No assists, a joke?

BTW, unless you can prove otherwise it is impossible to turn off the AWD ATTESA-ETS assistance systems while using a stock unaltered GT-R.
You mean this?

Advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) [*] with three driver-selectable modes:

Normal – for daily driving; controls brakes and engine output

R-Mode – for ultimate performance; raises the threshold at which the system intervenes

Off – disengages the VDC system

What i want to know is, whats up with the steering assists, my firends, and even alot of people online(including high ranking time trial drivers), have strong steering assists....i for one, have none, what is up with that, i don't see, how it helps( believe me i tried it), no difference to my times.

I know I will be hung from a tree for this, but I feel it needs to be brought up.

Am I the only one who has a good laugh at all the folks around here who constantly want to remind you how they never use any assists? I'm being serious, do they even know what realism is?

I for one use assists based on which car I am driving.
Am I driving a full blown race car or am I driving a stock production vehicle.

Surely if I go down to my local Lamborghini dealership and ask to drive the Murcielago and how to turn off the assists I will be laughed at. Therefore, you better believe I turn on TCS, ASM, and ABS when driving it in GT5.
Why you may ask? Because the real 🤬 car has a full blown state-of-the-art Electronic Stability Control system.

Furthermore, do those same people understand that some race cars do indeed have a form of traction control and/or other assists?
Traction control was only banned in Formula 1 at the start of the 2008 season. That says something right there. Therefore, guess what? When I drive the F2007, yes I turn on TCS.

1) Do you know that the Lambo, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, 458 Italia and most of the over 400 HP road cars have a way to disable all the assist? If you are a good driver and you are in a track with one of these beasts, would be better to turn them off if you want to go fast.

2) You can play the game anyway you want, you can use Driving Line, TSC at 10, SRF, Auto shifting, autopilot and whatever you want, I just don't care. Play as you are more confortable, is your right, personally I'ill never laugh at people using assists.

3) I drive with no assist because I go way faster this way. Assist slows me, I can handle basically all the cars in the game without assists except ABS=1, so I do that. I have nothing against people using assists, everyone choose the way to play his game, I don't really care about it.

4) Talking about each assists : TCS in the game function as a power limiter when you start to skid the tires. If you are able to handle the skid, it will only slow you, it's proven. ASM is totally crap to me, is useless in the game, it slows you even if you are a totally bad driver IMHO. ABS is the only aid that helps you to go faster, because is extremely difficult to learn how to not block the tires with no brake feedback, but is possible; I prefer to keep it at 1 just to not stress myself blocking the tires continuosly. SRF... I never use it, and I consider it as a cheat, but if you want to use it, use it.

So, basically I don't care if you use assists or not, I'll never judge you by this fact.

Well, to be honest, I do agree that driving modern cars with no driving aids at all aren't realistic. But in Gran Turismo, we can only drive in a track designed for racing with a bunch of AIs competing against us, not in a city full of traffics where we have to drive safely all the time.

So, why bother about the driving aids in times when we really need to gain speed to remain competitive in a race? ;)

Well, to be honest, I do agree that driving modern cars with no driving aids at all aren't realistic.

You can turn everything off but ABS usually, and ABS can be defeated with minor modifications.

Then you have proper track cars like Vipers which need no assists.

I just want to point out that real assists and auto transmissions are better than drivers. The off switch is there to reduce boredom, not laptimes. It's the opposite in GT though.

GTplanet is infatuated with elitism, ego, and butthurt whiners.

I usually use ABS=1

For the first few days of playing I used TCS, but it robs you of so much speed.

Yes,me too..👍
Just to let the op know though,no assists is definitely not a joke.Especially in something like a TVR,Viper. There are cars like the aforemoentioned and race car's where I'd simply don't want any electronic interference, even ABS.

One of the best things about GT5 is how PD has managed to give the cars life and feeling.

There is a point in the game where you can gain control when the car is at the absolute limit, and the smallest error will send you spinning off into the wall.

The driving assists in the game kick in way before the limits of your car. This is very realistic, they are there to help you maintain control of your car and that is exactly what they do.

There is something about the feeling of controlling a car that has been pushed to the point where it is marginally stable that is almost indescribable.

Its like holding a guitar when your amp is cranked up to 11, it breathes and heaves and if you touch it wrong, it will run away from you.

Once you figure out how to push a car past the point where the aids would kick in if you turn the aids back on, you can feel these systems sucking the power and life out of the car, taking the control away from you - leaving the car feeling dead and unresponsive.

When someone urges you to race with the driving aids off, they are trying share their experiences with you. Sometimes this comes off as elitist hate mongering, but they are really trying to say:

"Dude, you have got to try this! These cars are alive! It is totally freaking awesome! You are going to love it!"

If you ever do get a chance to feel this life these cars have, you will be in absolute awe that a video game can give you that kind of experience.

Great post, gotta love this guys attitude.

Way to stay positive bro.

I'll say it

Dude you got to try these cars aid free, they really do come to life and the experience is elevated and achievements feel incredible. Laying down a smoking hot lap at the Nurb no assist, on sports tires is where this game is at it's best for me. I hope others can get that feeling no matter how they play the game.

To be fair, the assists and control systems these days are so advanced that they can certaintly make you faster.

There was a video of a guy doing a lap in a Ferrari 458 with the aids on, and then with them off. And the car was considerably better behaved and smoother with them on.

Maybe it was smoother, have you considered that it might just be down to driving style. With no assists you need to be gentler with your input while accelerating, braking and turning and if this guy you speak of drove in exactly the same way he did with assists on then its inevitable the car would appear less stable when aids were off. You cant really judge such things from watching a video in my opinion. Personally I only use abs on 1 and it does not make me a superior driver but it gives me the challenge I crave.

Driving with no assists whatsoever really brings the car alive. The driving experience is so raw, and you are in complete control. It's so much more entertaining to turn the driving aids off, no matter what sort of a mundane car you're in, and no matter which assists it uses in real life.

As to lap times and egoes, well I don't really care whether people use assists or not, and I certainly don't see it as an achievement, but I don't have a lot of time for over-egotistical people anyway. Certainly I find that turning off assists actually makes me slower because of all the extra care you have to take when driving, but I also believe that putting you in direct control of the vehicle teaches you to be a better driver. Either way, driving without aids really does make a good lap feel like more of an achievement, and gives you so much more enjoyment while getting there.

haha 👍 true!

And you still think tire grip is the same in A-spec and online.:dunce:

tires_400x350.jpg

Every NASCAR driver that uses NASCAR tires are cheaters?
Good logic you have there.

Umm I think there's some misinformation going on this thread. You guys are saying that you can turn all assist off but actually you dont really turn them off. On Ferrari for example it's a race mode and not a all assist off. It does several stuff to the car and turn TCS ACM off etc.. but it dont turn all assist off.

I usually drive with all assists off except ABS 1 (I tried turning that off to, but I was all over the place :P)

I most enjoy driving tuned sports and supercars, in the 400-700 bhp regions, on sports soft tires. It can be quite challenging keeping them on the track, and you feel the difference in cars very well.

That said, I think everyone should do what they enjoy, really.

I do agree that matching aids to the actual car makes sense.

I use the assists only when I am a bit bored and racing in a track that I have never used before (just to indicate the turns). In tracks I am familiar with I don't.

You can do that but GT-R losses it's warranty then. This also means that it is not possible to achieve those amazing lap times on ring without losing warranty.(same goes for using launch control)

edit: I only use ABS from assists. Without assists is more fun. For me it is pointless to drive a sports car with assists on. Of course in real life assists should be used if you are making a journey from A to B to improve safety but enjoying car with assists like TC and ESP is impossible to me.

I think the point was that it allows him to drive more agressively and the systems are so well tuned that they remove a lot of the skill needed and allow him to max the car with minimal effort, thus allowing him to focus on perfecting the lines and making him faster. Could be argued that a really good driver could get more with the systems off, its hard to tell without testing. Either way modern systems are amazing.

But if it was me, I would turn them off, just for the enjoyment if anything.

I drive with assists off except for ABS at 1. I dont do it to feel elitist or lord it over anyone I just find it more enjoyable that way. There are some that scoff at people using assists and there is a certain amount of elitism here IMO. But its all down to how you want to play the game at the end of the day and what you need to do to get enjoyment out of it

Constantly hearing people on here saying I use ABS 1 nothing else thats great, Its the way they enjoy the game nothing wrong with that, you use what ever assists suit you, Its your game enjoy it the way you want.
Personally I am from a different era I use D-pad and the X, square and circle buttons, and what ever assists suit my needs but I can usaully get away with not using most of them so thats not an issue, I have 60 gold on licence,s.
And 2, 24hr endurance,s from 100% on A and B spec and just a few away from the specials being completed, I get laughed at for using the D-pad but thats the way I like it, Its just me.
anyway the point being is just enjoy it.What ever you use on what ever car it is.
Plus like to point out I don,t drive in the real world so can,t compare to that its just a game to me.

This is exactly my point that I've been asking about for years! What settings do we need to use to accurately depict ultra sophisticated factory driver aids? PD should have implemented these options when available in the real car.

we all here agree on everey one should play the game the way they want so it really sucks when i go to a online lobby and find all the aids not allowed i only care abought TCS for powerfull FR's and MR's and i am using DS3 so i don't have proper acelarator control so i can't play with my favorite cars online :ouch:

i get laughed at for using the D-pad but thats the way i like it, its just me.

I think thats hilarious but only because I have a few friends that are still stuck in the days of the original Playstation but are pretty good racers as well and for the life of me I just cant figure out how they do it when I tried reverting back to the d-pad I was aweful. I'm pretty sure I was better when I was 8 using the d-pad than I am now. I'll just stick to beating them with the analogue stick

LOL Makes me laugh too but I guess I just enjoy it that way,
Why fix something thats not broke.LOL:)

Well, I wouldn't hang the OP (or anyone else) from a tree for using assists, it's just that many of us more experienced gamers know that driving aids actually hamper our driving. We can usually get better lap times with all this junk turned off because we know how to maneuver the car properly to get the most speed from it. The purpose of driving aids in general are to slow you down. If you're being slowed down, you're not getting the full potential of the car.

ABS is the main exception to this. ABS is installed on most modern cars (and was a silent feature in previous Gran Turismos) and usually it does a better job at stopping a car in GT5 more safely without sliding or lockup, etc.

Only exception for me personally is if there's insane amounts of horsepower being used. In some circumstances, I'll turn TCS on, usually if the slightest blip of the fuel pedal creates wheelspin.

But again, to the fellow who originally started this thread, it's too bad people crucify others here for using driving aids. It's a personal preference imo.

I see what you mean. Point taken.

"Its much more challenging and fun"

Exactly. I play with all assists off (including ABS), manual transmission, and sports tires even on race cars. I also find it gives the driver more control.

Assists of any type make the game too easy (in my humble opinion)

I think I'll bring up Top Gear, as many seem to like that show.

You generally see Clarkson hooning around, talking about the TCS and ASC, and how they help him stay in control (even though he'll occasionally criticize them for being overly intrusive), then he'll turn off everything he can and just go spinning around almost every corner...

But when the Stig gets in the car for the fastest lap, he turns off EVERYTHING that can be turned off. If you are a 'tame racing driver', those aids just get in the way. But if you are a normal human being, they often make you faster.

I don't think the game is any different. The very best drivers get hindered by assists, and the worse need them at all times. Most of the rest of us are somewhere in between.

But MY goal is to get a feel for what a REAL race driver has to cope with, in a nice cheap consequence-less environment. So, I don't enable anything at all except for ABS-1. No, I'm CERTAINLY not faster this way. But at least I'm getting an idea what those amazing pro drivers have to cope with. My hat's off to them all...

People should also note that AIDS work usually much better in real life than what is programmed in game. There are some AIDS like EVO's active yaw control and active center differential that make cars faster in real life but usually games do not model individual systems so accurately and they often get in the way of high performance driving in games.

GT5 is great that you can choose how far you want to go and not dictate experience like e.g forza does. PD is commited to also improve AIDS in game like they patched EVO's SAYC some time ago(maybe Mitsubishi gave them a complaint about modelling this system in game?)

Depends on what i want in that particulary moment, sometimes, put all off for just fun, others tc 5 and abs 1 for "test" cars.

Also i love deftones!! i saw them three times and goes to the fourth, chino rules and the drumer is a damn showman:tup:
