Why haven't you gotten a wheel yet?

I was going to buy a wheel right up to the point I discovered the six-axis method of control with the DS4. Now I really don't see the need. I own Project Cars 2 but I haven't played it since discovering the six-axis functionality.

I have the G29 and a frame but 60% of the time I play on controller. the better half has her thoughts on a playseat in front of the telly .

I use the left stick to steer but the grand kids use the 6-axis. I've tried it but whilst I find it ok I find the lack of weight makes it feel less natural than the LS.

I put that down to my being an old git but if your making it work maybe I should take a 2nd look.

Take a 2nd look mate. It took me 2 days to get used to the lack of resistance but I can now lap quicker and, more importantly, more consistently than I ever could with the left stick or even a wheel (I've owned wheels in the past).

Took at least a five year break from racing games, went through some pretty hardcore things during that time. Slowly getting back on my feet though. G29 is next my shopping list once Xmas is out of the way.

Unless the better half has been paying attention to my subtle hints . .

It‘s just the standard PS4 controller. It has an inbuilt gyroscope/accelerometer which allows control by tilting and rotating controller instead of using the sticks or D-Pad. Not all games support it however, and not all humans support it either as I‘m a total mess trying to use it.

That sounds absolutely horrible though, I can’t understand why that would be better than a wheel.

Having played Mario Kart on the Wii steering wheel controllers, I imagine it’s sligjtly similar.

A wheel all the way for me.

I doubt it is better than a wheel but it's better (for me) than the analogue stick and doesn't take up space.

It's not as horrible as it sounds B.C.

There's a couple of big issues with it, the lack of weight/feedback is one and the other is That after a while it becomes quite straining on your arms unless you've set up some form of elbow rests when using it.

I'd say steering its more accurate, progressive and consistent than using the left stick.

My biggest issue with it when I can't get on my wheel is I feel using 6-axis is detrimental to my throttle and brake control on the controller (R2 and L2 for me).

Zorro reckons you can overcome that if you persist with it, I hadn't done that properly yet but I will at least give it a proper try.

If your wheel is readily available it will always be the best option for me, but even with a wheel and a rig I don't always get to use that option and its controller play or nothing.

Just as an aside - does anyone imagine that if the car were to be invented only today that it would have a wheel & pedals as it's interface? I highly doubt it. We've become so accustomed to a wheel that it's almost like a fifth limb & it's difficult to shake the feeling that anyting else is somehow inferior.

I was lucky enough to drive the new Audi A8 last week for about 20km and you know what it felt like? Nothing. It's an impressive beast for covering distances but at normal speeds there's no noise, no bumps, no brake feel & no steering feel. That's not driving, that's being driven. And don't start me on its touchscreens. Argh! That's a whole other thread.

I use square for up and X for down. It's the shortest route. It does work. The thing is, it might not be faster than the left stick but it's soooo much smoother once you get the hang of it. I find that much more rewarding.

I got a wheel as a xmas present last year, haven't looked back!

Couldn't imagine playing a racing game with a controller now.... sixaxis may be good but for immersion and 'feel', you can't beat it.

But to say you can't understand how anyone who drives in real life can be happy with a controller, nor understand why they don't buy a wheel at the expense of other games, is, to me, a strange way of looking at it.

Having shown a perfectly good wheel setup can be got for less than the price of two major games, and can be used for a large variety of driving games (some with far more realistic handling than GTS) I find it strange why anyone that drives IRL would spend the money on a driving game and NOT buy a wheel. As I said, I guess it depends on whether you consider racing games as 'games' or sims...

Still probably more likely to have something that turns 900 degrees rather than a thumb stick that moves less than 2cm to control the lock to lock steering of a 2 ton vehicle capable of 155 mph. Agree on pedals tho.

FWIW I use a wheel but if I didn't I would use 6 axis. My thumb just doesn't have the dexterity or accuracy. I blame growing up on sega Saturn where steering was just left or right with a slow rate of turn

The T80 doesn't have force feedback, so it's basically a glorified toy. The cheapest wheel you should consider is the Thrustmaster T150

I wouldn’t blame anybody for not getting a wheel for this game. If I didn’t have a G29, I wouldn’t be playing, as is I only play couple times a week(I do FIA Manufacturer).

Having said that, sometimes GT Sport delivers. When you find the groove, are in the zone and feel like you can do no wrong it’s a special feeling.

I wasn’t even going to play until I could pick a new manufacturer because I was having a dreadful time with the Ferrari but I thought what the hell, the girlfriend is out so I got time. Tried a few practice lobbies and it wasn’t inspiring confidence. But I stuck with it and before I knew it, I was feeling it suddenly.

Didn’t get it together during qualifying but I remained optimistic for the race. Starting 4th but was leading by lap 4 and never looked back. I’m saving that replay!

As the above poster says, T150 is the entry-level wheel. You need force feedback. You might as well use the 6 axis technique on your controller, rather than spending more money on wheel that has no FFB like a T80. It's not worth it.

I've had my T150 since 2015 and it has served me well on GT Sport, F1 2017, F1 2018 and Project Cars 2.

However, after three years it's almost dead. T300 RS GT is the next level up and that's hopefully going to be my next purchase in the coming days.

I have a G29, but that's at my house and now my new partner lives 30 miles away, I'm back to playing with a controller so as not to leave the wheel in plain sight of her 5 year old that would likely see it manhandled to destruction!

You must understand, I play many other games and sometimes don't play GT for days, weeks even.

Now, if I were purely a racing game player, and that was all that interested me, and I took it more seriously than just a casual bit of fun for an hour here and there, then yes, I may well have bought a wheel.

But I am not that invested.

Plus, I play my games in my bedroom, sitting on the bed, as the t.v is dominated by family members, and it wouldn't really be very comfortable.

If I had a nicely made seat, and had the space, it might be different.

So, like I said, I'm happy with what I've got and I don't feel at a disadvantage, nor would I complain if I were .

Got kids to spend money on lol, I wish I could get one though cause I struggle rolling the steering off and could do with pedals to have better control on brakes and throttle. Pads ok but still fun but make stupid mistakes sometimes.

I wouldn’t expect support for it in a GT game. Took them long enough to support the existing Fanatec and they also want to make sure that their officially licensed wheel(Thrustmaster TGT) is the best way to play GT. It’s frustrating
