Yesterday's race proved that you don't have to be up front to have some great racing action! My race was basically one big scrap with @IfAndOr, and oh boy, did he put up a fight

The start revealed you don't have to go fast to crash into each other. It's hard to tell from my cockpit, but seemingly @rj5992 decides that his brakes are too cold and brake-checks the rest of the field. @IBZ6L20VT is quick to react and swerves to the left, but @RagingBullLC is not so lucky and makes contact with @rj5992 in front and @richroo to his right.
As we get going, I again get a good exit out of Copse, reminiscent of Monday's race, and put my car to the right of @upuaut mindful that, if I can stay there, I should have the upper hand into Becketts. Approaching the corner, all of the sudden @RagingBullLC is teleported into a parallel universe (seriously, just look at it ) and enters our dimension again right in front of me! I don't have time to scream, let alone brake, but apparently he hasn't fully materialized yet, so I just pass through him. The action continues, as @richroo loses it on the corner entry spinning madly, while @rj5992 cuts in front of @John Wells and is dragged over the circuit like a snowplow. I have to take evasive action, which is ruthlessly exploited by @upuaut to take back the position. On hangar straight the race director waves the green flag and I think to myself: What a couple of first corners! :odd:
The relatively low speed Fords don't allow the field to spread much in the first minutes. On lap 2, I try a late braking maneuver into Copse, but the resulting slide ensures that the gap to @upuaut just gets a bit bigger. @IfAndOr behind me tries to pounce on my mistake and pass me on my right, but loses the drag race up to Becketts. He tries again down Hangar Straight, but again I manage to stay in front. It would not be the last time we play this game :dopey: Going through the Woodcote chicane, I have a small moment, and the chance to close to @upuaut is gone, at least for the moment.
From now on my game plan is "Be fast out of Becketts!" as @IfAndOr and I start our well choreographed dance that would last until the very end of the race. At times, I can't even see the track in my mirrors, so close is his Escort. Let me take you through a lap of ours: @IfAndOr gets a better exit out of Copse and I keep to the left side of the track to make him go the long way round for Maggotts. This way I stay on front for the entry to Becketts, for which I brake early because: "Be fast out of Becketts!" Covering the inside line (well, middle, most of the times) for Stowe, again @IfAndOr has a better exit, but the following straight isn't long enough for him to pass me. I stay on the left approaching Abbey, after which he either tries a switch back and I cover the inside line, or tries to pass me on the inside but never quite gets near enough to try a late braking maneuver without risking both our races. Note that this could be any of the 18 laps, as @IfAndOr never relieves the pressure. He is so close in the end that his car figuratively and literally slams into the back of mine as the AI takes over for the cool down lap. I have to hand it to @IfAndOr, because he stayed patient and waited for a mistake, always driving calculated but forcefully. I'm not sure I could have done so 👍
We both catch up to @upuaut, and I try to pass him around the outside into Woodcote on lap 5. Expectedly, it doesn't work, and I get a sense of what it must be like for @IfAndOr behind me. I do make it past @upuaut after he runs wide at Club corner on the same lap, and @IfAndOr does the same after he loses control putting his car on the grass coming out of Woodcote.
On lap 12, I make my one mistake and it is, of course, coming out of Becketts. With my game plan ruined, I have to watch in anger as @IfAndOr passes me down Hangar straight. Looking in his cockpit, I can almost see the smirk under his helmet while he does so ;) On the next lap, just when I pull out of the slip stream on Hangar straight, race leader @beachboy6658 laps me. I hope he expected my move, because this could have been a hairy one... :nervous: @Don Mejillone is hot on his tail and squeezes @IfAndOr just enough into Club that I can sneak past. I vow to once again stick to my game plan and manage to do so until the end of the race.

I vow to once again stick to my game plan
Game plan? I just make it up as I go along corner by corner. :P

Yes a great race long tussle (I should have done a video from my point of view). I could have perhaps made a lunge here or there but the team manager wouldn't have been happy if I'd taken both of us out. :)

As long as you can stay with someone the Escort does promote good racing but if you drop to far off it's hard to catch up again. Particularly on a track like the original Silverstone. Next week should be a different ball game, the Mustangs might not have such an advantage on the shorter track.

Well done to @beachboy6658, you're on a winning streak. 👍

Short reply, I tend to agree with you. Damage has its place, especially for longer races, but I do prefer visual only for our 30 minutes.

Fuel usage? I don't see why not. Since we now have tyre wear back on a car getting lighter would help with that wear. Are we going to run out of fuel over 30 minutes though? I suppose it might affect the Mustangs more but I'd have thought even those should last the race. That would need testing.

Starting on green? Yes that would be nice since it is an integral part of races. But our modified procedure, while not ideal and can still cause confusion, has generally helped it preventing 1st corner pile ups. Although...

...now I've got my thinking hat on. @Sick Cylinder since we currently have damage disabled we could perhaps try to go on green again sometime. Any early incidents wouldn't require a pit visit or be race ending just cause loss of places - with plenty of time to catch up. When you originally introduced the modified procedure damage was on which was causing some of the problems.

Oh yeah, track limit penalties. :ill:
3 warnings and you get a 10 second penalty then a drive through for further abuse. That's what it needs SMS. None of this "slow down" by an unknown amount for an indeterminate length of time nonsense. It causes problems to following cars.
I agree,go on green while we have damage set to visual only

The key idea behind the series is that they should be accessible to drivers with very limited time (i.e. full-time jobs and family commitments). This dictates that we race using default setups.

It also makes it desirable that both series use the same tracks (whenever possible) so that the Monday race provides track practise for the Wednesday race.

I don't want to add anything to the series which increases the amount of time that participants need to invest.
I agree

I was thinking that with @Sick Cylinder permission and space allowing, I would love to take part on Monday's race. I run out of PS+ membership on Tuesday so it will be the ideal farewell (not a fan of classic Silverstone!)

I'd love to be there, but my routine on mondays doesn't allow for playstation use before 10 or 11pm... You will be missed in the series!

The Mini is an awesome platform to develop on, with great handling and responsiveness. It's a great car to hone your skills on track.

If the wallet allows it, I will get a half cage with harnessess and bucket seats before the 7-day trip to the Nurburgring in Easter 2020.

I'm a sucker for onboard footage, so I'll be looking forward to this!

Watching replay thought was in, front of you, so was my mistake. They have been crashing, so I didn't any overtakes, coming back through field. Everyone in the Escorts, were having a great race.

I remember @rj5992 shooting across the track in front of me just missing my car and thinking "Phew Rob got away with that. He'll just straighten up and carry on."

When I'd passed I opened my eyes and then looked in my mirror and thought "Oh, maybe not!"

I won't make it tonight.
I missed the continued on track battle. Although I did have a bit of a tussle with John but for some reason he kept wanting to go off track and cut the grass. I thought it was a Mustang not a Mower John. :P

To this I'll add the Mustangs will be fine on their track tyres. The Escort use slicks so drivers might be advised to set up a strategy that fits wet tyres if the grip reduces enough to require them. When the rain begins and its amount is slightly random!

John - you might as well set the practice room to dry since the majority of the race will not have rain. Hopefully.

I've had an idea for a potential championship idea. I know Sick likes to keep his races historical and as realistic as possible regarding the competing cars, so I've come up with a fictional yet plausible scenario that I hope you'll enjoy:

It's 2016. Ford is preparing to release its first performance models in the latest generation of Mustangs: the Shelby GT350 & GT350R. However, there's a problem. Early opinions from the press and trusted customers indicate that the modest power increase over the outgoing generation is going to seriously stifle potential sales in an ever competitive Muscle Car market.

The bigwigs get their heads together and come up with a radical solution in a bid to convince the public that, whilst power gains are small, their improved chassis and aerodynamics are enough to wipe the floor with the out-going generation of muscle cars.

They devise a race series.

The trouble is, having two similar looking cars going round a circuit isn't enough of a spectacle to generate the interest they require. So they pull together a fleet of 1966 Mustang RTR TransAms from their own collection and from historical class racing around the world to represent the old school 'power' ideology of muscle cars.

The car they'll go up against? The brand new 2016 Mustang RTR GT4.

Two eras of racing clashing on track. 50 years of progress.

Now, this may seem like an unfair fight but on paper the two cars are remarkably similar:

Both are rear drive V8's with Manual H-pattern gearboxes. As for performance figures;
Power - 1966: 400HP, 2016: 435HP
Weight - 1966: 1,290kg, 2016: 1,545kg
Acceleration - 1966: 5.3s, 2016: 4.59s
Top Speed - 1966: 180mph, 2016: 175mph

During testing at Donnington Park, a Ford test driver was able to lap sub 1:12 in the GT4 and sub 1:13.5 in the TransAm.

Ford assign their own Pro drivers and the historical racers to the 1966 RTR's. To further emphasise the improvement in their modern chassis design, Ford draft together a roster of Amateurs to drive the 2016 GT4's from their list of loyal customers and most successful dealers.

Acting as a support series, Ford plan to take this spectacle to famous tracks in their largest markets for Muscle Cars: America and Australia.

The question is, can the Amateurs take advantage of their more advanced, easier to drive vehicles (equipped with advanced ABS and Traction Control) and compete against the professionals in their lairy analogue beasts? We shall see...

(As an added bonus for us, my testing seems to indicate that the two classes are treated equally in game... so qualifying order will translate to grid order despite the class difference)

Hope you enjoyed my work of fiction, sorry for the length! I got quite into writing that actually!

was having great race with AndreasR, Sick Cylinder, John Wells untill 5 mins to go when i got taken out.

Yeah I was watching your group, quite a scrap going on.

Actually there wasn't too much contact it's just that with Donnington being quite narrow the grass is never far away and it's hard to avoid a spin once you touch it - as I found out quite early! Once you're behind in the Escort you're never going to catch up again.

After a few recent wins I think Beachboy had got the top place on the podium bug and wanted to get back there. I expect he'd got the celebratory Carling Export ready. :P

Hi guys,

again, I won't be able to make it tonight :(:(:(

I'm in the middle of writing up my PhD at the moment, with the firm goal of having the diploma in my hand by Christmas. My work days are getting much longer lately because of that, and I would feel bad regularly quitting on short notice like today and on Monday. I don't want to block a racing seat for anyone else, which is why I won't be joining you on Wednesdays anymore. I want to keep up Monday's races, as it lightens up my week and I'm always having a blast on track with everyone :)

Sorry that I'm doing this in the middle of the season, @Sick Cylinder. If you don't mind, put me on notice for the Wednesday season after the next one. I don't think my situation will be different in three weeks time for the upcoming one...
