I ran the first GT1 slot in North America (9 PM EDT). I was in door #3 driving the BMW M6, with 164 points available.
I didn't get any really good laps out of qualifying. I set a time of 1:57.591, which landed me in Q11.
As expected, there was chaos off the start, but not the kind I was expecting. The car two ahead of me stayed put. It didn't move an inch. Or ghost. Thankfully, I was able to swerve to avoid it. The car behind me was not so lucky and drove right into the back of it.
There was a bit of rubbing through T1 and T2, but everything remained pretty civilized, and I was a bit surprised to find I'd come out of the first complex of corners in P8. From there, it was mostly processional, just trying to stay in the train. At some point I was promoted to P7 when the P2 driver was taken out.
The most excitement came in lap 7, when the #11 BMW in P6 made a small mistake at the sweeping right-hander (T5?). That gave me the chance to get alongside for the esses at the top of the hill.
That was a fun bit of side-by-side action that netted me P6, at least momentarily. The move had compromised my run out of the esses and we were abreast once more going into Big Banky Boi. They had the inside, so I pulled the old switcheroo and we came out still side-by-side in the run down the hill.
The #13 Lexus behind got a better exit than the both of us and tried to squeeze between us at the ess.
At the first corner, I didn't realize they'd managed to poke their nose in. I turned into them and unsettled the back of my car. I managed to avoid a spin, but the slide had compromised my speed and the two of them drove past, leaving me in P8.
There was a bit more action, but none worth mentioning. I ran a 9/10/10 strategy. I managed to reclaim P7 at some point and held it to the end for 123 point and a small boost to my DR. That felt like a lot of racing for not much action. Still, it was a decent result, so I'll take it.
Final results for the season...
Aside from the gold I got for my primary local are for being the sole driver, the other results only netted me bronze awards. I suppose that goes to show how little participation there was in North America this season.
I have to say that I enjoyed this season more than I expected to. The first round was horrible for me, but the rest were at least somewhat fun. Some of the rounds were more interesting strategically than they first seemed on paper, such as the fuel-saving at Spa and tire-saving at Autopolis. Even the F3500-A was fun, once I got the hang of driving it.
The biggest problem with the season for me, though, were the time slots. With the first slot at 9PM for me, it was just too late. At that time of day my brain is winding down and I'm just not at my best.
I'm not sure when we'll be back for another exhibition season, but, until then, thanks for the great chat and community! It's been a blast, as always!
