Though it would if you where unlucky to still have the 20gb model...

Not for everything though, the game can still be played offline.. The only thing it does is get weather updates etc and for online play...

My game would not even start if were not connected to PSN.

Really? You're using the digital version? I always thought you could play it while not being logged on.

Can someone give me more information on this hard drive stuff? What would we need the extra hard drive space for?

Since the primary reason for having a PS3 was to play GT5, even at a comparitively puny 60GB, I have no doubts I will be able to find a spare 10GB.

Depends on how much you store on your hard drive and how many games you have installed at one time..

I usually install maybe 2 games, and thats it at a time

When a game offers custom install, does the system make you choose when you insert the disc, or is it some setting in the PS3 you need to enable?

I remember that when my brother bought Soul Calibur IV, the game just started without install, although I've read somewhere that it also offered a custom install...

Lucky for me that I purchased a 250gb PS3 not too long ago.

The install is optional, if you go into options you can install the game to the HD, this improved the load times

Oh, ok. Well I pretty only plan on playing GT5 (and MAYBE Guitar Hero on occasion lol:)) so will I be fine the space I've got?

Yeah I think the problem would be avoidable even with a 20gb sized hd if you only install what you are currently playing. Don't forget you can re download everything off PSN anyhow if you need it again.. that includes DLC etc.

Ok, I think a lot of people are confused and may not know the right question to ask. I may be off on this, but I hope it at least helps one person. 👍

Why would installing 10gb on your hdd be beneficial if you already have the game on the disc?

The answer is simple. Optical Media (discs) are slower than Magnetic Media (disks). In other words, if I have information on a hard drive, that information will load quicker than it would if it was all on a optical disc (dvd, blu ray, etc).

So, people are excited, because they have the option to store 10gb of the game on the hard drive. Which will make loading times in the game faster. 👍

Thats well put scope it will help people understand why an install is the most beneficial option... I also add thats ok if it is an optional install..

But It may be a forced install which means you NEED 10gb free space to play the game..

I'm only going on GT prologue but it was a mandatory install to play the game so I imagine GT5 to be a mandatory install.

So Sony removed their size limitation? Hmm.

I think they removed it last year or early this year with Agarest.. (strategy rpg) If I remember right it was roughly a 10gb install.. *don't quote me I'm slightly drunk lol* The only other install which comes close was Resonance of fate I think it was quite a large install.. though I can't remember how big it was.. I think it was 6gb or more...

10GB would be 20% of the available space on a 60GB launch machine...I'd be very surprised if such a large amount were forced.

Nothing would suprise me, it could be either to be honest. I just hope it doesn't go along the lines of metal gear solid 4 and keep asking you to install after so long...

I have 35Gb free on my 80G Fat PS3,So I shall be O.K

👍 Thats it, I have a 1tb drive in my ps3 and a 1tb external drive to hold all my videos and backup my saves etc..

If someone was to use their ps3 to store videos etc. Why not invest in an external drive to store them? Anyone can pick up a resonable sized external HD for around the same price as a game.

True, but then again, selfish old me doesn't care 'cos I've got plenty of space available. The bigger the install allowance, the better as far as I am concerned!

I was going to do that, attach a large drive to my PS3, but then I figured backups would be a pain, and sharing the content would not be possible. So, I bought a 4-bay NAS and run it in RAID5. It shipped with 4 x 500GB drives, but I gradually replaced them with 2 TB drives. Hooked up to the network we now have media players in almost every occupied room.

Like twisteddeeds said, some games give you the choice whether or not to install the game. Though Prologue didn't give you any choice in the matter. ;)

ahh its only 10GB. That dosent surprise me. Just get a 160gb Slim?

I've got 6 gigs left on my old fatty. I should have upgraded my hdd a long time ago, but oh well, better late than never. :dunce:
