like I said, I just cannot pass anyone with this track and class combo. I'm used to passing at T3 and T4 (or T2 and T3 depending on what you count as a turn on this track), but I have a hard time following through T1 due to the combination of slipstreaming along the front straight and then getting dirty air for the corner, and usually because i get put onto the back foot after T1 I'm too far away to be able to catch up by T3 for a move into T4.

Also, I'm glad that 0.5s penalty you had wasn't from me, when I bump drafted you I wanted to signal to you that I wanted to work with you to catch the people ahead, but the penalty thing flashed right after I did that. Congrats on the 4th!

Third slot was yet another bust, but in the midnight race, I mustered up a top 10 finish.

full

Qualified 18th and did a 9M/8H strategy. On the opening lap, a couple of people went off, which helped. This clearly wasn't my night and not the best start to the Nations season for me, but hopefully things will improve later on.

Silver lining and easy pickings! But nice to race with you both times... it's been some time, I think. It's all good. Hope we run into each other again. It's always refreshing to see someone from here in the lobby, especially if some of the other players don't race fairly.

For the third time I was disconnected/network error message during lobby building process (2 Nations, 1 Manufacturers). PS4 is hardwired to Sonic Fiber and the "network analysis" within Sport Mode shows a nearly perfect connection - only the ping parameter is not at the edge of the pentagon (42ms which is still green). What a waste of SR and DR.

I diped a toe in to FIA for the first time tonight. I don't know that I belong in an A-A+ room, especially with this combo, but wth. First time out I qualified 17th with a 24.1 . Got knocked off in T1 and ended up abou 6 seconds back. I think I finished where I started. Got 60 points. Next time up I put down a 22.9, which started me 10th. This time it was T2 that put me to the back. Ended up racing for 18th most of the race. I think that's where I finished. I think it was worth 45 points. Still trying to figure out how it all works... I definitely need to be more consistant. Did a 22.9 in the second race on the second full lap of a set of mediums. Did 1 stop, but that may have been a mistake. Looks like most are doing 2 for more time on the mediums. Oh well, maybe the next combo will be something I'm a bit better on.

I absolutely destroyed my race because of my strategy. I started P15 so I decided to go for the H tires already. Got punted in the very first corner and went back to P19...
I DID NOT stop hahahhaa, the last 4 laps were crazy without any rubber. I ended up finishing P12, which I didn't understand because I'm pretty sure I had finished P14.

I should have read more about strategies but went blind,I also used the 08' GT-R while everybody else was in the 16'.

Looking forward to Tsukuba, 27 freaking laps, it's going to be a ********.

Positive point, I was streaming the race and got 22 live viewers!!! It's not a lot, or course, but it was fun.
