ps3 backwards compatibility question

Just wondering if i get a ps3, would I be able to run Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 on it and play with a G25 without problems like i did on ps2(before it broke)?

In the most simple terms, it depends which PS3 you buy. I think any new system will not play PS2 games, but someone else can confirm. The only model I know which does play PS2 games is the 60GB which is no longer sold, though there may be others.

Yep, the only PS3 that will play PS2 games are the launch ones. You'll have to find them used.. saying they all haven't gotten YLOD.

You won't be able to buy a BC PS3 new

Actually, it is possible, if someone who has one was willing to sell it. For example, I have an original U.S. version, 60GB PS3 with backward compatibility, and I have never taken it out of the box that it came in when I bought it back in January of 2007. Please note that this particular PS3 is not for sale at the present time, but it most likely will be at some point in the distant future.

Well I was going to mention, if he could find one bnib still from someone, but he won't be able to pick one up in stores (unless stores still have them for whatever reason?!)

Yeah i own a launch 60GB PS3, and in my opinion it was the best model they ever did. Only this one has backwards compatibilty. But when you think about it, this is because the hardware was built into it to enable it to run PS2/PS1 games, and only with regular updates ws it able to run almost all of these games(which it didnt originally). So why can't Sony simply give newer PS3 owners an emulator download which will contain all the necessary software needed to run PS1/PS2 games? Iv seen emulators on the PC that enables you to insert your old Mega-CD games and have them running, so why not?

But for me, Ive lost interest in last-gen games. I gave up playing PS1 games when I got my PS2, and likewise with the PS3. I'll tell you how much Ive moved on: I used to play GT4 non-stop, but since GT5p Ive never touched it. GT5p may only be half a game, but it is light years ahead of GT4 in many ways.

Not to mention there are people who are working PS2 emulation on the computer. PS1 emulation is pretty much perfected. When I run GT3 in PS2 emulation on my laptop the program crashes before the races starts. So having the PS2 emulation on the PS3 is less of an option for me but I still need it to play my older PS2 games. I currently own a 60GB(now has a 320GB) PS3 and I love every bit of it. I never made use of the "Other OS" feature since the PS3 already had a web browser.
