The impact penalty: good or bad?

The 10sec penalty is cr*p, my dad the other day hit a car on pro mode in GT4:P and and got his penalty (fine) but then he just goes down the slip road on Fuji speedway and passes all the cars and dunt get one. now are PD guna put one in to stop people cheating like that?. But in reflection it makes me a better drive because i was always tempted to just ram cars out of my way in GT3 but now if im going to get a 10sec penalty for it then I dont and i guess this makes me a better driver. :)

The 10 second peralty in the Toyota demo is just fine. The only time I got a penalty was when I was fooling around, and hit the wall hard.

My concern is regarding hitting or bumping other cars on the course. How hard of a bump does it take to get a penalty?

a) It shouldn't

Shouldn't, but does, just like in real life. You think Barrichello appreciated Sato slicing into his barge board at Nurburgring, or Raikkonen driving into the back of Antonio Pizzonia at Spain 2003?

Maybe I'm being elitest, but I don't get all the people complaining about losing a race at the last turn because of this... I can't actually remember the time I had to contest the last corner of a race. I haven't seen the AI make kamikaze runs, they're just clunky about sticking to the racing line, so if you leave them racing room and be wary just as you would be on a normal road, there shouldn't be a problem.

The one good side of this impact penalty is it will force people to 2nd guess on when to attack. In Live for Speed theres no penalty for t-boning the car in front of you or causing it to spin out. There's also a air of animosity during the races and especially when attemping to pass someone. There's so much bad blood between different teams and individuals. It does inspire you to drive harder though to get back on the person who rammed you... Live for speed races give a new meaning to the word "Battle" lol. Unless your in a club or one of the Pro LFS race Leagues you will find it hard to race w/ out some major pileup occuring sooner or later.
I'm looking foward to the many friendly and fair races i'm going to have w/ you all. And i'm gonna be a tuner for GT4 making ultra high response cars and decent horsepower. I've got it all planned out. I still havent thought of a name for my Tuning company.. but i've got untill november to come up w/ one. :)

friendly races like this one from best motoring..

Yes, I know what you mean. But that's the trouble with racing games. In real life it can suddenly all be over after 90 minutes of hard work, but in a game, that is incredibly annoying and would make many people lose interest, i'm sure.

My brother and I come down to the last corner fairly often. I can remember once he bumped me into the last corner of Tokyo. Man, I lost by about a car length, very annoying.

Oh, if you racing the AI and you're in the racing line, excpect to get hit.

But I have no experience with the penalty system so I can't comment on the pros and cons. But it sounds like it'll be more applicable to VS and online play then against the computer.

I was playing GTP the other day with a Toyota Supra around New York. I was going around the second corner. One of the computer cars was on the inside of me, and pushed me onto the wall.

Result: I get the penalty :(

If I had done the same move on a computer car, I would have got a penalty. :boggled: The computer controlled cars can push into you and smash into walls with no penalty on the computer controlled cars whatsoever. :irked:

I can see why it could possibly be applicable for online play, but for solo play it is very infuriating.

If it turns up in GT4, there should be the option to turn it off, otherwise there are going to be very high percentage of angry GT players. And it will ruin a possibly great game.

what the hell...

I guess it would be a great idea but.... I never crashed a AI car first...... They ram me off and I get pissed and then start go ram the car that rammed me.... It happened a lot in Laguna Seca since I still need to get used to the track and slow down some times.......
And when I play my friend, we usually crash because we can't see each other side by side... (If only we could see sideways)....

thats gonna kind of affect our twin drifting. Most other games give the ability to look to the side, and they could use r3 as the look right and L3 as the look left i guess unless they already have something planned for those..

I know, I'm just presenting the POV of all the realism nuts - a small penalty beats not finishing whatsoever. It doesn't even have to be another driver's fault - Michael Schumacher's tyre collapsed at Germany 2003 after he ran wide going around the outside of whoever was in second at the time, dropped him to 7th.

Punch him.

what the hell...

I think he's gonna tune cars and sell them online if that's viable. Just a guess.

Hmmm... I'm not sure it's implemented that well in Prologue... I got shunted off the course at NY and into a wall by the Computer and it resulted in me getting a 10 second pen... and they all pissed off away into the distance...

I think that if they're going to introduce it it needs to apply to computer cars as well... At least then it would be fair!

Also it only seems to be mostly the front of the car that will give you penalties... if you think you're gonna crash and you slip the handbrake and step the back out and into the wall then you crash and lose some time but you avoid getting a 10 second pen!!

I think that unless they impliment something better than the '10 second penalty' like in GT4P - when it comes to racing online we'll se a lot of cheating with people 'brake testing' competitors which would give their opponants a 10 secend penalty, whilst they drive off into the distance.

You sadist, you. It's just a game.

Just a game? Sif. Play to win - never to lose.

You know, I think I actually did after he won that race! :sly:

See? Clever guy.

I didn't know the computer avoided penalties regardless of its on track behaviour - that's something that needs to be rectified.

i agree... this is a must. Hopefully they'll change the system as well so that if another car pushes you into a wall, that car gets the penalty, not you.

That happens almost everytime if you take the outside line at New York on the first bend...

Also I think a warning message should come up saying which car has had a penalty... so that you don't slam into the back of them... (Maybe even the dot on the map should change colour or flash?)

Similar to when a car is entering the pits you get told...

C.

The end justifies the means.

Changing the dot on the course map to black (ala being black flagged) would be a neat touch, can't be too hard.

I personally wouldn't like losing a race based on a bump with another car resulting in a 10 sec penalty.

the 10 second penalty is crap, utter crap. BTW just wanna say, been playing pro some more, citta fricking rules, makes the other 4 tracks seem abit dump :D

I though the same about Citta the first week I played GT4:P (and it still does)

But now I play mostly on Tsukuba (watching too much Best Motoring).

Fuji will be a great circuit once we are subject to a little better competition than we are afforeded at the moment. Tsukuba is good - it reminds me of a typical 'club' circuit like you get in Britain and Europe - ie not all long straights and fast corners. Cittas very different to what we've had before - i just hope we get to race against a full six car grid. I don't care much for New York and Grand Canyon.

I like Citta... but the 10 second pen thing stops me scoring great times... cos I have to take it easy through some of the bends which loses me a lot of time!!

If I could go hell for leather through there then I would get a much better time.

I can see Fuji becoming somesort of Midfield later on when the game is released. People could use it for some sort of "beginners online" track. Just a thought...

You can't beat Midfield for a quick blast, its always the track i run when i'm using lap times to compare different cars. I can see Fuji filling that role in the future, its quick, challanging and doesn't have many 'micky mouse' sections.
