Today’s the day you can open the first door on your Advent calendar, and you’ll find an interesting selection of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races inside.
It’s a week for treats too, with the Gran Turismo 7 Spec III update coming — likely on Thursday December 4 — and we’re half-expecting a physics change with the pre-update notes including the addition of Dunlop tires, so this set of events could well have a switch-up in the pecking order mid-week. That might be the reason why two of the three have a pre-set car list.
The first of those comes in the return of the popular “meme” race at Special Stage Route X, giving you a choice of 16 high-performance machines tuned up to 825hp or more for a one-lap, 255mph game of chess. Well, maybe more like kabaddi.
It’s a shockingly uncomplicated race, as you’ll basically need to go flat-out from start to finish in your choice of vehicle. Speaking of which, you can select the Bugatti Chiron, Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, Dodge Viper GTS, Ferrari F8 Tributo, Honda NSX Type R ’02, Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4, Mazda RX-7 Spirit R and its RE Amemiya-tuned sibling, Mercedes-AMG GT Black, R32-R34 generations of Nissan Skyline GT-R, Nissan R35 GT-R Nismo, Nissan Z ’23, Pagani Huayra, and Toyota Supra ’97.
In previous editions, the Mercedes has been the qualifying king, but curiously the top 100 are all using the Huayra. We’d consider not using the Huayra in the race, as it’s pretty easy to unsettle (and there will be contact) and its nitrous system is not as effective as others. Oh yes, you have nitrous in the race, so don’t forget to map a button for it if you haven’t (it’s R1 by default).
Do note that both Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are switched off for this race this week, so you can treat it as a bit of fun — but don’t go ruining anyone else’s in the process.
There’s a pretty routine race in the Race B slot this week, comprising a four-lap run around Autodrome Lago Maggiore’s Full Course (known as the GP circuit in GT Sport) in the Gr.3 cars.
All you really need to know here is that whatever car you choose will need to be on Racing Medium tires, and that while the class is usually well-balanced it’s a bit of a BMW M6-fest out there this week.
Race C also has a set of pre-tuned, pre-liveried cars for you to pick from for a ten-lap race at Suzuka, as it brings back a classic JGTC-style event for the week.
There’s actually 16 cars again here, but only nine individual vehicles because some have multiple liveries available to give it more of an old-school feel. That’s the Ferrari F40, Honda NSX GT500 (three liveries), Lamborghini Diablo GT (two liveries), McLaren F1 GTR in ’95 and ’97 forms, Nissan R32 GT-R NISMO (two liveries) and R34 GT500 (two liveries), Porsche 993 911 Carrera RS, and Toyota Supra GT500 (three liveries).
While those cars that are already Gr.3 machines look like the most tempting choice, the Diablos are pretty popular options on the qualifying leaderboard at least. It’s also worth considering that there’s a mandatory pit stop, which requires you to head down the pit lane at least once during the race though you don’t need to take on fuel or new tires in the process. Indeed with standard tire wear and Racing Hard tires, it’s entirely unnecessary — unless rain hits, which is a possibility.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 8.
