Yes I paid only £35 for my Western Digital 320GB HDD. I upgraded mine not just because of GT5 but I also use my PS3 to record TV.

A tip for everyone though who is going to do this. Only tighten the screws using a screwdriver when all 4 screws are in place. I made the mistake of tighten each screw and because of this I struggled to get the last one in!

How do you record TV on a PS3?

Generally when installing something, install all 4 screws loosely then come back and tighten.

Thats well put scope it will help people understand why an install is the most beneficial option... I also add thats ok if it is an optional install..

But It may be a forced install which means you NEED 10gb free space to play the game..

I'm only going on GT prologue but it was a mandatory install to play the game so I imagine GT5 to be a mandatory install.

By the way I said "optional" because thats the way I interpreted Kaz's Tweet.

If there is an at least 256M byte, I move, but can play it comfortably when the 10G byte becomes vacant.

I'm pretty sure the 256 number is what will be required. The 10gb number will be optional.

If you mean you are buying a new one to increase space... That isn't needed. The ps3 was designed for hdd upgrades. Just buy a 2.5 inch (laptop) hdd. Preferably at 7200 rpm.

Gotta say, it's very nice of Sony to actually include a section specifically for hard drive upgrades in my PS3's user manual. Not that I need it with a new 250gb quite yet.

Question: when I'm done with a demo, I just hit triangle and delete it. I do this because, unlike a PC, I can't seem to find an Uninstall option anywhere. Is there one? Or if there isn't, can someone at least let me know that deleting does get rid of every hint of a game? Just to ensure I'm freeing up as much space as possible... because I know 10gb is only the start for GT5...

Simple its a Sony product called PlayTV. This connects to my PS3 via USB and then my digital coaxial cable plugs into the little black box. You then install using the included Blu ray disc and away you go. I can even use my PSP to switch on my PS3 and record a programme and I can even make sure my PS3 automatically switches off when its finished recording the programme.

You're right but for a long time I have wanted to upgrade my old fat PS3 and get a PS3 slim. Now I feel I have enough good reasons to do it even though I could bother and modify the old one.

I'll bet he meant to get a whole new PS3, because for some people, increasing space in an older unit just isn't the same!

Not really, to get rid of everything you'll have to delete the game/demo, the game data and the savegames.

A couple of other points I wish to raise. I was informed that you should use a 5400rpm Sata drive rather than a 7200rpm HDD. The HDD that came included with my PS3 was a Hitachi 5400 rpm Sata drive.

Also Sony provide excellent support for upgrading your HDD. Due to having problems putting the last screw I rang Sony and asked for a spare HDD caddie. This arrive 5 days later free of charge and all the screws were also included.

Really is an excellent product. I purchased mine preowned for £20 and yet if I wanted to buy a freeview box with HDD I would pay around £80. This is why the PS3 is excellent value for money considering also the Blu ray drive.

I must admit im unsure about the US and what options they have to watch TV. Here in the UK we currently have 4 different ways to access TV channels although this will soon change to 3.

1. Analog TV via aerial.
2. Digital TV via Digital Aerial (PlayTV uses this).
3. SKY TV via satellite dish.
4. Cable TV via Virgin Media.

Very soon Analog will be replaced by Digital TV so everyone has to upgrade their aerials.

I've still got 40 gigs left on my 120Gig HDD and that's with 33 demos, a few long gt-tv videos, gamesaves, installs, and my whole music collection. As long as you have at least an 80Gig HDD, the install should not be a problem.

10 giga instalation is not huge for HD game graphique + 7.1 sounds and with all things in GT5.
But dont worry, all screens shoots, all replay, vidéos, all levery, cars, saves, etc etc ...than you do, go in HDD and with the time it will be take huge space.
And erase our best performance in each cars, on each tracks, will be hard.

I upgraded my orig fat 60GB to a WD 500GB for Playtv 6 months ago. Cost me $99AUD landed from hong kong. Works great,easy,simple upgrade. 10GB for GT5 install is nothing for a big HDD. Just give me the game ALREADY! :-)

I love Playtv! Has to be one of the best things ever invented. It really makes your PS3 an all in one system. My wife loves it,she can record all of her girly tv shows and watch them when im not home. 👍

It`s only 2 downsides are that it needs a direct USB connection to your PS3. It`s ok on my fat 60GB but on a slim USB ports are rare. It wont work on a hub unfortunately. I tried it. And it needs a really strong tv signal to work,caused me few headaches sorting it out. A booster,expensive but top notch RG-6 cable`s and F type connectors has it sorted

Really? You should check that one out. We are doing the same thing down here in aus and you don`t need to change your aerial. the digital signal/old Yagi style aerials work fine. Don`t get scammed by someone trying to flog you a "digital aerial". All the big retailers now advertise standard aerials as "digital" to try and catch you out. Remember these days you are a walking $ sign and everyone else wants your $. Do your research then buy 👍

Yes you can do all the normal PS3 stuff whilst recording tv with play tv on. It can run in the background with no probs as it designed to do it. It`s really good. 👍

It has a in built tv guide that goes upto 2 weeks in advance,so you can set it to record your shows when out,late at night etc. it just turns itself on and off,even when playing a game,on net,watching a movie(dvd/blu ray). It just pops up a small grey box in the top corner of your screen and tells you its started recording or finished recording(lie when a friend sings in/out. It`s really excellent and cheaper than having a DVR.
