Bumper.

Traditionally it was always due to the sensation of speed, these days it's just habit - any other view feels too weird.

It's not actually a cam on the bumper though. I think the camera still resides at the same longitudinal point along the cars length as the cockpit view... it just doesn't display any of the car.

In reality there is a zone in the view that you still have to treat as your car even if you can't see it...

... this varies by car. Get a long bonnet coupe, and a sambabus and see how close you can get to the car infront before there's contact!

99% of the time I'm always in cockpit view. I love that GTS has the glare on the windshield now and depending on the time of day it can get really tricky to see some parts of the track. Just adds to the realism. The other 1% I use bumper cam only in my qualifying laps just to lay down the fastest time possible plus I'm the only one on the track.

Use masking tape ;)

Park the car on the edge of the track using chase cam, then note where the track edge intersects the HUD in bumper cam, similarly nose the car up to a wall, the pit wall for instance, and again, note where the base of the wall crosses the HUD.

It varies a lot from car to car, so what visual cues you use in one car might not be anywhere near in another car.

I need batteries for my two cat lazer pen toys and some blue tack, I can then project two lazer dots on the screen showing my front corners.

Do you cockpit guys not find it a bit restrictive with regards to seeing your surroundings? I tried a few laps with cockpit and felt I could barely see

In some cars it's a little too restrictive but I get used to it eventually, I always raise the seating position in the FOV settings a bit to give me a better view of the track. For me cockpit view feels more immersive, gives me a better sense of speed and is easier to pick out references for braking and turn in. I like bumper for the mirror but that's about it, it feels difficult to follow cars closely with that view since the camera seems to be in the engine bay or something.

Hood view is ok as well but I'm not a fan of chase cam at all, it ruins the immersion which for me is very important for concentrating and staying consistent. I don't need to see all around my car to race clean, the radar is enough.

Yeh I really like the radar map addition to this game, and the visual cues of the screen edges going dark, and those little red radar blobs in the hud are a nice addition too.

It can be restrictive at times and in certain situation but you adapt to it like anything else once you've spent so much time doing it. I think all views have their strong and weak points its just a matter of what your looking to get out of your game play.
Some people want it to be as realistic and immersive as possible while others will use views that have hardly no restrictive line of sight to make them the fastest.

I use bumper cam, primarily for the mirror and fov. I would like to use cockpit view, it is just too restrictive. I can't adjust the fov enough to feel comfortable. It really needs a mirror and have zoom capabilities. I can't stand seeing the wheel either.

I use cockpit exclusively for the sake of immersion. I have tried the bumper and roof/hood cam, and it's easier to be more precise on hitting the apex and of course it has a clearer view of the road ahead.

But I enjoy the cockpit view more, and therefore I use it :)

The "hood" cam is actually sitting on top of the roof of the car. I find I get the best exits out of corners (maybe it's POV?) and when I'm real tight battles I can still see over the car in front of me and it helps to judge braking zones and apexes. The cockpit cam still gives me a good judge of apex and entry as well but the pillars get in the way and in some cars turning left is totally blind.

It's a REAL bummer there's no mirror though. I occasionally cut someone off accidentally, the radar zone only covers very close behind you.

I've never understood how people race in the bumper view that's like 8 inches off the ground it seems like. To each their own. I prefer cockpit but without proper setup or VR it's too restrictive so I use hood view.

Lol I salute you guys that use the bumper cam BIG TIME.
I always felt that the camera sat too low for me especially with corners that have decreasing radius, crests and dips.
However I can see how it helps hit the apex more accurately, and the HUD design and placement is on point

Up until probably a couple years ago when I saw a similar thread like this in the GT6 forums, I would've never guessed I was in the minority.

I've been playing chase cam in just about every racing game as far back as I can remember, starting with GT2 and some of the original NFS series. Now using anything else feels awkward. Occasionally I'll use bumper cam if I feel I am getting some advantage out of it, usually on difficult mission races as I feel I can see what's coming sooner, but I could never translate that into online play.

I commend anyone using cockpit view though. That's dedication right there.

Now I am actually surprised that only 20% use cockpit view. I played GT1 and GT2 excessively on my older brother's PS1 with the controller. However I hated the fact that there was no cockpit view.

After not having a PS2, I returned to GT with GT5, a wheel and the much more immersive cockpit view. I know that GT are no sim games but it still adds to the experience a lot.

In GT Sport I never use anything else than cockpit view except when I have to drive a car that disappointingly has none :-(. Cars like the 908 are extremely difficult to drive that way, but that is just the way a closed LMP1 works. The 919 is ok though, the 30min race from mission challenge is a lot of fun.

In sport mode, I use the radar, which is a necessity for clean driving. This isn't very immersive but replaces missing VR.

What I am still missing in GT Sport is an option for automatic look-to-apex in cockpit view and the option "cockpit view only" for custom lobbies.

Bumper cam if I am playing socially, I use chase cam (which I find a lot harder :boggled:) for filming my youtube videos as it is better for the viewer.

I always use cock pit due the feeling of immersion and realism. Personally I don't find the view restrictive at all. The only other view I used to use was bumper cam before cock pit view became widely available in most titles.

Mostly in sims i play in cockpit view with the right VoF settings and camera position.

Also like to take away the virtual wheel and driver. Or use the dash cam in Assetto, so i its like my real wheel fitted in the place.

In GT Sport... There is no real Vof settings and the camera settings are very limited.
The virtual wheel rotation in some cars isn't ok either.
So in GT i sometimes switch to the bumper cam.

Always chase cam, and it has been my choice since I started playing video games. For me I have the best sense for the car and for the speed, I can see how the car is behaving and respond to that much quicker. I've heard that some people say chase cam is like control an RC car, which I can agree to, and maybe that is the other reason why I use chase cam, my childhood and RC cars. :)

If I could race GTS with triple screens, or with VR, I would use cockpit cam.
Cockpit cam on single screen is not at all realistic, nor is it immersive.

"Bumper Cam" in GTS is actually "Driver's Eye View", with a transparent car, and that is what I use.
It is by far the most realistic, to what my brain sees when I am on track in real life.

Cockpit ...it can be a bit restrictive with some cars/tracks (porsches not good in sharp corners you can't see the turn in or exit because of hands and wheel) but you adapt. If you are smooth it shouldn't be a problem you should have each track mapped mentally by now ;)

The reality of what F1 drivers see is the most surprising one.

And just in case anyone can't bother to watch 4 minutes to see the end, this is the camera placement.

And one from a Formula 3.5 V8 driver.

What I love most about both of these is the number of people in the comments of both telling the actual drivers they are wrong about what they see!

In my opinion this is a more accurate view:

Mine's a bumper cam in this game. Which is weird because in every other game like it I use a different view. In Forza 7, I stick to onboards. With PCars2, I use the roof cam. And, on the rare occasion I find myself playing Assetto Corsa, I use chase cam for that. I tend towards chase cams for stuff like Dirt, MXGP and RaceRoom. With GTR 2 and RACE 07 I can toss and turn between cockpit and chase. I stick with TV cameras for F1 2017, switch between TV and cockpit (and occasionally chase) for F1C 99-02 and use cockpit for RFactor 2.

And yet GT Sport is the only one where I'm inclined towards the bumper cam. It's probably more to do with the other views being bad, to be honest. But it's not alone in that. I've chosen Forza and PCars' respective views for much the same reason. Everything else, by and large, is just the default, really. Except F1C, which does it best in all-round terms.
